Popay\u00e1n is one of the oldest cities in Colombia. Among other things, it is known for its traditional Catholic celebration of Holy Week. In 2014, the mayor’s office issued a decree banning “profane-type spectacles” during that religious celebration, considering them disrespectful of tradition. Yes, this was happening in a secular country in the 21st century. Faced with this situation: Alexa Mu\u00f1oz de la Hoz, M\u00f3nica Quevedo Hernandez, Natalia Fernandez Hormiga, and Olga Benavides, graphic design students t that moment, decided to join forces to create accessories, decorative elements, and other things with explicitly profane themes. They called this meeting Aquelarre.<\/span><\/p>\n

Seven years have passed, and Aquelarre is still alive, now as a design laboratory, which will soon also be called feminist, like this: Aquelarre. Feminist design laboratory. The four of them have transformed in all these years: they graduated from university. They went from making accessories to creating, designing, and accompanying pedagogical processes associated with sex education, the gender approach, and feminist debates.<\/span><\/p>\n

The witches of Aquelarre were the illustrators of all the pedagogical material that accompanies our project Imaginar el Fuego de la Memoria. Last week, we saw their illustrations displayed at the AECID Training Center in Cartagena. In this interview, they tell us a little about their trajectory.<\/span><\/p>\n

You started working together in response to that 2014 ordinance in Popay\u00e1n. At what point and how did you consolidate as a collective?<\/b><\/p>\n

Olga:<\/b> Two things happened: the first was that we began to build spaces for collective creation, both among ourselves and other people. So, for example, we held a short story contest which resulted in a publication called <\/span>La Hora Muerta<\/span><\/i> (The Dead Hour). The second thing is that we continued our academic training and began to relate to critical theory, especially feminism and gender. In that case, our first approach was with a project that already had a prototype<\/span>, Anatom\u00eda de un Sujeto Andante<\/span><\/i> (Anatomy of a walking subject). There we began to investigate the evolution of sexuality, playing with the format of the text.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nata:<\/b> In addition, with Alexa, we had a project called <\/span>Trans-figura<\/span><\/i>, with sex workers from the Bolivar neighborhood, generating spaces for discussion and collaborative creation, seeking to vindicate their rights. We came from the student mobilization, and we had learned that design could be part of all the initiatives developed in the territory. We realized that design allowed us to plan and generate spaces with these projects. That is to say, not only thinking about the final piece, but with the whole process, we were able to dynamize something bigger and more powerful: a social process.<\/span><\/p>\n

Alexa:<\/b> We were doing all that and talking a lot, but we had not stopped to think that this could be Aquelarre. In 2017 we talked and realized that we had questions in common about certain things. Between the four of us, we did two-degree projects that coincide in that they are designs of educational materials to talk about gender and sexuality. Then we realized that this also had a political purpose for the four of us and that we had the skills to achieve it. There, we stopped the production of accessories related to witch stuff and decided to think about creating our design lab where we develop both our projects of educational materials and offer design services.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This political approach to design is fascinating. Arturo Escobar criticizes solely instrumental design in <\/b>Designs for the Pluriverse: Radical Interdependence, Autonomy, and the Making of Worlds<\/i><\/b> and proposes to get out of that place to think about its autonomy and political potential.<\/b><\/p>\n

Alexa<\/b>: It is difficult to leave that place because design history is associated with industrialization processes and capitalism. But I believe that our political commitment to generate content allows us to create other ways of relating to creative approaches. For example, when we are called to work, we try to have critical voices within our projects, and we propose ourselves as part of the teams. We don’t think of people as clients unless they are very technical assignments. We think of these people as accomplices or allies in the process of creation and research.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

M\u00f3nica<\/b>: In this sense, it is important to say where we come from; Unicauca proposes a design that thinks about the context and recognizes that we are in an especific social place, in this case, in Cauca. These are essential questions for us: what is the role of design in society? And what are we contributing from there? We call ourselves a laboratory because Aquelarre is a space for joint creation and experimentation. We not only materialize ideas with others but also continue working on our projects that respond to questions that cross us as women.<\/span><\/p>\n

The idea of collaborative creation is often repeated. Is that the approach?<\/b><\/p>\n

