Felipe Alarc\u00f3n is a photographer who has been documenting symbolic reparation processes led by the Centro Nacional de Memoria Hist\u00f3rica (National Center for Historical Memory, CNMH) in Colombia for several years. He has accompanied about eight cases: one of them is that of San Jos\u00e9 de Alb\u00e1n, a municipality in the south of the country that experienced more than 20 years of violence.<\/span><\/p>\n

One Sunday in 1998, the town of San Jos\u00e9 de Alb\u00e1n was in the middle of market day. Elizabeth Erazo Bolivar, a teenager in her last years of high school, was walking along with her mother, holding her hand, as she did every week, while they shopped in the central square. Suddenly they heard some rumbling. It was the first time the guerrillas had entered the town center to attack the police station directly. Elizabeth and her mother were very close to the station. Before they could understand what was happening, a grenade exploded over the girl’s head.<\/span><\/p>\n

The injuries were severe: Elizabeth spent a year in the hospital trying to recover, but in the end, she did not. The event shocked the family. Thirty years later, Elizabeth’s portraits cover the Erazo home’s walls. Their grief is not over. Colombian photographer Felipe Alarc\u00f3n Correa visited the place as part of the symbolic reparation work being carried out by the CNMH.<\/span><\/p>\n

At first, the war is always gossip and so it feels far away. But suddenly, it gets closer. First, it affects the neighbors. It was like that in the Nari\u00f1o municipality of San Jos\u00e9 de Alb\u00e1n, in southern Colombia. In 1990 the first stories began to be heard from the neighboring city, Tabl\u00f3n de G\u00f3mez, on the border with northern Putumayo and southern Cauca. The people spoke of strange and armed people who traveled through the villages and gathered the villagers to announce their arrival.<\/span><\/p>\n

Shortly after that, these same strangers arrived in Alb\u00e1n. At first, they were seen in the rural areas and then in the urban center. In November 1994, the murder of three people shocked the population. That same year, the first kidnapping of a villager took place. It began a series of violent events that shook the area for 20 years. These events included assassinations, kidnappings, bombings, four guerrilla takeovers, and confrontations between different armed actors, including paramilitaries.<\/span><\/p>\n

The event that ended Elizabeth’s life was the moment when violence in Alb\u00e1n intensified. According to the CNMH, paramilitary groups, FARC-EP guerrillas, ELN guerrillas, and the National Army were present in Alb\u00e1n. In addition to all the human rights violations, one of the most visible results was the community displacement that began in 1999, when the first guerrilla takeover took place. Another less visible result was the rupture of the ties of union and solidarity among the residents.<\/span><\/p>\n

After the signing of the peace agreement with the FARC – and as part of the victim reparation processes that began years ago – the peasant community of Alb\u00e1n was recognized as a subject of collective reparation. According to the <\/span>Unidad de Victimas<\/span><\/a> (Victims Unit), collective reparation topics include peasants and neighborhood communities, ethnic communities and peoples, organizations, groups, and social movements that existed before the victimizing events. And “that suffered collective damages, that is, transformations to their characteristic elements as a collective due to serious and manifest violations to Human Rights and violations to Collective Rights in the context of the armed conflict.”<\/span><\/p>\n

This has also happened with other communities in Colombia, and photographers like Felipe have accompanied several processes of symbolic reparation, which are part of the integral reparation. According to \u00c1lvaro Pati\u00f1o, this type of reparations, which are neither economic nor judicial, “seek to subvert the logic of forgetfulness and individuality in which societies in which human rights violations were perpetrated tend to fall into, extending the pain of the victims to the community, through a critical look at the past that transcends the future. Above all, what is sought is, through collective memory processes, to heal wounds and avoid repetitions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Symbolic reparations are made in direct dialogue with the victims and can result in podcasts, photo books, comics, documentaries, and exhibitions. Felipe has accompanied cases in different parts of the country, such as San Andr\u00e9s de Pisimbal\u00e1 in Cauca, Kwe’sx Yu’ Kiwe in the north of Valle del Cauca, San Jos\u00e9 del Play\u00f3n and San Basilio de Palenque in Bol\u00edvar, Antonia Santos in C\u00facuta (Norte de Santander), the case of the leader<\/span> Yolanda Cer\u00f3n<\/span><\/a> in Nari\u00f1o, Eyakera in Dari\u00e9n (Choc\u00f3).<\/span><\/p>\n

