Taken from high above, with a drone’s eye, the image shows an extensive plantation on the Ecuadorian coast. Nothing would catch our attention if it weren’t for the fact that we can make out a little golden dot in the middle of all that intense green. See it?<\/span><\/p>\n

In a second photo of the same plantation, but this time taken very closely, we will know what it is: a vast banana plant plated in gold, the same coating used in the religious works of the colonial churches.<\/span><\/p>\n

The artist Mar\u00eda Jos\u00e9 Argenzio, author of this work, gave it an unusual name: <\/span>3\u00b0 16\u2032 0\u2033 S, 79\u00b0 58\u2032 0\u2033 W<\/span><\/a>. These are the coordinates of the site where that golden plant is located, some remote place in the coastal province of El Oro, in southern Ecuador, the country that exports the most bananas to the world. Argenzio’s gaze brings into play the two products that have been most exploited in his country: gold and bananas. But above all, it condenses, in a powerful gesture, the extraction processes that still cross our continent.<\/span><\/p>\n

Like this piece, the virtual exhibition <\/span>La Fiebre del Banano <\/span><\/i><\/a>(Banana Craze) gathers 100 works by Latin American artists around this fruit, from 1960 to the present. Colombian art historian and curator Juanita Solano says that, together with her colleague Blanca Sierra, she started this reflection thinking about “the role of fruits in the geopolitical relations between the global south and north, the construction of colonial realities that still remain, and the possibilities that a fruit like the banana offers to understand the recent history of Latin American nations.”\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Bananas are today the most consumed fruit on the planet. Its production reaches 116 million tons (enough to fill four million <\/span>containers<\/span><\/i>), and its export produces about 12 billion dollars yearly. It is not native to the Americas, but its cultivation is so widespread that it is the most widely produced fruit in Latin America and the Caribbean. Not surprisingly, since it began to be cultivated, the banana has been part of the global visual culture. In the Americas, its first representations date back to colonial times. And from the second half of the 20th century onwards, numerous artists from the continent began to reflect on the importance of this fruit in the global diet and its role in contemporary history.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hence, for Juanita Solano (who co-directs at the Universidad de Los Andes a research group on photography activating the <\/span>BADAC<\/span><\/a> archives and a study on women photographers, especially on the Frente Fotogr\u00e1fico, one of the first collectives of women photographers in her country), La Fiebre del Banano exposes through art the effects of the extensive cultivation of this plant: its environmental consequences, the relationships between producers, exporters, and consumers; but above all, the power of a simple fruit to reveal something of ourselves.<\/span><\/p>\n

You have a Ph.D. in art history from NYU and specialize in the history of photography. You have said that knowing the technique helped you to understand artistic processes and go beyond the vision of an ordinary spectator. How did that experience help you to think about the Banana Craze show?\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

When Blanca Serrano and I were finishing our doctorate, we began to do curatorial work on contemporary art. We applied to Cuchifritos, a space run by an artists’ collective at the Essex Street Market, the last original market in New York. We won the call and made <\/span>Bitter Bites,<\/span><\/i><\/a> an exhibition with the work of three artists, and in it, we talked about the relationship between the global south and the north based on migration and fruits.<\/span><\/p>\n

Then we realized we could focus on a single fruit and start exploring a big world. We chose the banana because of all the contemporary connotations it has. We made a list of works. We found a lot of them, and then the pandemic arrived. Blanca was in Spain, I was here in Colombia, and we realized that digital humanities could be an ideal medium to materialize our project.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We won a grant from the Universidad de Los Andes and began investigating. La Fiebre del Banano brings together 100 Latin American artworks in which the banana is the protagonist and articulates three cross-cutting themes: violence, environmental impacts, and the construction of identities. The idea of the project is that, by studying these works, we can understand how the massive cultivation of bananas contributed to the increase of social inequalities in Latin America, transformed ways of life, altered landscapes, and contributed to the configuration of xenophobic, racist and sexist stereotypes of its inhabitants. The exhibition provides a panoramic view of the presence of this fruit in contemporary art, considering several decades and numerous countries, as well as the artistic practices of the diaspora.<\/span><\/p>\n

The exhibition has three axes: identity, ecosystems, and violence. Why did you choose to classify the works according to these themes?<\/b><\/p>\n

Once we had a long list of works related to the banana, we began to see the common threads of those narratives, and we came up with these three major categories that encompass the pieces on our list, which also allowed us to make crossings between them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The category of violence is one of the broadest we have. Apparently, the banana is an innocuous and harmless fruit. Still, it has been the motive for many forms of violence exercised by foreign multinationals and corrupt states where banana enclaves have been established. There are differences in each context, but there are also patterns in how the crops were established.<\/span><\/p>\n

