For Uiler Costa-Santos<\/strong>, a Brazilian photographer, two moments marked his desire to be a photographer. Uiler grew up in a favela in Salvador da Bahia, Brazil. When he was about 15 years old, one of his aunts went to live in Switzerland and sent a postcard. It looked, Uiler says, as a dream image: a little house in the middle of nature, with white snow and a mountain. He could not believe that such a thing existed: the reality around him was very different. Something remained, the deep desire to experience such a landscape.<\/p>\n

When he got a camera, took it on his honeymoon, and started taking many pictures. He had no intention of it becoming a job: the camera was and still is a tool to relate to the world, to question and understand his social experiences. Uiler says that he does not consider himself a creative photographer and that all his experiences start from a very attentive observation. In 2017 he started the project Syzygy: the cosmology of low tide (Siz\u00edgia: a cosmologia da mar\u00e9 baixa).<\/em> Twice a month, an astronomical event happens: the moon, the earth, and the sun align. It is known as syzygy. It is also the moment of the highest or lowest tide on the coast. The syzygy, explains the author, \u201care moments of connection in which the sea, the soil, and the rivers build new reliefs and geographies. They are moments in which the landscape is transformed, and a revelation occurs. During the syzygys, the landscape is transmuted, allowing us to perceive the everyday and its constant capacity for creation. I find the main visual material for my work in these formations of very low or very high tides. How did you start this project?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The project was born in 2017. The full name is Syzygy: the cosmology of low tide<\/em> and in it, I am studying my relationship with my territory. I have always been interested in landscapes since I saw that postcard. An image\u2019s capacity is essential to invoke the imagination, which is a powerful tool. Imagination is something that neither the worst policies nor the worst situations can take away from a person; it is internal.<\/p>\n

Syzygy<\/em> comes from my desire to create new landscapes for a possible existence. I set out, then, to talk about that beautiful feeling awakened when we are in contact with nature. Capitalism has led us to think that we are something different from nature. Everything is interconnected, but we live anesthetized. There are things that we no longer feel because we are busy surviving.<\/p>\n

I believe these images can reverse anesthesia and make people awaken their senses and their capacity to imagine new possibilities of existence in this territory.<\/p>\n

In that sense, producing images that stress the differences and similarities between space and nature through the abstraction of the lived territory itself allows me to construct visual enigmas that, photographically, open up the real for a new reality. How do you make these images?<\/strong><\/p>\n

All photographers have a big challenge: everything has already been photographed and seen. How can I talk about something I felt about something I saw on two-dimensional support? How can I transmit that feeling to the photograph? With Syzygy<\/em> I understood it wasn\u2019t going to work at ground level, so I started to do some experiments. When I went up at a building scale, I realized that the silence and the perspective allowed me to see different things. But it wasn\u2019t enough.<\/p>\n

In 2015 I did a job with a perfect budget, and I tried something that had caught my attention a lot before aerial landscape photography. So I made the first flight, and it was like a revelation: at a specific altitude, neither too low nor too high, if you are very focused, you get to see other things. It\u2019s like opening a window. And if you are very tuned in, you can see other landscapes. So that window became an enigma. That\u2019s when I decided to create those visual enigmas that allow us to reflect on our existence in this space-time. And they will enable me to talk about our relationship with nature.<\/p>\n

I take photos in overflights over the Todos os Santos Bay at a specific moment that happens twice a month, the syzygy, an astronomical phenomenon: the moment when the sun, the earth, and the moon align. When that happens, we have the mar\u00e9 grande, the month\u2019s lowest or highest tide. I chose to take the photos when the tide was shallow; I realized that I could see more of the coastline that way. Intriguingly, just the attentive observation of nature at a specific time can lead to so many things.<\/p>\n

