In 2015, Brazilian photographer Maur\u00edcio Pokemon arrived in Boa Esperan\u00e7a, a community of urban peasants protesting against an urban development project that threatened their territory. Pokemon accompanied that struggle, lived with the people, and initiated the\u00a0<\/span>Invent\u00e1rio Verde da Boa Esperan\u00e7a\u00a0<\/span><\/em>project: an exhibition and a photobook that collects small narratives of life and resistance.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the middle of the book, there is a map. On it, there is another map. Both are superimposed. The one in the background is the official one, made by the prefecture of Teresina: in the middle and blue is the Parana\u00edba River, and on it begins the neighboring state of Maranh\u00e3o. In front of the green bank is the courtyard of the houses on Boa Esperan\u00e7a Avenue. Then there is the avenue, the road leading to the city’s most touristic places, leading, among other sites, to the mouth of the Poti River.<\/span><\/p>\n

The other, the one that is superimposed, is an affective map: it is drawn by hand on a paper that is a little transparent. On the blue river, there are canoes with people smiling and others fishing. On the bank below are trees with fruit, houses in the middle of the green, and small mirrors of water in the flood zone. The first has red lines marking specific areas and borders between places. The second has stories of childhood, neighbors, and community.<\/span><\/p>\n

The two maps are central to the photobook Invent\u00e1rio Verde da Boa Esperan\u00e7a by Brazilian photographer Maur\u00edcio Pokemon. The book comes packaged in an envelope. Divided in two, from the contrasting cover images, each side of the book opens in an accordion, allowing you to play with the images you encounter each time the reader changes pages. “For me, the inventory is where images need to relate to each other. I didn’t think of a hierarchy of images but of a format that would allow them to be in dialogue.”<\/span><\/p>\n

There are photographs, and there are small texts that evoke images. Arriving at the center is the map, the most common metaphor for talking about territory and yet the most incomplete. The<\/span>\u00a0Invent\u00e1rio<\/span><\/em>\u00a0is just what expands that notion of the map; probably that is why the map is the “last” thing to be found, and the map of affections is the first to be seen. The images that precede it are full of stories of everyday life: the hand that harvests the beans, the most common fish that fishermen catch, the agricultural tools that are taken to the Corona del R\u00edo, the characters that come out to play in the carnival every year, the ceramic pieces that artisans make.<\/span><\/p>\n

Maur\u00edcio Pokemon got to know the Boa Esperan\u00e7a community in 2015. The area was part of the everyday landscape of his life, but that year he saw something that caught his attention. On the houses, there were graffitis with phrases of protest and criticism. Such as “The history of Boa Esperan\u00e7a is its dwellers,” “Housing is a right. We demand to live, fight and resist,” “Mayor, Boa Esperan\u00e7a Avenue is not yours. Respect,” and “TV green city. The mayor’s good image.” The power of what was said there led him to have his first contact with the community.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0That is how he learned that the Prefecture intended to develop Lagoas do Norte, an urban renewal project to widen the avenue and build a luxury tourist complex. The residents insist that Firmino Filho, the mayor at the time (still in power), was trying to take away their place in the city, to uproot them and thus expropriate their memories and affections.<\/span><\/p>\n

The city started there. According to the official narrative, there is a place called ground zero, where the town was founded, and the first houses were built. The people of Boa Esperan\u00e7a say that Teresina began where they now have their home. They are primarily people of African descent who live in the city but retain rural rhythms and ways, i.e., urban peasants. The houses face the river, which means that the river is an extension of the land for the inhabitants.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Prefecture project concerns conserving and protecting the fauna and flora on the river bank, but this does not require a large urban development project. The people, throughout their history, have done it. They are farmers, fishermen, and artisans who have built a particular territoriality in which they move with the river’s rhythms and floods on their islands.<\/span><\/p>\n

When he met them, Maur\u00edcio proposed an idea that became the\u00a0<\/span>Existencia\u00a0<\/span><\/em>project, composed of full-body portraits of the neighbors. “Thinking people as trees in their backyards, as being rooted in the territory and part of the place.” The photos were printed life-size and pasted on the walls of the city. That got the press interested, and the community received a different kind of attention.<\/span><\/p>\n

