A testimony of cultural and social changes over the last 50 years in S\u00e3o Paulo, Brazil.<\/span><\/p>\n

As the couple themselves recount, Carlos Rapos\u00e3o and Hulda Apfel had their destinies shaped even in the maternity ward. Both were born in the same S\u00e3o Paulo Hospital, in the city center; he was born in 1960, and she in 1963. Friends since childhood and later sweethearts, they grew up as neighbors in the far southwest of S\u00e3o Paulo, in the metropolitan region of Francisco Morato. In another coincidence, Rapos\u00e3o and Hulda come from traditional families, children of police officers who became agents of the military dictatorship that took hold in the country during their childhood and persisted until the couple’s youth (1964 – 1985). They married early because their families demanded it. “Her father asked me, crying,” says Rapos\u00e3o, opening the gate of the single-story house where they have lived since the 1980s on a narrow street in Jardim Arpoador.<\/p>\n

A vintage motorhome parked in front immediately catches the eye. The vehicle was entirely restored by Rapos\u00e3o, a slender guy with small, bright eyes, who becomes your friend even before introducing you to the chaotic and pulsating garden at the back of the residence. He worked as a school van driver and instructor, took the family camping, and even lived at the beach. He overcame depression. He looks at his wife Hulda with affection. The kind that complains with a smile.<\/p>\n

In the house, the constant soundtrack is orchestrated by two guinea fowls, three cats, and three dogs that move between the living room and the yard vying for attention. Hulda shares gossip about the neighborhood while serving coffee. She, who was a telephone operator for almost 20 years, is a lady with a sweet voice, smiles, and generous hugs that fill the space around her with satire and much matriarchal wisdom. She talks about her children, talks about her grandson, explains the dirty dishes in the sink, connects facts and comments. She responds to Rapos\u00e3o’s gaze with affection. The youthful love between them is beautiful.<\/p>\n

The interview was about marijuana, but with each question, the conversation was diverted by the couple’s experiences over the past decades, which are memories of the city itself. “On the day of our wedding, in September 1981, the first major traffic jam in S\u00e3o Paulo occurred. At that time, there was not this traffic like today. It was the inauguration of Shopping Eldorado, one of the first, and the bridge got stuck with so many cars. I arrived late to my own wedding at Largo da Batata and even forgot my bouquet; my aunt had to improvise with flowers she stole from the church,” Hulda says, laughing. She shows the sepia photo album displaying the happiness of the young couple, analyzing the female looks with short hair and aggressive shoulder pads and men wearing bell-bottom pants and mullets in Mick Jagger cosplays. “She died,” Rapos\u00e3o interrupts, pointing to a beautiful, smiling blonde woman in several photos. “She was our friend. She tried cocaine once and never stopped. She was murdered over a debt of 10 cruzeiros of powder in a dispute in the favela. The “bridge” mentioned by Hulda is not a mere detail but an important marker of class and mobility in S\u00e3o Paulo’s urban geography, whose expanded center is located between the two marginal roads that follow the two main rivers crossing the city. The center and the outskirts of the immense metropolis are connected by dozens of bridges and viaducts over the dark and foul-smelling waters of the Pinheiros and Tiet\u00ea rivers, so polluted and channeled that they resemble sewers. In S\u00e3o Paulo, the land of skyscrapers, those who live “on the other side of the bridge,” like Hulda and Rapos\u00e3o, live with precarious urban infrastructure, overt structural racism, limited access to the city, and especially, the criminalization of poverty, stigma, armed violence, lack of assistance, and police brutality associated with the war on drugs.<\/p>\n

