Six years ago, the musician David Pinz\u00f3n Cadena<\/strong> made a “political decision” not to make music for money again. After a long career as a composer for television shows, teacher, and music producer, he decided to become utterly consistent with his idea of \u200b\u200bart.<\/p>\n

He has been self-taught to play various instruments from the age of 14. As he left his home, he taught music to others to support himself. Soon, other musicians invited him to listen, asked his opinion, and then directed the recordings. Thus he became a music producer without knowing it or fully understanding it.<\/p>\n

With this experience, at 23, he created a music production career and soon began composing for television. He says that there he discovered the two passions of his life: “making sound canvases and teaching.” He still loves these two passions, but he takes them on in a completely different way than he did then. He is composing his Requiem for him and has a growing number of works in development. He has also collaborated with other artists: he made the soundtrack for Dulce y salada<\/a>, Jorge Panchoaga’s project, and the music for a video for Juno June’s Las dos hebras<\/a> project, among others.<\/p>\n

How do you understand art? To what extent can it be detached from the circuits and the industry?<\/strong><\/p>\n

For me, all human beings are responsible for assuming our lives and obtaining the means to survive: you can do that by selling empanadas. That is a political position, and I do not seek to convince anyone. Art does not necessarily have to do with trade or profit. It is an intimate and private conversation between the artist and God (or the universe, great spirit, whatever you want). Art is a vehicle. It is something you ride on to explore the universe.<\/p>\n

There came a time when I wondered what I was doing with that vehicle and realized that I felt like a taxi driver. It is an internal fight, sometimes not so secret to many artists. I finally resolved by cutting clean: it was an understanding of my vital time.<\/p>\n

But then, how do you make others know about your creation?<\/strong><\/p>\n

When I made music for television, I tried very hard to meet my client’s expectations. That’s part of professionalism. Still, I tried to put an aesthetic seal and send an encrypted message. My commercial work has a hidden message, and I am very proud. It was gratifying that it was recognized and that people connected with it. When I produced artists, I tried to be the most consistent with that. Since 2015 I have continued producing and creating work for third parties without financial interest.<\/p>\n

I’ve been in music for 25 years, and I feel I’ve just started. The best things will still take time, and I am not in a hurry. I make music every day, but I feel it’s not ready yet. It’s like when you have a lovely dream with mountains, rivers, and birds that no one has seen, and when you wake up, you set out to draw it, but you can’t do it. So it takes 20 years for you to learn to draw, and finally, that dream does justice one day.<\/p>\n

It is fascinating to put that in terms of image.<\/strong><\/p>\n

It is like this: neither music, literature, nor even pedagogy has a differentiated aspect in the plane where they are born. It differs here on this plane by our senses and how our mind works. You say poetry, painting, music, but in their source, they are formless. None of them iare distinguished in that way.<\/p>\n

Where they come from, they are units, and you can convert them into whatever you want. In my personal experience and in what I have been able to investigate, one comes into contact with that, and it is a private job to decide how you want to translate it. Some of the texts that I write for my pedagogical work also come from there.<\/p>\n

The decision to develop it visually or musically is of this plane, but it makes no difference, and a commitment to art is a commitment to all art.<\/p>\n

You put poetry and music on the same level as pedagogy. Why?<\/strong><\/p>\n

For me, pedagogy is one of the highest acts of service that I can do. When I speak of service, I mean the expression of who we are. With pedagogy, something very nice happens: you give something precious to someone: information. Information can change, design, or destroy life. And to be able to teach, you have to be consistent. There we return to politics again.<\/p>\n

How do you understand politics?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I understand politics in the sense of having principles or approaches from which you address the world. I am a political being since my life is consistent with those principles. It is not about being inflexible.<\/p>\n

How was the dialogue about the music you made for Jorge Panchoaga’s work? In other words, is it possible that there is communication between these two worlds (Jorge’s and yours), where for you, the pieces come from?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yes, it’s the same thing that happens when you marry someone when you make love with someone. Whatever should happen. From the context of this interview, I recognize that it may seem that what I am saying is very hermit. But no. I will clarify that no one is disconnecting; on the contrary, it is connecting, opening up with the whole world.<\/p>\n

Jorge is in an impressive process as an artist, he is living through his stages and does some compelling works, but he did not know what he was doing. He has always said it. When he started Dulce y Salada<\/em>, he began to collect material and live experiences; his creative way was to generate an explosion of experiences and then try to understand them.<\/p>\n

