During a 12-hour trip navigating the Caquet\u00e1 River, Laura Sof\u00eda Mej\u00eda<\/strong> and V\u00edctor Galeano<\/strong> began to imagine what today is Baud\u00f3 Agencia P\u00fablica<\/a>. In 2016, they were doing the transmedia documentary Una parte por mill\u00f3n<\/a>, an investigation about mercury contamination in several rivers in Colombia. In the middle of that process, they began to wonder how they could continue to do in-depth journalism, achieve respectful relationships without publicity to survive. That is, to do what they were passionate about following their ethical and political principles.<\/p>\n

They knew from their previous experiences as photojournalists and journalists that in traditional media they would not be able to do it. They learned about other experiences and recognized their own knowledge and experiences in cultural management.<\/p>\n

Baud\u00f3 is a space dedicated to managing and developing journalistic coverage projects with a focus on human rights. They have three thematic axes: environment, gender, and inclusion; and memory, peace, and conflict. They have designed a training space with the objective is to qualify visual, journalistic, and sound productions in Colombia.<\/p>\n

They work with a non-profit model that has allowed them to maintain independence in their content. Furthermore, according to them in Baudo \u201cthere are no sources, there is no audience, there are no workers. There are friends, there is a community, there are networks that are created from mutual learning and coexistence\u201d.

In recent times, Baudo made a respectful coverage of the national strike in the region known as Eje Cafetero in Colombia. Also, in their four years of existence, they have developed different types of work in which they combine different media: Todas las hojas son del viento<\/a>, documenting an initiative to restore an area of tropical dry forest or Los 12 de Punta del Este<\/a>, doing a memory exercise in search for justice of families who lost their relatives in a massacre in Buenaventura. But they have also worked on a series of graphic reports, chronicles, and news.<\/p>\n

The idea of independence and autonomy is interesting, especially considering there is a boom in independent media in several countries.<\/strong><\/p>\n

V\u00edctor Galeano:<\/strong> In Colombia, there are a lot of media like this for the last 10 and 20 years. When we got into this we didn’t know they existed. We did have a reference in Latin America and our models were: Ojo p\u00fablico in Peru; Agenda P\u00fablica in Brazil…<\/p>\n

Laura Sof\u00eda Mej\u00eda:<\/strong> N\u00f3mada in Guatemala, El Faro in El Salvador. They were our referents, although they do very different things. We decided from the beginning that we did not want to make the breaking news format, although saying that at this moment is super curious because we did a coverage on the national strike that we had never thought of doing.<\/p>\n

We thought about long-term projects. We thought about how to involve research processes and multimedia transmedia creation around in-depth journalistic investigations. How to turn those issues that are so hard, so complex to tackle into communicative pieces that are closer to the people.<\/p>\n

Baudo does not ask about the immediate news. The way we measure our impact has to do with the way we formulate our objectives that go far beyond the publication of content. Ours is focused on community work, on communication processes for development that we carry out in parallel with journalistic coverage.<\/p>\n

So, it was necessary to stop thinking that the media should be financed through advertising. We understood that if we want to do this type of journalism, then we have to put on the resource management shirt so that it does not interfere with the rest.<\/p>\n

Victor:<\/strong> We have also been identifying training needs that we were trying to solve in some way. Parallel to thinking about a solution to journalism that we wanted to do, we were also thinking about contributing to the training that was needed in the country. And there we were joining those two lines.<\/p>\n

Baud\u00f3 does not define itself as a regional media but is outside the center, in this case outside Bogot\u00e1, it does imply a difference with other media.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Laura:<\/strong> Of course, especially in what questions we ask ourselves and why. Not so much because of the geographical location, but because there are other types of needs and other questions that make a difference. We can have a look at the country, but from the region, yes.<\/p>\n

V\u00edctor:<\/strong> There is also one thing that we thought about from the beginning. It turns out that to train yourself had to go to Bogot\u00e1, sometimes to Medell\u00edn or Cali. In photography, we would pack the suitcase, get the transportation and go to take the workshop. All information and knowledge were centralized. So we ask ourselves, why don’t we bring those workshops here and instead of both of us leaving we look for other people to participate? The answer is that nobody participated, there with more reason we said that it was necessary to start opening the spaces to achieve decentralization of everything. I mean, it was all thanks to a big tantrum.<\/p>\n

