Santiago Wanderers is the oldest soccer team in Chile: they are called the Dean of Chilean soccer. In 2007, its women’s division was created, and only last year was it declared ‘professional.’ Manne Stoller’s daughter joined the team. Moved by her daughter’s passion, the photographer immersed herself in the world of women’s soccer and discovered stories of resistance, beauty, and rebellion, which she will include in her first documentary <\/span>Decanas. Porte\u00f1as de Pasi\u00f3n Verde.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

On a winter Monday in 2019, the final of the Gold Cup championship was played in Valpara\u00edso. That day there would be two matches in the Mar\u00eda Eisler field, a land embedded in the Placeres hill that had been donated by one of the neighbors. Chilean photographer Maria Stoller was on site, accompanying the event.<\/span><\/p>\n

The first match of the day was a men’s preliminary. Around the place was a soccer party with many men drinking beer, eating Choripan, and commenting on what was happening on the field. Half an hour before the end of the match, the atmosphere began to change: children arrived, and behind them came their families. The place was transformed, and the soccer party gave way to a family party. The women’s soccer final between the Sara Braun and Pedro Cabrera teams was about to begin.<\/span><\/p>\n

The party was something else, “two-year-old kids were playing, it was already half past eight at night, and it was dark. It was winter.” The photographer says that there was a feeling of tranquility and warmth. As a photographer, she did not feel threatened, as she might have felt in an all-male environment.<\/span><\/p>\n

“It has that warmth of women’s soccer to do the same thing that women have historically done: embrace and generate this space of tranquility,” says Stoller. For her, what happened that day is an example of women’s soccer’s strength: “it has to do with a beauty that seems to come from this will to make life despite all the historical resistance.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Stoller says that photography has always been in her life since she was a child, but when her daughter decided to become a soccer player, photography took the place it is now. As her daughter strengthened her skills as a player, Stoller realized the importance of making visible what was happening. Because it wasn’t just about girls playing soccer: there was discrimination, inequality, and injustice. It was only last year that women’s soccer became professional in Chile. To raise her voice, to express herself, to denounce, but also to celebrate, Stoller found in her camera the ideal tool.<\/span><\/p>\n

The photographer is preparing her first audiovisual documentary <\/span>Decanas. Porte\u00f1as de Pasi\u00f3n Verde<\/span><\/i>, in which she tells part of the story of the professionalization of the Santiago Wanderers women’s team and criticizes the fans. She also belongs to the Ibero-American collective Hinchas Reales Cuerpas Reales, which is interested in making visible “the passion of women and dissident fans of soccer clubs.” Last year, they participated in the annual call made by the Photography Center of Montevideo with an exhibition at the photo gallery El Prado.<\/span><\/p>\n

Did you already have an interest in soccer, or is this something your daughter got you interested in alone?<\/b><\/p>\n

The truth is that, in a sense, soccer makes fun of me a little bit. This story has been a way in which life has ironically made me see what I missed out. For me, soccer was a weekend nuisance. It was an invasion. There was nothing that soccer brought to me affectively.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But when I saw that what my daughter wanted more than anything in her life was to be a soccer player and the passion and the decision she had, everything changed. We started in 2017, and today she is part of the professional women’s training of Wanderers. That’s when I decided that I had to understand where she was; if this was going to be her world and I was going to accompany her, I decided that I had to do something about what she was going through. I decided that I didn’t want another girl to have to go through this again to do what she wants to do, and I have to say it loud and clear, that is, this is a right: the passion for doing something that moves your stomach cannot be subject to gender.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That’s when soccer and I reconciled and began to know all its dimensions from sociology, philosophy, and cinema. I began to understand why it was not only an imposition that seemed whimsical from a sporting point of view but also because we had been marginalized from the beginning of history.<\/span><\/p>\n

The experience of accompanying your daughter in her process as a soccer player made you strengthen your relationship with photography. Along the way, you started the project D<\/b>ecanas. Porte\u00f1as de pasi\u00f3n verde <\/i><\/b>a documentary about the women of Wanderers. What was it that pushed you so firmly?<\/b><\/p>\n

