In 1968 Eunice Adorno\u2019s<\/strong> father was part of the student movement that mobilized to the Plaza Mexicana de las Tres culturas. That day the police beat and arrested thousands, and killed hundreds of students. Even now, it is not clear enough how many. This is known as the “Tlatelolco massacre”. She grew up with that story about her father. Maybe that\u2019s why, thinks Eunice, years later and already as a consecrated photographer, she started to work in a project about a student’s house.<\/p>\n

The result was a book, Casa estudiantil Octubre Rojo<\/em>, a publication made by the sweat of a brow and product of six years of work in a student shelter in Mazatl\u00e1n Sinaloa. What experiences must humble students go through to get to go to university? What is it like to organize their day-to-day when resources are scarce and violence appears all the time around them?<\/p>\n

Eunice studied photography at the Image Center, participated in the World Press Photo Joop Swart Masterclass in Amsterdam and has more than a decade of experience in photojournalism. She was awarded the FONCA scholarship to young creators for several consecutive years and the Fernando Ben\u00edtez National Culture Award in 2010. Among other things, she was also nominated for the Rudin Prize for Emerging Photographers (2012) and won the IMCINE economic incentive for writing a script in 2014.<\/p>\n

How did you get to the production of the book Casa Estudiantil \u2018Octubre Rojo<\/em>‘?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I was doing an investigation about the violence in Mexico when the \u201cwar on drugs\u201d started. It was when this house came up and I stayed a long time. The book compiles all the documentary recordings that I made with young students from Mazatl\u00e1n, Sinaloa, in northern Mexico. It is an area known for the drug trafficking loop, which has done so much damage to young people and education.<\/p>\n

I worked from 2012 t0 2016 (then they threw up to make a park) in a very precarious House, with only male students. It was called Octubre Rojo. Is a reflection about how to survive in a community, what are the students in Mexico 50 years after Tlatelolco. Also, to talk about education, about the young death that exists through crime. Also about the death of the countryside. In the countryside, there is not work anymore.<\/p>\n

This house had a very bad reputation, it was poverty. Poverty annoys. It was downtown, they always wanted it not to be visible. They were young children of farmers, fishermen, who survive as they can to study at the university.<\/p>\n

How did you get to this story?<\/strong><\/p>\n

My dad was part of the student movement, he was a very young student who was disenchanted with how it is a repression of a great movement. That feeling was always in my house, those anecdotes of the dirty war, fear, the feeling that the students were coming. I always had a very intimate question. I feel that it influenced a lot in the way of being and the way of seeing the world of my father.<\/p>\n

Doing this social project on this site was, for me, very special. A student house is a place, a refuge, it is a kind of family home where students sleep. In our history, ’68 was a great blow to Mexican students. My father was also in the Plaza de Tlatelolco where many students died.<\/p>\n

After that great movement, a liberal trend came, wanting a new man. When being repressed by the army, its importance also begins to be in other states of the Republic of Mexico that makes the students, in some way, also stimulate themselves, continue with a fight so that the university is democratized.<\/p>\n

The idea was created that if you were a low-income student, you couldn’t go to university, because you had to rent a place to sleep if you came from a ranch. Then the student houses, united with the workers, were demanded by the government. It was about taking those abandoned spaces or abandoned hotels. Beyond sleeping, a self-managing organization is made: what are we going to eat? How are we going to organize ourselves to sleep? It is a symbolically very important thing in our country.<\/p>\n

What ideas have you learned from this project?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The construction of patriarchy, violence, orphanhood. They leave their ranches because there is nothing. After all, life in the countryside is very difficult, there are super radical climates. I think I will always remember this resistance. To resist is also do it in the face of poverty, in the face of many difficult factors, and even so they continued studying. That will always be there. Being able to go to very desolate, lonely places in Sinaloa. Feeling somehow safe with them, we made great empathy and great friendships there.<\/p>\n

There is a whole community working there. Many of them went to the project presentation, now I am handing out books, trying to understand a publication when a project ends and is having a life of its own.<\/p>\n

In Desandar<\/em> you have also worked with the history. Specifically with files, fragments, documents to reconstruct the stories of women of the Mexican Liberal Party. How did it come about?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Somehow I was interested in finding the archive of pre-revolutionary women and how these women, their speeches, their professions, are trapped in institutional archives where there is no classification of them. All the archives are always directed to men, it is very interesting how this history of struggle in the revolution is trapped in this institutional thing and remains totally in the documents. That is another search that I have with them. It led me to reflect on other forms of representation, how to look for other languages, installation, video, the plastic arts.<\/p>\n

