Luis Antonio Rojas<\/strong> is a civil engineer and photojournalist. He studied at the International Center of Photography in New York City, and since he returned to Mexico, he has worked in collaboration with the media. He says he practices “the western school of being the fly on the wall to make images that speak of this everyday life”.<\/p>\n

How did you get into The Last Peasants story?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I carried the camera with me when I walked around the university where I was studying civil engineering. I was trying to understand the area, marked by a contrasting social inequity on the shores of Mexico City. Almost by accident, I ran into the Carmona family, living in a rural microcosm in the middle of a concrete giant. They are the last peasants of Santa Fe, an urban development planned by the government in the 80s to represent the progress and modernity of the city through luxury residential subdivisions and skyscraper business addresses.<\/p>\n

Gerardo is the youngest son and the one who stayed to farm his father’s land. A 25-meter bridge, like the ones my father has built all his life and I was learning to build in college, surrounded his asbestos house. On one side, some cows and a small cornfield. On the other, a luxurious condominium with its own golf courses. Every time I had a couple of free hours I would sneak out to spend time with them. I stayed over when it got late.<\/p>\n

They took me in like a lost grandson and I will thank them forever for that. I was going to college but I was thinking about them and photography all the time. How did you achieve that feeling of loneliness in<\/span><\/strong> <\/b>Ricardo Mendoza’s<\/b><\/a> photography<\/strong>?<\/b><\/p>\n

It is the type of images that the industry consumes daily and that I constantly question. Hard moments and the more intimacy, the better. We were from ten to fifteen journalists attending the funeral of half a dozen victims of an armed group in the mountains of Guerrero. The youngest, the one in the white satin casket in the picture, was only 15 years old. In cases like this, I can’t wear long glasses or push a button without having talked to family members first. I try to do this with the utmost self-criticism and empathy. I asked the mother of the murdered child for permission. When I saw the coffin enter through the church door, I stood a few meters away, waiting for Ricardo to pass under the light that came through a window and painted the copal smoke, obscuring the rest of his relatives and journalists who were on the scene.<\/p>\n

How did the idea of \u200b\u200b\u201cNotas de voz desde Tijuana\u201d come about?<\/strong><\/p>\n

One night in October 2018 in Mexico City, inside the temporary camp for the migrant caravan at the Palacio de Los Deportes, I met Hugo Mart\u00ednez. He had met him a week earlier during a report on the first steps towards the United States border, in Tapachula. Hugo had left Tegucigalpa (Honduras) with his 20-year-old son, without notifying anyone. So that I could contact his dad, I lent him my phone. No one answered. He recorded a voice memo on WhatsApp to apologize for leaving without saying goodbye. Upon receiving the cell phone back, both of us were crestfallen for a while.<\/p>\n

Hugo was part of the 8,000 displaced people who left their country to create the largest caravan that has dared to travel this route. His stories tend to be reduced to categories: the adolescent fleeing gangs; the mother looking for better opportunities; or the youth that pursues a dream; but they are much more than that. Most seek to escape unimaginable contexts and the magnitude of this movement was colossal, its scale generated hope.<\/p>\n

When the caravan arrived in Tijuana, I lent my cell phone to other members of the group so that they could contact family and friends. With their consent, I recorded the calls and voice memos. Using a medium format analog camera allowed me to encourage the process when it came to portraits. Intentaba comprender la zona, marcada por una contrastante inequidad social en las orillas de la Ciudad de M\u00e9xico. Casi por accidente, me top\u00e9 con la familia Carmona, viviendo en un microcosmos rural en medio de un gigante de concreto. Son los \u00faltimos campesinos de Santa Fe, un desarrollo urbano planeado por el gobierno en los 80s para representar el progreso y la modernidad de la ciudad mediante fraccionamientos residenciales de lujo y direcciones de empresas en rascacielos.\n\nGerardo es el hijo m\u00e1s peque\u00f1o y el que se qued\u00f3 a cultivar la tierra de su padre. Un puente de 25 metros, como los que mi padre ha construido toda su vida y yo estaba aprendiendo a hacer en la universidad, rodeaba su casa de asbesto. De un lado, algunas vacas y un peque\u00f1o campo de ma\u00edz. Del otro, un condominio lujoso con sus propios campos de golf. Cada vez que ten\u00eda un par de horas libres me escapaba para pasar tiempo con ellos. Me quedaba a dormir cuando se me hac\u00eda muy tarde.\n\nMe acogieron como un nieto perdido y les agradecer\u00e9 eternamente por eso. Iba a la universidad pero pensaba en ellos y en fotograf\u00eda todo el tiempo. Momentos duros y entre m\u00e1s intimidad, mejor. \u00c9ramos de diez a quince periodistas presenciando el funeral de media docena de v\u00edctimas de un grupo armado en la monta\u00f1a de Guerrero. El m\u00e1s joven, el que va en el ata\u00fad de satin blanco en la imagen, ten\u00eda solo 15 a\u00f1os. En casos as\u00ed no puedo usar lentes largos ni apretar un bot\u00f3n sin haber hablado con lxs familiares antes. Trato de hacer esta labor con la mayor autocr\u00edtica y empat\u00eda. Le ped\u00ed permiso a la madre del ni\u00f1o asesinado. Cuando vi entrar el ata\u00fad por la puerta de la iglesia me mantuve a unos metros esperando a que Ricardo pasar\u00e1 debajo de la luz que atravesaba una ventana y pintaba el humo de copal, oscureciendo el resto de sus familiares y periodistas que estaban en la escena. <\/span>\n\n<\/span>\n\n\u00bfC\u00f3mo surgi\u00f3 la idea de \u201cNotas de voz desde Tijuana\u201d?<\/strong>\n\nUna noche de octubre de 2018 en la Ciudad de M\u00e9xico, dentro del campamento temporal para la caravana migrante en el Palacio de los Deportes, me encontr\u00e9 con Hugo Mart\u00ednez. Lo hab\u00eda conocido una semana antes durante un reportaje de los primeros pasos hacia la frontera de Estados Unidos, en Tapachula. Hugo hab\u00eda salido de Tegucigalpa (Honduras) con su hijo de 20 a\u00f1os, sin avisarle a nadie. Para que pudiera contactar a su pap\u00e1, le prest\u00e9 mi tel\u00e9fono. Nadie contest\u00f3. Grab\u00f3 una nota de voz en WhatsApp para disculparse por haber partido sin despedirse. Al recibir el celular de vuelta, ambos nos quedamos cabizbajos durante un rato.\n\nHugo form\u00f3 parte de las ocho mil personas desplazadas que dejaron su pa\u00eds para crear la caravana m\u00e1s grande que se ha atrevido a recorrer esta ruta. Sus historias tienden a reducirse a categor\u00edas: el adolescente que huye de las pandillas; la madre en busca de mejores oportunidades; o la juventud que persigue un sue\u00f1o; pero son mucho m\u00e1s que eso. La mayor\u00eda busca escapar de contextos inimaginables y la magnitud de este movimiento fue colosal, su escala gener\u00f3 esperanza.\n\nCuando la caravana lleg\u00f3 a Tijuana, prest\u00e9 mi celular a otros de sus integrantes para que contactaran a familiares y amigos. Con su consentimiento, grab\u00e9 las llamadas y las notas de voz. Usar una c\u00e1mara an\u00e1loga de formato medio me permiti\u00f3 alentar el proceso a la hora de los retratos.