When my daughter and I were introduced in 2017 to the dimension of women’s soccer in Chile, I was immersed in a new space. I began to surround myself with many violent situations from the resistance that they had to be permanently inhabiting them as professional players, as women, as athletes, and as families in the face of a reality that was ultimately upside down. I said, I have a tool that allows me to make visible and say what is happening, and I have to say it somehow, and I am here inside, so I spoke from photography, from the audiovisual I have to call attention to it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That was the initial kick-off for what Decanas means today. It is the project that I started from this question and the need to understand how this dimension of soccer, which is so huge, had so many implications. It had to do with a pair of shoes that did not have the goats to play on the field and with a historical resistance in which women have been detached from the reality of social organization.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The question, installed in many different ways, pushed me to the need to make visible what was happening permanently and to understand, ask myself questions, and begin to investigate in various worlds. From there, photography became a tool, a trench.<\/span><\/p>\n

The question you have worked with is about the place of women in soccer. What have you found?<\/b><\/p>\n

In 2017, at the Valparaiso Photography Festival, I participated in the workshop of photographer Nicol\u00e1s Janowski, and a personal project had to be raised in that city. I took women’s soccer hand in hand with the Wanderers fans, and from the question of how women were denied in that space, I began to inquire about the historical reality of Wanderers women in their city.<\/span><\/p>\n

Santiago Wanderers is the oldest soccer team in Chile, the dean of Chilean soccer. The players until 2017 were called ‘Caturritas’; now they are called ‘Decanas.’<\/span><\/p>\n

The passion and the work that the players have is the same, and the difference is in the rights that are made flesh when it comes to being social subjects. It was only last year that the milestone of the professionalization of women’s soccer in Chile was set.<\/span><\/p>\n

So, I joined the Association of Chilean Football Researchers to investigate and look for new ways to vindicate women in soccer in Chile. Something that moved me was that people keep talking about these women following a fashion, even though women’s soccer has been played in Chile for over 100 years. There is a history that is submerged because the official media are male.<\/span><\/p>\n

You mention that soccer led you to investigate several worlds. What were they?<\/b><\/p>\n

When I identified the need for tracking or information surveys that vindicate our position in this sport, I found another space for dissemination in the cinema. So I became part of the Festigol team, Film + Soccer Festival, and last year we created a poster celebrating the milestone of the professionalization of women’s soccer. We also discussed soccer and resistance in spaces of social coexistence dynamics. We were interested in valuing the importance of these organized women generating social fabric in their areas despite all the negligence of the state.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Cinema has been a resource to roar that this exists, that we are here, that there is dissident soccer, and that this soccer is virtuous because it generates this social fabric. In addition, it revolutionizes the social spaces where it is installed; it generates new ways of communicating, associating, and creating society.<\/span><\/p>\n

From photography and research, I joined the Cuerpos Reales, Hinchas Reales (Real Bodies, Real Fans) collective also to make Wanderer women visible.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There is a criticism of soccer, probably from people who are not interested but who see soccer as just that: men playing on a field. They may not see all this social fabric you mention and for which there are interesting examples.<\/b><\/p>\n

In soccer, the market has eaten everything. We have a smokescreen over the situation; politically, it should be a bit like that. Here in Chile today, if you ask me how to make a country reconnect after all the things that have happened socially, how to get closer again and meet again, to get out not only of virtuality but of that intrinsic selfishness in which we are all separated. We care little, and to regain that social fabric is precisely in sports activities and in the sports venues of neighborhood clubs.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nobody says no to a P<\/em><\/span>ichanga<\/span><\/i>. It is fundamental but genuine: who can resist sharing time in a space where it doesn’t matter how you play because you will enjoy the possibility of sharing?<\/span><\/p>\n

People do not see all this because they are left with the image of Alexis Sanchez: success and excessive consumption, that aspirational image that may be nice, but if we take it down to the real world, it is far from what is happening to us and how we live our lives. So there is a repudiation of the image of this soccer that has no soul.<\/span><\/p>\n