Felipe always works hand in hand with other researchers, and the process includes several meetings to build a narrative with the inhabitants of the affected places. Together they decide everything: the axes of the narrative, the categories to be explored in depth, and the final results. In addition to working with the Erazo family, Felipe visited the Chapiurco village, where productive projects were developed with the reparation funds. There they have a photographic archive in telescopic viewers for viewing slides. He included many images from that archive and others from family albums.<\/span><\/p>\n

In Alb\u00e1n is where Felipe has been able to be and share more time with the people. In the town, many people are unwilling to forgive the violent acts committed, especially by the FARC guerrillas. Remembering some of the events is still painful, removing scars that have not yet healed. Despite its rejection, in Alb\u00e1n Petro won the presidential elections, a remarkable triumph in a place with so much rejection towards people who have been part of insurgent forces. Perhaps that has to do with the slow movement toward forgiveness.<\/span><\/p>\n

For Felipe, Alb\u00e1n is “a peasant town that is slowly recomposing itself from the trauma of the war, where mourning is beginning to be processed, even in the face of new threats and the uncertainty of a conflict that is not yet over.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Felipe Alarc\u00f3n is a photographer who has been documenting symbolic reparation processes led by the Centro Nacional de Memoria Hist\u00f3rica (National Center for Historical Memory, CNMH) in Colombia for several years. He has accompanied about eight cases: one of them is that of San Jos\u00e9 de Alb\u00e1n, a municipality in the south of the country that experienced more than 20 years of violence.<\/span><\/h1>\n

One Sunday in 1998, the town of San Jos\u00e9 de Alb\u00e1n was in the middle of market day. Elizabeth Erazo Bolivar, a teenager in her last years of high school, was walking along with her mother, holding her hand, as she did every week, while they shopped in the central square. Suddenly they heard some rumbling. It was the first time the guerrillas had entered the town center to attack the police station directly. Elizabeth and her mother were very close to the station. Before they could understand what was happening, a grenade exploded over the girl's head.<\/span><\/h1>\n

The injuries were severe: Elizabeth spent a year in the hospital trying to recover, but in the end, she did not. The event shocked the family. Thirty years later, Elizabeth's portraits cover the Erazo home's walls. Their grief is not over. Colombian photographer Felipe Alarc\u00f3n Correa visited the place as part of the symbolic reparation work being carried out by the CNMH.<\/span><\/h1>\n

At first, the war is always gossip and so it feels far away. But suddenly, it gets closer. First, it affects the neighbors. It was like that in the Nari\u00f1o municipality of San Jos\u00e9 de Alb\u00e1n, in southern Colombia. In 1990 the first stories began to be heard from the neighboring city, Tabl\u00f3n de G\u00f3mez, on the border with northern Putumayo and southern Cauca. The people spoke of strange and armed people who traveled through the villages and gathered the villagers to announce their arrival.<\/span><\/h1>\n

