Regresamos con Novedad<\/span><\/i> is not only a photobook about Colombian Pacific cabotage ships, those small vessels that transport merchandise and passengers. It is, in fact, Lilia Cuero’s homage to her father, a machinist who died in the middle of a shipwreck. Through photos, her father’s logbook, and interviews with other Afro-descendant crew members, Cuero recovers a part of his memory.<\/span><\/p>\n

The last time Lilia Cuero spoke to Melanio, her dad, was Wednesday, July 3, 2019. She was in Medell\u00edn. He was working in the port of Buenaventura, as usual. She doesn’t remember what they talked about exactly, only that Melanio called her to see how she was doing. Her father was a hardened man of the sea, hardworking and loving, who spent his free time with his family, especially playing with his granddaughters. They had already talked about taking some pictures. Before hanging up, Lilia reminded him that they would do them when they met again.<\/span><\/p>\n

The day after that last call, Melanio embarked as engineer of the ‘<\/span>Karol Tatiana,<\/span><\/i>‘ bound for Choc\u00f3. It was a dark night in the Pacific, the rain did not stop, and there was a lot of fog. The ship was carrying an excessive load and was not in the best condition. All this meant that two hours after setting sail, the ship was wrecked at Buoy 2 in front of Bah\u00eda M\u00e1laga. It carried 16 passengers and five crew members: one passenger, the cook, a sailor, and the engineer died. The Coast Guard was unable to act quickly due to bad weather. Melanio Cuero, with the strength of his 52 years, swam and swam in search of dry land. The next day, his body was found near La Bocana beach.<\/span><\/p>\n

After a month of mourning for her father, and perhaps as a tribute, Lilia Cuero exhibited her series on coastal shipping for the first time. The event was the closing of Sac\u00fadete, an educational program in which young people from Buenaventura, like Lilia, learned photography, video, and graphic design. Lilia says that, in those classes, her teacher Andr\u00e9s Mill\u00e1n told her that before shooting the camera, she should write and draw her photos, thinking very carefully about what she wanted to create. She knew she was interested in boats and people like her father.<\/p>\n

Cabotage ships are small boats that transport goods such as food, water, gas, necessities, and passengers to Colombia Pacific coastal and coastal populations. They leave, in this case, from Buenaventura, the collection center, to places like Yurumangu\u00ed, El Naya, Guapi, L\u00f3pez de Micay Timbiqu\u00ed, Tumaco, Barbacoas, Nuqu\u00ed, and other places where neither cars or airplanes can reach due to the rugged geography.<\/span><\/p>\n

“I wanted to take pictures of my dad because I was learning to take pictures and because I saw that there were beautiful places and boats,” says the 32-year-old photographer. “It was an environment that was familiar to me and that filled it with beauty.” Over time, portraying the world of coastal ships and their crews became, for Lilia, a reunion with her father.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2020, Lilia won the Expedici\u00f3n Sensorial scholarship from the Ministry of Culture. Her tutor was visual artist Georgina Montoya, who taught her the path of the photobook as an expressive tool. Despite her determination and determination, when in 2022 she won the Crear Paz grant from the Ministry of Culture, Lilia was a bit anxious. She had done interviews with the men who worked on the ships, expanded her photographic series, and even had a macho man printed, but she didn’t know who could help her design her photobook.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In that search, she found <\/span>an interview<\/span><\/a> with visual artist and editor Zully Sotelo from <\/span>Aqu\u00ed y All\u00e1<\/span><\/a> and decided to contact her. Zully says that she suddenly started receiving messages from “a stranger” on her social networks who needed her to make a photo book. After two weeks of periodic messages, they made a video call; she understood Lilia’s intention and her time and money conditions. With that in mind, Zully created a team with Jos\u00e9 Ruiz and Arturo Salazar from the publishing house Ediciones R\u00e9plica.<\/span><\/p>\n

They created an archive with photos of Lilia, documents, articles about the shipwreck, interviews, and old papers of don Melanio. Among these documents was the logbook: his father recorded the details of the voyage in its pages, but it was also the notebook where he exercised his calligraphy. He learned to read and write as an adult and took advantage of his free time during the trip to practice. He would write the names of his children, the ports of departure and arrival, and the phrase that appeared most often: “we returned without any news.”<\/span><\/p>\n

