In a scene from Alfazema<\/em>, the latest short film directed by Brazilian Sabrina Fidalgo, a black woman with braided hair appears after an interference, smoking marijuana in a pipe. She has earrings of rhinestones and pearls and jewelry in her hair. She is impatient and annoyed. They ask her who she is, and after clarifying that she is the creator of everything, she says: “Eu sou a dona da porra toda”<\/em>. It’s God, or is it that God can’t be a black woman who wants to go to the Carnival in peace?<\/p>\n

Alfazema<\/em> (2019) and Rainha<\/em> (2016) are two short films that are part of a trilogy about Carnival. Sabrina Fidalgo is a black Carioca filmmaker who wants to tell stories related to the Carnival in Rio de Janeiro with these two pieces and Karnaval<\/em>, a feature film project in development.<\/p>\n

Sabrina says that cinema can change imaginaries and that, perhaps in this way, it can contribute to the fight against racism. In any case, she is doing just that. Sabrina has been a film fanatic since childhood, trained as an actress with her parents, founders of the Teatro Profesional del Negro (T.E.P.R.O.N). She studied in Germany, directed several plays, and founded a film production company called Fidalgo Produ\u00e7\u00f5es.<\/p>\n

The main characters in Rainha<\/em> and Alfazema<\/em> are black women. Do you have a particular interest in telling stories about black women?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Before, I did some plays with white protagonists and actors. I also did Black Berlim, where I worked with black actors in Germany, where the protagonist is black, and there is a black antagonist. I played that role. It’s not a straitjacket. But it is a desire that I have, evident in my work, to bring other faces of Brazil to be protagonists in the cinema. I am referring to black, mestizo, indigenous, and not only white people, which are the most common in Brazilian cinema.<\/p>\n

How typical is it to have black female directors and actresses in Brazilian cinema?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Brazilian cinema is a white, macho, and elitist cinema. The first black woman to direct a feature film was Adela Sampaio, in 1984 with Cursed Love. After her, it took many years for other black women directors to arrive, like me. It is not very common, but since my generation, new black women directors are appearing who are directing short films, and some of them are also directing feature films.<\/p>\n

They do not have the same infrastructure to make their films as white directors. You can see, for example, that it takes a long time between one film and another that they make, and there are still many difficulties in making feature films. In other words, there is still a lot of injustice in the market regarding budget distribution, sponsorship, and support for black female and male directors to make their films.<\/p>\n

What do you think about the issue of representativeness in your films?<\/strong><\/p>\n

It’s a central theme for me because I grew up watching Brazilian cinema in which I didn’t see myself. I didn’t see people like me, and when I saw them, they were always playing ridiculed stereotypical roles. The men are hypersexualized; the women are prostitutes or maids. And I was left wondering why you only see poverty, scarcity, and lack when it comes to black people on the screens.<\/p>\n

I grew up with that. I come from a very militant family. My parents were the founders of Teatro Profissional do Negro; there was always a lot of discussion about that in my house. That experience made me grow the desire to change that paradigm and make black faces, mestizos like the ones I see daily in the streets. Of course, I am interested in a protagonism with dignity that does not reproduce those stereotypes.<\/p>\n

When a large part of the population is erased in the cinematography of a country, it seems to me that you want to say something. For me, it is a white supremacist plan, an interest in being European and Caucasian, in erasing that racial identity that is, I repeat, the majority of our country. In that sense, for me, Brazilian cinema is very problematic because it reproduces a radical racist idea of whitening.<\/p>\n

So, do you think cinema can help in the fight against racism?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Indeed, films are potent weapons; they work with fantasy and play, but they also speak to reality. If you constantly watch movies and see a series of images, you start to believe in them and take those images to places in your life. So you begin to think that some things are possible and some things are not possible.<\/p>\n