So he came to me with ten years of recordings. I don’t know how many hours. I joined in that chaotic boom and what we did was he handed me a bank of sounds, and we designed a workflow. That is almost as valuable as the work itself. He wanted to express what he felt about being in a population about the immensity of water, life, death, nature, the cycles in the stars, human misery, poverty, pain, suffering\u2014everything he had seen and experienced during his work.<\/p>\n

So I chose the sounds, created the resonators, used tape recorders, ran the sounds through a series of filters, and created some echoes. I designed four resonators, and we passed the sounds around. They are unique takes. I performed live and then edited them a little bit.<\/p>\n

And how was working with Juno for Las dos hebras<\/em>?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I felt her work as an inner search for what we are: if we are the ones who inherit or where we appear. She had her DNA sequenced and sent me the results. I chose a series of notes and randomly assigned them to that sequence. We made some layers, and then when you listen to the music, you hear a note making a sequence. Then another layer appears, which is the other sequence. When all 12 layers sound simultaneous when repeating, they form impressive sound mandalas, beautiful.<\/p>\n

\u201cdecisi\u00f3n pol\u00edtica\u201d de no volver a hacer m\u00fasica por dinero. Despu\u00e9s de una larga carrera como compositor para programas de televisi\u00f3n, profesor y productor musical, decidi\u00f3 volverse completamente coherente con su idea de arte.\n\nAprendi\u00f3 de manera autodidacta a tocar varios instrumentos desde los 14 a\u00f1os. Al salir de su casa ense\u00f1\u00f3 m\u00fasica a otros para sostenerse. Al poco tiempo otros m\u00fasicos lo invitaban a escuchar, le ped\u00edan su opini\u00f3n y luego \u00e9l terminaba dirigiendo las grabaciones. As\u00ed se convirti\u00f3 en productor musical, sin saberlo ni terminar de comprenderlo del todo.\n\nCon esta experiencia, a los 23 a\u00f1os cre\u00f3 una carrera de producci\u00f3n musical en un instituto y al poco tiempo empez\u00f3 a componer para televisi\u00f3n. Dice que ah\u00ed descubri\u00f3 las dos pasiones de su vida: \u201chacer lienzos sonoros y ense\u00f1ar\u201d. A\u00fan ama estas dos pasiones, pero las asume de manera completamente diferente a aquel entonces. Est\u00e1 componiendo su propio Requiem y tiene una serie de obras en desarrollo que van creciendo. Esta es una pelea interna a veces no tan secreta de muchos artistas, la m\u00eda finalmente se resolvi\u00f3 cortando por lo sano: era una cuesti\u00f3n de entender mi tiempo vital.<\/strong>\n\nPero entonces, \u00bfc\u00f3mo haces que otros conozcan tu creaci\u00f3n?<\/strong>\n\nCuando hac\u00eda m\u00fasica para televisi\u00f3n me esforzaba much\u00edsimo en cumplir las expectativas de mi cliente, eso hace parte del profesionalismo. A\u00fan as\u00ed  procuraba poner un sello est\u00e9tico y mandar un mensaje encriptado. Mi obra comercial tiene un mensaje oculto del que me enorgullezco mucho,  fue muy gratificante que lo reconocieran y que la gente se conectara con ello. Cuando produc\u00eda artistas trataba de ser lo m\u00e1s consistente con eso. Despu\u00e9s del 2015 he seguido produciendo y creando obra para terceros, pero sin inter\u00e9s econ\u00f3mico. \n\nLlevo 25 a\u00f1os dedicado a la m\u00fasica y siento como si acabara de empezar. Las mejores cosas a\u00fan se van a tardar y no tengo af\u00e1n. Hago m\u00fasica todos los d\u00edas, pero siento que a\u00fan no est\u00e1 lista. Es como cuando uno tiene un sue\u00f1o muy lindo, con monta\u00f1as, r\u00edos y p\u00e1jaros que nadie ha visto, y al despertar uno se propone dibujarlo\u2026 pero no sabe dibujar. Entonces se toma 20 a\u00f1os aprendiendo a dibujar para por fin un d\u00eda hacerle justicia a ese sue\u00f1o. \n\n \n\nEs muy interesante poner eso en t\u00e9rminos de imagen.