The link between Argentinean Alejandro Erbetta<\/strong> and photography was born on a trip to the north of the country. A Canadian friend gave him an old camera, and he began to explore his gaze. He trained in Buenos Aires many years later, then at the National School of Photography in Arles (France). He also obtained a Ph.D. in Aesthetics of the Arts from the University of Paris 8 Saint-Denis.<\/p>\n

Sus obras fueron expuestas en Europa, Asia y Am\u00e9rica Latina, y \u00e9l sigui\u00f3 viajando pero ya como parte de una pr\u00e1ctica de investigaci\u00f3n. Repiti\u00f3 el viaje de sus bisabuelos desde Italia hacia Argentina y fue juntando informaci\u00f3n, archivos y fotograf\u00edas. Mientras exploraba la memoria familiar \u201ca trav\u00e9s del espacio y el tiempo\u201d tambi\u00e9n entend\u00eda su propia identidad migrante. Todo ese trabajo, luego se concentr\u00f3 en un libro: Reprises<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Is memory an axis of your work?<\/strong><\/p>\n

It certainly is. I have always had a great interest in the past as a possibility of the imaginary. During my adolescence, the literature of (Jorge Luis) Borges influenced me, he saw in memory a chance of fictionalizing time. However, at first, my relationship with photography was centered on travel and wandering. The relationship with memory appeared later.<\/p>\n

Already in France, after having done my first artistic work, I started to reflect on my family history. I was interested in my ancestors who had traveled to Argentina towards the end of the 19th century and were part of that significant displacement of migrants from Europe to Latin America. In a way, the family history was repeating itself. I would have a similar experience a century later, although my itinerary went the opposite direction. There were departures and returns through space and time, like an echo, a cyclical resonance.<\/p>\n

I wanted to travel, return to my ancestors’ path, and articulate the past to the present, although not for nostalgic purposes, but to build my future. It was related to experiencing the rite of passage from one culture to another, an artistic and existential transformation. My big question was to capture that through photography.<\/p>\n

At that time, I began to have regular contact with Italian culture, feel correspondence, and talk to my family. I discovered that we had almost nothing about the family history. There were gaps in the memory, great oblivion. Those blanks and temporary voids became an engine for my research.<\/p>\n

The first idea I had was to articulate the journey toward the family origins with retrospective poetic research. Applying a methodology close to that of a historian, I tried to establish relationships between various documents, texts, archives, and family albums to objectify a story. There was an emphasis on emotion and subjectivity; I was trying to unravel a family enigma, a story lost in time. But how can we reconstruct our history when there are silences, elements we do not know? Is it possible to reconstruct the past and memory through fiction? What would be its legitimacy?<\/p>\n

On my first trip to Buenos Aires, I began to compile information about the history of Italian immigration at the time when my ancestors had traveled. At the same time, I started my family research. I found, for example, a person close to the family, a cousin of my father’s, Rolando Castelli, who knew something of the history.

In 2009, Castelli was 96 years old when I started looking for data. He was the one who showed me clues and gave me some photographs, mediating objects of memory that caused a subtle slippage into my dreams. That is why I think that my travels and explorations began first and foremost as imaginary rather than objective and practical.<\/p>\n

When I returned to France, I began to plan my first trip to northern Italy. Returning to the region of my ancestors awakened in me a deep curiosity. It was to retrace a path in reverse, of intertwined temporalities; it was to confront history, to build it anew. In those years of research, I found concrete elements (documents) that gave me some historical certainties, although everything was always surrounded by mystery. As I belong to the fourth generation, much valuable information has been lost. However, a partial and incomplete reconstruction offered me the possibility of inserting my artist’s imagination. Here we are in the realm of hypotheses; there are no affirmations, only possible stories, speculations. We imagine, for example, how those trips, those lives could have been. From Roland Barthes’ photographic “\u00e7a a \u00e9t\u00e9” (that would have been), we move on to “\u00e7a aurait \u00e9t\u00e9” (that would have been). I based my work on maintaining this state of uncertainty throughout the research process.<\/p>\n

During those years of research, I felt a deep connection with my ancestors, a virtual and, at the same time, close relationship. I established a form of secret and silent dialogue in my travels. Traveling through those regions inspired by oral histories and photographic images gave my artwork an existential dimension. The construction of a narrative memorial that was Reprises became an imaginary territory that accompanies me in my displacements. A fictional transitional space to support the departures and returns. A need, perhaps, to articulate distant worlds, such as here and there, past and present, presence and absence, imaginary and real, those who are no longer here, and those of us who continue to explore this world with wonder.<\/p>\n

