At the end of last year, Dan Agostini<\/strong> inaugurated an exhibition of Palomas<\/em> at a museum in one of S\u00e3o Paulo’s most elitist and right-wing (coxas<\/em>) neighborhoods. With crowdfunding, the open day, she paid for several uber and took many of the protagonists of her project to see the exhibition. They were trans women, some sex workers, who live and transit in very distant and different parts of the city. That day, trans women filled the museum, making all the difference for Dan. One of the most memorable visits was that of Janaina, one of the women portrayed by Dan, who also worked as her assistant in the project’s first months. Jana was imprisoned unfairly, but she had a special regime where she could go out a few days a year to spend special dates with her family. In December, she had an outing and took advantage of one of the days to visit the museum. That is one of the impacts that Palomas has achieved.<\/p>\n

Dan identifies herself as a non-binary person who decided to investigate the relationship between gender identity and social environment. She has worked with trans women in India<\/a>, Nepal<\/a>, and Brazil. Dan assumes photography as a means of encountering other people. She says that perhaps that is what she got from her (unfinished) training in psychology. But she also firmly believes that photography is also a political tool that allows her to initiate discussions and support necessary debates in our society<\/p>\n

You say that photography is a means to meet other people. In your works, those encounters are with some specific people.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yes, in 2017 with Gabi Portilho in our Coletivo Doroteia<\/a>, we started talking about gender. And in those searches, I always leaned toward the LGBTQIA+ community. I identify myself as a non-binary and sapat\u00e3o lesbian person. That is, that community was already my place. At that time, with Gabi, we did a pretty extensive project about funk made by women. And I was more dedicated to what we called sapat\u00e3o funk created by and for lesbians.<\/p>\n

In 2018 I started working with trans women, coinciding with the moment I assumed myself as a non-binary person. My interest was to use photography to do gender research to understand how the environment in which a person lives interferes with their gender perceptions and how gender happens in a particular environment.<\/p>\n

By that time, I had already worked with women in the Middle East and started looking into transsexuality. In 2019 I went to India to look at the relationship between transsexuality and religion. I then went to Nepal, a similar place with some religious similarities to India, yet the situation is very different. In 2020, I was planning to go back, but the pandemic started, so I focused on developing that work here.<\/p>\n

With a grant from National Geographic, I started Palomas<\/em>, a work with pioneer trans women and transvestites. I mean that these women are a little older, and they come from when I was also entering the community and began to circulate in specific spaces, that is, the late 90s and early 2000s.<\/p>\n

Why in Palomas<\/em> did you specifically seek to work with women of those ages?<\/strong><\/p>\n

My work asks how gender identities move and change as the environment and possibilities alter. These women are in their 40s, and the discussion about gender they have experienced is very different from now. I am interested in working with younger people, but I could not start directly with them. The discussion is more open. There is a very different mentality that allows a different positioning and empowerment. Even families are more willing to embrace these identities.<\/p>\n

The women who are part of Palomas are fundamental because they built everything we have now. We can live it thanks to them and their battle, thanks to their bodies. Although nothing is totally resolved, we are in this process because of them.<\/p>\n

What you say is very important, especially because trans women are victims of multiple violence and their life expectancy is very low compared to the rest of the population.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In Brazil, the life expectancy of trans women is up to 35 years old. It is not common to find older women. In Palomas<\/em>, there are three women aged 55 to 60 years of age. Camila, for example, is 62 years old, she is the oldest, and her speech is lovely because she is fully aware that she is a survivor. She reached that age because she comes from a rural area and a very open and calm peasant family. Camila assumed herself as a woman in her teens. However, there appears to be the issue of passing; Camila lived in a hacienda and then migrated to a small town where no one knew she was a trans woman. At 59 years, she lived in Sao Paulo and began to understand and go through the difficulties that many trans women have to live through.<\/p>\n