With the project underway, Lilia took more photos, this time portraits of the sailors. This process resulted in <\/span>Regresamos con Novedad <\/span><\/i>(we are back with news)<\/span>, which in Zully’s words, more than a photobook, is “a sea where they could navigate the stories, not only of my father but of the other men and women machinists who work on the coasting ships.”<\/span><\/p>\n

The sequence of images immerses us in the journey along the Pacific coast, in that greenish-gray water and the overcast sky. We feel the swell and the ship’s movement on the water, moving images and meanings. The repeated texts of Don Melanio’s logbook accompany passages from Buenaventura to Nuqu\u00ed, with no novelty. Of journeys that end up underwater. Of stories that speak not only of the various trades on the sea: but also of daily life, violence, the past, the future, and love.<\/span><\/p>\n

As a sailor’s daughter, Lilia found beauty in the sea, ships, and destinies, some of them sad. As an editor, Zully found a story and an author full of energy and impetus to learn. As readers, we find unknown stories, although daily and intense, as sometimes is the swell.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

no solo es un fotolibro sobre barcos de cabotaje del Pac\u00edfico colombiano, esas peque\u00f1as embarcaciones que transportan mercanc\u00edas y pasajeros. Es, en realidad, el homenaje que Lilia Cuero hace a su padre, un maquinista que muri\u00f3 en medio de un naufragio. A trav\u00e9s de fotos, la bit\u00e1cora que llevaba su padre y entrevistas a otros tripulantes afrodescendientes, Cuero recupera una parte de su memoria.<\/span>\n\nPor Marcela Vallejo<\/span>\n\n[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=\"4.15\" _module_preset=\"default\" custom_padding=\"50px||50px||false|false\" locked=\"off\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"]\n\nLa \u00faltima vez que Lilia Cuero habl\u00f3 con Melanio, su pap\u00e1, fue el mi\u00e9rcoles 3 de julio de 2019. Ella estaba en Medell\u00edn. \u00c9l, trabajando en el puerto de Buenaventura, como siempre. Ella no recuerda exactamente de qu\u00e9 hablaron, solo que Melanio la llam\u00f3 para saber c\u00f3mo le estaba yendo. Su pap\u00e1 era un hombre curtido en el mar, trabajador y cari\u00f1oso, que pasaba sus tiempos libres en familia, sobre todo jugando con sus nietas. Ya hab\u00edan hablado de hacer unas fotos. Antes de colgar, Lilia le record\u00f3 que las har\u00edan cuando volvieran a verse.<\/span>\n\nEl d\u00eda despu\u00e9s de esa \u00faltima llamada, Melanio se embarc\u00f3 como maquinista del \u2018Karol Tatiana\u2019, rumbo hacia el Choc\u00f3. Era una noche oscura en el Pac\u00edfico, la lluvia no paraba y hab\u00eda mucha neblina. El barco llevaba una carga excesiva y no estaba en las mejores condiciones. Todo esto hizo que dos horas despu\u00e9s de zarpar, la nave naufragara en la Boya 2 frente a Bah\u00eda M\u00e1laga. Transportaba a 16 pasajeros y cinco tripulantes: murieron un pasajero, la cocinera, un marinero y el maquinista. Los guardacostas no pudieron actuar con rapidez debido al mal tiempo. Melanio Cuero, con la fuerza de sus 52 a\u00f1os, nad\u00f3 y nad\u00f3 buscando tierra firme. Al d\u00eda siguiente, encontraron su cuerpo cerca de la playa de La Bocana.