Maya Goded is one of Mexico’s most renowned photographers. After more than 30 years of career, she recognizes that hers is a personal and political path traversed by two major themes: women, especially the violence that surrounds them, and healing at the hands of witches, healers, and wise women. For her, each of her projects is also a journey of self-knowledge.<\/p>\n

“I liked the woman I am.” That was what one of the sex workers with whom Mexican photographer Maya Goded has been working in the La Merced neighborhood for the past three decades said. She said it after watching Plaza de la Soledad<\/em>, the documentary film product of all those years of effort. Before watching it, she – a trans woman who had participated in the filming with her partner, another sex worker – was apprehensive, almost aggressive. She was afraid to see herself, a sociologist friend explained to Maya. But the result thrilled her: she had not seen herself that way before. She had only seen her partners.<\/p>\n

After watching the documentary with each of the participants separately, Maya made a screening for all of them and invited their families. Maya’s father, son of Spaniards, a communist party militant persecuted for his militancy, was very moved by everything he saw and decided to give a speech. Maya says it was a bit long, but he said something that marks this work and others he has done: “Today I met my daughter’s other family.”<\/p>\n

When Maya Goded talks about her journey as a photographer, there is a recurring theme: the feeling of having had to fulfill a social and family mandate: to continue the struggles of her ancestors. She descends from a family of Spanish exiles, leftist militants, and women who decided to leave their places of origin, fleeing from various forms of violence. Along with this idea, she is sure about letting go of the mandate that tells that her place is with those who fight. The truth is that even so, Maya found her own political space: women, the violence that surrounds them, but also their wisdom and power.<\/p>\n

Although she had done other works before, when she looks back, she finds the beginning of her path as an author when she made Tierra Negra.<\/em> In the early 1990s, she traveled to Costa Chica in Guerrero. Her interest in the place was born from the stories she heard at her father’s and grandparents’ house when they told the adventures of Uncle Antolin.<\/p>\n

Although it was a well-known and intervened place, few photographers and researchers had been interested in the population now recognized as Afro-Mexican. When Goded showed her photos, people in town thought she had taken them in another country, perhaps Cuba. However, what she discovered were the women. There she began a path that marks the rest of her work: women, violence, magic, and healing.<\/p>\n

In Tierra negra<\/em>, Maya begins to explore these themes with a perspective that characterizes her work: closeness and intimacy. On the coast, Maya discovered that these women lived their sexuality in other ways, very different from hers. Despite certain freedoms, at the same time, they experienced pressures that the photographer had never felt before: the imminence of sexual violence, the anxiety for virginity, and for occupying a particular place once they began their sexual lives. Otherwise, a woman who was not a virgin at marriage would be expelled from the village, and, in many cases, her only destiny would be prostitution in neighboring places.<\/p>\n

Maya has never shown the prostitution photos she took in that first project.<\/p>\n

But later, that was a central theme, although it took time to understand why. The biggest project in this regard was the photobook Plaza de la Soledad<\/em>, published in 2006, and the documentary released ten years later. That work, in the square and the neighborhood of La Merced, involved 20 years of research, friendship, trust, portraits, and photographs of the women who work as sex workers there. In that case, she also found a world crossed by violence.<\/p>\n

Pursuing this interest led her down painful and difficult paths. Portraying the effects of this violence-filled her with fear. The same fear that led her, in search of her healing, to rediscover the other route of her path: magic and witchcraft. Undoubtedly, photography for Maya is, above all, a personal path. One in which desires and intuitions are the guides. And in which you build meanings with time and reflection.<\/p>\n

How did your relationship with photography begin?<\/strong><\/p>\n

My relationship with the visual began when I was a child. I had language problems, and I found painting a way to express myself. That was my forte and not words. Also, I wanted to do something social since I was little, mainly because that was what my father and uncles did. They were always involved in political issues. I kept hearing stories about my uncle, who was linked to the peasants and was in the mountains, and then guerrillas came from Central America and stayed at my house. So, I heard a lot of things, and I wanted to know more. I wanted to see what everyone was talking about in my house.<\/p>\n

