Julia Sbriller<\/strong> is an architect, photographer, and performer. She also works as a teacher, editor, cultural manager, and coordinator of Creadores de im\u00e1genes<\/a>, an educational network of Latin American photography. She defines herself as a curious person, desiring and in quest: she wonders how to amalgamate all of her “hybrid” training while she experiments with the individual and collective body.<\/p>\n

So, in 2018, she put on a track with music for the bodies to meet. The result was the performance Tiempos dif\u00edciles<\/em> requieren danzas ruidosas<\/em>, with Catalina Bartolom\u00e9. In 2019, she and Joaqu\u00edn Wall made Mandala<\/em>, a photographic essay on \u201cmore complex, multiple, quantum\u201d gender identities that move away from binarism. Then they brought themselves into play in the nude self-portraits they called Flechas al sol<\/em>. In the same year, they created Torontoides<\/em> a performance that reflects on the body as something that \u201ccontains us\u201d but also on \u201cthe planet, its magnetic fields, and its mysteries”.<\/p>\n

You say your training is hybrid, what do you mean?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I grew up in Patagonia, in a small town called Cipolletti. When I finished high school, I moved to La Plata and I was very thirsty. I was a young teenager with a great thirst for things, so I began to study everything simultaneously. While studying architecture, I studied photography and dance. It was quite chaotic; I was interested in everything.<\/p>\n

I felt so desirous and curious that it was quite a topic to think that I wanted to open so many branches. For all this, for a long time, my job was to think about how to unify all this information. I think I’m still in that labor. How can I think of an architecture of the body concerning the image?<\/p>\n

Although there was something in my academic training, it was not complete for me on a metaphorical or poetic level. That “harder” structure that architecture has, didn’t close. Then the dance would appear, to soften everything. The image was always a great companion, a great love. The photo was always a certainty in my life. It accompanies me as a tool to orbit other things that interest me.<\/p>\n

And how do you get to the bodies as a subject?<\/strong><\/p>\n

My work is in relation not only to the individual body but also to the collective. From architecture, I think of the body as an available space to connect us, to modify the places where we are, the way we find ourselves or think.<\/p>\n

I think my work has a lot to do with bonding, and the body is a way of bonding. In my work, I not only take photos but also generate experiences or have a training space. Everything leads me to think of the body as a temple, and I believe that these temples can meet.<\/p>\n

You were talking about the idea of the collective body. What does it mean for you?<\/strong><\/p>\n

What are we? In some way, each body is totally influenced and infected, drenched in other bodies. I believe a lot in how we are transforming ourselves in relation to our ties, to our context. From there, we are generating collective ideas of which sometimes we are more or less aware.<\/p>\n

Perhaps it is a fantasy to think that it is like an organization that falls on us, crosses us, and accompanies us. It does not mean \u2018utopia\u2019, because it seems like a lot to me, but I think it has to do a bit with that: being aware of how we all transform ourselves, it is a way of understanding how ideas or networks are generated in small communities.<\/p>\n

Do you put your own body at stake?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Not always, but lately, I have been working a lot with Joaqu\u00edn Wall, and we find it interesting to put our bodies at the disposal of what we are thinking. I think we feel that to understand and clarify what we are doing, we need to put our bodies to go through those states or those tests and through that exposure.
We have been working a lot with the people we find who are available and what happened there is also interesting because as we show our work to more people it makes them want to participate. I am interested in making myself available to the image to be more empathetic with what is happening.<\/p>\n

For example: now I am in Bariloche and I want to take some pictures in the snow with nudes. The first thing I’m going to do is take some photos of me, to see the limit of what I’m asking for. For me, it is important to understand what it feels like, what the shapes are. I’m interested in those mobile roles and going through the experience.<\/p>\n

I think that passing it through the body is a way of reflecting on how to tell stories. In my personal experience, beyond the work, passing it through my own body gives me back another sphere of what I am doing<\/p>\n

Is that what \u2018Creadores\u2019 is about?<\/strong><\/p>\n

It is a Latin American educational network that has different locations. It started in La Plata and now has many locations in Argentina and also in Colombia, Uruguay, Mexico, and Spain. It is a space for training and experimentation with photography. I coordinate the online headquarters and the network in general. It is very interesting on an educational and thinking level of the image. Creadores is a collective body in which we don’t even need to get to know each other. We work in a community or in a group with a conscience.<\/p>\n