It is something more geopolitical, in a sense of positioning itself, but also assuming some difficulties.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Laura: Yes, it was how to give a regional look to the national, rather than looking at ourselves, it is how we in the regions see the rest of the country. In the League against silence, of 19 media, only three of us are outside of Bogot\u00e1. It is too big a difference, hence Chagra, a network of community storytellers, was born, thinking about how we can narrate ourselves, how to decentralize the gaze, and allow other perspectives to be heard. We believe that there is a more conscious and broader look. In addition, one of the promises of the value of the contents is the fact of being in the places.<\/p>\n

Victor:<\/strong> therein lies the need for time to get things done. We are clear that we move from the cities to the places we do not live there, but we know the difference between making a note only with calls, or online, to invest a year of work on a project. We also give you time to develop friendships with the people in your territories. We are interested in building content with the participation of people. The exercise of listening and presence has changed many theories. And over time we have managed to understand what it is that people in places want and need.<\/p>\n

Laura:<\/strong> one of our ways of measuring impacts is that the people of the communities feel identified with what we did. That is why we always return, we bring the results, we dialogue with the people who participated. That is what gives validity to our work.<\/p>\n

Durante un viaje de 12 horas navegando el r\u00edo Caquet\u00e1 Laura Sof\u00eda Mej\u00eda y V\u00edctor Galeano empezaron a imaginar lo que hoy es <\/span>Baud\u00f3 Agencia P\u00fablica<\/span><\/a>. En el 2016, estaban realizando la investigaci\u00f3n del documental transmedia <\/span>Una parte por mill\u00f3n<\/span><\/a> sobre la contaminaci\u00f3n con mercurio en varios r\u00edos de Colombia. En medio de ese proceso, empezaron a preguntarse c\u00f3mo podr\u00edan continuar haciendo trabajos de periodismo a profundidad, que les permitieran lograr relaciones respetuosas y que no necesitaran de la pauta publicitaria para vivir. Es decir, hacer lo que les apasionaba siguiendo sus principios \u00e9ticos y pol\u00edticos.<\/span><\/p>\n

Un a\u00f1o despu\u00e9s,  fundaron juntos Baud\u00f3 AP y a medida que fueron consiguiendo financiaci\u00f3n, lograron vincular a otros periodistas. Baud\u00f3 un espacio que se dedica a gestionar y desarrollar proyectos de cobertura period\u00edstica con un enfoque en derechos humanos. Tienen tres ejes tem\u00e1ticos: medio ambiente, g\u00e9nero e inclusi\u00f3n; y memoria, paz y conflicto.  Han dise\u00f1ado un espacio de formaci\u00f3n cuyo objetivo es cualificar producciones visuales, period\u00edsticas y sonoras en Colombia.<\/span><\/p>\n

Funcionan con un modelo sin fines de lucro que les ha permitido mantener la independencia en sus contenidos. Adem\u00e1s, seg\u00fan ellos en Baud\u00f3 \u201cno hay fuentes, no hay audiencia, no hay trabajadores. En los \u00faltimos tiempos, Baud\u00f3 hizo una cobertura respetuosa del paro nacional en la regi\u00f3n conocida como Eje Cafetero en Colombia. Pero adem\u00e1s, en los cuatro a\u00f1os que tienen de historia han desarrollado diferentes tipos de trabajos en los que conjugan diferentes medios: <\/span>Todas las hojas son del viento<\/span><\/a>, documentando una iniciativa de restauraci\u00f3n de una zona de bosque seco tropical o  <\/span>Los 12 de Punta del Este<\/span><\/a>, haciendo un ejercicio de memoria en busca de justicia para familias que perdieron a sus familiares en una masacre en Buenaventura. Es interesante la idea de la independencia y la autonom\u00eda, sobre todo pensando en que hay un boom de medios independientes en varios pa\u00edses.<\/b><\/p>\n

V\u00edctor Galeano: <\/b>En Colombia hay una cantidad de medios as\u00ed y que llevan entre 10 y 20 a\u00f1os. Cuando nos montamos en esto no sab\u00edamos que exist\u00edan. S\u00ed ten\u00edamos referencia en Latinoam\u00e9rica y fueron nuestros modelos como:  Ojo p\u00fablico en Per\u00fa; Agenda P\u00fablica en Brasil...<\/span><\/p>\n

