His early works positioned him as an innovator of Latin American photography and a human rights activist. <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.metmuseum.org\/art\/collection\/search\/714861\">La Clase<\/a><\/em> &#8211;the work that kicks off his photographic essay Buena memoria- is perhaps his most emblematic work. It is based on a portrait of the first-grade high school class that Brodsky attended during his time at the Colegio Nacional de Buenos Aires. The black and white image (1967) has been enlarged and intervened with color annotations that tell the story of each classmate, two of whom disappeared during the cruelest period of Videla&#8217;s military dictatorship. Their faces are inside a crossed-out circle: a gesture that combines the innocence of the childish stroke with the terror that would ensue years later.<\/p>\n<p>Since those days, Brodsky has remained faithful to that aesthetic that mixes intervened photography and a permanent denunciation of state violence. But his defiant attitude, treatment of other photographers&#8217; work, and use of color in images charged with violence and aspirations for social change have earned him numerous detractors. For his critics, Brodsky moves dangerously on the line that separates activism from the instrumentalization of social struggles. This trait may have intensified in recent years: the artist has stopped using archival photographs to incorporate a &#8220;real-time&#8221; record of social outbursts in the region. There are, for example, the series dedicated to the National Strike in Colombia in 2019 and the work <em>Jornadas de noviembre<\/em>, which he produced four-handed with Fernando Bryce (Lima, 1965). The latter documents the large demonstration that occurred due to the dismissal of Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra, and his replacement by Manuel Merino at the end of 2020. An event ended with the death of two young men, Inti Sotelo and Jack Bryan Pintado, at the hands of the police.<\/p>\n<p>Projects such as these generate complex questions: Has Brodsky managed to keep the intuitions that triggered his first works alive? Has he become, instead, an opportunist of the image, a representative of what we could call the &#8220;extractivism&#8221; of social issues? Can an art committed to prevalent causes be politically deactivated when it enters a circuit of galleries and museums? And in the last two years, Fernando Bryce has become a crucial road companion for the new aspirations of the Argentine creator. Considered one of today&#8217;s most critical Peruvian artists, Bryce has produced since the late 1990s an extensive body of work that draws, like Brodsky&#8217;s, on archival images. His ink drawings reproduce in detail magazine covers, posters, advertising, and propaganda designs to construct new ways of representing historical memory.<\/p>\n<p>The affinity between the two, though not technical, is evident at the level of ideas. Moreover, Bryce has also been the focus of some controversy. When in 2012, he presented the exhibition &#8220;Drawing Modern History&#8221; at the Lima Art Museum, Fernando de Szyszlo dedicated several lapidary criticisms to him. For the modernist painter -whose taste has decisively influenced a sector of Peruvian collecting- Bryce&#8217;s practice is not art. The artist has continued to produce a work that seems ready to cannibalize universal history. In his hands, the record of events is transformed into an enigmatic device, where multiple gazes appear ingeniously superimposed -the drawing is an interpretation of the photographic image, which in turn is an interpretation of reality- and where irony tends to creep in among disciplined and meticulous gestures.<\/p>\n<p>Marcelo Brodsky and Fernando Bryce have just shared a residency at Espacio 23 in Miami, where they created the piece <em>Territorios<\/em>, which denounces the killing of Latin American activists who fight for social justice and the preservation of the environment. Bryce welcomed us to his workshop in Lima, where we were able to connect with Brodsky via Zoom. This conversation records a transitional moment in the work of both artists: a process intensified by the experience of collaborative work.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>How did this collaboration come about?