Between the 1960s and 1980s, there was talk of a &#8220;marijuana boom&#8221; when Colombia became one of the world&#8217;s leading exporters of narcotics and a key country in the developing &#8220;War on Drugs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>How did Colombia go from being a coffee-producing country to a drug-producing nation? The third episode of Jardines y Laberintos searches for answers, and we speak with Lina Britto, Colombian journalist, anthropologist, and historian. Lina has just published in Spanish her book Marijuana Boom: The Rise and Fall of Colombia&#8217;s First Drug Paradise; an ambitious investigation that seeks to understand a forgotten chapter of the country&#8217;s history.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is during this marijuana bonanza, not cocaine, that Colombia becomes a theater of operations for the war on drugs,&#8221; observes the specialist. &#8220;The conditions that made it possible for this economy to emerge came neither from the absence nor the weakness of the state, but on the contrary from a lot of state reforms that several Colombian governments, associated with several U.S. governments, were carrying out throughout the twentieth century in different areas of this region.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>For Britto, understanding what the marimba bonanza was is essential &#8220;because it tells us about a transition we lived through as a nation, how we went from being an essentially coffee-growing republic to a narcotics-producing nation. All in a quarter of a century&#8221;. A transformation that implied legal reforms and an escalation in the use of force: it was a matter of &#8220;using the repressive state apparatus, mainly the armed forces through the Ministry of Defense with money from the United States, and launching a campaign of crop eradication and interdiction of trafficking. This war has never happened before; it is the first time we are doing this with money and political support from the United States. Lina acaba de publicar en espa\u00f1ol su libro <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">El Boom de la marihuana. Auge y ca\u00edda del primer para\u00edso de las drogas en Colombia. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Una investigaci\u00f3n ambiciosa que busca entender un cap\u00edtulo olvidado de la historia del pa\u00eds.&nbsp;<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cEs durante esta bonanza de la marihuana, no de la coca\u00edna, que Colombia se convierte en un teatro de operaciones de la guerra contra las drogas\u201d, observa la especialista. \u201cLas condiciones que hicieron posible que esta econom\u00eda surgiera no ven\u00edan ni de la ausencia ni de la debilidad del Estado, sino al contrario de un mont\u00f3n de reformas estatales que varios gobiernos de Colombia, asociados con varios gobiernos de Estados Unidos, fueron llevando a cabo a lo largo del siglo XX en distintas \u00e1reas de esta regi\u00f3n.\u201d<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Para Britto, entender qu\u00e9 fue la bonanza marimbera es importante \u201c\u200b\u200bporque nos habla de una transici\u00f3n que vivimos como naci\u00f3n, de c\u00f3mo pasamos de ser una rep\u00fablica esencialmente cafetera a una naci\u00f3n productora de narc\u00f3ticos. Todo en un cuarto de siglo\u201d. Una transformaci\u00f3n que implic\u00f3 reformas legales y una escalada en el uso de la fuerza: se trat\u00f3 de \u201cutilizar el aparato represivo estatal, principalmente las fuerzas armadas a trav\u00e9s del Ministerio de Defensa con dineros venidos de Estados Unidos, y lanzar una campa\u00f1a de erradicaci\u00f3n de cultivos y de interdicci\u00f3n del tr\u00e1fico. Eso no hab\u00eda sucedido antes en ning\u00fan momento, esta es la primera vez que hacemos eso con dinero y el apoyo pol\u00edtico de Estados Unidos.