A few years later, he received the news that he had won a scholarship for which he had applied in 2012. It was a surprise because he didn’t count on it six years later. But it was the kick-off to start something new. It was then when he proposed to the community to make the<\/span>\u00a0Invent\u00e1rio Verde da Boa Esperan\u00e7a,<\/span><\/em>\u00a0together they decided, knowing that they would do it with money coming from the Prefecture itself.<\/span><\/p>\n

“I wanted to do some analog photography. It made a lot of sense to me to think about another time of images with this project,” says Pokemon. “I was interested in doing something that would convey more of that permanence in memory.” At first, he sought to make a collection of images with green as a theme and motif, but that quickly petered out.<\/span><\/p>\n

With financial support, he proposed a residency at Campo, a space to exhibit and reflect on contemporary art in Teresina. They launched a call to think together with other Brazilian artists around the territory and everyday life. Everything that they discussed there gave a new air to the\u00a0<\/span>Invent\u00e1rio\u00a0<\/span><\/em>project. So Maur\u00edcio started a series of meetings with the neighbors to decide what should be in the inventory.<\/span><\/p>\n

“The\u00a0<\/span>Invent\u00e1rio<\/span><\/em>\u00a0was much more a portrait of life, all based on closeness and coexistence. The intimacy was much greater; there was more trust, and people in the community knew my work. We were able to make images of life happening”. Mauricio went to Boa Esperan\u00e7a every day, early in the morning and the evening. He captured the lights that accompany the life of that community every day.<\/span><\/p>\n

The strength of the relationship meant that people who could not stand cameras and photographs later called him to photograph what they considered important in their lives; this happened with Mr. Valdir. Maur\u00edcio had been visiting him for several years, and they liked to sit and talk; that’s how he knew Mr. Valdir didn’t want photos. He said that other people had already gone to photograph him, but he had never seen those images; he didn’t know what had happened to them.<\/p>\n

One day Mr. Valdir invited him to the Corona del R\u00edo; it would be a day of agriculture. Once there, he asked Maur\u00edcio to take pictures of his workplace. He wanted to put those pictures in his house so that visitors would know the “land so green, so beautiful, with a lot of beans of different types” that he worked. “Mr. Valdir has all that wisdom about beans; he knows which is the 30-day bean, which is the 45-day bean”. It was there when Mr. Valdir appreciated the images and realized his work’s importance. After that, he invited Maur\u00edcio to take pictures of his family and himself.<\/p>\n

Mr. Valdir was one of the people who went to the project’s exhibition in Campo, the place of art, and there he talked about the importance of their agricultural work and what they have done and are doing for the city. “That gave me a notion of how small this work is,” assures the photographer, “and I like that because that makes it close to the people. It’s a small project and a small book, as it had to be.”<\/p>\n

The book was printed using the risograph technique, giving the images a particular texture. It is handcrafted and well-made. It may seem delicate, but it is more vital than it looks. The images and some texts are little narratives of people who, in their daily lives of agriculture, crafts, and domestic life, make life and sustain a way of making the world that seems to go against the seemingly inexorable flow of progress.<\/p>\n

