Are all their uses sacred?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the first episode of the second season of &#8216;Jardines y Laberintos&#8217;, we talk to Antonella Fagetti, professor and researcher at the Institute of Social Sciences and Humanities of the Benem\u00e9rita Universidad Aut\u00f3noma de Puebla. Since 2002, Fagetti has developed several projects on traditional medicine and shamanism and has published books and articles on these topics: the volume Shamanic Initiations. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Los sue\u00f1os y el trance en el devenir del cham\u00e1n<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (Siglo XXI Editores, 2015). She is also the director of the documentary <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/12772176\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Chamanes: una tetralog\u00eda sobre el chamanismo en M\u00e9xico <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(2007) and co-director with Otila Mar\u00eda Caballero of the documentary <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0AwN5861PRw\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">La iniciaci\u00f3n del Haaco Cama. El Shamanismo Comcaac<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (2015).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Mexican researcher explained that the sacred character of plants such as peyote -used by several peoples of northern Mexico- has to do with the fact that they allow the revelation of divine entities. &#8220;In the 1980s, a term was coined to name these plants: &#8216;entheogen,&#8217; to reveal the god within. It was proposed by a group of scientists to distinguish it from terms like &#8216;psychedelic&#8217; or &#8216;psychotomimetic,&#8217; and to highlight the role of plants in revealing god.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Fagetti also explained that using sacred plants in the traditional medicine of Latin American indigenous peoples has &#8220;an exact purpose: for example, to obtain an answer to something that worries the person or makes them sick.&#8221; However, these uses began to be lost with the continent&#8217;s colonization: the European presence had &#8220;two effects on the use of sacred plants: one, that many peoples abandoned these practices, and the other, that many peoples hid them.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The anthropologist stresses, however, that the beneficial effects of these plants justify their use in other contexts. &#8220;There is talk of a spiritual component that we all have: we can think not so much if we have a spirit, but we have emotions and spirituality. Traditional medicine can bring us closer to this part of our being.&#8221; For this reason, Fagetti considers that &#8220;we should all have access to them. But we must regulate their use and know their ritual uses very well. They are plants that can cure you but also harm you if they are not used with all the caution required. style=\"font-weight: 400\">En el primer episodio de la segunda temporada de \u2018Jardines y Laberintos\u2019, conversamos con Antonella Fagetti, profesora e investigadora adscrita al Instituto de Ciencias Sociales y Humanidades de la Benem\u00e9rita Universidad Aut\u00f3noma de Puebla. Desde 2002, Fagetti ha desarrollado varios proyectos sobre medicina tradicional y chamanismo, y ha publicado libros y art\u00edculos sobre estos temas: entre ellos, el volumen <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Iniciaciones cham\u00e1nicas. Los sue\u00f1os y el trance en el devenir del cham\u00e1n<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (Siglo XXI Editores, 2015). Es adem\u00e1s directora del documental <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/12772176\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Chamanes. Una tetralog\u00eda sobre el chamanismo en M\u00e9xico<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (2007) y codirectora con Otila Mar\u00eda Caballero del documental <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0AwN5861PRw\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">La iniciaci\u00f3n del haaco cama. El chamanismo comcaac<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (2015).&nbsp;<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">La investigadora mexicana explic\u00f3 que el car\u00e1cter sagrado de plantas como el peyote \u2014usado por varios pueblos del norte de M\u00e9xico\u2014 tiene que ver con que permiten la revelaci\u00f3n de entidades divinas. \u201cEn los a\u00f1os 80 se acu\u00f1\u00f3 un t\u00e9rmino para denominar a estas plantas: \u2018ente\u00f3geno\u2019, revelar el dios adentro. Fue propuesto por un grupo de cient\u00edficos para distinguirlo de t\u00e9rminos como \u2018psicod\u00e9lico\u2019 o \u2018psicotomim\u00e9tico\u2019, y resaltar ese papel de las plantas de revelar a dios\u201d.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Fagetti tambi\u00e9n explic\u00f3 que el uso de las plantas sagradas en la medicina tradicional de los pueblos ind\u00edgenas latinoamericanos tiene \u201cun fin muy preciso: por ejemplo, obtener una respuesta a algo que inquieta a la persona o que la tiene enferma\u201d. Sin embargo, estos usos empezaron a perderse con la colonizaci\u00f3n del continente: la presencia europea tuvo \u201cdos efectos sobre el uso de plantas sagradas: uno, que muchos pueblos abandonaron estas pr\u00e1cticas, y el otro, que muchos pueblos las ocultaron\u201d.<\/span>\n\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">La antrop\u00f3loga incide, no obstante, en que los efectos ben\u00e9ficos de estas plantas justifican su uso en otros contextos. \u201cSe habla de un componente espiritual que todos tenemos: podemos pensar no tanto si tenemos un esp\u00edritu o no, pero tenemos emociones, tenemos una espiritualidad. La medicina tradicional puede acercarnos a esta parte de nuestro ser\u201d. Por esa raz\u00f3n, Fagetti considera que \u201cdeber\u00edamos todos tener acceso a ellas. Pero para eso hay que reglamentar su uso y conocer muy bien cu\u00e1les son sus usos rituales. Son plantas que te pueden curar pero tambi\u00e9n te pueden da\u00f1ar si no son utilizadas con toda la cautela que se requiere.