When I arrived in Bariloche we filmed S\u00edlex<\/em> and I want to continue with that investigation. Now I’m thinking a bit about the seasons. We filmed that in autumn and here the seasons are very marked. Everything that happens to us at the level of linking with our own body and with others has a lot to do with the time of year. Mi obra est\u00e1 en relaci\u00f3n no solo al cuerpo individual, sino tambi\u00e9n al colectivo. Desde la arquitectura pienso el cuerpo como un espacio disponible para vincularnos, para modificar los lugares donde estamos, la manera que tenemos de encontrarnos o de pensar .<\/span><\/p>\n

Creo que mi trabajo tiene mucho que ver con lo vincular y que el cuerpo es una manera de vincularnos. En mi trabajo no solo hago fotos, sino que tambi\u00e9n genero experiencias o tengo un espacio de formaci\u00f3n. Todo me lleva a pensar al cuerpo como un templo de cada uno y creo que esos templos pueden encontrarse. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00bfQu\u00e9 es lo que somos? De alguna manera, cada cuerpo est\u00e1 completamente influenciado y contagiado, empapado de otros cuerpos. Creo mucho en c\u00f3mo nos vamos transformando en relaci\u00f3n a nuestro v\u00ednculos, a nuestro contexto. Desde ah\u00ed vamos generando ideas colectivas de las que a veces tenemos m\u00e1s o menos conciencia.<\/p>\n

Quiz\u00e1s es una fantas\u00eda pensar que es como una organizaci\u00f3n que nos cae, nos atraviesa y nos acompa\u00f1a. No quiere decir \u2018utop\u00eda\u2019, porque me parece un mont\u00f3n, pero pienso que tiene que ver un poco con eso: con tener conciencia de c\u00f3mo nos transformamos entre todes, es una manera de entender c\u00f3mo en peque\u00f1as comunidades se van generando ideas o redes.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n\u00bfPones tu propio cuerpo en juego?<\/b>\n

No siempre pero s\u00ed, \u00faltimamente estoy trabajando mucho con Joaqu\u00edn Wall y nos parece interesante poner nuestro cuerpo a disposici\u00f3n de lo que estamos pensando. Creo que sentimos que para terminar de entender y clarificar lo que estamos haciendo hace falta poner nuestro cuerpo en funci\u00f3n de eso: pasar por esos estados o por esas pruebas y por esa exposici\u00f3n. <\/span><\/p>\n

Venimos trabajando mucho con las personas que encontramos que est\u00e1n disponibles y tambi\u00e9n es interesante lo que pas\u00f3 ah\u00ed, porque a medida que vamos mostrando nuestro trabajo a m\u00e1s gente le dan ganas de participar. Me interesa ponerme a disposici\u00f3n de la imagen para estar m\u00e1s emp\u00e1tica con lo que est\u00e1 pasando. <\/span><\/p>\n

Por ejemplo: ahora estoy en Bariloche y quiero hacer unas im\u00e1genes en la nieve con desnudos. Lo primero que voy a hacer es tomarme unas fotos a m\u00ed, para ver cu\u00e1l es el l\u00edmite de lo que estoy pidiendo. Para m\u00ed es importante entender qu\u00e9 se siente, cu\u00e1les son las formas. Me interesan esos roles m\u00f3viles y pasar por la experiencia. <\/span><\/p>\n

Creo que pasarlo por el cuerpo es una forma de reflexionar sobre c\u00f3mo contar historias. Es una red educativa latinoamericana que tiene distintas sedes. Empez\u00f3 en La Plata y ahora tiene muchas sedes en Argentina y tambi\u00e9n en Colombia, Uruguay,  M\u00e9xico, y Espa\u00f1a. Es un espacio de formaci\u00f3n y de experimentaci\u00f3n con fotograf\u00eda. Yo coordino la sede online y la red en general. Es muy interesante a nivel educativo y de pensamiento de la imagen. Creadores es un cuerpo colectivo en el que que ni siquiera hace falta que nos conozcamos entre todes. Trabajamos sobre una colectividad o sobre una grupalidad con conciencia. <\/span><\/p>\n

Nuestro trabajo tiene mucho que ver con lo que experimentamos y la manera de entender nuestro entorno, entonces como estamos en dos entornos muy distintos pasa algo re interesante.