Sobre \u00e9l, hay otro mapa, se sobreponen. El del fondo es el oficial, el que hizo la prefectura de Teresina: en el medio y azul est\u00e1 el r\u00edo Parana\u00edba, sobre \u00e9l inicia el estado vecino de Maranha\u0303o. En frente, la orilla verde que es el patio de las casas que dan sobre la avenida Boa Esperanc\u0327a. Luego est\u00e1 la avenida, el camino que conduce a los lugares m\u00e1s tur\u00edsticos de la ciudad, lleva, entre otros lugares hacia la desembocadura del r\u00edo Poti.\n\nEl otro mapa, el que se sobrepone, es un mapa afectivo: est\u00e1 dibujado a mano, en un papel que se transparenta un poco. Sobre el r\u00edo azul hay canoas con personas que sonr\u00eden y otras que pescan, en la orilla de abajo hay \u00e1rboles con frutos, casas en medio del verde y peque\u00f1os espejos de agua de la zona de inundaci\u00f3n. El primero tiene l\u00edneas rojas que se\u00f1alan \u00e1reas espec\u00edficas, fronteras entre lugares. En el segundo hay historias de infancia, vecinos y comunidad.\n\nLos dos mapas est\u00e1n en centro del fotolibro Invent\u00e1rio verde da Boa Esperanc\u0327a del fot\u00f3grafo brasile\u00f1o Maur\u00edcio Pokemon. El libro viene empacado en un sobre. Est\u00e1 dividido en dos, desde la portada se contraponen im\u00e1genes, cada lado del libro se abre en un acorde\u00f3n, lo que permite jugar con las im\u00e1genes que se encuentran cada vez que el lector cambia de p\u00e1gina. \u201cPara m\u00ed, el inventario es un lugar donde las im\u00e1genes necesitan relacionarse con las otras. No pens\u00e9 en una jerarqu\u00eda de im\u00e1genes, sino en un formato que permitiera que estuvieran en di\u00e1logo.\u201d\n\nHay fotograf\u00edas y hay peque\u00f1os textos que evocan im\u00e1genes. Al llegar al centro se encuentra el mapa, la met\u00e1fora m\u00e1s com\u00fan para hablar de un territorio y, sin embargo, la m\u00e1s incompleta. El Invent\u00e1rio es justo lo que ampl\u00eda esa noci\u00f3n del mapa, probablemente por eso el mapa es lo \u201c\u00faltimo\u201d que se encuentra y, de hecho, es el mapa de los afectos el primero que se ve. La zona era parte del paisaje cotidiano de su vida, pero ese a\u00f1o vio algo que le llam\u00f3 la atenci\u00f3n. En las casas hab\u00eda graffitis con frases de protesta y cr\u00edtica, como: \u201cLa historia de Boa Esperanc\u0327a son sus moradores\u201d, \u201cLa vivienda es un derecho. Exigimos morar, luchar y resistir\u201d, \u201cAlcalde, la Av. Boa Esperanc\u0327a no es suya. Respete\u201d, \u201cTV ciudad verde. La buena imagen del alcalde\u201d. La potencia de lo que ah\u00ed se dec\u00eda lo llev\u00f3 a tener sus primeros contactos con la gente de la comunidad.\n\nDe esa manera se enter\u00f3 de que la Prefectura pretend\u00eda desarrollar Lagoas do Norte, un proyecto de renovaci\u00f3n urbana con el objetivo de ampliar la avenida y construir un complejo tur\u00edstico de lujo. Los moradores insisten en que al final lo que pretende Firmino Filho, el alcalde del momento (que a\u00fan sigue en el poder), era arrebatarles su lugar en la ciudad, arrancarlos y as\u00ed expropiar sus memorias y afectos.\n\nLa ciudad empez\u00f3 ah\u00ed. Hay un lugar llamado el marco cero, donde seg\u00fan la narrativa oficial se fund\u00f3 el poblado y se construyeron las primeras casas. La gente de Boa Esperanc\u0327a dice que en realidad, Teresina empez\u00f3 en donde ellos tienen ahora su hogar. Se trata de gente, en su mayor\u00eda, afrodescendiente que vive en la ciudad, pero conserva ritmos y formas de la ruralidad, es decir, son campesinos urbanos. Las casas dan contra el r\u00edo y eso hace que para los habitantes el r\u00edo sea una extensi\u00f3n del solar.\n\nEl proyecto de la prefectura habla de conservar y proteger la fauna y flora sobre la orilla del r\u00edo. Pero para eso no se necesita un gran proyecto urban\u00edstico. La gente, a lo largo de su historia lo ha hecho. Son agricultores, pescadores y artesanos que han construido una territorialidad particular en la que se mueven con los ritmos del r\u00edo, con sus crecientes, en sus islas.