Shortly after that, these same strangers arrived in Alb\u00e1n. At first, they were seen in the rural areas and then in the urban center. In November 1994, the murder of three people shocked the population. That same year, the first kidnapping of a villager took place. It began a series of violent events that shook the area for 20 years. These events included assassinations, kidnappings, bombings, four guerrilla takeovers, and confrontations between different armed actors, including paramilitaries.<\/span><\/h1>\nThe event that ended Elizabeth's life was the moment when violence in Alb\u00e1n intensified. According to the CNMH, paramilitary groups, FARC-EP guerrillas, ELN guerrillas, and the National Army were present in Alb\u00e1n. In addition to all the human rights violations, one of the most visible results was the community displacement that began in 1999, when the first guerrilla takeover took place. Another less visible result was the rupture of the ties of union and solidarity among the residents.<\/span>\n\n[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=\"1_2,1_2\" procesos de reparaci\u00f3n de v\u00edctimas que empezaron a\u00f1os atr\u00e1s\u2014, la comunidad campesina de Alb\u00e1n fue reconocida como un sujeto de reparaci\u00f3n colectiva. Seg\u00fan la Unidad de V\u00edctimas<\/a>, los sujetos de reparaci\u00f3n colectiva pueden ser comunidades campesinas y barriales, comunidades y pueblos \u00e9tnicos, organizaciones, grupos y movimientos sociales que exist\u00edan antes de los hechos victimizantes y \u201cque sufrieron da\u00f1os colectivos, es decir, transformaciones a sus elementos caracter\u00edsticos como colectivo debido a vulneraciones graves y manifiestas a los Derechos Humanos y violaciones a los Derechos Colectivos en el contexto del conflicto armado\u201d.\n\nAs\u00ed tambi\u00e9n ha sucedido con otras comunidades en Colombia, y fot\u00f3grafos como Felipe han acompa\u00f1ado varios procesos de reparaci\u00f3n simb\u00f3lica, que hacen parte de la reparaci\u00f3n integral. De acuerdo con \u00c1lvaro Pati\u00f1o<\/a>, este tipo de reparaciones que no son de naturaleza econ\u00f3mica ni judicial, \u201cbuscan subvertir las l\u00f3gicas de olvido e individualidad en las que suelen caer las sociedades en donde se perpetraron violaciones a derechos humanos, ampliando hacia la comunidad el dolor de las v\u00edctimas, a trav\u00e9s de una mirada cr\u00edtica de lo pasado que trasciende al futuro\u201d. Ante todo, lo que se busca es, mediante procesos de memoria colectiva, sanar heridas y evitar repeticiones.\n\nLas reparaciones simb\u00f3licas se hacen en di\u00e1logo directo con las v\u00edctimas y de ellas pueden resultar podcasts, fotolibros, comics, documentales, exposiciones. Felipe ha acompa\u00f1ado casos en diferentes lugares del pa\u00eds como: San Andr\u00e9s de Pisimbal\u00e1 en el Cauca, Kwe\u2019sx Yu\u2019 Kiwe en el norte del Valle del Cauca, San Jos\u00e9 del Play\u00f3n y San Basilio de Palenque en Bol\u00edvar, Antonia Santos en C\u00facuta (Norte de Santander), el caso de la l\u00edder Yolanda Cer\u00f3n<\/a> en Nari\u00f1o, Eyakera en el Dari\u00e9n (Choc\u00f3).\n\nFelipe siempre trabaja de la mano de otros investigadores, y el proceso incluye varias reuniones para construir una narrativa con los habitantes de los lugares afectados. Juntos deciden todo: los ejes de la narraci\u00f3n, las categor\u00edas en las que se quiere profundizar y los resultados finales. A partir del trabajo hecho en Alb\u00e1n, se publicar\u00e1 el libro Un viaje por nuestra historia. Memorias Visuales de la Comunidad de San Jos\u00e9 de Alb\u00e1n, Nari\u00f1o, con textos de los investigadores Jairo Orteg\u00f3n y Mar\u00eda Alejandra Lozano y fotos de Felipe.\n\nAdem\u00e1s de trabajar con la familia Erazo, Felipe visit\u00f3 la vereda Chapiurco en la cual se desarrollaron proyectos productivos con los fondos de la reparaci\u00f3n. Ah\u00ed tienen un archivo fotogr\u00e1fico en visores telesc\u00f3picos para ver diapositivas. En su trabajo incluy\u00f3 muchas de las im\u00e1genes de ese archivo y otros de \u00e1lbumes familiares.\n\nEn Alb\u00e1n es donde Felipe ha podido estar y compartir m\u00e1s tiempo con las personas. En el pueblo hay mucha gente que no est\u00e1 dispuesta a perdonar los actos violentos cometidos, especialmente, por la guerrilla de las FARC. Rememorar algunos sucesos sigue siendo doloroso y remueve cicatrices que a\u00fan no han terminado de sanar. A pesar de su rechazo, en Alb\u00e1n gan\u00f3 Petro en las elecciones presidenciales, un triunfo llamativo en un lugar con tanto rechazo hacia personas que hayan sido parte de fuerzas insurgentes.