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Marcelo:<\/strong> Fernando and I have coincided in several biennials and exhibitions in the last fifteen years. The last one was an exhibition I did at the Henrique Far\u00eda Gallery in New York in 2020. Shortly after, Vizcarra was dismissed by the Peruvian Congress, putting Merino in his place, and people took to the streets in the middle of the pandemic. At that time, I was following the National Strike in Colombia. Like Fernando, I have worked mainly with historical materials. Maybe the confinement led me to address the present; I don&#8217;t know. Perhaps, it was because I could no longer enjoy the streets and only see them in photos. When I heard about what happened in Peru, I started to talk on the phone with Fernando because he is a very sharp commentator on reality. Then came the murder of Inti Sotelo and Bryan Pintado, and Merino fell. I then decided to do a piece on those demonstrations in Plaza San Martin. I chose five images from different photographers from the Efe Agency, which I rented, and I invited Fernando to work with me. I intervened in the photos, and he made drawings based on the same images, using his way of working.<\/p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row custom_padding_last_edited=&#8221;on|phone&#8221; Working with contemporary images is something I had only experimented with at the beginning of my work, in a particular series, when I was fine-tuning my methods. Since then, I have worked on historical subjects. Addressing the present was an exciting challenge to rethink my work. I was only able to make the drawings this year, and it was in Miami, in residence I shared with Marcelo, that we were finally able to put together the pieces of the Jornadas de noviembre.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How did you go from <em>Jornadas de noviembre<\/em> to <em>Territorios<\/em>?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Marcelo:<\/strong> It all started because Jorge Perez, owner of the Espacio 23 collection, stopped by the Met, where my work La Clase is. He wrote to me to see me, but the pandemic arrived, and that was impossible. Then he wrote to me again recently and proposed to do the residency at his place. I accepted, but I proposed a different idea to his team: I wanted to continue working with Fernando. &#8220;Fernando Bryce?&#8221; they asked me. &#8220;Yes, of course.&#8221; We arranged to coincide the month of June and arrived with the idea of working in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fernando:<\/strong> That topic interested us for several reasons. It is a topical issue and a regional conflict with global effects. On the other hand, Marcelo has Ukrainian origins, and I am interested in political history and geopolitics. When we arrived in Miami, we bought books on the history of the war, art, and war, but everything changed there. We spoke Spanish all the time. In the gallery, in the streets, the gallery staff spoke Spanish, and there was a Peruvian restaurant next door. So we said: why don&#8217;t we do something about Latin America? Thinking about the relations between Ukraine and our own experience, we started to talk about the dismemberment of territories, the splitting of ideologies, and the crisis of certainties. That word, &#8220;dismemberment,&#8221; which Marcelo mentioned, brought us the image of Tupac Amaru, which interested us not only as a historical anti-colonial leader in Latin America but as a symbol of a global situation. The Norwegian Human Rights Fund, which financed a project for me in Bergen two months ago, has an office to protect social leaders in Colombia. When the assassination occurred, I called them and asked them to put me in contact with Jesusita&#8217;s organization. That&#8217;s how we got to talk to the sons. Two days later, the sons call us asking for help to leave Colombia. They were terrified; their mother had just been killed and they did not know where to turn. Here we moved from the construction site to another terrain. We were utterly desperate; we didn&#8217;t know what to do to help them. We called the Norwegian organization and Amnesty International, but it was impossible. Finally, I called my friend in Washington, I told her the situation. How to avoid the danger of aestheticizing or beautifying that which documents pain and barbarism?