Can we hold a photography workshop on a moving train? During the last Argentine Biennial of Documentary Photography, it was possible. “La Estrella del Norte – Cosmovisiones en Movimiento,” a workshop led by photographers Sara Wayra and Federico Estol, took place on the express train that runs between Buenos Aires and Tucum\u00e1n. Gathered 50 participants who told stories of the journey in photos, videos, posters, and interviews with passengers.<\/span><\/p>\n

“The Biennial gave us the ingredients, and we put together the whole recipe,” says Bolivian photographer Sara Wayra about the invitation she received for the tenth edition of the Argentine Biennial of Documentary Photography. Those ingredients included: a train, a 36-hour trip, and the journey between Buenos Aires and Tucum\u00e1n in northern Argentina. With these elements, and inspired by the workshops of the Mas Uno<\/em> collective in Colombia, Sara Wayra and Uruguayan Federico Estol designed a workshop for 50 people called “La Estrella del Norte – Cosmovisiones en Movimiento” (The North Star – Cosmovisions in movement).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The first part of the name of this workshop, whose format is entirely original, is inspired by the mythical train E<\/em><\/span>strella del Norte<\/span><\/i> that, since 1914, was used by the workers making the route from Tucum\u00e1n to Buenos Aires. In the 56,210 trips it made, the train traveled 64,978,760 kilometers and carried 84,315,000 passengers: more than three times the population of Argentina until 1980. It is an icon in the world of famous long-distance trains. The line was canceled in 1993, but the railroad company still runs two weekly services to Tucum\u00e1n, stopping at six of the 18 stations that the Estrella del Norte used to connect.<\/span><\/p>\n

The workshop proposed to tell narratives under the slogan “cosmovisions in movement.” Sara and Federico had as an accomplice, companion, and collaborator the Argentine photographer Gianni Bulacio, and among the participants were Andr\u00e9s Caicedo, Jorge Piccini, and Luciana Demichelis. The participants -not only those registered but also several passengers- were divided into groups to create four types of material: a video art or experimental documentary on the movement, the journey, and the trajectory; a story with 20 images based on one of the cross-cutting themes: gender, territory, cosmovision, memory and migration; a poster of a train movie; and interviewing passengers on one of the themes.<\/span><\/p>\n

For Sara Wayra, the proposal for the participants was to imagine the train “as a living body in movement, a body that dreams, that has an identity, that belongs and moves within a territory .” Federico Estol thought it was also vital to revitalize the idea of the train trip, to recognize its human facet in the micro-stories of each passenger. And above all, they were interested in knowing and showing this particular train’s stories since it is very close to the people. “The passengers are from trendy backgrounds,” says Estol, “it is very cheap to travel on the train, but the people who were with us had a hard time getting to buy that ticket.”\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Taking advantage of the journey, the changes in the landscape, and the possibility of meeting so many people, the workshop also proposed thinking about the five cross-cutting themes from the perspectives of the train passengers. The idea was to get out of “urbanity and city privilege.”\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It was an intense and demanding workshop: during the 36-hour trip, the groups had specific times to complete the tasks and to participate in editing tables. They all managed to deliver the edited materials and have them ready to exhibit the results at the Biennial. Not all the participants were photographers, in some cases, they were writers or journalists; which gave a different tone to the results.<\/span><\/p>\n

The workshop detonated collective creative forces, mobilizing stories and generating links between the participants and the passengers. Several participants are still in contact and want to make a second chapter of what they started. One of the results that will soon see the light of day will be a photo book in which all the stories created will be collected. Sara Wayra sums up the experience in one sentence: “It was incredible to see the results, but above all, the friendship and the complementarity that existed between us.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Esos ingredientes inclu\u00edan: un tren, 36 horas de viaje y el recorrido entre Buenos Aires y Tucum\u00e1n, al norte del pa\u00eds. Con esos elementos, e inspirados en los talleres del colectivo Mas Uno de Colombia, Sara Wayra y el uruguayo Federico Estol dise\u00f1aron un taller para 50 personas al que llamaron \u201cLa Estrella del Norte - Cosmovisiones en movimiento\u201d. <\/span>\n\nLa primera parte del nombre de este taller, cuyo formato es bastante original, est\u00e1 inspirada en el m\u00edtico tren Estrella del Norte que, desde 1914, usaban los trabajadores hac\u00edan la ruta de Tucum\u00e1n a Buenos Aires. En los 56.210 viajes que realiz\u00f3, el tren recorri\u00f3 64.978.760 kil\u00f3metros y traslad\u00f3 a 84.315.000 pasajeros: m\u00e1s de tres veces la poblaci\u00f3n de Argentina hasta 1980. Se trata de un \u00edcono en el mundo de los famosos trenes de larga distancia. Sara y Federico tuvieron como c\u00f3mplice, acompa\u00f1ante y colaborador al fot\u00f3grafo argentino Gianni Bulacio y entre las personas que participaron estaban Andr\u00e9s Caicedo, Jorge Piccini y Luciana Demichelis. Los participantes -no solo los inscritos, sino tambi\u00e9n varios pasajeros- se dividieron en grupos para crear cuatro tipos de materiales: un video arte o documental experimental sobre el movimiento, el viaje y la trayectoria; una historia con 20 im\u00e1genes a partir de uno de los temas transversales: g\u00e9nero, territorio, cosmovisi\u00f3n, memoria y migraci\u00f3n; un afiche de una pel\u00edcula de trenes; y entrevistar a los pasajeros sobre alguna de las tem\u00e1ticas.<\/span>\n\nEn palabras de Sara Wayra la propuesta para lxs participantes fue imaginar el tren \u201ccomo un cuerpo vivo y en movimiento, un cuerpo que sue\u00f1a, que tiene identidad, que pertenece y se mueve dentro de un territorio\u201d. Para Federico Estol, tambi\u00e9n era muy importante revitalizar la idea del viaje en el tren, reconocer su faceta humana en las microhistorias de cada pasajero. La idea era salir de \u201cla urbanidad y el privilegio citadino\u201d. <\/span>\n\nFue un taller intenso y exigente: en las 36 horas de viaje, los grupos ten\u00edan tiempos espec\u00edficos para ir cumpliendo con las tareas y para participar en mesas de edici\u00f3n. Todos lograron entregar los materiales editados y tenerlos listos para exponer los resultados en la Bienal. No todos los participantes eran fot\u00f3grafos, en algunos casos eran escritores o periodistas y eso le dio otro tono a los resultados. <\/span>\n\nEl taller logr\u00f3 detonar fuerzas creativas colectivas, movilizar historias y generar v\u00ednculos entre los participantes y los pasajeros.  Varios de los participantes siguen en contacto, quieren hacer un segundo cap\u00edtulo de lo que iniciaron. Uno de los resultados que pronto ver\u00e1 la luz ser\u00e1 un fotolibro en el que se recojan todas las historias creadas. Sara Wayra resume la experiencia en una frase: \u201cFue incre\u00edble ver los resultados, pero sobre todo es incre\u00edble la amistad y la complementaci\u00f3n que hubo como entre
