Many stories of photographers or people related to photography begin with childhood memories of playing with cameras. Others have less romantic beginnings. Zully Sotelo says that photography was one of the subjects that frustrated her the most when she studied fine arts. The training focused on analog photography when she was a student, and Zully felt that everything went wrong. Then she decided to specialize in photography and, although she was no longer concerned about perfect photos, she could not find herself in the genres and internal boundaries of photography.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While searching for definitions, Zully went through several collectives and organizations. She participated in the <\/span>Incubadora <\/span><\/a>de Fotolibros de Hydra+fotograf\u00eda program with professors such as Ram\u00f3n Reverte, Ana Casas Broda, Laia Abril or Gonzalo Golpe and with authors such as Nelson Morales, Santiago Escobar-Jaramillo, Diego Moreno or Jos\u00e9 Luis Cuevas. Little by little, she found an exciting place in managing projects to show what is happening in photography. Thus began <\/span>Aqu\u00ed y All\u00e1<\/span><\/a><\/em>, a project that defines itself as: “an organization, a platform, a parallel universe that goes from one place to another generating collaborative projects and dynamics around photography.” <\/span><\/p>\n

How did Aqu\u00ed y All\u00ed<\/em> start?<\/b><\/p>\n

Aqu\u00ed y All\u00e1<\/em> was born in 2019. A little before I traveled to Argentina to get away from the local photographic guild, I wanted to disconnect. I felt I had a lot of passion for landing ideas, looking for people, connecting them, and doing things, but I was tired of working in society. I have been participating since 2016 in the Editorial Encounters of the ArtBo art fair representing<\/span> AMC<\/span><\/a> (Archive of Modern Conflict) , an English publisher of photobooks that I met in Mexico. When I returned from my trip they called me to invite me to participate with the books we had published with Croma Editorial. Still, instead of participating with just a few titles, I proposed to set up the table with several self-published photobooks or published by independent publishers. At that time, I knew of many people who were publishing their photobooks in Colombia but did not have a publisher or a distributor to represent them.<\/span><\/p>\n

That was the origin of Aqu\u00ed y All\u00e1<\/em>, which, in principle, was a short name I chose to participate in that fair and to disassociate myself from processes\/projects in which I had participated before. But it’s also a play on words that represents my experience of searching and experimenting in one place and another.<\/span><\/p>\n

So, is this a photobook dissemination project?<\/b><\/p>\n

We also make photo books, but we are not in a hurry to publish them. At the ArtBo Editorial Encounters, I began to understand publishing and the editorial field differently, which made me reflect on the dynamics of dissemination and socialization of photobooks within the Colombian photographic guild. There is a vital component of the photobook, and it is that people generally believe that it is to make, publish, and that’s it. Still, after that chain of creation, there is the distribution, selling it, moving it, putting it to participate in fairs… Many authors do not get there.<\/span><\/p>\n

Since its creation, Aqu\u00ed y All\u00e1 has participated in book fairs such as Singapore Art Book Fair, Macizo, La Vuelta, and ArtBo. We have been invited to talk at PUB Sandberg- Amsterdam, Bronx Documentary Center-New York, and the Museo Miguel Angel Urrutia (MaMu)- in Bogota. We have also distributed books by Colombian authors to book stores such as NADA, M\u00e1s All\u00e1 in Puebla, and La Hydra in Mexico City.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to disseminating, selling, and making photo books, we have created workshops with the participation of authors, designers, and artists such as Juan Orrantia, Eduardo Arias, Jos\u00e9 Ru\u00edz, and Arturo Salazar. With the latter two we recently collaborated in the Archive and Photobook Workshop “Un Supuesto Fotogr\u00e1fico” that accompanied the exhibition “Un Supuesto fotogr\u00e1fico, The Family of Man in Bogot\u00e1” curated by Ediciones R\u00e9plica at Espacio El Dorado.<\/span><\/p>\n

What would be the requirements for a photobook to be in Aqu\u00ed y all\u00e1?<\/b><\/p>\n

We look for projects around reflective, historical, and intimate discourses. Rigorous research and theory of the themes applied to the materialization of the book is a requirement that we find fascinating. I like to accompany authors who are not as well known or not yet established. We look for projects where we can nurture the processes and help them launch into the abyss.<\/span><\/p>\n