When I grew up, I studied sociology, but I also got into art and put together a collage between photography and sociology, something that didn’t yet exist in Mexico. Then, my first impulse was to go to this area where my adventurous great-uncle had died: to the mountains of Guerrero. My dad talked a lot about it, and I had this idea that I didn’t hear well and wasn’t sure of what I was hearing because my mom told me not to tell my school what I heard at home. The children at my school lived a different reality. So I always doubted whether what I heard was true.<\/p>\n

For me, to go and take a picture was to create evidence. I no longer believe in evidence, but that’s how I started. I wanted to be close because I needed to understand what my father and uncles were saying and doing. And because I acquired a commitment with them, I am now shaking off.<\/p>\n

So you went to Guerrero in search of your uncle’s stories. What did you find?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I arrived there 30 years ago. It was strange for a woman like me, a blonde, to be walking around, just a prostitutes. And besides, women were robbed a lot. There was a lot of violence against women. I stayed in a house and slept with the lady in her bed, and she took care of me because she didn’t want her children to hurt me or anything to happen. I always tried to talk in the villages with the municipal president and with all the men. I would tell them what I was doing there to understand.<\/p>\n

It was as if I had become the town’s photographer. They would call me, for example, when someone died. That’s when I learned to relate to people through photos. I learned to play with people to take portraits. It was hilarious. Women had a sexuality that I didn’t, so I played a lot with that in many portraits.<\/p>\n

Violence was always present; to go from one town to another, we would go in groups of women, but they all carried a knife. I felt very good with the women, and suddenly, I started to work on prostitution. I have a lot of photos of prostitution from there, which I never took. I was impressed that if a woman was not a virgin, she was automatically out of the community. And they had no choice but to go to the next town to prostitute themselves.<\/p>\n

When I showed my photos, everyone first thought it was Cuba, not Mexico. That’s how ignorant they were. Now I believe there is a much bigger opening, but before, not at all. When I see the photos, I say wow, I haven’t changed. I found myself with the same images I have pursued all my life. I’ve changed areas, but it’s still the same. I somehow follow the paths of my family and what my life as a girl has meant.<\/p>\n

This is part of Tierra Negra<\/em>, a project that became a book. At the beginning of your career, you feel that this is where the themes that have attracted you to this day began.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Photography is such a personal path. I have always chosen themes; One thing leads me to another because that’s my thoughts. It’s what I’m living at the moment. So it is personal, and it is very solitary. I take care of it like a treasure. In my case, the subject came and moved me; it was not something I felt obliged to talk about. Somehow, my way of working is linked to intuition.<\/p>\n

I mean, it’s not just my uncle who went to the Costa Chica, I want to go there. No. It started as a desire, and I began understanding the meanings. That’s the most beautiful thing about the photo: when suddenly you’ve been there for a few years, you look back and realize that everything has coherence and speaks to you about yourself. In that sense, the photo is a privilege.<\/p>\n

This reflection awoke recently; when Claudi Carreras did the exhibition of African Americans and asked me to review Tierra Negra<\/em>. I didn’t want to. But when I did it, I realized how far I had come.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

A while ago, you said that you started working with women and healing in that first project. Why did you become interested in those themes?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Everything went at its own pace, that is, it wasn’t that at the beginning I said: I’m going to do prostitution, then healing. It was very intuitive. I am not rational, my projects come out of things that one is not so conscious of, and then they make sense.<\/p>\n

I also learned from the first years of photography that if you go with a very fixed idea, you don’t let life come to you. If you go to check your theories, there is something that doesn’t arrive. The most beautiful thing is that life surprises you, and the construction is in that moment. And from where you are, you discover it.<\/p>\n

The most remarkable thing about the photo is what you thought was falling apart. If it doesn’t go through the body, what’s the point? I mean, I can take a feminist theory, a bitch, and of course, I can go out and visually make everything fit together and it’s perfect. For me, that doesn’t make sense. It has to go through my body and allow me a confrontation with feminist theory, with what I thought, my own way of being, and my own patriarchy.<\/p>\n

Why so much interest in prostitution?<\/strong><\/p>\n

It took me a long time to realize it, and it was apparent why it was there. That is, it means many things of violence, but it was also a questioning of powerful things that the women in my family have lived through. In the documentary I made in the Plaza de la Soledad about prostitution, I dedicate it to all the mothers…<\/p>\n

