When we hear the word “psychoactive,” we usually think immediately of a drug that causes hallucinations. But the truth is that we consume psychoactive substances daily that don’t produce anything like that. So, what is a psychoactive substance? What does it cause in our body? What is the difference between psychedelics?
In this new episode of “Jard\u00ednes y Laberintos,” we discuss these topics with Mexican Diego Magaldi, also known as “the chemist of the neighborhood.” Based in France, Diego studied organic chemistry precisely due to his interest in psychoactive plants.<\/p>\n

Our guest explained that “a psychoactive substance can be any that alters the central nervous system. Sometimes, one can consciously notice the changes when consuming something as basic as coffee or sugar and go further, such as substances prohibited by law, considered drugs such as marijuana or cocaine, etc.”
But his main interest was always hallucinogens. “When hallucinogens are consumed, these substances give a completely new dimension to perception,” he pointed out. “Most people could say that it is a spiritual awakening because one comes into contact with such deep ways of thinking, stored memories, also giving this feeling of understanding.”
For the specialist, “it is difficult to express in words what these substances produce, but they allow a new way of perceiving oneself through a modification of mental or altered states of consciousness.”
However, Diego emphasized that psychoactive substances are dangerous when consumed out of control. “All these substances can be prone to abuse. One of the great examples is how for the ancient Mesoamerican peoples, tobacco, for example, was a sacred plant. Now it is one of the plants that produce a great number of deaths per year around the world.” That’s why, the chemist holds, “one of the maxims of pharmacology says that the poison or the cure is in the dose.”<\/p>\n

escuchamos la palabra \u201cpsicoactivo\u201d, solemos pensar de inmediato en una droga que provoca alucinaciones. Pero la verdad es que a diario consumimos psicoactivos que no producen nada de eso. <\/span>\n\nEntonces, \u00bfqu\u00e9 es una sustancia psicoactiva? \u00bfQu\u00e9 causa en nuestro cuerpo? \u00bfCu\u00e1l es la diferencia con la psicodelia?<\/span>\n\nEn esta nueva entrega de \u2018Jardines y Laberintos\u2019, conversaremos de esos temas con el mexicano Diego Magaldi, tambi\u00e9n conocido como \u2018el qu\u00edmico del barrio\u2019. Radicado en Francia, Diego estudi\u00f3 qu\u00edmica org\u00e1nica, justamente por su inter\u00e9s en las plantas psicoactivas. <\/span>\n\nNuestro invitado explic\u00f3 que \u201cuna sustancia psicoactiva puede ser toda aquella que altere el sistema nervioso central. A veces, uno puede conscientemente notar los cambios cuando consume algo tan b\u00e1sico como el caf\u00e9 o el az\u00facar y puede ir hasta algo m\u00e1s lejos como sustancias que est\u00e1n prohibidas por la ley, consideradas como drogas que pueden ser marihuana o coca\u00edna, etc.\u201d<\/span>\n\nPero su inter\u00e9s central fueron siempre las sustancias alucin\u00f3genas. \u201cCuando se consumen alucin\u00f3genos, este tipo de sustancias dan una dimensi\u00f3n completamente nueva a la percepci\u00f3n\u201d, se\u00f1al\u00f3. \u201cLa mayor parte de las personas podr\u00edan decir que es un despertar espiritual porque uno entra en contacto con maneras de pensar tan profundas, recuerdos guardados, tambi\u00e9n dan esta sensaci\u00f3n de comprensi\u00f3n\u201d. <\/span>\n\nPara el especialista, \u201ces dif\u00edcil expresar con palabras lo que estas sustancias producen, pero permiten una nueva manera de percibirse a s\u00ed mismo a trav\u00e9s de una modificaci\u00f3n mental o de los estados alterados de la conciencia\u201d.<\/span>\n\nSin embargo, Diego remarc\u00f3 que los psicoactivos tienden a ser peligrosos cuando se los consume de manera descontrolada. \u201cTodas estas sustancias se pueden prestar al abuso. Uno de los grandes ejemplos es c\u00f3mo para los pueblos de la Mesoam\u00e9rica antigua el tabaco, por ejemplo, era una planta sagrada y ahora es una de las plantas que produce una gran cantidad de muertes por a\u00f1o en todo el mundo\u201d.