An exciting work to discuss this topic is Jose Alejandro Restrepo’s <\/span>Musa Paradisiaca<\/span><\/i><\/a>, in which he installs many bunches of green bananas on the gallery’s ceiling. At the tip of the banana blossom, he places video monitors on the floor with tiny mirrors that reflect the images that are being projected. The photos he chooses to launch are taken from the press and allude directly to the Colombian armed conflict, especially from the 1980s when the fight against drug trafficking increased. He establishes a relationship between this wave of violence generated by a plant with the first wave of violence of the first half of the twentieth century, appealing directly to the massacre of the banana plantations.<\/span><\/p>\n

In a world increasingly plagued by the climate crisis, talking about ecosystems through art is urgent. What kind of works did you include in that section?<\/b><\/p>\n

The works there explore the environmental impact of banana monoculture in Latin America and the Caribbean and address issues such as the landscape transformation, the health hazards associated with plantation work, and the symbolic place of bananas in the realm of visual culture. There we have the work of Mar\u00eda Jos\u00e9 Argenzio, <\/span>3\u00b0 16\u2032 0\u2033 S, 79\u00b0 58\u2032 0\u2033 W,<\/span><\/i> whose title is a geographical position. She coated a banana plant in El Oro province, southern Ecuador, with the gold plating technique and made two images: one in zenithal, where you see the little golden dot in the middle of a plantation, and in the other, you know the golden plant at ground level.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Maria Jos\u00e9 plays with Ecuador’s two major extractive products, which have been gold and now bananas, and ironically with the name of the province called El Oro. She brings to the table the magnitude and importance of today’s banana economy, an industry that needs a lot of regulations, especially labor regulations.<\/span><\/p>\n

Banana exploitation has also shaped our identity as Latin Americans to this day. How did you work on this idea in the exhibition?<\/b><\/p>\n

\u00a0We have tried to reflect on national, cultural, labor, racial and sexual identities. The banana has been a national symbol and a figure used to speak pejoratively and racially denigrate people from the so-called “banana republics.” Here we are also talking about xenophobia, racism, and sexism.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0There is a term used in the United States to refer to Dominicans and, in general, to Caribbean migrants: ‘plantain.’ That is one of how it is evident how fruit and food, in general, have been a tool to designate identities in a xenophobic and racist way. One of the works that address this is, for example, <\/span>Bananhattan<\/span><\/i><\/a> by Yunior Chiqui Mendoza. Yunior makes a map of Manhattan Island, playing with the appellation ‘The Big Apple,’ but this time, he transforms the figure into that of a banana. He puts the background in yellow and in black as if they were the spots of the banana, the places inhabited by the Dominican communities.<\/span><\/p>\n

In terms of sexism, the phallic shape of the banana has been very provocative. Women have been sexualized by the gesture of holding a banana and eating it. Many artists have reversed that image and have played with it. One is Victoria Cabezas, a Costa Rican artist who migrated to the United States in the seventies. When she came to study art, Victoria realized that people established a direct relationship between Costa Rica and bananas. She begins an investigation and starts understanding all the pejorative readings around bananas and banana republics. Then, she seeks to reverse these readings through his works. Among the many of her works, one is a soft, plush banana, playing with the idea of the sex toy but also turning something that is hard by nature into a delicate object and that is, in some way, feminized, infantilized. <\/span>En el Bosque<\/span><\/i><\/a>, she takes that giant banana and takes some pictures of a man dressed in a jacket and tie in a forest, touched by that big plush banana.<\/span><\/p>\n

What was the role of digital humanities in the creation of this project?<\/b><\/p>\n

They were an incredible tool because they allowed us to write longer texts. It is no longer an exhibition that was over after three months, and the platform also allowed us to play with the diversity of reading layers that artworks have.<\/span><\/p>\n