The prostitution thing was about questioning the good woman and the bad woman. My two grandmothers are different; one was judged by society because she was super sexual, and the other because she was a worker, her sexuality was erased. There were always these things. When I got pregnant, I said how awful. Now I have to play the role of the good mother, which meant a woman’s confinement. And I didn’t want to play it, and I wasn’t interested in that role. I was terrified of it.<\/p>\n

In your works about women, Tierra negra, Desaparecidas, Plaza de la Soledad<\/em>, there is a lot of intimacy and violence. How do you manage to deal with both themes?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Violence is in everything. So, they are affectionate, intimate but also violent relationships. That’s what I’ve learned, and even more so when they are relationships of such a long time. In La Merced, many years of work implied the complexity of relationships and trust. It has been interesting because one is involved in violence. I am with them in one of the documentary scenes, and we are laughing our heads off in the bedroom. They are a couple, a woman and a transvestite, they are sharing with me how in their intimate life, there is violence, and I am laughing with them. Then I see myself in the mirror where I am with the camera appearing in the documentary, saying I am also part of this. I am also here, laughing at the violence they share with me.<\/p>\n

Somehow you must think about how far you want to be part of it. I guess it happens to all photographers: there comes the point where you have to decide how far you want to be or how far you don’t want to be. And then the next one is: I took the photo, and I’m going to publish it, or I’m not going to post it.<\/p>\n

You experience violence and ethics daily. If you got into a violent zone because you want to understand violence, then you have to assume it.<\/p>\n

Your work has traveled along those two paths of women and healing. I think that can be seen in two pieces that, as far as I understand, are related: Desaparecidas<\/em> and Tierra de brujas<\/em>. How did that relationship come about?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Desaparecidas<\/em> didn’t come out of something, let’s say, personal, but out of these searches that you suddenly leave open. One day, I was told by human rights organization. A woman was killed in broad daylight on one of the busiest streets. I was going with human rights, and among the women, there was a man who said he was a client, winning us all over.<\/p>\n

I didn’t know well, but something was going on there. Later, in the streets, I discovered that the fantastic client was the pimp. When the girl’s body was on its way to the common grave, some people arrived and said that maybe it was his daughter and, yes, she was from the Sierra. They had changed her papers, her name. I was very shocked by that story.<\/p>\n

So I applied for a grant. I started photographing Desaparecidas<\/em> in 2004. In Ciudad Juarez, I fell in love with my partner, that is, there was a film festival, and we danced for about three days. That’s when I started to learn about the disappearances of women and when I investigated, I discovered that there were many things that I had already seen elsewhere. One point that interests me about prostitution is the violence against women, one of the most common mechanisms is the change of identity. They take away their roles and leave them alone. That is a critical point, and that’s how I connected with the issue of the “Desaparecidas.” It was the most painful issue because prostitution is also painful, but I was there from many perspectives, from workshops to the feminist movement. But disappearances come from another pain. I have a daughter.<\/p>\n

What made it so tricky emotionally?<\/strong><\/p>\n

It’s an issue that was very hard for me. It hurt me a lot. I come from a family that doesn’t believe there is justice; I come from disillusionment with politics. The women who have disappeared are a mockery, which is a terrible thing. Doing that work made me depressed; I no longer believed in the photo. Besides, I joined an agency, and all the pressure was taking away my taste for photography. At one time, my hands became paralyzed.<\/p>\n

In those days, I was invited to give a workshop in the desert, and they told me about a town famous for its witches. Look, this Mexico has changed, and fear gets into your body if you take a chance. I felt it did. So, there began a whole thing of healing and witchcraft. From there, I began to investigate and made Tierra de brujas, which has become an essential thing in my life, this search for healing wounds.<\/p>\n

That is to say, did you find the path to healing in witchcraft?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yes, there came the point when I didn’t want to see anything else from violence. I could not cope with so much. When my father died, I understood there was a commitment, and I felt I had to do something substantial socially. But suddenly, I didn’t want any more darkness, and that’s how I opened the walls and let some light in. So I started to look for curanderas, and now I am very involved in understanding that if we don’t change as individuals, how can we make a change?<\/p>\n

With that change, I went to the mountains of Oaxaca and learned a little bit with several healers. That is, it was a little bit about massages, plants, about different things. I decided to turn everything around because I take pictures and am also learning.<\/p>\n