Women’s soccer has a beauty that pushes me from photography to show the effort it has in itself. First of all, it has a passion that seems to be able to do everything; historically, it has been like that, and it remains like that. It is like that strength that women seem to have and that we are permanently feeding back.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It does not have this competitiveness to the death that exists among men, but it is just as passionate, super intense, and has its complexities. It also has to do with this energy, which is feminine and independent of what we are talking about; there are also dissidents playing, and many different dynamics are developing. Even when playing at the level of mixed soccer organized by women, the dynamics inside the field are different.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pedro Carcuro, a well-known commentator here in Chile, talks about the dance of soccer. The women dance behind the ball, and it generates a different rhythm. This feminist discourse, if you will, for me, is a discourse of resistance that can be seen in everything. It fills everything. It’s like a hymn to life. That’s what women’s soccer is all about.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ese d\u00eda habr\u00eda dos partidos en la cancha Mar\u00eda Eisler, un terreno encajado en el cerro Placeres que hab\u00eda sido donado por uno de los vecinos. La fot\u00f3grafa chilena Maria Stoller estaba en el lugar acompa\u00f1ando el evento.\n\nEl primer partido del d\u00eda era una preliminar masculina. Alrededor del lugar se viv\u00eda una fiesta futbolera con muchos hombres tomando cerveza, comiendo choripan y comentando lo que suced\u00eda en la cancha. Media hora antes de que terminara el partido, el ambiente empez\u00f3 a cambiar: llegaron ni\u00f1os y detr\u00e1s de ellos llegaron sus familias. El lugar se transform\u00f3 y la fiesta futbolera dio paso a una fiesta familiar. Empezaba la final de f\u00fatbol femenino entre los equipos Sara Braun y Pedro Cabrera.\n\nLa fiesta era otra cosa, \u201chab\u00eda cabros chicos de dos a\u00f1os jugando, ya eran las ocho y media de la noche y estaba oscuro, era en invierno\u201d. La fot\u00f3grafa dice que se sent\u00eda mucha tranquilidad y calidez. Ella, como fot\u00f3grafa, no se sent\u00eda amenazada, como s\u00ed pod\u00eda sentirse en el ambiente exclusivamente masculino.\n\n\u201cTiene esa calidez el f\u00fatbol femenino de hacer lo mismo que las mujeres hist\u00f3ricamente hemos hecho: acoger y generar este espacio de tranquilidad\u201d, afirma Stoller. Para ella, lo que pas\u00f3 ese d\u00eda es un ejemplo de la fuerza que tiene el f\u00fatbol femenino: \u201cque tiene que ver con una belleza que pareciera venir de esta voluntad de hacer vida a pesar de todas las resistencias hist\u00f3ricas\u201d.\n\nStoller dice que la fotograf\u00eda siempre estuvo en su vida, desde chica, pero fue cuando su hija decidi\u00f3 ser futbolista que la foto tom\u00f3 el lugar que ahora tiene. A medida que la hija iba fortaleciendo sus habilidades como jugadora, Stoller se daba cuenta de la importancia de visibilizar lo que pasaba. Por que no se trataba \u00fanicamente de se\u00f1oritas jugando f\u00fatbol: hab\u00eda discriminaci\u00f3n, desigualdad e injusticia. De hecho, solo hasta el a\u00f1o pasado se dio la profesionalizaci\u00f3n el f\u00fatbol femenino en Chile. Para alzar la voz, para expresarse, para denunciar, pero tambi\u00e9n para celebrar, Stoller encontr\u00f3 en su c\u00e1mara la herramienta ideal.