\u201cFrom the 1960s to the 1980s, a diverse group of enthusiastic Se\u00f1oritas, named after the Ik\u0289 (Arhuaco) and Kogi indigenous peoples, entered the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and gave their lives to the social revolution: a revolution without weapons, but armed to the teeth of love, curiosity, and dreams. “<\/p>\n

Juan Sebasti\u00e1n Zapata<\/strong> learned about the history of Las Se\u00f1oritas, women belonging to the Secular Union of Missionaries (USEMI) in the middle of an anthropological investigation. The work that they carried out, although little known, was important: following the teachings of one of the founders of USEMI, Monsignor Gerardo Valencia Cano, and firm in the principles of the social doctrine of the church, they had a fundamental role in the organizational development of the Arhuaca community but also of the conservation of their customs, education, and health.<\/p>\n

Juan Sebasti\u00e1n Zapata,<\/strong> sociologist and anthropologist, Daniela Rocha<\/strong>, clinical and legal psychologist, Santiago Dussan<\/strong>, artist, and Daniel Vel\u00e1squez<\/strong>, filmmaker, came together to investigate and tell the story of Las Se\u00f1oritas en la Sierra.<\/em> At this moment they are in the post-production stage of a documentary feature film that aims to tell a good part of the story and make these women and their work visible. How did you come to this story?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Juan Sebasti\u00e1n:<\/strong> I came to the Sierra in 2015 as a sociology intern with the Kankuamo indigenous organization and I was quickly delighted. The Kankuamo live on the southeastern slope of the Sierra and above them live some indigenous ik\u016b (Arhuacos). For the master’s in anthropology, I decided to do a thesis on how this society is organized today. Investigating the social transformations, the influence of the Capuchin missionaries is evident, who made a thousand and one mistakes thinking that what they were doing was the best for the indigenous people.<\/p>\n

So I learned that there was a very different mission: the Secular Union of Missionaries (USEMI) and I saw an interesting vein to investigate because it is also quite unknown. So we got together in an interdisciplinary team made up of Daniela Rocha, Santiago Dussan, Daniel Vel\u00e1squez, and myself.<\/p>\n

So what was this about the Secular Missionaries?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Daniela<\/strong>: USEMI was made up of missionaries who were educated by Monsignor Gerardo Valencia Cano, a bishop who worked in Buenaventura and was one of the founders of the Union. He relied on the social doctrine of the Church to work with the people. Thus, instead of seeking to \u201cbring the word of God\u201d to the territories, what he did was to recognize in poverty a series of Christian values \u200b\u200bthat lead to self-giving. From that thought, he created a group that had missions around Latin America. A group of women arrived in the Sierra, invited by the Capuchins, who did not know who they were welcoming.<\/p>\n

At the time there was an important peculiarity and that is that they were single women, but they were not nuns. It was a rare situation and that is why the communities began to call them Las Se\u00f1oritas, the name we chose for the documentary. They lasted 20 years in the Sierra working with the indigenous people.<\/p>\n

What kind of women were Las Se\u00f1oritas? Who could be secular, single, and go on a mission to places like the Sierra?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Juan Sebasti\u00e1n:<\/strong> USEMI was made up of two very particular types of women: those from wealthy families with a Catholic ethic of service and women of popular origin who had an affinity with that missionary vision of dedication to the poor. Monsignor Valencia, they say, had clarity and what he did at the beginning was to target women from Catholic families who could economically afford to go to the jungle.<\/p>\n

Juan Sebasti\u00e1n:<\/strong> the first young lady who arrived in the Sierra did so as an Indigenous Affairs official and not as a lay missionary. She then started bringing USEMI. From this dual role, she was the interlocutor with the State. USEMI’s work with Incora for the delimitation of the Arhuaco Indigenous Reservation was fundamental. They were the bridge of communication.<\/p>\n

You have told in your networks that you have a lot of information collected among that a large photographic archive. How have you thought about making the documentary?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Daniela:<\/strong> This documentary mixes the audiovisual, the anthropological, and the psychological. We collected 1200 photos from the USEMI archive, we have documents, letters, primers, books, as well as 45 cassettes with recordings of both important meetings with the government and with very important people, even nights of songs and guitar. We want to transport viewers back to that time while we narrate the reunion of the current ik\u016b community with USEMI, because despite its importance there is a lot of silence around.<\/p>\n