Do you feel you managed to let go of fear in this healing process?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Fear is an exciting topic in my life. I’ve been afraid since I was a little girl and I’ve been looking for it. It hasn’t paralyzed me, but it’s more like a thing of going out and wanting to see it. I like to look at things head-on, even if I’m afraid, to see what’s going on and understand it. It’s part of everybody, although it gets into your body terribly. It’s easier to say that the bad is outside, but that’s the human being. In Ciudad Juarez, I saw that we all have that inside, and I was afraid of what we could become. What I like about the curanderas is that they know how to navigate in the midst of this. I think it’s part of life, and we have to see it and understand it, and that’s it.<\/p>\n

Eso fue lo que dijo una de las trabajadoras sexuales con quienes la fot\u00f3grafa mexicana Maya Goded ha venido trabajando en el barrio La Merced durante las \u00faltimas tres d\u00e9cadas. Lo dijo despu\u00e9s de ver <\/span>Plaza de la Soledad<\/span><\/i>, el documental producto de todos esos a\u00f1os de esfuerzo. Antes de verlo, ella \u2014una mujer trans que hab\u00eda participado en las grabaciones con su pareja, otra trabajadora sexual\u2014, estaba aprensiva, casi agresiva. Ten\u00eda miedo de verse, le explic\u00f3 una amiga soci\u00f3loga a Maya. Pero el resultado final la emocion\u00f3: ella no se hab\u00eda visto antes de esa manera, solo hab\u00eda visto a sus compa\u00f1eras.<\/span>\n\nDespu\u00e9s de mostrar el documental a cada una de las participantes por separado, Maya hizo una exhibici\u00f3n para todas e invitaron a sus familias. El pap\u00e1 de Maya, hijo de espa\u00f1oles, militante del partido comunista y perseguido por su militancia, result\u00f3 muy conmovido por todo lo que estaba viendo y decidi\u00f3 dar un discurso. Maya cuenta que fue un poco largo, pero \u00e9l dijo algo que marca ese trabajo y otros que ha hecho: \u201choy conoc\u00ed a la otra familia de mi cumplir con un mandato social y familiar: continuar las luchas de sus ancestros. Pues desciende de una familia de exiliados espa\u00f1oles, militantes de izquierda y de mujeres que decidieron dejar sus lugares de origen huyendo de diversas formas de violencia. Junto a esa idea, aparece la certeza de que ella est\u00e1 soltando ese mandato que le indica que su lugar en el mundo es junto a los que luchan. Lo cierto es que aun siendo as\u00ed, Maya encontr\u00f3 su propio espacio pol\u00edtico: las mujeres, la violencia que las rodea pero tambi\u00e9n su sabidur\u00eda y su poder. <\/span>\n\n \n\nAunque hab\u00eda hecho otros trabajos antes, cuando ve hacia atr\u00e1s, ella encuentra el inicio de su camino como autora cuando hizo <\/span>Tierra Negra. <\/span><\/i>A principios de los 90 viaj\u00f3 a la Costa Chica, en Guerrero. El inter\u00e9s por el lugar hab\u00eda nacido de las historias que escuch\u00f3 en casa de su padre y sus abuelos, cuando contaban las aventuras del t\u00edo Antol\u00edn. <\/span>\n\nAunque era un lugar conocido e intervenido, pocos fot\u00f3grafos e investigadores se hab\u00edan interesado por la poblaci\u00f3n que ahora se reconoce como afromexicana. Cuando Goded mostr\u00f3 sus fotos, la gente de la ciudad pens\u00f3 que las hab\u00eda hecho en otro pa\u00eds, quiz\u00e1 Cuba. Sin embargo, lo que ella descubri\u00f3 fue a las mujeres. Ah\u00ed inici\u00f3 un camino que marca el resto de su obra: las mujeres, la violencia, la magia, la sanaci\u00f3n. <\/span>\n\nEn <\/span>Tierra negra, <\/span><\/i>Maya empieza a explorar esos temas con una perspectiva que caracteriza sus trabajos: la cercan\u00eda y la intimidad. En la costa, Maya descubri\u00f3 que esas mujeres viv\u00edan de otras maneras su sexualidad, una muy diferente a la de ella. A pesar de ciertas libertades, al mismo tiempo ellas viv\u00edan presiones que la fot\u00f3grafa nunca hab\u00eda sentido: la inminencia de la violencia sexual, la presi\u00f3n por la virginidad y por ocupar un lugar muy espec\u00edfico una vez iniciaran su vida sexual. El proyecto m\u00e1s grande al respecto fue el fotolibro <\/span>Plaza de la Soledad<\/span><\/i>, publicado en 2006, y el documental que se estren\u00f3 10 a\u00f1os despu\u00e9s. Ese trabajo, en la plaza y en el barrio de La Merced, implic\u00f3 20 a\u00f1os de investigaci\u00f3n, amistad, confianza, retratos, fotograf\u00edas de las mujeres que ejercen como trabajadoras sexuales ah\u00ed. En ese caso, tambi\u00e9n encontr\u00f3 un mundo atravesado por la violencia.<\/span>\n\nSeguir ese inter\u00e9s la llev\u00f3 por caminos dolorosos y dif\u00edciles. Retratar los efectos de esas violencias la llenaron de miedo. El mismo que la llev\u00f3, en busca de su propia sanaci\u00f3n, a redescubrir la otra ruta de su camino: la magia y la brujer\u00eda. Sin duda, la fotograf\u00eda para Maya es ante todo un camino personal. Uno en el que los deseos y las intuiciones son los gu\u00edas. Y en el que, con tiempo y reflexi\u00f3n, se van construyendo los significados.<\/span>\n\n\u00bfC\u00f3mo empez\u00f3 tu relaci\u00f3n con la fotograf\u00eda?<\/b>\n\nMi relaci\u00f3n con lo visual empez\u00f3 desde chiquita. Tuve problemas de lenguaje, y encontr\u00e9 en la pintura una manera de expresarme. Mi fuerte era ese y no las palabras. Tambi\u00e9n desde peque\u00f1a pens\u00e9 que yo quer\u00eda hacer algo social, en gran parte porque era lo que hac\u00edan mi pap\u00e1 y mis t\u00edos. Ellos siempre estaban metidos en cuestiones pol\u00edticas, yo me la pasaba oyendo historias de mi t\u00edo que estaba unido a los campesinos y andaba en la sierra y luego ven\u00edan guerrilleros de Centroam\u00e9rica y se quedaban en mi casa. O sea, como que o\u00eda muchas cosas y quer\u00eda saber m\u00e1s, quer\u00eda ver eso que todo el mundo hablaba en mi casa. <\/span>\n\nCuando crec\u00ed estudi\u00e9 sociolog\u00eda, pero tambi\u00e9n me met\u00ed en el arte y arm\u00e9 un collage entre fotograf\u00eda y sociolog\u00eda, algo que a\u00fan no hab\u00eda en M\u00e9xico. Ah\u00ed entonces, mi primer impulso fue ir a esta zona donde se hab\u00eda muerto el t\u00edo abuelo aventurero: a la sierra de Guerrero. Mi pap\u00e1 hablaba mucho de eso y yo ten\u00eda esta idea de que no o\u00eda bien, como que no estaba segura de lo que escuchaba, porque adem\u00e1s mi mam\u00e1 me dec\u00eda que no contara en la escuela lo que escuchaba en casa. Los ni\u00f1os de mi escuela viv\u00edan otra realidad. Entonces, siempre dudaba de si era verdad lo que o\u00eda. <\/span>\n\nPara m\u00ed, ir a tomar una foto era crear una evidencia. Ya no creo en las evidencias, pero s\u00ed empec\u00e9 as\u00ed. Buscaba estar cerca por la necesidad de entender lo que dec\u00edan y hac\u00edan mi pap\u00e1 y mis t\u00edos. Era raro que una mujer como yo, rubia, estuviera caminando por ah\u00ed, eso nada m\u00e1s las prostitutas. Y aparte, pues s\u00ed se robaban mucho a las mujeres, hab\u00eda una violencia muy fuerte hacia la mujer. Yo me quedaba en una casa y dorm\u00eda con la se\u00f1ora en su cama, ella me cuidaba porque no quer\u00eda que sus hijos me hicieran da\u00f1o o que algo pasara. Siempre busqu\u00e9 hablar en los pueblos con el presidente municipal y con todos los hombres, les dec\u00eda qu\u00e9 hac\u00eda ah\u00ed para que entendieran.