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Fernando:<\/strong> There are very sinister images that I don&#8217;t feel like drawing. But there are also images that it is necessary to interpret from art because they have an inescapable symbolic power. Finally, we are narrating. That is an issue that concerns us for ethical reasons. If it is not the suitable medium for what one wanted to say, that&#8217;s another thing, but I don&#8217;t see that we aestheticize anything. There is an aesthetic, of course, but every plastic manifestation has an aesthetic. Politics also has an aesthetic.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marcelo:<\/strong> It is an old discussion about the representation of genocide, one of the main discussions in the art of the 20th and 21st centuries. I am referring to the texts by Celan, Foucault, Georges Didi-Huberman on the Holocaust. In Images despite everything, Didi-Huberman talks about three images of the Polish resistance that illustrate the gas chambers. Despite all the discussions on the subject, these images prove something that nothing else proves in the same way. I have just done a paper on a German genocide in Namibia with some brutal photos. Talking about genocide is no joke. The color in that series is softer, and the works are minor, but when you see that, you understand what happened. And there is no other way to tell it because nobody reads it if you write a text. The images allow you to narrate the event, and the technique of intervening the photos with color intensifies the impact and generates an emotional bond with the viewer. That&#8217;s what interests me.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fernando:<\/strong> The image, by its very peculiar nature, so non-literal, creates a different impact than the written text. That is also where the questions come in. Marcelo mentioned an extreme case of testimonial photographs from concentration camps. Still, there are also works made from a much more comfortable situation, by artists who report or reflect on what is happening in the world from their desks. This practice goes back to Goya, who lived through the Napoleonic invasion of Spain from afar, and from his comfortable armchair, he made the drawings we all know. It is a testimony, but not a direct one, that inaugurates a tradition of reflecting on the world and what is happening, which is appropriately modern.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marcelo:<\/strong> Something similar happens with Picasso&#8217;s Guernica. He is talking about the death of his people. We are talking about ours. Because the truth is that Fernando and I are Latin American. Sus primeras obras lo posicionaron como un innovador de la fotograf\u00eda latinoamericana y un activista de los derechos humanos. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.metmuseum.org\/art\/collection\/search\/714861\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">La clase<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u2014el trabajo con el que arranca su ensayo fotogr\u00e1fico <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Buena memoria<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2014 es tal vez su obra m\u00e1s emblem\u00e1tica. Est\u00e1 basada en un retrato de la secci\u00f3n de primer grado de secundaria a la que perteneci\u00f3 Brodsky en su paso por el Colegio Nacional de Buenos Aires. Tomada en 1967, la imagen en blanco y negro ha sido ampliada e intervenida con anotaciones a color que narran la historia de cada compa\u00f1ero de clase, dos de ellos desaparecidos durante la \u00e9poca m\u00e1s cruel de la dictadura militar de Videla. Sus rostros est\u00e1n dentro de un c\u00edrculo tachado: un gesto que combina la inocencia del trazo infantil con el terror que sobrevendr\u00eda a\u00f1os m\u00e1s tarde.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Desde esos d\u00edas, Brodsky se ha mantenido fiel a esa est\u00e9tica donde se mezclan la fotograf\u00eda intervenida y una denuncia permanente de la violencia estatal. Pero su actitud desafiante, su tratamiento personal del trabajo de otros fot\u00f3grafos, el uso del color en im\u00e1genes cargadas de violencia y aspiraciones de cambio social, le han valido numerosos detractores. Para sus cr\u00edticos, Brodsky se mueve peligrosamente sobre la l\u00ednea que separa el activismo de la instrumentalizaci\u00f3n de las luchas sociales; un rasgo que podr\u00eda haberse intensificado en los \u00faltimos a\u00f1os: el artista ha dejado de recurrir a fotograf\u00edas