Natalia:<\/b> For us, it is essential because we understand that what we do is not done by the four of us alone. We weave crucial networks. That is why we consider that interdisciplinarity and dialogue are essential concepts for building. We are aware of the limits of our discipline, but we believe that they are not a disadvantage but a possibility to work with others.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why the emphasis on pedagogical processes?<\/b><\/p>\n

Natalia:<\/b> The student mobilization of 2011 was significant for me because that’s when I understood that design was not only what I was thinking at the time. I realized its full communicative and political potential. That’s when I understood the importance of education. We are also the daughters of teachers, and in our homes, the discourse is that if we educate ourselves, we can move forward and mobilize.<\/span><\/p>\n

We believe it is vital to create elements that allow us to learn, doubt, debate, and dialogue, which can be done through pedagogy.<\/span><\/p>\n

Olga: <\/b>Education also brings us closer to a critical view of the world. Thus we could realize that the world is not still but that there are truths positioned through discourses of power, established through hegemonic forces that have the tools to stay in that place. I feel recognized with the learning processes by understanding that between learning and narrative, I manage to reach exercises of doubt, and thus we can generate methods of resistance.<\/span><\/p>\n

Why did you choose illustration?<\/b><\/p>\n

Natalia:<\/b> we feel that with illustration, we can build other worlds. In drawings, everything is possible.<\/span><\/p>\n

Alexa:<\/b> We have learned to illustrate together. We are not interested in saying that this book is Olga’s and this one is Monica’s, but that there is a sense of collective ownership. Illustration has also provided us with a tool for co-creation. And at this moment, we are recognized for doing illustrations and talking about specific topics.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Monica: <\/b>Illustration is something that moves, that awakens emotions, and leaves behind the idea of realism that other types of image creation can have.<\/span><\/p>\n

Soon the name will be Laboratorio de dise\u00f1o feminista (Feminist Design Lab). What does this imply?<\/b><\/p>\n