Users since adolescence, the couple says that initially, their thing was alcohol. Hulda lights a cigarette and explains, “We had a little bar at home with various types of drinks and liked to throw parties. We lived drunk and arguing, it didn’t work out. We started smoking more marijuana and drinking less, and our fights changed. We argue while laughing; the conversation flows more smoothly. We became pot smokers. In fact, here’s my advice for couples with relationship problems: marijuana helps a lot.” At the time, they dealt with strong prejudice both inside and outside the home. “My father was a policeman, a public safety agent. He proudly kept a newspaper clipping of an arrest he made of a guy with a suitcase full of marijuana at Esta\u00e7\u00e3o da Luz during the dictatorship. Imagine the tension of having a daughter who smokes weed!” Hulda recounts.<\/p>\n

What began as adult therapeutic use that improved the couple’s relationship and reduced their alcohol consumption turned, decades later, into a political fight for legalization. A serious error by the criminal justice system directly affected the family when, in 2011, their son Dimitri, then 22 years old, was wrongly arrested on charges of theft. Hulda knew her son was innocent because he had a toothache and had spent the night of the crime at home with her. “We were still lying down; the police arrived early in the morning and took Dimitri based solely on a statement from another accused. The family believed that Dimi, as he is affectionately called, would be released soon because it was impossible to prove his involvement in the robbery. However, they found themselves victims of the slowness and inefficiency of the Brazilian justice system. “It was three years of a nightmare: it took me months to understand how the system worked and learn how to prepare the ‘jumbo’ (a kit of food and personal hygiene items taken by family members to incarcerated individuals). We lost a lot of time and money with bad and opportunistic lawyers. This almost broke our family,” Hulda confesses. “My son was transferred to a prison in the interior, I had to travel and still go through humiliating and shameful searches at every visit. In the end, I couldn’t take it anymore.” Dimitri was released on parole and faced the trial at liberty until the case was closed due to lack of evidence. Subsequently, Dimi dedicated himself to establishing a new occupation of popular housing right there in Jardim Arpoador, the family’s neighborhood. “They built this street; the community’s name is Pelourinho,” Rapos\u00e3o indicates, smiling again.<\/p>\n

Before being incarcerated, Dimi was already an activist for the Marcha da Maconha S\u00e3o Paulo, an autonomous social movement that has been organizing street protests since 2008 for the legalization of the plant and an end to the war on drugs. “After Dimi was arrested, we started participating in the event on Avenida Paulista to honor our son’s name and struggle,” says Hulda. Since then, the couple has become emblematic in the movement, even organizing the regional nucleus of the southwest zone. Hulda asserts that she had only felt such strength and hope for change when she engaged in the popular mobilization for “Diretas J\u00e1!” at the end of the military dictatorship. Rapos\u00e3o has taken on the role of the “guardian” of the Legalize banner, a historical archive of the Marcha da Maconha S\u00e3o Paulo. In its last edition, held in June 2023, the March brought together more than 70,000 people on the streets of the S\u00e3o Paulo capital.<\/p>\n