<\/strong>\n\nPara m\u00ed es as\u00ed: ni la m\u00fasica, ni la literatura, ni siquiera la pedagog\u00eda tienen forma en la que se puedan diferenciar unas de otras en el plano en donde son originadas. Se diferencian aqu\u00ed en este plano en virtud de nuestros sentidos y de c\u00f3mo funciona nuestra mente. T\u00fa dices poes\u00eda, pintura, m\u00fasica, pero en su fuente originaria son informes, ninguna de ellas se distingue de esa manera.\n\nEn el lugar de donde vienen son unidades y t\u00fa las puedes convertir en lo que quieras. En mi experiencia personal y en lo que he podido investigar uno entra en contacto con eso y es su trabajo personal decidir en qu\u00e9 lo traduce. Algunos de los textos que escribo para mi labor pedag\u00f3gica tambi\u00e9n vienen de all\u00e1.\n\nLa decisi\u00f3n de desarrollarlo visualmente o musicalmente es de este plano, pero en esencia no tiene ninguna diferencia y un compromiso con el arte es un compromiso con todo el arte.\n\n \n\nPones en el mismo plano de la poes\u00eda y la m\u00fasica, a la pedagog\u00eda, \u00bfpor qu\u00e9?<\/strong>\n\nPara m\u00ed la pedagog\u00eda es uno de los actos m\u00e1s elevados de servicio que puedo hacer. Cuando hablo de servicio me refiero a la expresi\u00f3n de lo que verdaderamente somos. Con la pedagog\u00eda pasa algo muy lindo y es que t\u00fa le est\u00e1s dando algo muy valioso a alguien: informaci\u00f3n. La informaci\u00f3n puede cambiar, dise\u00f1ar o destruir la vida. Yo soy un ser pol\u00edtico en la medida en que mi vida es coherente con esos principios. No se trata de ser inflexible.\n\nRespecto a la m\u00fasica que hiciste para la obra de Jorge Panchoaga, \u00bfc\u00f3mo fue el di\u00e1logo? Es decir, \u00bfes posible que haya comunicaci\u00f3n entre estos dos mundos (el de Jorge y el tuyo) de d\u00f3nde para ti provienen las obras?<\/strong>\n\nS\u00ed, totalmente, es lo mismo que pasa cuando uno se casa con alguien, cuando hace el amor con alguien. O lo que deber\u00eda pasar. Reconozco que desde el contexto de esta entrevista puede parecer que lo que estoy diciendo es muy ermita\u00f1o. Pero no. Voy a hacer la aclaraci\u00f3n, no uno se est\u00e1 desconectando; al contrario, se est\u00e1 conectando, abriendo con todo el mundo. Jorge est\u00e1 en un proceso impresionante como artista, est\u00e1 viviendo sus etapas y hace unas obras muy poderosas, pero \u00e9l no sab\u00eda qu\u00e9 estaba haciendo. Siempre lo ha dicho, cuando inici\u00f3 Dulce y Salada empez\u00f3 a recoger material y a vivir experiencias, su forma creadora es generar una explosi\u00f3n de vivencias y luego tratar de entenderlas.\n\nAs\u00ed lleg\u00f3 a m\u00ed, con 10 a\u00f1os de no s\u00e9 cu\u00e1ntas horas de grabaciones. Me sum\u00e9 a ese boom ca\u00f3tico y lo que hicimos fue que \u00e9l me pas\u00f3 un banco de sonidos y dise\u00f1amos un workflow. Eso es casi tan valioso como la obra misma. \u00c9l quer\u00eda expresar lo que sent\u00eda estando en una poblaci\u00f3n sobre la inmensidad del agua, la vida, la muerte, la naturaleza, los ciclos en las estrellas, la miseria humana, la pobreza, el dolor, el sufrimiento. Todo lo que \u00e9l hab\u00eda visto y vivido durante su trabajo.\n\nAs\u00ed que escog\u00ed los sonidos, cre\u00e9 los resonadores, se usaron grabadoras de cintas, y pas\u00e9 los sonidos por una serie de filtros, se crearon ecos. Dise\u00f1\u00e9 cuatro resonadores y pasamos los sonidos por ah\u00ed. Ella mand\u00f3 a secuenciar su ADN  y me envi\u00f3 los resultados. Yo escog\u00ed una serie de notas y las asign\u00e9 aleatoriamente a esa secuencia. Hicimos unas capas y entonces cuando empiezas a escuchar la m\u00fasica, se va escuchando una nota que va haciendo una secuencia. Luego aparece otra capa que es la otra secuencia.