Laura Sof\u00eda Mej\u00eda: <\/b>N\u00f3mada en Guatemala, El Faro en El Salvador. Eran nuestros referentes, aunque l\u00f3gicamente ellos hacen cosas muy distintas. Nosotros decidimos desde un inicio que no quer\u00edamos hacer un formato noticioso, aunque decir eso en este momento es s\u00faper curioso, porque el del paro ha sido un cubrimiento que jam\u00e1s hab\u00edamos pensado hacer. <\/span><\/p>\n

Nosotros pens\u00e1bamos en proyectos de largo aliento, pens\u00e1bamos en c\u00f3mo involucrar  procesos de investigaci\u00f3n y de creaci\u00f3n transmediales multimediales alrededor de investigaciones period\u00edsticas a profundidad. C\u00f3mo convertir esos temas que son tan duros, tan complejos de abordar en piezas comunicativas m\u00e1s cercanas a la gente.<\/span><\/p>\n

Baud\u00f3 no se pregunta por las noticias inmediatas. La forma como medimos nuestro impacto tiene que ver con la manera en que formulamos nuestros objetivos que van mucho m\u00e1s all\u00e1 de la publicaci\u00f3n de contenidos. Lo nuestro est\u00e1 enfocado en el trabajo comunitario, en los procesos de comunicaci\u00f3n para el desarrollo que realizamos en  paralelo a las coberturas period\u00edsticas. <\/span><\/p>\n

Entonces era necesario dejar de pensar que el medio de comunicaci\u00f3n debe financiarse a trav\u00e9s de la publicidad. Entendimos que si queremos hacer este tipo de periodismo, pues tenemos que ponernos la camiseta de la gesti\u00f3n de recursos para que eso no interfiera en el resto.<\/span><\/p>\n

V\u00edctor: <\/b>adem\u00e1s ven\u00edamos identificando necesidades de formaci\u00f3n que intent\u00e1bamos de alguna manera solucionar. Paralelo a pensar en una soluci\u00f3n al periodismo que quer\u00edamos hacer, tambi\u00e9n est\u00e1bamos pensando aportar a la formaci\u00f3n que hac\u00eda falta en el pa\u00eds. Baud\u00f3 no se define a s\u00ed mismo como un medio regional, pero s\u00ed implica una diferencia con otros medios el hecho de localizarse fuera del centro, en este caso fuera de Bogot\u00e1.<\/b><\/p>\n

Laura: <\/b>claro, sobre todo en qu\u00e9 preguntas nos hacemos y por qu\u00e9. No tanto por la ubicaci\u00f3n geogr\u00e1fica, sino porque hay otro tipo de necesidades y otras preguntas que definitivamente hacen la diferencia. Podemos tener una mirada de pa\u00eds, pero desde la regi\u00f3n s\u00ed. <\/span><\/p>\n

V\u00edctor: <\/b>Adem\u00e1s hay una cosa que nosotros pensamos desde el comienzo. Resulta que para poder formarse hab\u00eda que ir a Bogot\u00e1, a veces a Medell\u00edn o a Cali. En fotograf\u00eda, nosotros arm\u00e1bamos la maleta, consegu\u00edamos lo del transporte y nos \u00edbamos a tomar el taller. Toda la informaci\u00f3n y el conocimiento estaba centralizado. Entonces nos preguntamos, \u00bfpor qu\u00e9 no mejor nos traemos esos talleres para ac\u00e1 y en vez de irnos los dos buscamos que otra gente pueda participar? La respuesta es que nadie participaba, ah\u00ed con m\u00e1s raz\u00f3n dijimos que era necesario empezar a abrir los espacios para lograr descentralizar todo. V\u00edctor: <\/b>Ah\u00ed radica la necesidad del tiempo para hacer las cosas. Nosotros tenemos claro que nos trasladamos desde las ciudades hacia los lugares, nosotros no vivimos ah\u00ed, pero sabemos de la diferencia entre hacer una nota solo con llamadas, o por internet, a invertirle un a\u00f1o de trabajo a un proyecto.