Cinema is very powerful. Maybe it can’t end racism sometimes, I don’t think it will ever end, but it can help in building an equal society. Suppose a white Brazilian girl grows up watching movies where no black people exist. In that case, only successful white people reproduce the ideals of beauty. When she grows up, she will think that everything that is not white is not beautiful, exciting, or consequential. She will end up reproducing the racism she learned watching movies throughout her life.<\/p>\n

Cinema is the construction of imaginaries. In the 1920s, the United States was going through an economic crisis, in an interwar period, suffering from Prohibition, and this Hollywood machine sold completely different imaginaries. Exactly, who says that God doesn’t like Carnival or that he doesn’t like sex? That is a very Eurocentric, very Judeo-Christian idea of sin and guilt. That form of colonization put an end to many things. If we look at the native peoples or the descendants of Africans, they see the spirituality of God in very different ways. For them, God can be nature, a force, a divinity that dances, that like sex, or that likes to eat. When I thought of that character, I felt a lot about that: God is a black woman who wants to go to Carnival. Because if Carnival brings people happiness, it is a God thing.<\/p>\n

Sabrina Fidalgo es una cineasta negra carioca que quiere, con estas dos piezas y Karnaval un proyecto de largometraje que est\u00e1 en desarrollo, contar historias relacionadas con el carnaval de R\u00edo de Janeiro. <\/span>\n\nSabrina dice que el cine puede cambiar imaginarios y que tal vez as\u00ed pueda aportar en la lucha contra el racismo. En todo caso ella lo est\u00e1 haciendo. Tambi\u00e9n hice Black Berlim en el que trabaj\u00e9 con actores negros en Alemania, ah\u00ed el protagonista es negro y hay una antagonista negra, yo hice ese papel. No es una camisa de fuerza. Pero s\u00ed es un deseo que tengo y que es evidente en mi obra, de llevar otras caras de Brasil a ser protagonistas en el cine. Me refiero a personas negras, mestizas, ind\u00edgenas y no solo blancas, que es lo m\u00e1s com\u00fan en el cine brasile\u00f1o. <\/span>\n\n\u00bfQu\u00e9 tan com\u00fan es en el cine brasile\u00f1o que haya directoras y actrices negras?<\/b>\n\nEl cine brasile\u00f1o est\u00e1 muy marcado por ser un cine muy blanco, machista y elitista. La primera mujer negra en dirigir un largometraje de ficci\u00f3n fue Adela Sampaio, en 1984 con <\/span>Amor maldito<\/span><\/i>. Despu\u00e9s de ella, pasaron muchos a\u00f1os para que llegaramos otras directoras negras, como yo, por ejemplo. No es algo muy com\u00fan, pero a partir de mi generaci\u00f3n est\u00e1n apareciendo nuevas directoras negras que est\u00e1n dirigiendo cortos y ya algunas tambi\u00e9n largometrajes. <\/span>\n\nClaramente, ellas no tienen la misma infraestructura para hacer sus filmes que tienen las y los directores blancos. Se puede ver, por ejemplo, que entre una pel\u00edcula y otra que ellas realizan pasa un tiempo largo, a\u00fan hay muchas dificultades para hacer largometrajes. Es decir, todav\u00eda hay mucha injusticia en el mercado en relaci\u00f3n con  la distribuci\u00f3n de presupuesto, patrocinio y apoyo para que los y las directoras negras hagan sus pel\u00edculas. <\/span>\n\n\u00bfC\u00f3mo piensas el tema de la representatividad en tus pel\u00edculas?