Learning about the trajectory of this traditional Brazilian family that went through the military dictatorship, the explosion of armed violence, the trauma of imprisonment, the Covid-19 pandemic, and Bolsonarism in a polluted and cruel city and still finds strength to fight for the legalization and memory of those affected by drug prohibition shows that the war continues, but as far as Hulda and Rapos\u00e3o are concerned, love has already won.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

destinos marcados desde peque\u00f1os. Ambos nacieron en el Hospital S\u00e3o Paulo, en el centro de la ciudad; \u00e9l en 1960 y ella en 1963. Amigos desde la infancia y luego novios, crecieron como vecinos en el extremo suroeste de S\u00e3o Paulo, en la regi\u00f3n metropolitana de Francisco Morato. Por coincidencia, Rapos\u00e3o y Hulda provienen de familias tradicionales, son hijos de polic\u00edas que fueron agentes de la dictadura militar brasile\u00f1a entre 1965 y 1985. Se casaron j\u00f3venes debido a la presi\u00f3n de sus familias: \"El padre de ella me lo pidi\u00f3 entre l\u00e1grimas\", cuenta Rapos\u00e3o, mientras abre la puerta de la casa donde han vivido desde la d\u00e9cada de 1980, en una calle estrecha del Jardim Arpoador. <\/span>\n\nUn veh\u00edculo recreativo y antiguo, estacionado frente a la casa, llama la atenci\u00f3n de inmediato. Fue completamente restaurado de forma artesanal por Rapos\u00e3o, un hombre delgado con ojos peque\u00f1os y brillantes que puede convertirse en tu amigo antes de mostrarte el ca\u00f3tico y vibrante jard\u00edn detr\u00e1s de su casa. Trabaj\u00f3 como conductor de una furgoneta escolar e instructor; llev\u00f3 a su familia a acampar y vivir en la playa, super\u00f3 una depresi\u00f3n. Mira a su esposa Hulda con cari\u00f1o, es el tipo de persona que se queja con una sonrisa.<\/span>\n\nEn su casa se forma a diario una constante orquesta sonora compuesta por dos gallinas de Guinea, tres gatos y tres perros que se mueven entre la sala y el patio compitiendo por atenci\u00f3n. Hulda comparte chismes sobre los vecinos mientras sirve caf\u00e9. Ella, que fue telefonista durante casi 20 a\u00f1os, es una mujer de voz dulce, sonrisas y abrazos generosos, que llena el espacio a su alrededor con humor y sabidur\u00eda maternal. Habla de sus hijos, de su nieto, justifica la vajilla sucia en el fregadero, enlaza hechos y comentarios, responde con cari\u00f1o a la mirada de Rapos\u00e3o. En ese momento, el tr\u00e1fico no era como lo es hoy. Fue la inauguraci\u00f3n del Shopping Eldorado, uno de los primeros centros comerciales de la ciudad. El puente se atasc\u00f3 con tantos autos. Llegu\u00e9 tarde a mi propia boda en el<\/span> Largo da Batata<\/span><\/i> y hasta olvid\u00e9 mi ramo, mi t\u00eda tuvo que improvisar con flores que rob\u00f3 de la iglesia\", cuenta Hulda riendo, mientras muestra el \u00e1lbum de fotos sepia que reflejan la felicidad de la joven pareja, analizando los atuendos femeninos con cabellos cortos y hombreras llamativas, y el vestuario de los hombres con pantalones acampanados y mullets al estilo de Mick Jagger.<\/span>\n\n\"Ella muri\u00f3\", interrumpe Rapos\u00e3o, se\u00f1alando a una mujer rubia de unos 20 a\u00f1os que aparece hermosa y sonriente en varias fotos. \"Era nuestra amiga. Prob\u00f3 coca\u00edna una vez y nunca pudo dejarlo. La mataron por una deuda de 10 cruzeiros [moneda de la \u00e9poca] en un altercado en la favela. Una l\u00e1stima\".