Nata:<\/b> I think it is a political stance. It is like a new layer that arrives. Let’s say one grows in layers like the earth. Now we are much more conscious and focused on the search to work from that perspective. We want to think of ourselves from a feminist perspective. And that will determine the way we approach the research, the sources, the information, the techniques, and the formats.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Alexa: <\/b>But it also helps us think about our practices among ourselves since we are not only colleagues but also friends. That is where feminism has materialized. When we decide what we will bet on, we ask ourselves what is going on in our lives. Working in Aquelarre is personal work. We know each other in many ways, which makes us prioritize care without romanticizing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Olga: <\/b>Feminism is a transversal exercise. It puts us in the dynamic of relating to each other from the idea that the people we interact with have good views of the world. It implies an exercise of active listening to ourselves and to the people with whom we do projects. En 2014, la alcald\u00eda de la ciudad emiti\u00f3 un decreto en el que prohib\u00eda \u201cespect\u00e1culos de tipo profano\u201d durante esa celebraci\u00f3n religiosa, al considerarlos irrespetuosos de la tradici\u00f3n. S\u00ed, eso suced\u00eda en un pa\u00eds laico en pleno siglo XXI. Ante esta situaci\u00f3n: Alexa Mu\u00f1oz de la Hoz, M\u00f3nica Quevedo Hernandez, Natalia Fernandez Hormiga y Olga Benavides, en ese momento estudiantes de dise\u00f1o gr\u00e1fico decidieron unirse para crear accesorios, elementos de decoraci\u00f3n y otras cosas con tem\u00e1ticas expl\u00edcitamente profanas. Llamaron a este encuentro Aquelarre.\n\nHan pasado siete a\u00f1os y el Aquelarre sigue vivo, ahora como un laboratorio de dise\u00f1o, que pronto tambi\u00e9n ser\u00e1 llamado de feminista, as\u00ed: Aquelarre. Laboratorio de dise\u00f1o feminista. En todos estos a\u00f1os, las cuatro vivieron sendas transformaciones: se graduaron de la universidad, pasaron de hacer accesorios a crear, dise\u00f1ar y acompa\u00f1ar procesos pedag\u00f3gicos asociados a la educaci\u00f3n sexual, el enfoque de g\u00e9nero y los debates feministas.\nLas brujas de Aquelarre fueron las ilustradoras de todo el material pedag\u00f3gico que acompa\u00f1a nuestro proyecto Imaginar el fuego de la memoria. As\u00ed, por ejemplo, hicimos un concurso de cuento corto del cual sali\u00f3 una publicaci\u00f3n llamada <\/span>La hora muerta<\/span><\/i>. La segunda cosa es que continuamos nuestra formaci\u00f3n acad\u00e9mica y empezamos a relacionarnos con teor\u00eda cr\u00edtica, especialmente el feminismo y el g\u00e9nero. En ese caso nuestro primer acercamiento fue con un proyecto que ya ten\u00eda un prototipo,<\/span> Anatom\u00eda de un sujeto andante. <\/span><\/i>Ah\u00ed ya empezamos a indagar el devenir de la sexualidad, jugando con el formato del texto.<\/span>\n\nNata: <\/b>adem\u00e1s, con Alexa ven\u00edamos con un proyecto llamado <\/span>Trans-figura<\/span><\/i>, con trabajadoras sexuales del barrio Bol\u00edvar generando espacios de discusi\u00f3n y creaci\u00f3n colaborativa, buscando la reivindicaci\u00f3n de los derechos de ellas. Nosotras ven\u00edamos de la movilizaci\u00f3n estudiantil y hab\u00edamos aprendido que el dise\u00f1o pod\u00eda  hacer parte de todos los procesos que se desarrollan en el territorio. Con esos proyectos nos dimos cuenta de que el dise\u00f1o nos permit\u00eda planear y generar espacios. Es decir, no pensar solo en la pieza final, sino que con todo el proceso logramos dinamizar algo m\u00e1s grande y potente: un proceso social.<\/span>\n\nAlexa: <\/b>nosotras \u00edbamos haciendo todo eso y conversando mucho, pero no nos hab\u00edamos detenido a pensar que eso pod\u00eda ser Aquelarre. En el 2017 tuvimos una conversaci\u00f3n y nos dimos cuenta de que ten\u00edamos preguntas en com\u00fan sobre ciertas cosas. Entre las cuatro hicimos dos proyectos de grado que coinciden en que son dise\u00f1os de materiales educativos para hablar de g\u00e9nero y sexualidad. Ah\u00ed nos dimos cuenta de que adem\u00e1s para las 4 eso ten\u00eda un prop\u00f3sito pol\u00edtico y que nosotras ten\u00edamos las habilidades para lograrlo. Arturo Escobar hace una cr\u00edtica al dise\u00f1o \u00fanicamente instrumental en <\/b>Autonom\u00eda y dise\u00f1o <\/i><\/b> y propone salir de ese lugar para que se piense eso su autonom\u00eda y su potencial pol\u00edtico.