<\/span>\n\nPor momentos, como que me volv\u00eda la fot\u00f3grafa del pueblo. Me llamaban, por ejemplo, cuando mor\u00eda alguien. Ah\u00ed aprend\u00ed a relacionarme con la gente a trav\u00e9s de la foto. Aprend\u00ed a jugar con la gente para hacer retratos, era divertid\u00edsimo. Ten\u00edan las mujeres una sexualidad que yo no, as\u00ed que jugu\u00e9 much\u00edsimo con eso en muchos retratos.<\/span>\n\nLa violencia siempre estaba presente, para ir de un pueblo a otro nos \u00edbamos en grupos de mujeres, pero todas llevaban un cuchillo. Me sent\u00eda muy bien con las mujeres y de repente, empec\u00e9 a trabajar sobre prostituci\u00f3n. Tengo muchas fotos de prostituci\u00f3n de ah\u00ed, que nunca he sacado. A m\u00ed me impresionaba mucho que si una mujer no era virgen, esa mujer quedaba autom\u00e1ticamente fuera de la comunidad. Y no les quedaba de otra que irse al pueblo de al lado a prostituirse.  <\/span>\n\nCuando mostr\u00e9 mis fotos, al principio todos cre\u00edan que era Cuba, no M\u00e9xico. As\u00ed eran de ignorantes, ahora yo creo que ya hay una abertura mucho m\u00e1s grande, pero antes para nada. Cuando veo las fotos, digo wow, no he cambiado. Me encontr\u00e9 con las mismas fotos que toda la vida he perseguido. He cambiado de zona, pero sigue siendo lo mismo. Al inicio de tu carrera sientes que es ah\u00ed donde empezaron los temas que te atraen hasta hoy \u00bfC\u00f3mo llegaste a esa reflexi\u00f3n? <\/b>\n\nLa fotograf\u00eda es un camino tan personal. Siempre he escogido los temas, una cosa me lleva a la otra porque as\u00ed tambi\u00e9n son mis pensamientos es lo que estoy viviendo en este momento. Entonces es personal y es muy solitario, yo lo cuido como un tesoro. En mi caso el tema lleg\u00f3 y me movi\u00f3, no fue algo de lo que me sintiera obligada a hablar. De alguna manera, mi forma de trabajar est\u00e1 unida a la intuici\u00f3n.<\/span>\n\nO sea, no es solo, mi t\u00edo se fue a la Costa Chica, quiero ir ah\u00ed. No. Inici\u00f3 como un deseo, y luego fui entendiendo los significados. En la foto eso es lo m\u00e1s lindo: cuando de pronto ya llevas unos a\u00f1os, miras para atr\u00e1s todo el camino y te das cuenta de que todo tiene coherencia y te habla de ti misma. En ese sentido la foto es un privilegio. <\/span>\n\nEsta es una reflexi\u00f3n que despert\u00f3 hace poco. Cuando Claudi Carreras hizo la exposici\u00f3n de africamericanos y me pidi\u00f3 que revisara <\/span>Tierra Negra<\/span><\/i>. Yo no quer\u00eda. Pero cuando lo hice, me di cuenta de todo este camino recorrido.<\/span>\n\nHace un rato dec\u00edas que en ese primer proyecto empezaste a trabajar con mujeres y sanaci\u00f3n. \u00bfPor qu\u00e9 te interesaste por esos temas?<\/b>\n\nTodo fue a su paso, o sea, no fue que yo al principio dije: voy a hacer prostituci\u00f3n luego sanaci\u00f3n. Fue muy intuitivamente. Yo no soy racional, mis proyectos salen de cosas que uno no es tan consciente y luego van tomando sentido.<\/span>\n\nEso aprend\u00ed tambi\u00e9n de los primeros a\u00f1os de la foto que si vas con una idea muy fija no dejas que la vida te llegue. Si vas a comprobar tus teor\u00edas, hay algo que no llega. Lo m\u00e1s lindo es que la vida te sorprenda y la construcci\u00f3n es en ese momento. Y desde donde t\u00fa eres, lo vas descubriendo.