Some of the attendees of our workshops have already published their projects independently. This makes us very happy because they are like adopted children that we carry with affection from one place to another. “Where The Moon Is Vertical” by Laura Salazar, “The Largest Body After the Universe Itself” by Francisca Jim\u00e9nez, and “A Cloud Above Me” by Alejandra Ar\u00e9valo are some examples, and we hope more will come out.<\/span><\/p>\n

Cuando ella era estudiante la formaci\u00f3n se centraba en la fotograf\u00eda an\u00e1loga y Zully sent\u00eda que todo le sal\u00eda mal. Luego decidi\u00f3 hacer una especializaci\u00f3n en fotograf\u00eda y, aunque ya no se preocupaba por las fotos perfectas, no lograba encontrarse en los g\u00e9neros y fronteras internas de la foto. <\/span>\n\nEn el camino de la b\u00fasqueda por definiciones,  Zully pas\u00f3 por varios colectivos y organizaciones. Particip\u00f3 del programa <\/span>Incubadora<\/span><\/a> de Fotolibros de Hydra+fotograf\u00eda  de la mano de profesores como Ram\u00f3n Reverte, Ana Casas Broda, Laia Abril o Gonzalo Golpe y junto a autores  como Nelson Morales, Santiago Escobar- Jaramillo,  Diego Moreno o Jos\u00e9 Luis Cuevas. Poco a poco encontr\u00f3 un lugar interesante en la gesti\u00f3n de proyectos con la intenci\u00f3n de mostrar lo que est\u00e1 pasando en la fotograf\u00eda. Un poco antes viaj\u00e9 a Argentina con el prop\u00f3sito de alejarme del gremio fotogr\u00e1fico local, me quer\u00eda desconectar. Sent\u00eda que ten\u00eda mucha pasi\u00f3n por aterrizar ideas, buscar gente, conectarla y hacer cosas, pero estaba cansada de trabajar en sociedad. Yo llevaba desde el 2016 participando en los Encuentros Editoriales de  la feria de arte ArtBo representando a <\/span>AMC<\/span><\/a> (Archive of Modern Conflict) una editorial inglesa de fotolibros que conoc\u00ed en M\u00e9xico. Al regresar de mi viaje me llamaron para invitarme a participar con  los libros que hab\u00edamos publicado con Croma Editorial, pero en vez de participar s\u00f3lo con unos pocos t\u00edtulos les propuse disponer la mesa con varios fotolibros autopublicados o publicados por editoriales independientes. En ese momento yo sab\u00eda de un mont\u00f3n de gente que estaba publicando sus fotolibros en Colombia pero no ten\u00edan una editorial y tampoco una distribuidora que los representase.<\/span>\n\nAh\u00ed surgi\u00f3 Aqu\u00ed y All\u00e1 que, en principio, fue un nombre r\u00e1pido que escog\u00ed para participar en esa feria y para desligarme de procesos\/proyectos en los que hab\u00eda participado antes. En los Encuentros Editoriales de ArtBo empec\u00e9 a entender la publicaci\u00f3n y el campo editorial de otra manera y eso me hizo reflexionar sobre las din\u00e1micas de difusi\u00f3n y socializaci\u00f3n que se estaba haciendo de los fotolibros dentro del gremio fotogr\u00e1fico colombiano. Hay un componente muy importante del fotolibro y es que generalmente la gente cree que es hacer, publicar y listo; pero despu\u00e9s de esa cadena de creaci\u00f3n  est\u00e1 el distribuirlo, venderlo, moverlo, ponerlo a participar en ferias\u2026 Muchos autores no llegan hasta all\u00e1.<\/span>\n\nDesde su creaci\u00f3n Aqu\u00ed y All\u00e1 ha participado en ferias dedicadas al libro como Singapore Art Book Fair, Macizo, La Vuelta y  ArtBo. Hemos sido invitados a dar charlas en PUB Sandberg- Amsterdam, Bronx Documentary Center-New York  y el Museo Miguel \u00c1ngel Urrutia (MaMu)- en Bogot\u00e1. Tambi\u00e9n hemos distribuido  libros de autores colombianos a librer\u00edas como NADA, M\u00e1s All\u00e1 en Puebla y La Hydra en Ciudad de M\u00e9xico.<\/span>\n\nAdem\u00e1s de difundir, vender y hacer fotolibros hemos creado talleres con la participaci\u00f3n de autores, dise\u00f1adores y artistas como: Juan Orrantia, Eduardo Arias, Jos\u00e9 Ru\u00edz y Arturo Salazar.