de archivo para incorporar un registro en \u201ctiempo real\u201d de los estallidos sociales de la regi\u00f3n. Ah\u00ed est\u00e1n, por ejemplo, la serie dedicada al Paro Nacional de Colombia, en 2019, y el trabajo <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jornadas de noviembre<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, que produjo a cuatro manos con Fernando Bryce (Lima, 1965). Esta \u00faltima documenta la gran manifestaci\u00f3n ocurrida por la destituci\u00f3n del presidente peruano Mart\u00edn Vizcarra, y su reemplazo por Manuel Merino a fines de 2020. Y en los \u00faltimos dos a\u00f1os, Fernando Bryce se ha convertido en un compa\u00f1ero de ruta crucial para las nuevas aspiraciones del creador argentino. Considerado como uno de los artistas peruanos m\u00e1s importantes de la actualidad, Bryce ha producido desde fines de los noventa una obra extensa que se inspira, como la de Brodsky, en im\u00e1genes de archivo. Sus dibujos de tinta china reproducen con detalle portadas de revistas, afiches, dise\u00f1os publicitarios y de propaganda, con el fin de construir nuevas formas de representar la memoria hist\u00f3rica.&nbsp;<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">La afinidad entre ambos, si bien no es t\u00e9cnica, es evidente en el plano de las ideas. Adem\u00e1s, Bryce tambi\u00e9n ha sido el foco de alguna controversia: cuando en 2012 present\u00f3 la muestra \u201cDibujando la historia moderna\u201d en el Museo de Arte de Lima, Fernando de Szyszlo le dedic\u00f3 varias cr\u00edticas lapidarias. Para el pintor modernista \u2014cuyo gusto ha influido decisivamente en un sector del coleccionismo peruano\u2014, la pr\u00e1ctica de Bryce, sencillamente, no es arte. El dibujante ha seguido produciendo, imperturbable, una obra que parece dispuesta a canibalizar la historia universal. En sus manos, el registro de los acontecimientos se transforma en un dispositivo enigm\u00e1tico, donde m\u00faltiples miradas aparecen ingeniosamente superpuestas \u2014el dibujo es una interpretaci\u00f3n de la imagen fotogr\u00e1fica, que a su vez es una interpretaci\u00f3n de la realidad\u2014 y donde la iron\u00eda tiende a colarse entre gestos disciplinados y minuciosos.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Marcelo Brodsky y Fernando Bryce acaban de compartir una residencia en el Espacio 23 de Miami, donde crearon la pieza <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Territorios<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, que denuncia la matanza de activistas latinoamericanos que luchan por la justicia social y la preservaci\u00f3n del medioambiente. Bryce nos recibi\u00f3 en su taller en Lima, donde pudimos conectarnos con Brodsky v\u00eda Zoom. Esta conversaci\u00f3n registra un momento de transici\u00f3n en la obra de ambos artistas: un proceso intensificado por la experiencia del trabajo colaborativo.<\/span>\n\n<b>\u00bfC\u00f3mo surge esta colaboraci\u00f3n?<\/b>\n\n<b>Marcelo:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Fernando y yo hemos coincidido en varias bienales y exposiciones en los \u00faltimos quince a\u00f1os. La \u00faltima fue una muestra que hice en la galer\u00eda Henrique Far\u00eda de Nueva York, en 2020. Poco despu\u00e9s, Vizcarra fue destituido por el Congreso peruano, que puso en su lugar a Merino, y sali\u00f3 la gente a las calles en plena pandemia. En ese momento yo estaba siguiendo el Paro Nacional en Colombia. Al igual que Fernando, he trabajado principalmente con materiales hist\u00f3ricos. Tal vez fue el encierro lo que me llev\u00f3 a abordar el presente, no lo s\u00e9. Tal vez porque ya no pod\u00eda disfrutar de las calles y s\u00f3lo pod\u00eda verlas en fotos. Cuando me enter\u00e9 de lo que pas\u00f3 en Per\u00fa, empec\u00e9 a hablar por tel\u00e9fono con Fernando, porque \u00e9l es un comentarista muy agudo de la realidad. Despu\u00e9s vino el asesinato de Inti Sotelo y Bryan Pintado, y cay\u00f3 Merino. Decid\u00ed entonces hacer un trabajo sobre esas manifestaciones en la Plaza San Mart\u00edn. Escog\u00ed cinco im\u00e1genes de distintos fot\u00f3grafos de la Agencia Efe, que rent\u00e9, e invit\u00e9 a Fernando a trabajar conmigo. El trabajo con im\u00e1genes contempor\u00e1neas es algo que yo solo hab\u00eda experimentado a inicios de mi trabajo, en una serie muy puntual, cuando me encontraba afinando mis m\u00e9todos. Desde entonces he trabajado b\u00e1sicamente sobre temas hist\u00f3ricos. Abordar la actualidad fue un desaf\u00edo interesante para replantearme el trabajo. Los dibujos los pude hacer reci\u00e9n este a\u00f1o y ha sido en Miami, en la residencia que compart\u00ed con Marcelo, que hemos podido finalmente reunir las piezas de la serie<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Jornadas de noviembre.