Sof\u00eda Ayarzagoitia<\/strong> is a Mexican photographer who for several years has been interested in migration and border crossing. She portrays the relationships she establishes with many people. Sometimes her works are about herself, sometimes not, but they are always personal.<\/p>\n

She has worked with migrants who have left their own country. As in the case of the Senegalese in Spain. She has a romantic relationship with of one of them while she was doing her master’s degree in Madrid. She recorded daily her experience sharing times and spaces with them and she made the book Everynight temo ser la dinner published<\/em> by La F\u00e1brica in 2016.<\/p>\n

But she is also interested in crossing other types of borders: those that now, for example, who travel around the city to work have to cross; those crossed by those suffering from certain mental illnesses; or those that go through those who decide to experiment with their body.<\/p>\n

Beyond the geographical nature of the border, Sof\u00eda seeks to reflect on that concep in order to understand it from a human perspective that does not reduce it to a number. She proposes “to make visible this human process that nobody wants to see, that is embodied in the people I portray.” And that’s why she takes pictures from privacy.<\/p>\n

Her photography also crosses borders and plays with mental states. She migrates to do them, experiments with herself and reflects on limits. She wonders what borders should we cross? Which ones should be eliminated? Which ones should we create? And she proposes “it is necessary to design and build bridges, to appropriate the linguistic territories in which we can shout identities to generate new forms of coexistence and restructure those lines that strengthen us.”<\/p>\n

She also writes poems, and she always has something to read, she says that she better expresses her ideas this way. These texts are sometimes part of her photographic works. The italicized texts that accompany this interview are part of a poem that she read during the conversation, she thought it might be a better way to understand her images.<\/p>\n

The way you portray migrants shows other sides of migration, those are not typical images.<\/strong><\/p>\n

First of all, they are very young people. The character who appears with a black sheet had to abandon his family. I am interested in talking about migration from perspectives that include, for example, migrating in the same country or in the same city. Right now there are people who come to work every day and are exposed. For me there are many types of migration.<\/p>\n

How do you understand migration?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I’ve been working on this issue for many years and I’ve not been able to close it in a book. I want to do it soon, but I feel like things keep coming out.<\/p>\n

I feel migration with these people who embody all those things, such as violence, mental illness or drugs, and who have to survive. I wrote something about it: \u201cWithin the cities an army of people travels they have abandoned their homes, their family. One day they are forced to make the decision to leave. Sometimes they have no name. Nobody sees them because they are an affront to their own life and their motives. Their only story is the one they are talking about right now. They don’t have a job. They are the spoils of a system that has failed them, reinventing the imaginary limits that destroy, separate, protect and torture. They live transiting human borders, always trying to maintain balance under psychological stress, dignity and their tenuous physical and moral integrity that they cross daily with the hope of returning. My intention is to make visible this human process that nobody wants to see, that is embodied in the people I portray. “<\/p>\n

I was traveling through Latin America. In Colombia I photographed Venezuelans and actually crossed the border into Venezuela as a Venezuelan. I took very few photos because I was so impressed. Then I also took pictures of the San Juan River in Mexico, there I found a bone. It is a place where human remains are commonly found. I also took photos in Dallas and it was one of the moments when I exposed myself the most. I don’t do that anymore.<\/p>\n

In my photos I want to show all the themes related to migration: the violence to which they are exposed; the mental illness that is part of the lives of many of them, or their relationship with drugs. Throughout this process I have received the help of my teacher Eduardo Ram\u00edrez. He helped me to specify some of the texts. He suggested that I consult the Diccionario latinoamericano de estudios culturales<\/em>, which has been very important in the conceptual foundation of my work.<\/p>\n

Sof\u00eda Ayarzagoitia es una fot\u00f3grafa mexicana que desde hace varios a\u00f1os se ha interesado por la migraci\u00f3n y el cruce de fronteras. Retrata las relaciones que establece con muchas personas. A veces los trabajos son sobre ella misma, a veces no, pero siempre son muy personales.<\/p>\n

Ha trabajado con migrantes que han salido de su pa\u00eds de origen para irse a otro. Como en el caso de los senegaleses en Espa\u00f1a. Sof\u00eda fue pareja de uno de ellos mientras hac\u00eda su maestr\u00eda en Madrid. Registraba a diario su experiencia compartiendo tiempos y espacios con ellos y de ah\u00ed surgi\u00f3 el libro Everynight temo ser la dinner<\/em> publicado por La F\u00e1brica en el 2016.<\/p>\n

Son los despojos de un sistema que les ha fallado, reinventando los l\u00edmites imaginarios que destruyen, separan, protegen y torturan. Viven transitando las fronteras humanas, siempre tratando de mantener el equilibrio bajo el estr\u00e9s psicol\u00f3gico, la dignidad y su tenue integridad f\u00edsica y moral que a diario cruzan con la esperanza de regresar. Estuve viajando por Am\u00e9rica Latina. En Colombia fotografi\u00e9 venezolanos y de hecho cruc\u00e9 la frontera a Venezuela como venezolana. Tom\u00e9 muy pocas fotos porque me impresion\u00f3 mucho. Luego tambi\u00e9n hice fotos en el r\u00edo San Juan en M\u00e9xico, ah\u00ed encontr\u00e9 un hueso. Es un lugar donde se encuentran restos humanos com\u00fanmente. Tambi\u00e9n hice fotos en Dallas y fue uno de los momentos en que m\u00e1s me expuse. Ya no hago eso.<\/p>\n

En mis fotos quiero mostrar todas las tem\u00e1ticas relacionadas con la migraci\u00f3n: la violencia a la que se exponen; la enfermedad mental que hace parte de la vida de muchos de ellos, o su relaci\u00f3n con las drogas. En todo este proceso he recibido la ayuda de mi maestro Eduardo Ram\u00edrez. \u00c9l me ayud\u00f3 a concretar algunos de los textos, me sugiri\u00f3 consultar el Diccionario Latinoamericano de Estudios Culturales<\/em>, que ha sido muy importante en la fundamentaci\u00f3n conceptual de mi trabajo.<\/p>\n

Siempre funciona diferente. Pero por ejemplo, traigo una idea, una semi\u00f3tica que vi que quiero utilizar, no que est\u00e1 en casa de esta persona. Y \u00e9l se pone a performar frente a mi c\u00e1mara con estos objetos que yo quiero utilizar para las fotos. Y \u00e9l est\u00e1 actuando, decidiendo c\u00f3mo se quiere ver o c\u00f3mo quiere retratarse. A veces yo llevo cosas, por ejemplo, en la foto del chupacabras. Ah\u00ed llev\u00e9 las patas de vaca, inclusive la sudadera, trat\u00e9 de prepararlo bastante. Al final seleccion\u00e9 esta foto que estaba menos perfecta, en movimiento.