Many times what happens in exhibitions is that by fitting them into an axis, one directs the viewer’s reading to some extent. The advantage of the digital format is that people can expand these reading possibilities, and artists can place the same work in two different categories. We also made a chronology, stimulating the reader’s active role in the interpretation and allowing users to create their narratives and readings.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This year we will make the first physical exhibition, which will be small, but we will be delighted. The exhibition space will be the Centre for Visual Arts at the University of Denver. This university serves a substantial Hispanic population, and many students have food security issues. It’s a long-distance curatorship. Nine works are going there, and one not yet on the page is the <\/span>Coquitos<\/span><\/a> projection by Forensic Architecture and the Comisi\u00f3n de la Verdad (Truth Commission).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Son las coordenadas del sitio donde se ubica aquella planta dorada, alg\u00fan lugar remoto de la provincia costera de El Oro, al sur del Ecuador, el pa\u00eds que m\u00e1s banano exporta al mundo. La mirada de Argenzio pone en juego los dos productos que m\u00e1s se han explotado en su pa\u00eds: el oro y el banano. Pero sobre todo condensa, en un gesto poderoso, los procesos de extracci\u00f3n que a\u00fan atraviesan nuestro continente.<\/span><\/span>\n\nComo esta pieza, la exposici\u00f3n<\/span> virtual <\/span>La fiebre del banano<\/span><\/i><\/a> (<\/span>Banana Craze<\/span><\/i>) re\u00fane 100 obras de artistas latinoamericanxs alrededor de esta fruta, desde 1960 hasta el presente. La historiadora del arte y curadora colombiana Juanita Solano cuenta que, junto su colega Blanca Serrano, inici\u00f3 esta reflexi\u00f3n pensando en \u201cel papel de las frutas en las relaciones geopol\u00edticas entre el sur y el norte global, la construcci\u00f3n de realidades coloniales que a\u00fan se mantienen y las posibilidades que una fruta como el banano ofrece para entender la historia reciente de las naciones de Am\u00e9rica Latina\u201d. <\/span><\/span>\n\nEl banano es hoy en d\u00eda la fruta m\u00e1s consumida del planeta. Su producci\u00f3n alcanza los 116 millones de toneladas (suficiente para llenar cuatro millones de containers<\/em>) y su exportaci\u00f3n produce unos 12 billones de d\u00f3lares cada a\u00f1o. No es una planta nativa de Am\u00e9rica, pero su cultivo est\u00e1 tan extendido que es la fruta m\u00e1s producida en Am\u00e9rica Latina y el Caribe. No sorprende por eso que, desde que empez\u00f3 a cultivarse, el banano ha sido parte de la cultura visual global. En Am\u00e9rica, sus primeras representaciones se remontan a la Colonia. Has contado que conocer la t\u00e9cnica te ayud\u00f3 a entender los procesos art\u00edsticos e ir m\u00e1s all\u00e1 de la visi\u00f3n de un espectador com\u00fan. \u00bfC\u00f3mo te ayud\u00f3 esa experiencia para pensar la muestra <\/b>Banana Craze<\/i><\/b>? <\/b><\/span>\n\nCuando Blanca Serrano y yo termin\u00e1bamos el doctorado, empezamos a hacer curadur\u00edas sobre arte contempor\u00e1neo. Nos presentamos a una convocatoria de Cuchifritos, un espacio manejado por un colectivo de artistas en el Essex Street Market, el \u00faltimo mercado original de Nueva York. Ganamos la  convocatoria e hicimos<\/span> Bitter Bites<\/span><\/i><\/a>, una exposici\u00f3n con la obra de tres artistas y en ella habl\u00e1bamos de las relaciones entre el sur global y el norte a partir de la migraci\u00f3n y a trav\u00e9s de las frutas.<\/span><\/span>\n\nEntonces nos dimos cuenta de que pod\u00edamos enfocarnos en una sola fruta y empezar a explorar un mundo gigante. Elegimos el banano por todas las connotaciones contempor\u00e1neas que tiene. Hicimos una lista de obras. Encontramos much\u00edsimas y en esas lleg\u00f3 la pandemia. Blanca estaba en Espa\u00f1a, yo ac\u00e1 en Colombia y nos dimos cuenta de que las humanidades digitales pod\u00edan ser un medio ideal para materializar nuestro proyecto. <\/span>\n\nGanamos una beca de la Universidad de Los Andes y nos pusimos a investigar. La fiebre del banano re\u00fane 100 obras de arte latinoamericano en las que el banano es el protagonista y articula tres temas transversales: violencias, impactos medioambientales y construcci\u00f3n de identidades. La idea del proyecto es que, estudiar estas obras, nos permite comprender c\u00f3mo el cultivo masivo del banano contribuy\u00f3 al aumento de las desigualdades sociales en Am\u00e9rica Latina, transform\u00f3 formas de vida, alter\u00f3 paisajes y aport\u00f3 a la configuraci\u00f3n de estereotipos xen\u00f3fobos, racistas y sexistas de sus habitantes. Aparentemente, el banano es una fruta inocua e inofensiva, pero ha sido el motivo de muchas formas de violencias ejercidas por las multinacionales extranjeras y los Estados corruptos en donde se establecieron los enclaves bananeros. Hay diferencias en cada contexto, pero tambi\u00e9n hay unos patrones en las formas en que fueron establecidos los cultivos.<\/span>\n\nUna obra interesante para hablar de este tema es <\/span>Musa paradisiaca<\/span><\/i><\/a> de Jos\u00e9 Alejandro Restrepo, en la que instala muchos racimos de pl\u00e1tano verde en el techo de la galer\u00eda. En la punta de la flor del banano pone unos monitores de video que en el piso tienen unos peque\u00f1os espejos que reflejan las im\u00e1genes que est\u00e1n siendo proyectadas. Ah\u00ed tenemos la obra de Mar\u00eda Jos\u00e9 Argenzio, <\/span>3\u00b0 16\u2032 0\u2033 S, 79\u00b0 58\u2032 0\u2033 W,<\/span><\/i> cuyo t\u00edtulo es una posici\u00f3n geogr\u00e1fica. Ella recubri\u00f3 una planta de banano en la provincia El Oro, al sur del Ecuador, con la t\u00e9cnica de enchapado en oro, e hizo dos im\u00e1genes: una en cenital, donde se ve el puntito dorado en medio de una plantaci\u00f3n, y en la otra se ve la planta totalmente dorada a nivel del piso. <\/span>\n\nMaria Jos\u00e9 juega con los dos mayores productos de extracci\u00f3n del Ecuador que han sido el oro y ahora el banano, e ironiza con el nombre de la provincia que se llama El Oro. Ella pone sobre la mesa la magnitud y la importancia de la econom\u00eda bananera hoy, una industria que necesita un mont\u00f3n de regulaciones, sobre todo de tipo laboral.<\/span>\n