<\/b>\n\nAlexa: <\/b>es dif\u00edcil salir de ese lugar porque la historia del dise\u00f1o ha estado asociada a procesos de industrializaci\u00f3n y al capitalismo. Pero creo que nuestra apuesta pol\u00edtica por generar contenido nos permite crear otras formas de relacionarnos en los procesos creativos. Por ejemplo, cuando nos llaman a trabajar procuramos tener voces cr\u00edticas dentro de los proyectos hacia lo que nosotras hacemos, nos proponemos como parte de los equipos. No pensamos en las personas como clientes, a menos que se trate de encargos muy t\u00e9cnicos. Nosotras pensamos en esas personas como c\u00f3mplices o aliados en procesos de creaci\u00f3n e investigaci\u00f3n. <\/span>\n\nM\u00f3nica: <\/b>en ese sentido es importante decir de d\u00f3nde venimos, la escuela de Unicauca propone un dise\u00f1o que piense el contexto, que reconozca que estamos situadas y en este caso en el Cauca. Para nosotras esas son preguntas esenciales: cu\u00e1l es el papel del dise\u00f1o en la sociedad y qu\u00e9 estamos aportando nosotras desde ah\u00ed. Por eso nos enunciamos como laboratorio, porque Aquelarre es un espacio de creaci\u00f3n y experimentaci\u00f3n conjunta en el que no solo materializamos ideas con otres, sino que tambi\u00e9n seguimos trabajando en nuestros proyectos que responden a preguntas que nos atraviesan como mujeres.<\/span>\n\nSe repite bastante la idea de la creaci\u00f3n colaborativa. \u00bfEs ese el enfoque?<\/b>\n\nNatalia: <\/b>para nosotras es bien importante porque entendemos que lo que hacemos, no lo hacemos  las cuatro solas. Sino que tejemos unas redes que son s\u00faper importantes. Por ello consideramos que la interdisciplinariedad y el di\u00e1logo son conceptos claves a la hora de construir. Nosotras somos conscientes de los l\u00edmites de nuestra disciplina, pero creemos que no son una desventaja sino una posibilidad para trabajar con otres. <\/span>\n\n\u00bfPor qu\u00e9 el \u00e9nfasis en los procesos pedag\u00f3gicos?<\/b>\n\nNatalia:<\/b> para m\u00ed fue muy importante la movilizaci\u00f3n estudiantil del 2011 porque ah\u00ed entend\u00ed que el dise\u00f1o no era solo lo que yo estaba pensando en ese momento. Me di cuenta de todo su potencial comunicativo y pol\u00edtico. Ah\u00ed entend\u00ed la importancia de la educaci\u00f3n. Con la educaci\u00f3n podemos transformar la realidad.  <\/span>\n\nCreemos que es importante crear elementos que nos permitan aprender, dudar, debatir y dialogar y eso se puede hacer desde la pedagog\u00eda.<\/span>\n\nOlga: <\/b>la educaci\u00f3n tambi\u00e9n nos acerca a una mirada cr\u00edtica del mundo. As\u00ed pudimos darnos cuenta de que el mundo no est\u00e1 quieto, sino que existen verdades posicionadas a trav\u00e9s de discursos de poder, que se han establecido mediante fuerzas hegem\u00f3nicas que tienen las herramientas para mantenerse en ese lugar. Yo me siento reconocida con los procesos de aprendizaje al entender que entre el aprendizaje y la narrativa, logro llegar a ejercicios de dudar y as\u00ed podemos generar procesos de resistencia.<\/span>\n\n\u00bfPor qu\u00e9 eligieron la ilustraci\u00f3n?<\/b>\n\nNatalia: <\/b>sentimos que con la ilustraci\u00f3n se pueden construir otros mundos, en los dibujos todo es posible.<\/span>\n\nAlexa:<\/b> nosotras hemos aprendido a ilustrar juntas. A nosotras no nos interesa decir que este libro es de Olga y este es de M\u00f3nica sino que hay un sentido de la propiedad colectiva.  La ilustraci\u00f3n nos ha brindado tambi\u00e9n una herramienta de cocreaci\u00f3n. Y en este momento somos reconocidas por hacer ilustraci\u00f3n y por hablar de ciertos temas. <\/span>\n\nM\u00f3nica: <\/b>la ilustraci\u00f3n es algo que conmueve, que despierta emociones y sale de la idea de lo realista que puede tener otro tipo de creaci\u00f3n de im\u00e1genes.<\/span>\n\nPronto el nombre ser\u00e1 Laboratorio de dise\u00f1o feminista, \u00bfqu\u00e9 implica esto?<\/b>\n\nNata: <\/b>Yo creo que es una postura pol\u00edtica. Es como una nueva capa que llega, digamos, uno va creciendo en capas como la tierra. Ahorita estamos mucho m\u00e1s conscientes y centradas en la b\u00fasqueda de trabajar desde esa perspectiva queremos pensarnos desde el feminismo. Y eso va a determinar la forma en que abordemos las investigaciones, las fuentes, la informaci\u00f3n, las t\u00e9cnicas, los formatos. <\/span>\n\nAlexa: <\/b>pero adem\u00e1s nos ayuda a pensar las pr\u00e1cticas entre nosotras, que adem\u00e1s de colegas somos amigas. Ah\u00ed es donde el feminismo se ha materializado. Cuando decidimos a qu\u00e9 le vamos a apostar nos preguntamos qu\u00e9 est\u00e1 pasando en nuestra vida. Trabajar en Aquelarre es s\u00ed o s\u00ed un trabajo \u00edntimo, nos conocemos en muchas facetas y eso hace que prioricemos el cuidado, sin romantizar. <\/span>\n\nOlga: <\/b>el feminismo es un ejercicio transversal, nos pone en la din\u00e1mica de relacionarnos desde la idea de que las personas con quienes interactuamos tienen miradas v\u00e1lidas del mundo.