<\/b>\n\nEs un tema muy importante para m\u00ed porque crec\u00ed viendo un cine brasile\u00f1o en el que no me ve\u00eda. Yo no vi personas como yo, y cuando las ve\u00eda esas personas siempre estaban representando papeles ridiculizados, estereotipados. Los hombres, hipersexualizados; las mujeres, prostitutas o empleadas dom\u00e9sticas. Y yo me quedaba pensando en por qu\u00e9 en las pantallas solo se ve la pobreza, la escacez, la falta, cuando se trata de personas negras.<\/span>\n\nYo crec\u00ed con eso, vengo de una familia muy militante. Mis pap\u00e1s fueron los fundadores del Teatro Profissional do Negro, entonces en mi casa siempres se discutii\u00f3 mucho eso. Claramente esa experiencia hizo crecer en m\u00ed el deseo de cambiar ese paradigma, y hacer protag\u00f3nicas caras negras, mestizas, como las que veo todos los d\u00edas en las calles. Por supuesto, me interesa un protagonismo con dignidad que no reproduzca esos estereotipos.<\/span>\n\nCuando se borra una gran parte de la poblaci\u00f3n en la cinematograf\u00eda de un pa\u00eds, me parece que se quiere decir algo, \u00bfno? Para m\u00ed se trata de un plan de supremac\u00eda blanca, de un inter\u00e9s por ser europeo y cauc\u00e1sico, de borrar esa identidad racial que es, repito, la mayor\u00eda de nuestro pa\u00eds. En ese sentido, para m\u00ed el cine brasile\u00f1o es muy problem\u00e1tico, porque, de hecho, reproduce una idea racista extrema de El cine es un arma muy poderosa, el cine trabaja con la fantas\u00eda y el juego, pero tambi\u00e9n habla de la realidad. Si constantemente ves pel\u00edculas y ves una serie de im\u00e1genes, empiezas a creer en ellas y terminas llevando esas im\u00e1genes a lugares de tu vida. As\u00ed empiezas a creer que hay algunas cosas que son posibles y otras que no lo son. <\/span>\n\nEl cine es muy poderoso, tal vez no pueda acabar con el racismo, a veces creo que nunca va a acabar, pero puede ayudar en la construcci\u00f3n de una sociedad m\u00e1s igualitaria. Si una ni\u00f1a blanca brasile\u00f1a crece viendo pel\u00edculas en las que no existen personas negras, solo existen personas blancas exitosas que reproducen los ideales de belleza, cuando crezca esa ni\u00f1a va a pensar que todo lo que no es blanco no es bonito, interesante o poderoso. Ella va a terminar reproduciendo el racismo que aprendi\u00f3 viendo pel\u00edculas a lo largo de su vida.<\/span>\n\nEl cine es construcci\u00f3n de  imaginarios. En la d\u00e9cada de 1920, Estados Unidos estaba pasando por una crisis econ\u00f3mica, en un periodo de entreguerras, sufriendo la Ley seca, y exist\u00eda esa m\u00e1quina de Hollywood vendiendo imaginarios completamente diferentes. Ese pa\u00eds termin\u00f3 convirti\u00e9ndose en eso que imagin\u00f3 en un momento de su historia: una potencia, un pa\u00eds de riqueza y de hero\u00edsmo. Entonces s\u00ed, el cine con su poder de construcci\u00f3n de imaginarios puede ayudar a transformar una sociedad. <\/span>\n\nEn <\/b>Alfazema<\/i><\/b> aparece Dios y resulta que es una mujer negra. \u00bfEsa ser\u00eda una forma de cambiar imaginarios?<\/b>\n\nClaro. En ese caso est\u00e1bamos haciendo una cr\u00edtica al cristianismo, ese modelo cat\u00f3lico que fue importado para las Am\u00e9ricas. Cuando vemos im\u00e1genes que retratan a Dios, siembre vemos un hombre blanco, viejo y barbudo. Esa es una idea muy eurocentrada, muy judeo cristiana de pecado y culpa. Esa forma de colonizaci\u00f3n acab\u00f3 con muchas cosas. Si vamos ver los pueblos originarios o los descendientes de africanos, ven la espiritualidad de dios de maneras muy diferentes, para ellos Dios puede ser la naturaleza,  una fuerza, una divinidad que danza, que le gusta el sexo o que le gusta comer. Cuando pens\u00e9 en ese personaje, pens\u00e9 mucho en eso: que Dios es una mujer negra que quiere ir al Carnaval.