<\/span>\n\nEl puente mencionado por Hulda, del d\u00eda de su boda, no es un detalle menor, sino un importante marcador de clase y movilidad en la geograf\u00eda urbana de S\u00e3o Paulo, cuyo centro expandido se encuentra entre las dos v\u00edas marginales que siguen los dos principales r\u00edos que atraviesan la ciudad. El centro y las periferias de la inmensa metr\u00f3polis est\u00e1n conectados por docenas de puentes y viaductos sobre los oscuros y malolientes r\u00edos Pinheiros y Tiet\u00ea, tan contaminados que parecen m\u00e1s alcantarillas que r\u00edos. <\/span>\n\nEn S\u00e3o Paulo, tierra de rascacielos, quienes viven al otro lado del puente, como Hulda y Rapos\u00e3o, conviven con una infraestructura urbana precaria, un racismo estructural agresivo, un acceso limitado a la ciudad y, especialmente, la criminalizaci\u00f3n de la pobreza, el estigma, la violencia armada y la brutalidad policial asociada a la guerra contra las drogas.<\/span>\n\nAl ser consumidores desde la adolescencia, la pareja cuenta que, al principio, su \"viaje\" se basaba en el alcohol. Hulda enciende un cigarrillo y explica: <\/span>\n\n\"Ten\u00edamos un bar en casa con varios tipos de bebidas y nos gustaba hacer fiestas. Viv\u00edamos ebrios y discutiendo, no funcionaba. Empezamos a fumar marihuana y a beber menos, y nuestras peleas cambiaron. Ahora discutimos riendo, la conversaci\u00f3n fluye m\u00e1s tranquila. Nos convertimos en marihuaneros. De hecho, aqu\u00ed va un consejo para parejas con problemas: la marihuana ayuda mucho\". <\/span>\n\nSin embargo, en ese momento tuvieron que lidiar con un fuerte prejuicio dentro y fuera de casa. \"Mi padre era polic\u00eda, un agente de seguridad p\u00fablica. Hulda sab\u00eda que su hijo era inocente porque ten\u00eda un dolor de muelas y hab\u00eda pasado la noche del supuesto crimen en casa. \"A\u00fan est\u00e1bamos acostados cuando la polic\u00eda lleg\u00f3 temprano en la ma\u00f1ana y se llev\u00f3 a Dimitri, bas\u00e1ndose \u00fanicamente en el testimonio de otro acusado. No hubo conversaci\u00f3n\", cuenta Rapos\u00e3o, elevando el tono de voz y mostrando enojo por primera y \u00fanica vez en toda la entrevista.<\/span>\n\nLa familia pens\u00f3 que Dimi, como lo llaman cari\u00f1osamente, ser\u00eda liberado pronto porque era imposible demostrar su participaci\u00f3n en el robo. Sin embargo, terminaron siendo v\u00edctimas de la lentitud y la ineficiencia del sistema de justicia brasile\u00f1o. \"Pasaron tres a\u00f1os de pesadilla: me llev\u00f3 meses comprender c\u00f3mo funcionaba el sistema y aprender a preparar el 'jumbo' (un kit de alimentos e higiene personal llevado por familiares a personas encarceladas). Perdimos mucho tiempo y dinero con abogados malos y oportunistas. Esto casi destruye a nuestra familia\", confiesa Hulda. <\/span>\n\n\"Mi hijo fue trasladado a una prisi\u00f3n en el interior, yo ten\u00eda que viajar y someterme a registros humillantes y degradantes en cada visita. Al final, ya no pod\u00eda soportarlo\". <\/span>\n\nDimitri fue liberado bajo libertad condicional y enfrent\u00f3 el proceso hasta que el caso se cerr\u00f3 por falta de pruebas. Luego, Dimi se dedic\u00f3 a establecer una nueva ocupaci\u00f3n de viviendas populares en el mismo Jardim Arpoador, el barrio de su familia. \"Esta calle la construyeron ellos; la comunidad se llama Pelourinho\", se\u00f1ala Rapos\u00e3o, sonriendo nuevamente.<\/span>\n\nAntes de ser encarcelado, Dimi ya era un activista de la <\/span>Marcha da Maconha<\/span><\/i> de S\u00e3o Paulo, un movimiento social aut\u00f3nomo que realiza protestas en la calle desde 2008 en favor de la legalizaci\u00f3n de la planta de marihuana y el fin de la guerra contra las drogas. \"Despu\u00e9s de que Dimi fue arrestado, comenzamos a participar en la <\/span>marcha en la Avenida Paulista<\/span><\/a> para honrar el nombre y la lucha de nuestro hijo\", cuenta Hulda. <\/span>\n\nDesde entonces, la pareja se ha convertido en un s\u00edmbolo del movimiento, organizando el n\u00facleo regional de la zona suroeste. Hulda afirma que solo sinti\u00f3 tal fuerza y esperanza de cambio cuando se involucr\u00f3 en la movilizaci\u00f3n popular por las <\/span>Diretas J\u00e1!,<\/span><\/i> al final de la dictadura militar. Rapos\u00e3o asumi\u00f3 el papel de \"guardi\u00e1n\" de la hist\u00f3rica bandera \"Legalize\" de la <\/span>Marcha da Maconha<\/span><\/i> de S\u00e3o Paulo. Ambos foram paridos no mesmo Hospital S\u00e3o Paulo, centro da cidade; ele nasceu em 1960 e ela, em 1963. Amigos desde crian\u00e7a e depois namorados, cresceram vizinhos no extremo sudoeste de S\u00e3o Paulo, regi\u00e3o metropolitana de Francisco Morato. Em outra coincid\u00eancia, Rapos\u00e3o e Hulda s\u00e3o oriundos de fam\u00edlias tradicionais, filhos de policiais que se tornaram agentes da ditadura militar que se instalou no pa\u00eds na inf\u00e2ncia e perdurou at\u00e9 a juventude do casal (1964 - 1985). Casaram cedo porque as fam\u00edlias exigiram. \"O pai dela me pediu chorando\", conta Rapos\u00e3o, abrindo port\u00e3o da casa terrea em que moram desde a d\u00e9cada de 80 em uma rua estreita do Jardim Arpoador. <\/span>\n\nUm <\/span>motorhome<\/span><\/i> rel\u00edquia estacionado na frente chama logo a aten\u00e7\u00e3o. O ve\u00edculo foi todo restaurado artesanalmente por Rapos\u00e3o, um cara magro de olhos pequenos e brilhantes que vira seu amigo antes mesmo de apresentar o jardim ca\u00f3tico e pulsante nos fundos da resid\u00eancia. Ele trabalhou como motorista de van escolar e instrutor; levou a fam\u00edlia para acampar e at\u00e9 morar na praia. Superou uma depress\u00e3o. Olha para a esposa Hulda com afeto. Do tipo que reclama sorrindo. <\/span>\n\nNa casa, a trilha sonora constante \u00e9 orquestrada por duas galinhas d'angola, tr\u00eas gatos e tr\u00eas cachorros que circulam entre a sala e o quintal disputando aten\u00e7\u00e3o. Hulda partilha fofocas sobre a vizinhan\u00e7a enquanto serve o caf\u00e9. Ela, que foi telefonista por quase 20 anos, \u00e9 uma senhora de voz doce, sorrisos e abra\u00e7os generosos que preenche o espa\u00e7o ao seu redor com s\u00e1tiras e muita sabedoria matriarcal. Fala dos filhos, fala do neto, explica a lou\u00e7a suja na pia, emenda fatos e coment\u00e1rios. Responde o olhar de Rapos\u00e3o com afeto. \u00c9 bonito o amor juvenil entre eles.<\/span>\n\nA entrevista era sobre maconha, mas a cada pergunta a conversa era desviada por viv\u00eancias do casal nas \u00faltimas d\u00e9cadas e que s\u00e3o mem\u00f3rias da pr\u00f3pria cidade. \"No dia do nosso casamento, em setembro de 1981, ocorreu o primeiro grande congestionamento de S\u00e3o Paulo. Naquela \u00e9poca n\u00e3o tinha esse tr\u00e2nsito de hoje. Foi a inaugura\u00e7\u00e3o do Shopping Eldorado, um dos primeiros, e a ponte travou com tantos carros. Cheguei atrasada no meu pr\u00f3prio casamento no Largo da Batata e ainda esqueci meu buqu\u00ea, minha tia teve que improvisar com flores que roubou da igreja\", Hulda conta rindo. Ela mostra o \u00e1lbum de fotos s\u00e9pia estampando a felicidade do jovem casal, analisando os looks femininos de cabelos curtos e ombreiras agressivas e homens vestindo cal\u00e7as boca de sino e mullets em cosplays de Mick Jagger. \"Ela morreu\", interrompe Rapos\u00e3o, apontando uma mulher loira de 20 e poucos anos que aparece linda e sorridente em v\u00e1rias fotos. \"Era nossa amiga. Cheirou coca\u00edna uma vez e nunca mais parou. Foi assassinada por uma d\u00edvida de 10 cruzeiros de p\u00f3 em uma treta na favela. Uma pena\". <\/span>\n\nA \"ponte\" citada por Hulda n\u00e3o \u00e9 mero detalhe, mas um importante marcador de classe e mobilidade na geografia urbana de S\u00e3o Paulo, cujo centro expandido se localiza entre as duas vias marginais que acompanham os dois principais rios que cruzam a cidade. O centro e as periferias da imensa metr\u00f3pole s\u00e3o conectados por dezenas de pontes e viadutos sobre os cursos d'\u00e1gua escura e f\u00e9tida dos rios Pinheiros e Tiet\u00ea, t\u00e3o polu\u00eddos e canalizados que mais parecem esgotos. Em S\u00e3o Paulo, terra de arranha-c\u00e9u, quem mora da \"ponte para l\u00e1\", como Hulda e Rapos\u00e3o, convive com infraestrutura urbana prec\u00e1ria, racismo estrutural ostensivo, acesso limitado \u00e0 cidade e especialmente, a criminaliza\u00e7\u00e3o da pobreza, o estigma, a viol\u00eancia armada, a falta de assist\u00eancia e a brutalidade policial associadas \u00e0 guerra \u00e0s drogas.  <\/span>\n\nUsu\u00e1rio desde a adolesc\u00eancia, o casal conta que no in\u00edcio, o barato deles era o \u00e1lcool. Hulda acende um cigarro e explica: \"A gente tinha um barzinho em casa com v\u00e1rios tipos de bebidas e gostava de fazer festa. Viv\u00edamos b\u00eabados e discutindo, n\u00e3o dava certo. Passamos a fumar mais maconha e beber menos e as nossas brigas mudaram. A gente discute dando risada, o papo rola mais tranquilo. Viramos maconheiros. Inclusive, fica minha dica para casais com problemas de relacionamento: maconha ajuda muito\". Na \u00e9poca, lidavam com forte preconceito dentro e fora de casa. \"Meu pai era policial, agente de seguran\u00e7a p\u00fablica. Ele guardava orgulhoso um recorte de jornal de uma pris\u00e3o que fez de um cara com uma mala cheia de maconha na Esta\u00e7\u00e3o da Luz em plena ditadura. Imagine a tens\u00e3o de ter uma filha maconheira!\", relata Hulda. <\/span>\n\nO que come\u00e7ou como uso terap\u00eautico adulto que melhorou o relacionamento do casal e reduziu seu consumo de \u00e1lcool se transformou, d\u00e9cadas depois, em luta pol\u00edtica pela legaliza\u00e7\u00e3o. Um grave erro do sistema de justi\u00e7a criminal atingiu diretamente a fam\u00edlia quando, em 2011, o filho Dimitri, ent\u00e3o com 22 anos de idade, foi preso equivocadamente acusado de furto. Hulda sabia que o filho era inocente porque ele estava com dor de dente e tinha passado a noite do tal crime em casa com ela. \"Ainda est\u00e1vamos deitados, a pol\u00edcia chegou de manh\u00e3 cedo e levou o Dimitri com base apenas em um depoimento de outro acusado. N\u00e3o teve papo\", conta Rapos\u00e3o, subindo o tom da voz e da raiva pela primeira e \u00fanica vez em toda a entrevista. <\/span>\n\nA fam\u00edlia acreditou que Dimi, como \u00e9 carinhosamente chamado, seria liberado logo pois era imposs\u00edvel provar sua participa\u00e7\u00e3o no roubo. Por\u00e9m, se viram v\u00edtimas da morosidade e inefici\u00eancia da justi\u00e7a brasileira. \"Foram tr\u00eas anos de pesadelo: demorei meses para entender como funcionava o sistema e aprender a preparar o 'jumbo' (kit de alimentos e itens de higiene pessoal levados por familiares a pessoas encarceradas). Perdemos muito tempo e dinheiro com advogados ruins e oportunistas. Isso quase quebrou nossa fam\u00edlia\", desabafa Hulda. \"Meu filho foi transferido para um pres\u00eddio no interior, eu tinha que viajar e ainda passar por revistas humilhantes e vexat\u00f3rias a cada visita. No final eu j\u00e1 n\u00e3o aguentava mais\". Dimitri foi solto em regime condicional e respondeu processo em liberdade at\u00e9 o julgamento encerrar o caso por falta de provas. Na sequ\u00eancia, Dimi se dedicou a estabelecer uma nova ocupa\u00e7\u00e3o de moradias populares ali mesmo no Jardim Arpoador, bairro da fam\u00edlia. \"Essa rua foram eles que constru\u00edram; o nome da comunidade \u00e9 Pelourinho\", indica Rapos\u00e3o, sorrindo novamente. <\/span>\n\nAntes de ser encarcerado, Dimi j\u00e1 era ativista da Marcha da Maconha S\u00e3o Paulo, movimento social aut\u00f4nomo que desde 2008 realiza protestos de rua pela legaliza\u00e7\u00e3o da planta e pelo fim da guerra \u00e0s drogas. \"Depois que o Dimi foi preso, <\/span>come\u00e7amos<\/span><\/a> a participar do ato na avenida Paulista para honrar o nome e a luta do nosso filho\", conta Hulda.