Finally, we want to show how this process of compiling the archive has been for us, interviewing Las Se\u00f1oritas who still live, and indigenous people in the area. We want those three lines to come together in a big braid, allowing the viewer to be an active participant in the story.<\/p>\n

una revoluci\u00f3n sin armas, pero armada hasta los dientes de amor, curiosidad y sue\u00f1os.\u201d\n\nJuan Sebasti\u00e1n Zapata conoci\u00f3 la historia de Las Se\u00f1oritas, mujeres pertenecientes a la Uni\u00f3n Seglar de Misioneras (USEMI) en medio de una investigaci\u00f3n antropol\u00f3gica. Los kankuamo viven en la vertiente suroriental de la Sierra y encima de ellos viven algunos ind\u00edgenas ik\u016b (arhuacos). Para la maestr\u00eda en antropolog\u00eda, decid\u00ed hacer una tesis sobre c\u00f3mo se organiza esta sociedad actualmente. Indagando por las transformaciones sociales es evidente la influencia de los misioneros capuchinos, quienes cometieron mil y un errores pensando que lo que estaban haciendo era lo mejor para los ind\u00edgenas.\n\nAs\u00ed me enter\u00e9 de que hubo una misi\u00f3n muy diferente: la Uni\u00f3n Seglar de Misioneras (USEMI) y vi una veta interesante para investigar, porque adem\u00e1s es bastante desconocida. As\u00ed, en lugar de buscar \u201cllevar la palabra de Dios\u201d a los territorios, lo que hac\u00eda era reconocer en la pobreza una serie de valores cristianos que llevan a la entrega. A partir de ese pensamiento comenz\u00f3 a conformar un grupo y a tener misiones en diferentes partes de Latinoam\u00e9rica. A la Sierra lleg\u00f3 un grupo de mujeres invitadas por los Capuchinos, que no sab\u00edan a qui\u00e9nes estaban llevando.\n\nPara la \u00e9poca hab\u00eda una particularidad importante y es que ellas eran mujeres solteras, pero no eran monjas. Era una situaci\u00f3n rara y por eso en las comunidades las empiezan a llamar Las Se\u00f1oritas, el nombre que elegimos para el documental. Monse\u00f1or Valencia, seg\u00fan cuentan, tuvo una claridad y lo que hizo al comienzo fue apuntar a mujeres de familias cat\u00f3licas que econ\u00f3micamente pudieran permitirse ir a la selva.<\/span>\n\nDaniela: <\/b>hemos encontrado que una parte de ellas proven\u00eda de familias paisas importantes de la \u00e9poca. Luego empez\u00f3 a traer a USEMI. Desde ese doble rol, ella fue la interlocutora con el Estado. La labor de USEMI con el Incora para la constituci\u00f3n de la Reserva Arhuaca fue fundamental. Ellas eran el puente de comunicaci\u00f3n.<\/span>\n\nUstedes han contado en sus redes que tienen mucha informaci\u00f3n recolectada entre eso un gran archivo fotogr\u00e1fico. \u00bfC\u00f3mo han pensado hacer el documental?<\/b>\n\nDaniela:<\/b> este documental mezcla lo audiovisual, lo antropol\u00f3gico y lo psicol\u00f3gico. Recopilamos 1200 fotos del archivo de USEMI, tenemos documentos, cartas, cartillas, libros, adem\u00e1s de 45 casetes con grabaciones tanto de reuniones importantes con el gobierno y con personas muy importantes hasta noches de cantos y guitarra. Queremos transportar a los espectadores a esa \u00e9poca mientras narramos el reencuentro de la comunidad ik\u016b actual con USEMI, porque a pesar de su importancia hay mucho silencio alrededor. <\/span>\n\nFinalmente queremos mostrar c\u00f3mo ha sido para nosotros este proceso de recopilar el archivo, entrevistar a Las Se\u00f1oritas que a\u00fan viven y a ind\u00edgenas de la zona. En esa \u00e9poca y por las distancias, se comunicaban con cartas, nosotros tenemos la producci\u00f3n intelectual de 20 a\u00f1os de un grupo grande de personas. Era como su whatsapp, se contaban cosas como que \u201cel jean que le compr\u00e9 a fulana le qued\u00f3 grande\u201d, o \u201c el obispo de Valledupar nos est\u00e1 diciendo que lo que hacemos es actividad guerrillera\u201d.<\/span>\n\nDaniela: <\/b>s\u00ed, en este momento estamos depurando la informaci\u00f3n y hemos descubierto unos puntos de tensi\u00f3n, como: ser mujer y trabajar en la realidad Colombiana de los 60, teniendo en cuenta tambi\u00e9n la cultura ind\u00edgena; todo el asunto de la persecuci\u00f3n pol\u00edtica y la forma en que tuvieron que salir.