<\/span>\n\nLuego de un mes de luto por su pap\u00e1, y tal vez a modo de homenaje, Lilia Cuero expuso por primera vez su serie sobre barcos de cabotaje. El evento era el cierre de <\/span>Sac\u00fadete<\/span><\/i>, un programa educativo en el que j\u00f3venes de Buenaventura, como Lilia, aprend\u00edan fotograf\u00eda, video y dise\u00f1o gr\u00e1fico. Lilia cuenta que, en esas clases, su profesor Andr\u00e9s Mill\u00e1n le dijo que antes de disparar la c\u00e1mara, deb\u00eda escribir y dibujar sus fotos, pensando muy bien qu\u00e9 quiere crear. Salen, en este caso, desde Buenaventura, el centro de acopio, hacia lugares como Yurumangu\u00ed, El Naya, Guapi, L\u00f3pez de Micay Timbiqu\u00ed, Tumaco, Barbacoas, Nuqu\u00ed y otros lugares a los que no llegan ni carros, ni aviones por la accidentada geograf\u00eda.<\/span>\n\n\u201cYo le quer\u00eda tomar fotos a mi pap\u00e1 porque estaba aprendiendo a hacer fotograf\u00edas y porque ve\u00eda que por all\u00e1 hab\u00eda lugares bonitos y hab\u00eda barcos\u201d, dice la fot\u00f3grafa de 32 a\u00f1os. \u201cEra un ambiente que familiar para m\u00ed y eso lo llenaba de belleza\u201d. Con el tiempo, retratar el mundo de los barcos de cabotaje y sus tripulantes, se convirti\u00f3 para Lilia en un reencuentro con su Cultura y su tutora fue la artista pl\u00e1stica Georgina Montoya, quien le ense\u00f1\u00f3 el camino del fotolibro como herramienta expresiva. A pesar de su empe\u00f1o y decisi\u00f3n, cuando en 2022 gan\u00f3 la beca Crear Paz del Ministerio de Cultura, Lilia se angusti\u00f3 un poco. Hab\u00eda hecho entrevistas a los hombres que trabajan en los barcos, hab\u00eda ampliado su serie fotogr\u00e1fica, incluso ten\u00eda un machote impreso, pero no sab\u00eda qui\u00e9n pod\u00eda ayudarle a dise\u00f1ar su fotolibro. <\/span>\n\nEn esa b\u00fasqueda encontr\u00f3 <\/span>una <\/span><\/a>entrevista a la artista visual y editora Zully Sotelo, de <\/span>Aqu\u00ed y All\u00e1<\/span><\/a>, y decidi\u00f3 contactarla. Zully cuenta que de pronto un d\u00eda empez\u00f3 a recibir mensajes por sus redes sociales de \u201cuna desconocida\u201d que la necesitaba para hacer un fotolibro. Al cabo de dos semanas de mensajes entrecortados, lograron hacer una videollamada y as\u00ed entendi\u00f3, no s\u00f3lo la intenci\u00f3n de Lilia, sino tambi\u00e9n las condiciones de tiempo y dinero con las que contaba. Con eso en cuenta, Zully cre\u00f3 un equipo con Jos\u00e9 Ruiz y Arturo Salazar de la editorial Ediciones R\u00e9plica.<\/span>\n\nCrearon un archivo con fotos hechas por Lilia, documentos y art\u00edculos sobre el naufragio del barco, las entrevistas y papeles viejos de don Melanio. Entre esos documentos estaba la bit\u00e1cora: en sus p\u00e1ginas el pap\u00e1 registraba los detalles del viaje, pero tambi\u00e9n era el cuaderno donde ejercitaba su caligraf\u00eda. \u00c9l aprendi\u00f3 a leer y a escribir siendo adulto y aprovechaba los tiempos libres del viaje para practicar. El resultado de todo este proceso fue <\/span>Regresamos con novedad<\/span><\/i>, que en palabras de Zully, m\u00e1s que un fotolibro, es \u201cun mar donde pod\u00edan navegar las historias, no solamente del pap\u00e1, sino de los otros hombres y mujeres maquinistas que trabajan en los barcos de cabotaje\u201d.<\/span>\n\nLa secuencia de im\u00e1genes nos sumerge en el viaje por la costa Pac\u00edfica, en esa agua gris verdosa y el cielo encapotado. A sentir el oleaje y el movimiento de la nave sobre el agua, moviendo las im\u00e1genes y los significados. Los textos repetidos de la bit\u00e1cora de don Melanio acompa\u00f1an pasajes de Buenaventura a Nuqu\u00ed, sin novedad. De recorridos que acaban bajo el agua. De historias que hablan no solo de los varios oficios sobre el mar: tambi\u00e9n de la vida cotidiana, de la violencia, del pasado, del futuro y de los amores.<\/span>\n\nComo hija de navegante, Lilia encontr\u00f3 belleza en el mar, los barcos y los destinos, algunos tristes. Como editora, Zully encontr\u00f3 una historia y una autora llena de energ\u00eda e \u00edmpetu para aprender.