How is the time when you make pictures with them?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The work began in the Florecer house, a shelter for trans women part of a program promoted by the mayor Fernando Haddad. During the first part of the pandemic, I worked there. There was a white awning on the house outside; they had some meals and spent the afternoon there. I noticed that the light on that awning looked lovely, and I started a series of portraits there. Those are the photos they enjoy the most. They prepare themselves and decide how they want to pose and with what. Whenever I start working with a woman, we take a portrait with the awning as a backdrop.<\/p>\n

Now I am accompanying the women who leave the shelter in the process of acquiring autonomy, getting a house, and a job. And then I do the other part of the work, which is more documentary and consists of accompanying them in their daily lives. That’s how I have started to work with their friends or girlfriends.<\/p>\n

Photography allows me to meet them, and that motivates me a lot. But above all, it is a political tool.<\/p>\n

El d\u00eda de la inauguraci\u00f3n, con la ayuda de un crowfunding pag\u00f3 varios uber y llev\u00f3 a  muchas de las protagonistas de su proyecto a ver la exposici\u00f3n. Se trataba de mujeres trans, algunas trabajadoras sexuales, que viven y transitan en lugares muy distantes y diferentes de la ciudad. Ese d\u00eda, el museo se llen\u00f3 de trans y travestis, y para Dan eso hizo toda la diferencia.  Una de las visitas m\u00e1s especiales fue la de Janaina, una de las mujeres retratadas por Dan, quien adem\u00e1s trabaj\u00f3 como su asistente en los primeros meses del proyecto. Jana fue presa de una manera muy injusta, pero tiene un r\u00e9gimen especial en el que puede  salir algunos d\u00edas al a\u00f1o para pasar fechas especiales con su familia. En diciembre tuvo una salida y aprovech\u00f3 uno de los d\u00edas para ir al museo. Ese es uno de los impactos que ha logrado <\/span>Palomas.<\/span><\/i> <\/span>\n\nDan se identifica como una persona no binaria que decidi\u00f3 investigar la relaci\u00f3n entre identidad de g\u00e9nero y medio social. Ha trabajado con mujeres trans en <\/span>India<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>Nepal<\/span><\/a> y Brasil. Asume la fotograf\u00eda como un medio para el encuentro con otras personas. Y en esas b\u00fasquedas yo siempre terminaba inclin\u00e1ndome hacia la comunidad LGBTQIA+, yo me identifico como una persona no binaria y sapat\u00e3o l\u00e9sbica. Es decir, esa comunidad ya era mi lugar. En ese momento con Gabi hicimos un proyecto bastante extenso sobre funk hecho por mujeres. Y yo me dediqu\u00e9 m\u00e1s a aquel que llamamos funk sapat\u00e3o creado por y para mujeres lesbianas.\n\nEn 2018 empec\u00e9 a trabajar con mujeres trans, eso coincidi\u00f3 con el momento en que yo me asum\u00ed como una persona no binaria. Mi inter\u00e9s era utilizar la fotograf\u00eda para hacer una investigaci\u00f3n sobre g\u00e9nero, que consiste en entender c\u00f3mo el medio en el que una persona vive interfiere en las percepciones de g\u00e9nero de ella. C\u00f3mo el g\u00e9nero sucede en un determinado ambiente.\n\nPara ese momento yo ya hab\u00eda trabajado con mujeres en Oriente Medio y empec\u00e9 a indagar por la transexualidad en ese contexto. En 2019 fui a India para ver la relaci\u00f3n entre transexualidad y religi\u00f3n y luego fui a Nepal, que es un lugar parecido y que comparte algunas similitudes religiosas con India, y, sin embargo, la situaci\u00f3n es muy diferente. En 2020, pensaba regresar, pero empez\u00f3 la pandemia, as\u00ed que me enfoqu\u00e9 en desarrollar ese trabajo aqu\u00ed.