<\/span><\/i>\n\n<b>\u00bfC\u00f3mo pasaron de <\/b><b><i>Jornadas de noviembre<\/i><\/b><b> a <\/b><b><i>Territorios<\/i><\/b><b>?<\/b>\n\n<b>Marcelo: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Todo empez\u00f3 porque Jorge P\u00e9rez, propietario de la colecci\u00f3n del Espacio 23, pas\u00f3 por el Met, donde est\u00e1 mi obra <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">La clase<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Me escribi\u00f3 para vernos, pero luego lleg\u00f3 la pandemia y fue imposible. Entonces me volvi\u00f3 a escribir hace poco y me propuso hacer la residencia en su local. Yo acept\u00e9, pero le propuse a su equipo una idea diferente: quer\u00eda seguir trabajando con Fernando. \u00ab\u00bfFernando Bryce?\u00bb, me preguntaron. \u00abS\u00ed, c\u00f3mo no\u00bb. Nos organizamos para coincidir el mes de junio, y llegamos con la idea de trabajar sobre Ucrania.<\/span>\n\n<b>Fernando:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Ese tema nos interesaba por varias razones. Es un tema de actualidad, pero adem\u00e1s es un conflicto regional que tiene efectos globales. Por otro lado, Marcelo tiene or\u00edgenes ucranianos y a m\u00ed me interesa la historia pol\u00edtica y la geopol\u00edtica. Entonces llegamos a Miami, compramos libros sobre la historia de la guerra, sobre el arte y la guerra, pero all\u00e1 todo cambi\u00f3. Habl\u00e1bamos todo el tiempo en castellano, en la galer\u00eda, en las calles, el equipo de la galer\u00eda habla castellano, hab\u00eda un restaurante peruano al lado. Entonces dijimos: \u00bfpor qu\u00e9 no hacemos algo sobre Am\u00e9rica Latina? Pensando en las relaciones entre Ucrania y nuestra propia experiencia, empezamos a hablar sobre el desmembramiento de los territorios, el fraccionamiento de las ideolog\u00edas, la crisis de las certezas. Esa palabra, \u00abdesmembramiento\u00bb, que mencion\u00f3 Marcelo, nos trajo la imagen de T\u00fapac Amaru, que nos interes\u00f3 no s\u00f3lo como un l\u00edder anticolonial hist\u00f3rico en Am\u00e9rica Latina, sino como un s\u00edmbolo para una situaci\u00f3n mundial. Luego, cuando empezamos a investigar sobre temas ecol\u00f3gicos, Fernando encontr\u00f3 una foto impresionante de la destrucci\u00f3n de la selva de Madre de Dios que tambi\u00e9n era de Abd. Entonces le pedimos que nos mande otras im\u00e1genes de esa zona, de la devastaci\u00f3n de la miner\u00eda ilegal y de la destrucci\u00f3n de la selva para hacer explotaciones agr\u00edcolas o ganaderas. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gatopardo.com\/reportajes\/mineria-ilegal-en-madre-de-dios-peru-catastrofe-medioambiental-rodrigo-abd\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">La serie que nos mand\u00f3 Abd<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> combina la cobertura habitual del fot\u00f3grafo con su c\u00e1mara, y el drone. La fotograf\u00eda period\u00edstica con drone es reciente; pero que un fot\u00f3grafo de prensa salga con su drone, es m\u00e1s reciente a\u00fan. Estamos hablando de im\u00e1genes muy modernas. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">En ese momento, el 7 de junio, sale en la primera plana de El Pa\u00eds que ha sido asesinada <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/elpais.com\/america-colombia\/2022-06-09\/el-choco-se-queda-huerfano-con-el-asesinato-de-jesusita-moreno-la-lideresa-social-mas-querida-del-rio-san-juan.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jesusita Moreno<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, dirigente de la regi\u00f3n del Choc\u00f3 en el Pac\u00edfico colombiano. Jesusita dirig\u00eda una organizaci\u00f3n que promov\u00eda la titulaci\u00f3n colectiva de las tierras de comunidades afrodescendientes del r\u00edo San Juan. Es una regi\u00f3n en la que cohabitan los afrocolombianos, los pueblos ind\u00edgenas y los grupos narcos, una zona en disputa. A ra\u00edz de su asesinato decidimos decir algo sobre la gente a la que est\u00e1n matando por defender la naturaleza, porque ellos son la expresi\u00f3n cabal de lo que cuesta esa lucha en Per\u00fa, en Venezuela, en Colombia o en Brasil. As\u00ed que empezamos a buscar otros dirigentes. Hay nueve pa\u00edses representados. Hemos incluido a un dirigente hist\u00f3rico brasile\u00f1o, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/elpais.com\/planeta-futuro\/2020-10-25\/el-legado-del-activista-medioambiental-que-sigue-resonando-32-anos-despues-de-su-asesinato.