This idea of experiencing the landscape is fascinating. What is a landscape for you, and how do you experienced it?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I like the concept of landscape by the geographer Milton Santos: \u201ceverything we see that our vision reaches is landscape. It is formed by volumes, but also by colors, movements, smells, sounds\u201d. The traditional way of illustrating the landscape, showing the horizon, does not work for me. My photos are landscapes that everyone experiences and interprets in different ways. I am interested in generating an enchantment through them, not that people recognize the place, but that they can activate their imagination.<\/p>\n

Something happens with photography that might not happen if I were directly in the place because the world is full of distractions. I am interested in enchanting the person who sees the image and begins to ask questions. When you see the image, there are two aspects: the imaginary and the dream, and the other is to open the possibilities for a new reality.<\/p>\n

I understood it was necessary to conceive photographs that returned more questions than answers in a world loaded with images. Developing the imagination by observing one\u2019s territory allows new possibilities of living and feeling, recovering the experience of being in contact through the senses. Abstraction through visual enigmas plays an important role, especially for populations living in contexts of greater social, racial, and economic vulnerability, for whom the right to landscape is restricted.<\/p>\n

It is not so common, even though we are in Latin America, for a photographer to talk about the need to solve practical life to be able to create.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Carrying out this project is quite complex, mainly in a country where reality is also tricky. From the place where I come from, it is improbable to be able to produce a work like this and make a living from photography. The challenges for an artist to live with dignity in Brazil are immense. It\u2019s almost audacious, as my grandmother would say.<\/p>\n

But I have artistic practice as a condition of life, and, for me, imagination has been a potent tool. We must try to preserve the imagination in children, the ungovernable capacity to imagine.<\/p>\n