Siempre tuve un gran inter\u00e9s por el pasado como posibilidad del imaginario. Durante mi adolescencia me sent\u00ed influenciado por la literatura de (Jorge Luis) Borges, que ve\u00eda en la memoria una posibilidad de ficcionalizar el tiempo. Sin embargo, en un principio mi relaci\u00f3n con la fotograf\u00eda estuvo centrada en el viaje y en la deambulaci\u00f3n. La relaci\u00f3n con la memoria apareci\u00f3 m\u00e1s tarde.\n\nYa en Francia, despu\u00e9s de haber realizado un primer trabajo art\u00edstico, empec\u00e9 a reflexionar sobre mi historia familiar. Me interesaba el hecho de que mis antepasados hab\u00edan viajado a la Argentina hacia fines del siglo XIX y formaron parte de aquel gran desplazamiento de migrantes desde Europa hacia Am\u00e9rica Latina. De cierta manera, la historia familiar se repet\u00eda. Un siglo despu\u00e9s, vivir\u00eda una experiencia similar, aunque mi itinerario fue en sentido inverso. Quise viajar, volver sobre el camino que hab\u00edan realizado mis ancestros, articulando el pasado al presente, aunque no con fines nost\u00e1lgicos sino para construir mi porvenir. Algo que tuviera que ver con la idea de experimentar el rito de pasaje de una cultura a otra, una transformaci\u00f3n art\u00edstica y existencial. Mi gran cuesti\u00f3n fue plasmar eso a trav\u00e9s de la fotograf\u00eda.\n\nEn aquella \u00e9poca empec\u00e9 a tener un contacto asiduo con la cultura italiana, a sentir correspondencias, a hablar con mi familia. Lo que descubr\u00ed es que no se sab\u00eda casi nada de la historia familiar, hab\u00eda huecos de la memoria, un gran olvido. Esos blancos y vac\u00edos temporales se volvieron un motor para mis b\u00fasquedas.\n\nLa primera idea que tuve fue articular el viaje hacia los or\u00edgenes familiares con una investigaci\u00f3n po\u00e9tica retrospectiva. Aplicando una metodolog\u00eda pr\u00f3xima a la de un historiador, intent\u00e9 establecer relaciones entre diversos documentos, textos, archivos y \u00e1lbumes familiares, con el fin de objetivar una historia. En mi caso, hab\u00eda un \u00e9nfasis en la emoci\u00f3n y la subjetividad, intentaba desentra\u00f1ar un enigma familiar, una historia perdida en el tiempo. Pero, \u00bfc\u00f3mo reconstruir nuestra propia historia cuando hay silencios, elementos que desconocemos? \u00bfEs posible reconstruir el pasado y la memoria a trav\u00e9s de la ficci\u00f3n? \u00bfCu\u00e1l ser\u00eda su legitimidad?\n\nEn un primer viaje a Buenos Aires empec\u00e9 a compilar informaci\u00f3n sobre la historia de la inmigraci\u00f3n italiana en la \u00e9poca en la que hab\u00edan viajado mis antepasados. Al mismo tiempo comenc\u00e9 mi investigaci\u00f3n familiar. Por ello pienso que mis viajes y exploraciones comenzaron ante todo siendo imaginarios antes que efectivos y reales.\n\nAl volver a Francia comenc\u00e9 a planificar mi primer viaje al norte de Italia. Volver a la regi\u00f3n de mis antepasados despertaba en m\u00ed una profunda curiosidad. Era remontar un camino en sentido inverso, de temporalidades entrecruzadas; era afrontar una historia, para construirla nuevamente. En aquellos a\u00f1os de investigaciones fui encontrando elementos concretos (documentos) que me dieron algunas certezas hist\u00f3ricas, aunque todo estuvo siempre rodeado de misterio. Como pertenezco a la cuarta generaci\u00f3n, muchas informaciones valiosas se hab\u00edan ido perdiendo. Sin embargo, una reconstrucci\u00f3n parcial y fragmentaria, me ofreci\u00f3 la posibilidad de insertar mi imaginario de artista. Nos situamos aqu\u00ed en el terreno de las hip\u00f3tesis, no hay afirmaciones, s\u00f3lo historias posibles, especulaciones. Nos imaginamos, por ejemplo, c\u00f3mo podr\u00edan haber sido aquellos viajes, aquellas vidas. Del \u00ab \u00e7a a \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00bb (eso ha sido) fotogr\u00e1fico de Roland Barthes, pasamos al \u00ab \u00e7a aurait \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00bb (eso habr\u00eda sido). Una forma de di\u00e1logo secreto y silencioso que se establec\u00eda en el curso de mis desplazamientos. Recorrer aquellas regiones inspir\u00e1ndome de las historias orales e im\u00e1genes fotogr\u00e1ficas hizo que mi trabajo art\u00edstico tuviera una dimensi\u00f3n existencial. La construcci\u00f3n de un memorial narrativo que fue <\/span>Reprises<\/span><\/i> se volvi\u00f3 un territorio imaginario que me acompa\u00f1a en mis desplazamientos. Un espacio transicional de ficci\u00f3n para soportar las partidas y regresos.
