How many times does news about ‘contamination in Amazonia’ appear? Perhaps so many that the Repsol company almost managed to make the spill of 11,900 barrels of oil into the sea in mid-January go unnoticed. It occurred in the Peruvian areas of Ventanilla, Santa Rosa, Ancon, and Chancay. At first, the company tried to hush it up, then began to give various versions of the reasons: an extraordinary swell, consequences of the Tonga tsunami, or an unexpected movement. But many point to the lack of maintenance and the total absence of contingency plans.<\/p>\n

Specifically, the parts connecting the Mare Doricum vessel’s tubes to pipes 18 meters under the sea were broken. The result was a direct pumping of underwater oil. The public was outraged, and protests ensued. According to the government – which has asked for international assistance – the oil slick extends over an area equivalent to 320 soccer fields. The fines could be in the billions of dollars. President Pedro Castillo said: “We are facing one of the biggest ecocides that have ever occurred on our coasts.”<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the consequences on the ecosystem are undisguisable: birds with oiled wings, species with oil in their digestive systems, animals modifying their migratory routes, and microorganisms on the seafloor contaminated are producing a decrease of oxygen in the sea. Hundreds of poor fishers have lost their jobs. The consequences have only just begun, and it is not yet easy to estimate how many years they will last. Photographer Musuk Nolte<\/strong> was there to cover the situation. It is, he tells Vist Projects, witnessing a slow death.<\/p>\n

What did you see?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I was able to see, accompanying some of the visits, that there was a severe initial impact: birds submerged in the crude oil. But the most hurtful thing is how it has begun to affect the food chain; it is like a slow death. The birds have stains on their plumage that make them less impervious and die of cold. In other cases, they eat oil. Many birds dive into the sea to feed and end up getting dirtier. It is a vicious circle that will take many years to remedy.<\/p>\n

The company has been cleaning up where it is visible. The most polluted area is where the road goes. Nobody is cleaning that part because there is no access to the beach, you can’t see it from the cliff: you have to fly over the sea. There you can see a radiant orange stain with strange shapes.<\/p>\n

Biologists and other specialists said the spill had impregnated the rocky area where the microorganisms are. It is the beginning of the food chain of all the fish ecosystems in that area. It will be the most long-term effect, and it will be relatively invisible except for the artisanal fishers, who have not been able to fish since then and probably will not be able to do so for many years. They will likely have to change their trade.<\/p>\n

The cleanup operation looks very artisanal. What did you observe?<\/strong><\/p>\n

One of the problems is that the company started to hire local people. Victims are cleaning up. They were fishermen or people who lived around there, without experience or training and, many times, without adequate protection. There they were, on the shore, with rudimentary tools, skimming foam. Others have filter clothes to rub the stones. It is an ant-like task that generates a media impact: it seems that they are doing something because there are so many people, but the cleanup they can achieve in this way is minimal.<\/p>\n

By not having a cleaning protocol, they have been contaminating more because they removed the contaminated material and put it on plastic. In this transfer, they polluted the sand that was not contaminated. It took three weeks until they brought in specialized people. I returned two weeks after the first time, and spill specialists sent by foreign entities had arrived.<\/p>\n

When was the last time you went and how was the place?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I went 8 days ago. The area that already had more attention was visibly cleaner. You no longer saw people submerged in oil but digging. The oil had infiltrated; there were holes of up to one meter. So, the impact is profound even though there is a superficial cleaning.<\/p>\n

How far does the contamination reach?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The current goes north, and people find birds south. That means the birds have been going out of their habitat, stained, fleeing. Diversbirds, Humboldt penguins, and sea lions are part of this ecosystem. Those are places that receive massive migration of species. We do not know how this will modify the productive cycle. The animals that are dying or visibly contaminated have been taken to the Parque de las Leyendas (zoo) for treatment. Only 50 percent survive. And, in reality, only the short term is known. The animals will continue to be poisoned by the waste that remains in the sea.<\/p>\n

Why do you think it has been possible to soften the spill’s impact?<\/strong><\/p>\n

We’re always in a political crisis, and we’ve been in a pretty serious one. That has been covering up the attention on the spill. It’s been a month, and the push has ended up being diluted. The company has not complied with any of the agreed points, and with the State it has been upside down. During the spill, they appointed a Minister of the Environment who had no experience or capacity in the sector. The political crisis ends up aggravating the ecological disaster.<\/p>\n

The instability affects the fact that the company is not cleaning up as fast as possible. The president suspended the company’s operations, but the business community began to pressure the company. They started to fan the specter of shortages and price hikes. They have begun to movilize that fear because they don’t want to have sanctions.<\/p>\n

