For Felipe Romero Beltr\u00e1n<\/strong>, choosing a subject to photograph implies having time to dedicate to it. Time to be. Time for the questions to appear. Time to answer them. Time to change.<\/p>\n

The Colombian photographer and visual artist is now pursuing a Ph.D. at the Complutense University of Madrid while working on territories where boundaries between bodies, violence, and conflicts are unclear. Like the Rio Bravo, in northern Mexico, where people cross into the United States. How was your work Bravo<\/em> born?<\/strong><\/p>\n

It started organically; it was a project I hadn’t planned. I started doing it because of a visit to northern Mexico to see some friends. The Rio Bravo is fundamental in Mexico geographically, historically, and socially. I had that idea in my head and started taking photographs. After that more anecdotal question about the trip, I asked for a grant from the State. That forces you to set a timetable for the project, with objectives and a particular way of doing it. So I decided to do something close to the river or in the river. I knew the project would be about the Mexican side because of my needed documents. But also because Ido not intend to cover a lot, but to learn.<\/p>\n

I always try to work where I can spend some time. I think it shows a little bit: my photography is very slow. I take a long time. I take a long time in places and try to stop when taking a photograph. It comes out that way. I’ve been there several times, and I walk around.<\/p>\n

I go to an area before the river. The idea of the “landscape before” the border interests me more than the actual place of the conflict. My photography is more comfortable at the entrance. The project has at least another year to go. he questions are verbal; the images are much older than the words. They have this insurmountable component between what you verbalize and what happens. In more political terms, this earlier zone or in-between place is fascinating. It is what is moving me now to do photography, to stop things with the photographic image. Not in its more na\u00efve conception of stopping time but suspending what is in front of it. I also do portraits. So, that question about presenting or representing the other is more intense when the other is in front of you.<\/p>\n

Would you say there is a continuity between Dialecto<\/em>\u00a0and Bravo<\/em>?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Dialecto<\/em> has a more extended history; it started earlier. The project started with some kids who had just crossed the Mediterranean from Morocco. They were in the process of waiting and bureaucratizing their residency in Spain. That can take up to three years, added to the pandemic and other layers that we have to deal with and be migrants. Language, papers, getting a job, going to school.<\/p>\n

In these two projects, what interests me is to detect some characteristics beyond the conflict. There are some concerns about the body and that body crossed by a specific policy. For example, all the European bureaucracy that one goes through to reside legally in a country of the European Union.<\/p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row And a little further back in time, you have made Reducci\u00f3n (Reduction)<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

That started with an invitation to be part of a residency in a cultural center in Lavapi\u00e9s, Madrid. The project began with the idea of working in one of the most emblematic neighborhoods, which is now undergoing a rather violent process of transformation. I started to think about the process of subjugation and police reduction. The project has three parts. In one, I ask where do they do police checks. I understand that they are random. Some characters appear; they call themselves police officers and ask for papers. Those who do not have any have a different process. In these records of the streets, potential scenes appeared. It is a series that I photograph at night.<\/p>\n

I ask two undocumented kids to reproduce the police defense handbook in the other part. Comenc\u00e9 a hacerlo por una visita al norte de M\u00e9xico a ver algunos amigos. El R\u00edo Bravo es fundamental en M\u00e9xico a nivel geogr\u00e1fico, hist\u00f3rico y social. Yo ten\u00eda esa idea rondando en la cabeza. Empec\u00e9 a hacer fotograf\u00edas. Despu\u00e9s de esa cuesti\u00f3n m\u00e1s anecd\u00f3tica del viaje ped\u00ed una subvenci\u00f3n al Estado. Eso te obliga a marcar un cierto cronograma del proyecto, con objetivos y una cierta manera de hacerlo. As\u00ed decid\u00ed hacer algo cercano al r\u00edo o en el r\u00edo. Sab\u00eda que el proyecto iba a ser del lado mexicano, por una cuesti\u00f3n de papeles pero tambi\u00e9n porque el proyecto no ten\u00eda pretensi\u00f3n de abarcar mucho, sino de aprendizaje. <\/span>\n\nIntento trabajar siempre en donde pueda estar un tiempo. Creo que un poco se nota: mi fotograf\u00eda es muy lenta. Tardo, me demoro mucho en los lugares. Intento detenerme en el momento de hacer la fotograf\u00eda. Me sale as\u00ed. El proyecto empieza con unos chicos que acababan de cruzar el Mediterr\u00e1neo desde Marruecos, estaban en proceso de espera y de burocratizaci\u00f3n de su residencia en Espa\u00f1a. Eso puede durar hasta tres a\u00f1os, sumado a la pandemia, y a otras capas que tenemos adem\u00e1s de solventar el ser migrantes. El idioma, los papeles, conseguir un trabajo, escolarizarte. <\/span>\n\nEn estos dos proyectos lo que me interesa es detectar algunas caracter\u00edsticas, m\u00e1s all\u00e1 del conflicto. Hay algunas inquietudes por el cuerpo y ese cuerpo atravesado por una pol\u00edtica espec\u00edfica. global_colors_info=\"{}\"]\n\nY un poco m\u00e1s atr\u00e1s en el tiempo, has hecho \u2018Reducci\u00f3n\u2019<\/b>\n\n<\/span>Eso empez\u00f3 por una invitaci\u00f3n a ser parte de una residencia en un centro cultural en Lavapi\u00e9s, Madrid. El proyecto empieza con la consigna de trabajar en uno de los barrios m\u00e1s emblem\u00e1ticos, que ahora sufre un proceso de transformaci\u00f3n bastante violento. Comenc\u00e9 a pensar sobre el proceso de sometimiento y reducci\u00f3n policial. El proyecto tiene tres partes. En uno pregunto d\u00f3nde se hacen chequeos policiales. Entiendo que son aleatorios, aparecen una serie de personajes que se hacen llamar polic\u00edas y piden papeles. El que no tiene, tiene un proceso diferente. En estos registros de las calles, aparec\u00edan escenas potenciales. Es una serie que yo fotograf\u00edo por la noche. <\/span>\n\nLa otra parte le pido a dos chicos indocumentados que reproduzcan el manual de defensa policial.