<\/span>\n\nPara m\u00ed, lo m\u00e1s ching\u00f3n de la foto es que se te desmorone eso que t\u00fa pensabas. Si no pasa por el cuerpo qu\u00e9 sentido tiene. O sea, yo me puedo echar una teor\u00eda feminista, cabrona y claro, puedo salir y hacer visualmente que todo compagine y perfecto. Para m\u00ed eso no tiene sentido. Debe pasar por mi cuerpo y permitirme una confrontaci\u00f3n con la teor\u00eda feminista, con lo que yo pensaba, con mi propia forma de ser, con mi propio patriarcado.<\/span>\n\n\u00bfPor qu\u00e9 tanto inter\u00e9s en la prostituci\u00f3n?<\/b>\n\nTard\u00e9 mucho en darme cuenta y era obvio por qu\u00e9 estaba ah\u00ed, o sea, significa muchas cosas de violencia, pero era todo un cuestionamiento tambi\u00e9n a cosas muy fuertes que han vivido las mujeres de mi familia. El documental que hice en la Plaza de la Soledad sobre prostituci\u00f3n se lo dedico a todas las mam\u00e1s\u2026<\/span>\n\nLo de la prostituci\u00f3n fue respecto a todo este cuestionamiento de la buena mujer y de la mala mujer. Mis dos abuelas son totalmente diferentes, a una la juzgaban porque era s\u00faper sexual y en la otra como era trabajadora su sexualidad estaba borrada. Siempre hubo estas cosas. Cuando yo qued\u00e9 embarazada dije qu\u00e9 horror ahora tengo que jugar el papel de la buena madre que significaba un encierro a la mujer. Y no quise jugar, no me interesaba ese papel le ten\u00eda terror.<\/span>\n\nEn tus trabajos sobre mujeres, <\/b>Tierra negra, Desaparecidas, Plaza de la Soledad. <\/i><\/b>Hay mucha intimidad y tambi\u00e9n mucha violencia. \u00bfC\u00f3mo logras abordar los dos temas?<\/b>\n\nLa violencia est\u00e1 en todo. Entonces, son relaciones \u00edntimas cari\u00f1osas, pero tambi\u00e9n violentas, eso he aprendido y m\u00e1s cuando son relaciones de tanto tiempo. En La Merced fueron much\u00edsimos a\u00f1os y eso implica una complejidad de las relaciones y la confianza. Me ha revolcado y ha sido interesante, porque uno est\u00e1 metido en la violencia. En una de las escenas del documental estoy con ellas y de repente estamos muertas de risa en la rec\u00e1mara. Son una pareja, una mujer y un travesti, me est\u00e1n compartiendo c\u00f3mo en su vida \u00edntima hay violencia y yo me estoy muriendo de risa con ellas. Entonces me veo en el espejo y sale en el documental el espejo donde yo estoy con la c\u00e1mara diciendo yo tambi\u00e9n soy parte de esto. Yo tambi\u00e9n estoy aqu\u00ed, ri\u00e9ndome de esta violencia que me est\u00e1n compartiendo.<\/span>\n\nDe alguna forma hay que pensar hasta d\u00f3nde quieres ser part\u00edcipe. Creo que les pasa a todos los fot\u00f3grafos: llega un punto donde debes decidir hasta d\u00f3nde quieres estar o hasta donde no. Y luego la siguiente es: tom\u00e9 la foto y la voy a publicar o no la voy a publicar.  <\/span>\n\nLa violencia y la \u00e9tica las vives a diario. Creo que eso se ve mucho en dos trabajos que, hasta donde entiendo, est\u00e1n relacionados: <\/b>Desaparecidas <\/i><\/b>y <\/b>Tierra de brujas. <\/i><\/b>\u00bfC\u00f3mo se dio esa relaci\u00f3n?