Obtuvo la beca que otorga el FONCA a j\u00f3venes creadores durante varios a\u00f1os consecutivos y el Premio Nacional de Cultura Fernando Ben\u00edtez en 2010. Fue cuando surgi\u00f3 esta casa y me qued\u00e9 mucho tiempo. El libro recopila todo el registro documental que hice con j\u00f3venes estudiantes de Mazatl\u00e1n, Sinaloa, al norte del pa\u00eds. Se trata de una zona conocida por el lazo del narcotr\u00e1fico, que tanto da\u00f1o ha hecho a los j\u00f3venes y a la educaci\u00f3n.\n\nTrabaj\u00e9 desde 2012 a 2016 (luego la tiraron para hacer un parque) en una Casa muy precaria, con estudiantes puros hombres. Se llamaba Octubre Rojo. Es una reflexi\u00f3n sobre c\u00f3mo sobrevivir en comunidad, qu\u00e9 son los estudiantes en M\u00e9xico 50 a\u00f1os despu\u00e9s de Tlatelolco. Tambi\u00e9n, para hablar de la educaci\u00f3n, de la muerte joven que existe a trav\u00e9s del crimen. Tambi\u00e9n, de la muerte del campo. En el campo ya no se trabaja.\n\nEsta casa ten\u00eda muy mala fama, era la pobreza. La pobreza molesta. Estaba en el centro de la ciudad, siempre quieren que no se visibilice. Ese sentimiento siempre estuvo en mi casa, esas an\u00e9cdotas de la guerra sucia, el miedo, la sensaci\u00f3n de que ven\u00edan los estudiantes. Siempre tuve una cuesti\u00f3n muy \u00edntima. Siento que influy\u00f3 mucho en la forma de ser y la manera de ver el mundo de mi padre.\n\nHacer este proyecto social en este sitio fue, para m\u00ed, muy especial. Una casa de estudiante es un lugar, un refugio, es una especie de casa hogar en donde duermen los estudiantes. En nuestra historia, el \u201868 fue un gran golpe a los estudiantes mexicanos. Mi pap\u00e1 estuvo, tambi\u00e9n, en la plaza de Tlatelolco en la que murieron much\u00edsimos estudiantes.\n\nDespu\u00e9s de ese gran movimiento lleg\u00f3 una corriente liberal, de querer un hombre nuevo. Al ser reprimido por el ej\u00e9rcito, su trascendencia tambi\u00e9n empieza a estar en otros estados de la rep\u00fablica de M\u00e9xico que hace que los estudiantes, de alguna manera, tambi\u00e9n se estimulen, contin\u00faen con una lucha para que se democratice la universidad.\n\nSe fue creando esa idea de que si t\u00fa eras un estudiante de bajos recursos no pod\u00edas acceder a la universidad, porque ten\u00edas que rentar un lugar para dormir, si ven\u00edas de un rancho. Entonces las casas de estudiantes, unidos con los trabajadores, fueron exigencias al gobierno. Se trat\u00f3 de tomar esos espacios abandonados u hoteles abandonados. M\u00e1s all\u00e1 de dormir se hace una organizaci\u00f3n autogestiva: \u00bfqu\u00e9 vamos a comer?, \u00bfc\u00f3mo nos vamos a organizar para dormir? Se van de sus ranchos porque no hay nada, porque es muy dif\u00edcil la vida del campo, son climas super radicales. Creo que siempre voy a recordar esta resistencia. Resistir tambi\u00e9n es resistir ante la pobreza, ante muchos factores dif\u00edciles y a\u00fan as\u00ed continuaban estudiando. Eso siempre va a estar ah\u00ed. El poder ir a lugares muy desolados, solitarios, en Sinaloa. Sentirme de alguna manera segura con ellos, hicimos gran empat\u00eda y grandes amistades ah\u00ed.\n\nHay todo un trabajo comunitario ah\u00ed. Espec\u00edficamente con archivos, fragmentos, documentos para reconstruir las historias de mujeres del Partido Liberal Mexicano. \u00bfC\u00f3mo surgi\u00f3?<\/strong>\n\nDe alguna manera me interes\u00f3 encontrar el archivo de las mujeres pre-revolucionarias y c\u00f3mo estas mujeres, sus discursos, sus profesiones, quedan atrapadas en archivos institucionales donde no hay clasificaci\u00f3n de ellas. Todos los fondos de los archivos siempre est\u00e1n dirigidas a los hombres, es bien interesante c\u00f3mo esta historia de lucha en la revoluci\u00f3n queda atrapada en esta cosa ah\u00ed de lo institucional y se queda totalmente en los documentos. Esa es otra b\u00fasqueda que tengo con ellas.