\n\nLa fot\u00f3grafa prepara su primer documental audiovisual Decanas. Para m\u00ed el f\u00fatbol era una molestia de fin de semana, era una invasi\u00f3n. No hab\u00eda nada que el f\u00fatbol me reportara afectivamente. <\/span>\n\nPero cuando vi que mi hija lo que quer\u00eda m\u00e1s que nada en su vida era ser futbolista y la pasi\u00f3n y la decisi\u00f3n que ten\u00eda, todo cambi\u00f3. Partimos en el 2017 y hoy d\u00eda es parte de la formaci\u00f3n femenina profesional del Wanderers. Ah\u00ed decid\u00ed que ten\u00eda que entender d\u00f3nde estaba, si este iba a ser su mundo y yo iba a acompa\u00f1arla, decid\u00ed que ten\u00eda que hacer algo por lo que estaba pasando. Decid\u00ed que no quer\u00eda que haya una ni\u00f1a m\u00e1s que tenga que volver a pasar por esto para hacer lo que quiere y hay que decirlo fuerte, o sea, esto es un derecho: la pasi\u00f3n por hacer algo que te mueve la tripa no puede estar sujeta a un g\u00e9nero. <\/span>\n\nAh\u00ed el f\u00fatbol y yo nos reconciliamos y empec\u00e9 a conocer todas sus dimensiones desde la sociolog\u00eda, la filosof\u00eda, el cine. As\u00ed empec\u00e9 a tratar de entender por qu\u00e9 no s\u00f3lo era una imposici\u00f3n que parec\u00eda antojadiza desde el punto de vista deportivo, sino porque desde el principio de la historia Empiezo a rodearme de muchas situaciones que eran violentas desde la resistencia que ten\u00edan que estar habitando permanentemente ellas como jugadoras profesionales, como mujeres, como deportistas, como familias ante una realidad que estaba del todo de cabeza. Yo dec\u00eda, tengo una herramienta que me permite visibilizar y decir lo que est\u00e1 pasando y hay que decirlo de alguna manera y yo estoy aqu\u00ed adentro, entonces dije desde la fotograf\u00eda, desde lo audiovisual hay que llamar la atenci\u00f3n. <\/span>\n\nEse fue el puntapi\u00e9 inicial para lo que <\/span>Decanas <\/span><\/i>significa hoy d\u00eda. Es el proyecto que levant\u00e9 a partir de esta pregunta y de la necesidad de entender c\u00f3mo esta dimensi\u00f3n del f\u00fatbol que es tan enorme, ten\u00eda tantas implicaciones. No solo ten\u00eda que ver con un par de zapatos que no tuvieran las cabras para jugar en la cancha, sino con una resistencia hist\u00f3rica en que las mujeres hemos sido desvinculadas de una realidad de organizaci\u00f3n social.<\/span>\n\n La pregunta, que se instal\u00f3 desde muchas formas distintas, me empuj\u00f3 a la necesidad de visibilizar permanentemente lo que estaba pasando y entender, hacerme preguntas y empezar a indagar en varios mundos distintos. Tambi\u00e9n tuvimos un conversatorio respecto al f\u00fatbol y la resistencia en espacios de din\u00e1micas de convivencia social. Nos interesaba valorar la importancia de que estas mujeres organizadas generan en sus espacios tejidos sociales a pesar de todas las negligencias estatales. <\/span>\n\nEl cine ha sido un recurso para poder decir fuerte que esto existe, que estamos ac\u00e1, que hay un f\u00fatbol disidente y que este f\u00fatbol es virtuoso, porque genera este tejido social. <\/h3>\nEn ese sentido \u00bfqu\u00e9 crees que podemos aprender del f\u00fatbol femenino, no solo en la cancha, sino con todo lo que lo rodea?<\/b>\n\nEl f\u00fatbol femenino tiene una belleza que a m\u00ed la verdad me empuja desde la fotograf\u00eda a mostrar el esfuerzo que tiene en s\u00ed mismo. Primero tiene una pasi\u00f3n que parece que lo puede todo, hist\u00f3ricamente ha sido as\u00ed y permanece as\u00ed, es como esa fuerza que las mujeres parece que tenemos y que permanentemente estamos retroalimentando. <\/span>\n

<\/h3>\nNo tiene esta competitividad como a muerte que existe entre los hombres, pero es igual de pasional, es s\u00faper intensa y tambi\u00e9n tiene sus complejidades. Pero pienso que tiene que ver tambi\u00e9n con esta energ\u00eda, que tambi\u00e9n es femenina ya independiente de que estemos hablando de que hay disidencias jugando tambi\u00e9n y que hay un mont\u00f3n de din\u00e1micas distintas que se van gestando. Incluso cuando se juega a nivel de f\u00fatbol mixto organizado por mujeres, la din\u00e1mica dentro de la cancha es otra.<\/span>\n

<\/h3>\nPedro Carcuro, un comentarista muy conocido aqu\u00ed en Chile, habla de la danza del f\u00fatbol. Las mujeres s\u00ed parece que bailan detr\u00e1s de la pelota y es que se genera un ritmo distinto. Este discurso feminista, si t\u00fa quieres, para m\u00ed es un discurso de resistencia que se ve en todo, lo llena todo.