Amazon\u00eda\u2019? Tal vez tantas que la empresa Repsol casi logra hacer pasar desapercibido el derrame de 11900 barriles de petr\u00f3leo en el mar a mitad de enero. Ocurri\u00f3 en las zonas peruanas de Ventanilla, Santa Rosa, Anc\u00f3n y Chancay. Al principio, la empresa busc\u00f3 silenciarlo, despu\u00e9s comenz\u00f3 a dar variadas versiones sobre los motivos: un oleaje extraordinario, consecuencias del tsunami Tonga, o un movimiento inesperado. Pero muchos se\u00f1alan la falta de mantenimiento y la ausencia total de planes de contingencia.\n\nEn concreto, se rompieron piezas que conectaban las mangueras del buque Mare Doricum a tubos que est\u00e1n 18 metros bajo mar. El resultado fue un bombeo directo de petr\u00f3leo submarino. La ciudadan\u00eda se indign\u00f3 y hubo protestas. Seg\u00fan el Gobierno -que ha pedido ayuda internacional-, la mancha de petr\u00f3leo se extiende por una zona equivalente a 320 canchas de f\u00fatbol. Las multas podr\u00edan ser de miles de millones de d\u00f3lares. El presidente Pedro Castillo dijo: \u201cEstamos ante uno de los ecocidios m\u00e1s grandes que se han suscitado en nuestras costas\u201d.\n\nMientras tanto, las consecuencias sobre el ecosistema son indisimulables: aves con alas empetroladas, especies con petr\u00f3leo en el sistema digestivo, animales que modifican sus rutas migratorias y microorganismos en el fondo del mar contaminados que producen una disminuci\u00f3n del ox\u00edgeno en el mar. Cientos de pescadores pobres se han quedado sin trabajo. Las consecuencias reci\u00e9n empiezan y todav\u00eda no es f\u00e1cil estimar cu\u00e1ntos a\u00f1os podr\u00e1n durar. El fot\u00f3grafo Musuk Nolte estuvo all\u00ed haciendo una cobertura. global_colors_info=\"{}\"]\n\n\u00bfQu\u00e9 has visto?<\/b>\n\nLo que pude ver, acompa\u00f1ando en algunas de las visitas, es que hab\u00eda una afectaci\u00f3n muy seria inicial: aves totalmente sumergidas en el crudo del petr\u00f3leo. Pero lo m\u00e1s serio es c\u00f3mo ha comenzado a afectar la cadena alimenticia, es como una muerte lenta. Las aves tienen manchas en el plumaje que les quita permeabilidad y terminan muriendo de fr\u00edo. En otros casos comen petr\u00f3leo. Muchas aves se sumergen en el mar para alimentarse y se terminan ensuciando m\u00e1s. Es un c\u00edrculo vicioso que tomar\u00e1 muchos a\u00f1os poder remediar.<\/span>\n\nLa empresa ha estado limpiando en donde es visible. Hay una zona, la m\u00e1s contaminada, que es por donde va la carretera. Esa parte no se est\u00e1 limpiando en absoluto porque no hay acceso a la playa, no puedes verlo desde el precipicio: tienes que volar el mar. Ah\u00ed s\u00ed ves una mancha naranja fosforescente con  unas formas extra\u00f1as.<\/span>\n\nLo m\u00e1s serio que contaban los bi\u00f3logos o especialistas es que todo el derrame se ha quedado impregnado en la zona de rocas, en donde est\u00e1n los microorganismos. Es el inicio de la cadena alimenticia, de todos los ecosistemas de peces que viven por esa zona. Esa es la afectaci\u00f3n m\u00e1s a largo plazo y va a ser relativamente invisible. Salvo para los pescadores artesanales, que desde entonces no han podido pescar y probablemente no lo puedan hacer en muchos a\u00f1os. Los afectados terminan limpiando. Eran pescadores o personas que viv\u00edan por all\u00ed, sin experiencia ni capacitaci\u00f3n y, muchas veces, sin la protecci\u00f3n adecuada. Ah\u00ed estaban, en la costa, con herramientas rudimentarias, sacando espuma. Otras tienen pa\u00f1os de filtro que frotan las piedras. Es una labor de hormiga que genera un impacto medi\u00e1tico: parece que se est\u00e1 haciendo algo porque hay much\u00edsima gente pero la limpieza que pueden conseguir as\u00ed es muy poca. <\/span>\n\nAl no tener un protocolo de limpieza han estado contaminando m\u00e1s, porque sacaban lo contaminado y lo pon\u00edan sobre unos pl\u00e1sticos. En ese traslado contaminaban la arena que no estaba contaminada. Pasaron tres semanas hasta que trajeron gente especializada. La zona que ya ten\u00eda m\u00e1s atenci\u00f3n estaba visiblemente m\u00e1s limpia, ya no ven\u00edas a la gente sumergida en petr\u00f3leo sino cavando. El petr\u00f3leo se hab\u00eda infiltrado. Hab\u00eda huecos de hasta un metro. Eso quiere decir que las aves han estado yendo fuera de su espacio de h\u00e1bitat manchadas, huyendo. El ecosistema de las islas est\u00e1 conformado principalmente por aves, ping\u00fcinos de Humboldt y lobos marinos. Son lugares de migraci\u00f3n masiva de especies, no s\u00e9 c\u00f3mo esto va a modificar el ciclo productivo, no se sabe todav\u00eda. A los animales que est\u00e1n agonizando o visiblemente contaminados los han llevado al (zool\u00f3gico) Parque de las Leyendas para hacerles tratamientos. Solo sobreviven el 50 por ciento. Y, en realidad, se sabe solamente el corto plazo. Eso ha estado tapando la atenci\u00f3n sobre el derrame. Ha pasado un mes y el empuje se termin\u00f3 diluyendo. La empresa no ha cumplido con ninguno de los puntos acordados y con el Estado ha estado de cabeza. Con decir que en plena coyuntura del derrame nombraron a un ministro del ambiente que no ten\u00eda ninguna experiencia ni capacidad en el sector. La crisis pol\u00edtica termina agravando el desastre ecol\u00f3gico. <\/span> \n\nLa inestabilidad afecta a que la empresa no est\u00e9 limpiando a la velocidad que deber\u00eda. El presidente suspendi\u00f3 las operaciones de la empresa pero el empresariado empez\u00f3 a meter presi\u00f3n. Empezaron a avivar el fantasma del desabastecimiento y la suba de precios.