Currently, the Syzygy project has six visual chapters in development. Se le conoce como sizigia. En la costa se vive como el momento de la marea m\u00e1s alta o la m\u00e1s baja.<\/span> Las sizigias,<\/span> explica el autor, \u201cson instantes de conexi\u00f3n en que el mar, el suelo y los r\u00edos construyen nuevos relieves y geograf\u00edas. Se trata de momentos en los que el paisaje se transforma, y sucede una revelaci\u00f3n. Durante las sizigias el paisaje se transmuta, permiti\u00e9ndonos  percibir el cotidiano y su constante capacidad de creaci\u00f3n. En esas formaciones de mareas muy bajas o muy altas encuentro el principal material visual para mi trabajo. La imaginaci\u00f3n es algo que ni las peores pol\u00edticas, ni las peores situaciones pueden quitarle a una persona, es algo muy interior. <\/span>\n\nSizigia<\/span><\/i> parte de mi deseo de crear nuevos paisajes para una existencia posible. Me propuse, entonces, hablar sobre ese sentimiento maravilloso que se despierta cuando estamos en contacto con la naturaleza. <\/span>El capitalismo nos ha llevado a pensar que somos algo diferente de la naturaleza, que hay una separaci\u00f3n. En realidad todo est\u00e1 interconectado, pero vivimos anestesiados, hay cosas que ya no sentimos porque estamos ocupados en sobrevivir.<\/span>\n\nCreo que estas im\u00e1genes tienen la capacidad de revertir esa anestesia y hacer que las personas despierten sus sentidos y su capacidad de imaginar nuevas posibilidades de existencia en este territorio. <\/span>\n\nEn ese sentido, producir im\u00e1genes que tensionan las diferencias y similitudes entre espacio y naturaleza por medio de la abstracci\u00f3n del propio territorio vivido me permite construir enigmas visuales que, fotogr\u00e1ficamente, abren lo real para una nueva realidad. Pero no era suficiente.<\/span>\n\nEn 2015 hice un trabajo con un muy buen presupuesto, e intent\u00e9 algo que me hab\u00eda llamado mucho la atenci\u00f3n antes: la fotograf\u00eda a\u00e9rea de paisaje. As\u00ed hice el primer vuelo y fue como una revelaci\u00f3n: en una altura espec\u00edfica, ni muy baja ni muy alta, si uno est\u00e1 muy concentrado logra ver otras cosas, es como abrir una ventana. Y si se est\u00e1 muy sintonizado, se logra ver otros paisajes. As\u00ed esa ventana se convirti\u00f3 en un enigma. Ah\u00ed decid\u00ed crear esos enigmas visuales que nos permitan reflexionar sobre nuestra existencia en este espacio-tiempo. Y a m\u00ed me permiten hablar de nuestra relaci\u00f3n con la naturaleza.<\/span>\n\nHago fotos en sobrevuelos sobre la Bah\u00eda de Todos los Santos en un momento espec\u00edfico que sucede dos veces al mes, la sizigia, que es un fen\u00f3meno astron\u00f3mico: el momento en que el sol, la tierra y la luna se alinean. Cuando eso sucede tenemos la <\/span>mar\u00e9 grande<\/span><\/i>, es decir, la marea m\u00e1s baja o la m\u00e1s alta del mes. Eleg\u00ed hacer las fotos cuando la marea est\u00e1 muy baja, me di cuenta de que as\u00ed pod\u00eda ver m\u00e1s cosas del litoral. No est\u00e1 formado \u00fanicamente por vol\u00famenes, sino tambi\u00e9n por colores, movimientos, olores, sonidos\u201d. La forma cl\u00e1sica de ilustrar el paisaje, evidenciando el horizonte, no me funciona. Mis fotos son paisajes que cada uno experimenta e interpreta de maneras diferentes. Me interesa generar un encantamiento a trav\u00e9s de ellas, no que la gente reconozca el lugar, sino que pueda activar su imaginaci\u00f3n.<\/span>\n\nPara m\u00ed con la fotograf\u00eda sucede algo que quiz\u00e1 no suceder\u00eda si yo estuviera directamente en el lugar, porque el mundo est\u00e1 cargado de distracciones. Me interesa encantar a la persona que vea la im\u00e1gen y empiece a hacerse preguntas. Son dos aspectos, est\u00e1 el del imaginario y el sue\u00f1o, cuando se est\u00e1 viendo la imagen, y el otro es abrir las posibilidades para una nueva realidad. <\/span>\n\nEntend\u00ed que en un mundo cargado de im\u00e1genes era necesario concebir fotograf\u00edas que devolvieran m\u00e1s preguntas que respuestas. Desarrollar la imaginaci\u00f3n observando el propio territorio permite nuevas posibilidades de vivir y de sentir, recobrando la experiencia de estar en contacto por medio de lo sensible. La abstracci\u00f3n mediante enigmas visuales cumple un rol importante, en especial para las poblaciones que viven en contextos de mayor vulnerabilidad social, racial y econ\u00f3mica, para quienes el derecho al paisaje es restringido.<\/span>\n\nNo es tan com\u00fan, a pesar de que estemos en Latinoam\u00e9rica, que un fot\u00f3grafo hable de la necesidad de resolver la vida pr\u00e1ctica para despu\u00e9s poder crear.<\/b>\n\nLlevar a cabo este proyecto es bastante dif\u00edcil, principalmente en un pa\u00eds donde la realidad tambi\u00e9n es dif\u00edcil. Desde el lugar del que vengo es muy poco probable que se pueda producir un trabajo como este y vivir de la fotograf\u00eda. Los desaf\u00edos para que un artista pueda vivir con dignidad en Brasil son inmensos. Casi una audacia, como dir\u00eda mi abuela.<\/span>\n\nPero tengo la pr\u00e1ctica art\u00edstica como condici\u00f3n de vida y, para m\u00ed, la imaginaci\u00f3n ha sido una herramienta muy poderosa. Es justo eso lo que debemos intentar conservar en los ni\u00f1os, esa capacidad ingobernable de imaginar.<\/span>\n\n<\/span>\n\nActualmente, el proyecto Siz\u00edgia cuenta con seis cap\u00edtulos visuales en desarrollo.