\n\nCon una beca de National Geographic inici\u00e9 Palomas, un trabajo con mujeres transexuales y travestis pioneras, mujeres ra\u00edz por decirlo de alguna manera. Quiero decir que se trata de mujeres un poco mayores, y que vienen de la \u00e9poca en la que yo tambi\u00e9n fui entrando a la comunidad y empec\u00e9 a circular en ciertos espacios, o sea, finales g\u00e9nero van movi\u00e9ndose y cambiando conforme el medio y las posibilidades cambian. Estas mujeres tienen unos 40 a\u00f1os, la discusi\u00f3n sobre g\u00e9nero que ellas han vivido a lo largo de su vida es muy diferente de la que se vive ahora. Me interesa trabajar con personas m\u00e1s j\u00f3venes, pero no pod\u00eda empezar directamente con ellas. En este momento la discusi\u00f3n est\u00e1 m\u00e1s abierta, hay una mentalidad muy diferente y eso permite un posicionamiento y un empoderamiento diferente. Incluso las familias est\u00e1n m\u00e1s dispuestas a abrazar esas identidades.\n\nLas mujeres que hacen parte de Palomas son fundamentales porque ellas construyeron todo lo que nosotros tenemos ahora, podemos vivirlo gracias a ellas y su batalla, gracias a sus cuerpos. No es com\u00fan encontrar mujeres mayores. En Palomas hay tres mujeres en el rango de los 55 a los 60. Y ellas son realmente sobrevivientes. Camila, por ejemplo, tiene 62 a\u00f1os, ella es la mayor y es muy bonito su discurso porque ella tiene total conciencia de que es una sobreviviente. Entiende que ella logr\u00f3 llegar a esa edad porque viene de una zona rural y de una familia de campesinos muy abierta y tranquila, ella se asumi\u00f3 como mujer desde muy joven. Sin embargo, ah\u00ed aparece el tema del passing (passabilidade), Camila viv\u00eda en una hacienda y luego migr\u00f3 a una peque\u00f1a ciudad donde nadie sab\u00eda que era una mujer trans. Durante la primera parte de la pandemia yo empec\u00e9 a trabajar all\u00e1 y en la parte externa de la casa hab\u00eda un toldo blanco, ah\u00ed ellas tomaban algunas comidas y pasaban la tarde. Yo not\u00e9 que la luz sobre ese toldo se ve\u00eda muy bonita y empec\u00e9 ah\u00ed una serie de retratos. Esas son las fotos que ellas m\u00e1s disfrutan, se arreglan, se preparan y deciden c\u00f3mo quieren posar y con qu\u00e9. Siempre que empiezo a trabajar con una mujer vamos all\u00e1 y hacemos un retrato con el toldo como fondo. <\/span>\n\nAhora estoy acompa\u00f1ando a las mujeres que salen de ese albergue en el proceso de adquirir autonom\u00eda, conseguir casa, trabajo. Y ah\u00ed hago la otra parte del trabajo que es m\u00e1s documental y que consiste en acompa\u00f1arlas en su cotidianidad. As\u00ed he empezado a trabajar con las amigas o las novias de ellas tambi\u00e9n. <\/span>\n\nLa fotograf\u00eda me permite el encuentro con ellas y eso me motiva mucho. capacidad de hacer eco de algunas historias, de lograr que alcancen otras atm\u00f3sferas y as\u00ed se pueda hacer justamente lo que estamos haciendo ahora: discutiendo estas preguntas, pensando en c\u00f3mo y cu\u00e1les son las mejores maneras de lidiar con eso, de hablar de esto y de ponerlo sobre la mesa. Todo el arte tiene ese poder.\n\nNo voy a decir que me siento 100% satisfecha con eso, porque los cambios son muy lentos y cuando se trabaja tan cerca de algunas situaciones y personas esa lentitud de la transformaci\u00f3n trae mucha impotencia. Cada vez que recibo una de esas historias de violencia tan cotidianas, eso se hace m\u00e1s evidente. Y yo me pregunto, \u00bfqu\u00e9 estoy haciendo? \u00bfpara qu\u00e9 sirve esto?