<\/b>\n\nDesaparecidas<\/span><\/i> no sali\u00f3 de algo, digamos, personal, pero s\u00ed de estas b\u00fasquedas que de repente dejas abiertas. Un d\u00eda, me hablaron de derechos humanos, hab\u00edan matado a una mujer en una de las calles m\u00e1s concurridas a plena luz del d\u00eda. Yo iba con derechos humanos y entre las mujeres hab\u00eda un hombre que dijo que era cliente y entonces nos gan\u00f3 a todos. <\/span>\n\nYo no sab\u00eda bien, pero algo estaba pasando ah\u00ed. Luego, en las calles me enter\u00e9 que el cliente buena onda, pues en realidad era el padrote, el chulo. Cuando el cuerpo de la chica ya iba para la fosa com\u00fan, llegaron unas personas que dijeron que a lo mejor era su hija y, s\u00ed, era de la Sierra, le hab\u00edan cambiado los papeles, el nombre. Qued\u00e9 muy impactada por esa historia. <\/span>\n\nEntonces ped\u00ed una beca. Empec\u00e9 a fotografiar <\/span>Desaparecidas<\/span><\/i> en el 2004. En Ciudad Ju\u00e1rez me enamor\u00e9 de mi pareja, o sea, hab\u00eda un festival de Cine y bailamos como tres d\u00edas. Ah\u00ed empec\u00e9 a enterarme de las desapariciones de mujeres y al investigar descubr\u00ed que hab\u00eda muchas cosas que yo ya hab\u00eda visto en otras partes. Un punto que me interesa de la prostituci\u00f3n es la violencia hacia la mujer, uno de los mecanismos m\u00e1s comunes es el cambio de identidad, les quitan los papeles y las dejan solas. Ese es un punto muy importante, y por ah\u00ed me conect\u00e9 con lo de las <\/span>Desaparecidas<\/span><\/i>. Creo que fue el tema m\u00e1s doloroso porque la prostituci\u00f3n tambi\u00e9n es dolor, pero estuve desde muchos lados, o sea, desde talleres, con el movimiento feminista. Adem\u00e1s, entr\u00e9 en una agencia y toda la presi\u00f3n me estaba quitando el gusto por la fotograf\u00eda. En un tiempo, se me paralizaron las manos.<\/span>\n\nEn esos d\u00edas me invitaron a dar un taller en el desierto y me hablaron de un pueblo famoso por las brujas. Mira, este M\u00e9xico ha cambiado y si te das chances se te mete el miedo en el cuerpo, yo sent\u00ed que se meti\u00f3. Entonces, ah\u00ed empez\u00f3 toda una cosa de sanaci\u00f3n y de brujer\u00eda. Desde ah\u00ed empec\u00e9 a investigar, hice <\/span>Tierra de brujas<\/span><\/i>, y se ha vuelto como mi lo m\u00e1s importante en mi vida, esa b\u00fasqueda de sanar heridas.<\/span>\n\nEs decir, \u00bfencontraste en la brujer\u00eda el camino hacia la sanaci\u00f3n?<\/b>\n\nS\u00ed, lleg\u00f3 un punto en que yo ya no quer\u00eda ver nada m\u00e1s desde la violencia. No pod\u00eda con tanta. Cuando muri\u00f3 mi padre, entend\u00ed que hab\u00eda un compromiso, yo sent\u00eda que ten\u00eda que hacer algo social fuerte. Pero de repente ya no quer\u00eda m\u00e1s oscuridad, y fue as\u00ed como abr\u00ed las paredes y dej\u00e9 que entrara un poco de luz. As\u00ed empec\u00e9 a buscar curanderas, ahora estoy muy metida en entender que si no cambiamos como individuos, pues c\u00f3mo vamos a hacer un cambio. <\/span>\n\nCon ese cambio me voy a la sierra de Oaxaca y aprendo con varios curanderos un poquito, o sea, era un poco sobre masajes, sobre plantas, sobre distintas cosas. Decid\u00ed como dar vuelta todo porque hago fotos pero tambi\u00e9n voy aprendiendo.<\/span>\n\nEn todo este proceso de sanaci\u00f3n, \u00bfsientes que lograste soltar el miedo?<\/b>\n\nEl miedo es un tema en mi vida muy interesante. Creo que tuve miedo desde chiquita y que lo he buscado. No me ha paralizado, sino m\u00e1s bien es como una cosa de salir y querer verlo. Me gusta ver las cosas de frente, aunque tenga miedo, ver qu\u00e9 es lo que est\u00e1 pasando y entenderlo. Es parte de todos, aunque luego se te mete en el cuerpo de otra forma terrible. Es m\u00e1s f\u00e1cil decir que lo malo est\u00e1 afuera, pero no, ese es el ser humano. En Ciudad Ju\u00e1rez vi que todos tenemos eso dentro, y me dio miedo lo que podemos llegar a ser. Lo que me gusta de las curanderas es que saben navegar en medio de esto.