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Chico Mendes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Una frase suya aparece en la obra: \u00abLa ecolog\u00eda sin lucha social es s\u00f3lo jardiner\u00eda\u00bb. Entonces ya ten\u00edamos a T\u00fapac Amaru, ten\u00edamos las im\u00e1genes de la devastaci\u00f3n ecol\u00f3gica \u2014que incluye la miner\u00eda ilegal, pero tambi\u00e9n est\u00e1 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/elpais.com\/internacional\/2022-02-14\/la-onu-estima-que-los-danos-por-el-derrame-de-crudo-afectaran-al-menos-seis-anos-a-la-costa-de-peru.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">el desastre de Repsol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, en Per\u00fa\u2014, ten\u00edamos la idea de los l\u00edderes sociales. Empezamos a buscar im\u00e1genes del desmembramiento de T\u00fapac Amaru. Eso ten\u00eda que ser central.<\/span>\n\n<b>Marcelo: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Y alrededor de esa figura fuimos poniendo los paisajes. Mientras, Fernando iba haciendo el primer dibujo que es un calco a l\u00e1piz de los retratos que despu\u00e9s har\u00eda con tinta y sombreado. La dificultad consist\u00eda en escoger a los activistas asesinados, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalwitness.org\/es\/last-line-defence-es\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">porque son miles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Hablamos con una amiga m\u00eda que dirige una organizaci\u00f3n en Washington que se llama CEJIL, y que presenta los casos de violaciones de derechos humanos en Am\u00e9rica Latina ante la Comisi\u00f3n Interamericana de Derechos Humanos. Ella vino a vernos a Miami y nos ayud\u00f3. Nos sugiri\u00f3 el nombre de la mexicana <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/mundo\/noticias-america-latina-54558317\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Marisela Escobedo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, de la guatemalteca <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.prensalibre.com\/hemeroteca\/myrna-mack-brillante-y-humana\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Myrna Mack Chang<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, del comandante sandinista <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/elpais.com\/internacional\/2022-02-12\/fallece-en-una-carcel-de-nicaragua-el-historico-comandante-sandinista-hugo-torres-preso-por-el-regimen-de-ortega.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hugo Torres<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, y con ella completamos el conjunto de retratos. Pero adem\u00e1s ella es la abogada de <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/mundo\/noticias-america-latina-61881524\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Berta C\u00e1ceres<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, que dedic\u00f3 su vida a la defensa del pueblo Lenca, en Honduras, y que tambi\u00e9n aparece en la obra.<\/span>\n\n<b>Fernando: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">De esa forma ampliamos la selecci\u00f3n para incluir a l\u00edderes sociales relacionados con la defensa de los derechos humanos y v\u00edctimas de la violencia estatal. Est\u00e1 el argentino Jorge Julio L\u00f3pez, que fue asesinado despu\u00e9s de declarar contra un torturador que recibi\u00f3 una cadena perpetua y que <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.perfil.com\/noticias\/sociedad\/miguel-etchecolatz-se-llevo-el-secreto-de-jorge-julio-lopez-a-la-tumba.phtml\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">muri\u00f3 hace unos d\u00edas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. En realidad, muchas de las cosas de las que hablamos en <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Territorios<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> han ocurrido hace muy poco. Pr\u00e1cticamente un d\u00eda antes de que empez\u00e1ramos la obra.