El banano ha sido un s\u00edmbolo nacional, pero tambi\u00e9n una figura usada para hablar de manera peyorativa y denigrar racialmente a personas originarias de las llamadas \u201crep\u00fablicas bananeras\u201d. Aqu\u00ed hablamos tambi\u00e9n de xenofobia, racismo y sexismo.<\/span>\n\nHay un t\u00e9rmino que se utiliza en Estados Unidos para referirse a los dominicanos y, en general, a los caribe\u00f1os migrantes: \u2018pl\u00e1tano\u2019. Esa es una de las maneras en que se evidencia c\u00f3mo una fruta y en general la comida ha sido una herramienta para designar identidades de forma xen\u00f3foba y racista. Una de las obras que aborda esto es, por ejemplo, <\/span>Bananhattan<\/span><\/i><\/a> de Yunior Chiqui Mendoza. Yunior hace un mapa de la Isla de Manhattan, jugando con el apelativo de \u2018la gran manzana\u2019, pero esta vez transforma la figura en la de un banano. Pone el fondo en amarillo, y en negro, como si fueran las manchas del banano, los lugares habitados por las comunidades dominicanas.<\/span>\n\nEn t\u00e9rminos de sexismo, pues evidentemente la forma f\u00e1lica del pl\u00e1tano ha sido muy provocadora. A las mujeres se les ha sexualizado mediante el gesto de sostener un banano y com\u00e9rselo. Muchas artistas han revertido esa imagen y han jugado con eso. Una de ellas, es Victoria Cabezas, una artista costarricense que migr\u00f3 a Estados Unidos en los setentas. Cuando llega a estudiar arte, Victoria se da cuenta de que la gente establece una relaci\u00f3n directa entre Costa Rica y los bananos. Inicia una investigaci\u00f3n y empieza a entender todas las lecturas peyorativas que hay alrededor del banano y las rep\u00fablicas bananeras. Entonces, busca revertir esas lecturas a partir de sus obras. Entre las muchas que tiene con bananos, hay una que es un banano suave, de felpa, jugando con la idea del juguete sexual, pero tambi\u00e9n convirtiendo algo que es duro por naturaleza en un objeto blando y que est\u00e1, de alguna manera, feminizado, infantilizado. Ya no es una exposici\u00f3n que se acababa a los tres meses, y la plataforma nos permit\u00eda jugar tambi\u00e9n con la multiplicidad de capas de lectura que tienen las obras de arte.<\/span>\n\nMuchas veces lo que sucede en las exposiciones es que al encajarlas en un eje, en alguna medida, uno dirige la lectura del espectador. La ventaja del formato digital es que se pueden ampliar esas posibilidades de lectura y se puede ubicar una misma obra en dos categor\u00edas diferentes. Hicimos tambi\u00e9n una cronolog\u00eda estimulando en el lector un papel m\u00e1s activo en la interpretaci\u00f3n, permitiendo a los usuarios crear sus propias narrativas y lecturas. <\/span>\n\nEste a\u00f1o vamos a hacer la primera exposici\u00f3n f\u00edsica, va a ser peque\u00f1a, pero estamos muy contentas. El espacio de exhibici\u00f3n ser\u00e1 el Centre for Visual Arts, en la Universidad de Denver. Esta universidad sirve y atiende a una poblaci\u00f3n hispana enorme, y hay muchos estudiantes con problemas de seguridad alimentaria. Es una curadur\u00eda a larga distancia.