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><\/span>\n<h3><b>Marcelo:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Adem\u00e1s sucedi\u00f3 algo incre\u00edble. La organizaci\u00f3n Norwegian Human Rights Fund, que me hab\u00eda financiado un proyecto en Bergen hac\u00eda dos meses, tiene una oficina para proteger a dirigentes sociales en Colombia. En el momento en que se produce el asesinato, los llamo y les pido que me pongan en contacto con la organizaci\u00f3n de Jesusita. As\u00ed llegamos a hablar con los hijos. Dos d\u00edas despu\u00e9s, los hijos nos llaman pidi\u00e9ndonos ayuda para salir de Colombia. Estaban aterrados, acababan de matar a su madre y no sab\u00edan a qui\u00e9n acudir. Aqu\u00ed pasamos de la obra a otro terreno. Est\u00e1bamos completamente desesperados, no sab\u00edamos qu\u00e9 hacer para ayudarlos. Llamamos a la organizaci\u00f3n noruega y a Amnist\u00eda Internacional, pero era imposible. Finalmente llam\u00e9 a mi amiga de Washington, le cont\u00e9 la situaci\u00f3n. Pero tambi\u00e9n hay im\u00e1genes que es necesario interpretar desde el arte, porque tienen un poder simb\u00f3lico que es ineludible. Finalmente estamos narrando. Ese es un tema que nos preocupa por razones \u00e9ticas. Sin embargo, la pregunta por la estetizaci\u00f3n de la violencia no me parece muy pertinente en el sentido de que siempre se han reportado los hechos de la historia o de la actualidad con los medios que hab\u00eda en el momento: con la fotograf\u00eda, el dibujo, la pintura o lo que fuere. No podemos invalidar una pr\u00e1ctica art\u00edstica porque est\u00e9 usando un medio determinado. Ahora, que no sea el medio adecuado para lo que uno en verdad quer\u00eda decir, eso es otra cosa, pero yo no veo que esteticemos nada. Hay una est\u00e9tica, por supuesto, pero toda manifestaci\u00f3n pl\u00e1stica tiene una est\u00e9tica. Tambi\u00e9n la pol\u00edtica tiene una est\u00e9tica.<\/span>\n\n<b>Marcelo:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Es una vieja discusi\u00f3n sobre la representaci\u00f3n del genocidio, que es una de las discusiones troncales del arte de los siglos XX y XXI. Me refiero a los textos de Celan, de Foucault, de Georges Didi-Huberman sobre el Holocausto. En <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Im\u00e1genes pese a todo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Didi-Huberman habla de tres im\u00e1genes de la resistencia polaca que ilustran las c\u00e1maras de gas. Pese a todas las discusiones que ha habido sobre el tema, esas im\u00e1genes prueban algo que no prueba ninguna otra cosa de la misma manera. Yo acabo de hacer un trabajo sobre un genocido alem\u00e1n en Namibia con unas im\u00e1genes dur\u00edsimas. Hablar de un genocidio no es joda. El color en esa serie es m\u00e1s suave, las obras son m\u00e1s chicas, pero cuando t\u00fa ves eso, entiendes lo que pas\u00f3. Y no hay otra forma de contarlo, porque si escribes un texto, nadie lo lee. Las im\u00e1genes te permiten narrar el acontecimiento, y la t\u00e9cnica de intervenir las fotos con color intensifica el impacto, genera un lazo emocional con el que ve. Eso es lo que me interesa.<\/span>\n\n<b>Fernando:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> La imagen, por su naturaleza tan peculiar, tan poco literal, crea un impacto distinto al texto escrito. Ah\u00ed tambi\u00e9n vienen los cuestionamientos. Marcelo acaba de citar un caso extremo de fotograf\u00edas testimoniales que salieron de campos de concentraci\u00f3n, pero tambi\u00e9n est\u00e1n los trabajos hechos desde una situaci\u00f3n mucho m\u00e1s c\u00f3moda, de artistas que desde su mesa de trabajo reportan o reflexionan sobre lo que est\u00e1 pasando en el mundo. Esa es una pr\u00e1ctica que se remonta a Goya, que vivi\u00f3 de lejos la invasi\u00f3n napole\u00f3nica a Espa\u00f1a, y desde su c\u00f3modo sill\u00f3n hizo los dibujos que todos conocemos. Es un testimonio, pero no directo, que inaugura una tradici\u00f3n de reflexi\u00f3n sobre el mundo y sobre lo que est\u00e1 ocurriendo, que es propiamente moderna.<\/span>\n\n<b>Marcelo: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Algo parecido ocurre con el Guernica de Picasso. \u00c9l est\u00e1 hablando de los muertos de su pueblo. Nosotros hablamos de los nuestros. Porque la verdad es que Fernando y yo somos absolutamente latinoamericanos.