\n\nCuando los conoci\u00f3, Maur\u00edcio les propuso una idea que se convirti\u00f3 en el proyecto Existencia. Se trataba de retratos de cuerpo entero de los vecinos. \u201cpensando en las personas como \u00e1rboles de sus patios, con la idea de estar afincado en el territorio, de hacer parte del lugar\u201d. Las fotos fueron impresas en tama\u00f1o natural y pegadas en los muros de la ciudad. Eso logr\u00f3 que la prensa se interesara y la comunidad recibiera un tipo diferente de atenci\u00f3n.\n\n[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=\"1_2,1_2\" 2012. Fue una sorpresa, porque realmente 6 a\u00f1os despu\u00e9s \u00e9l ya no contaba con eso. Pero fue el puntapi\u00e9 para iniciar algo nuevo. Fue entonces cuando le propuso a la comunidad hacer el Invent\u00e1rio verde da Boa Esperanc\u0327a, juntos tomaron la decisi\u00f3n, sabiendo que se har\u00eda con dineros provenientes de la misma prefectura.\n\n\u201cYo quer\u00eda hacer algo de fotograf\u00eda anal\u00f3gica. Para m\u00ed ten\u00eda mucho sentido pensar en otro tiempo de las im\u00e1genes con este proyecto,\u201d cuenta Pokemon. \u201cMe interesaba hacer algo que transmitiera un poco m\u00e1s de esa permanencia en la memoria\u201d. Al principio, busc\u00f3 literalmente hacer una recolecci\u00f3n de im\u00e1genes con el verde como tema y motivo, pero eso se agot\u00f3 r\u00e1pidamente.\n\nCon un apoyo financiero propuso una residencia en Campo, un espacio para exponer y reflexionar sobre arte contempor\u00e1neo en Teresina. Lanzaron una convocatoria para pensar junto con otros artistas brasile\u00f1os alrededor del territorio y la vida cotidiana. Todo lo que discuti\u00f3 ah\u00ed le dio un nuevo aire al proyecto del Inventario. As\u00ed Maur\u00edcio decidi\u00f3 iniciar una serie de reuniones con los vecinos, para juntos decidir qu\u00e9 era lo que deb\u00eda estar en el inventario.\n\n\u201cEl Inventario fue mucho m\u00e1s un retrato de la vida, todo a partir de la cercan\u00eda y la convivencia. La intimidad era mucho mayor, hab\u00eda m\u00e1s confianza y la gente de la comunidad conoc\u00eda mi trabajo. Logramos hacer im\u00e1genes de la vida sucediendo\u201d. Mauricio iba todos los d\u00edas a Boa Esperanc\u0327a, temprano en las ma\u00f1anas y al caer la tarde. Eso pas\u00f3 con el se\u00f1or Valdir. Maur\u00edcio lo visitaba hac\u00eda varios a\u00f1os y les gustaba sentarse a conversar, as\u00ed fue como supo que al se\u00f1or no le gustaban las fotos, dec\u00eda que ya hab\u00edan ido otras personas a fotograf\u00edarlo pero \u00e9l nunca hab\u00eda visto esas im\u00e1genes, no sab\u00eda qu\u00e9 hab\u00eda pasado con ellas.\n\nUn d\u00eda el se\u00f1or Valdir lo invit\u00f3 a ir a la Corona del r\u00edo, ser\u00eda un d\u00eda de agricultura. Una vez all\u00e1 le pidi\u00f3 a Maur\u00edcio que hiciera fotos de su lugar de trabajo. \u00c9l quer\u00eda poner esas im\u00e1genes en su casa, para que as\u00ed las visitas conocieran el \u201cterreno tan verde, tan bonito, con un mont\u00f3n de fr\u00edjoles de diferentes tipos\u201d que \u00e9l trabajaba. \u201cEl se\u00f1or Valdir tiene toda esa sabidur\u00eda del fr\u00edjol, sabe cu\u00e1l es el de 30 d\u00edas, cu\u00e1l el de 45\u201d. Fue ah\u00ed cuando el se\u00f1or Valdir apreci\u00f3 las im\u00e1genes, y tambi\u00e9n se dio cuenta de la importancia de su trabajo. Despu\u00e9s de eso invit\u00f3 a Maur\u00edcio a hacer fotos de su familia y de \u00e9l mismo.\n\nEl se\u00f1or Valdir fue una de las personas que fue a la exposici\u00f3n del proyecto en Campo, el lugar del arte, y ah\u00ed habl\u00f3 de la importancia de su trabajo agr\u00edcola y de lo que han hecho y hacen por la ciudad. \u201cEso me dio una noci\u00f3n de cu\u00e1n peque\u00f1o es este trabajo\u201d, asegura el fot\u00f3grafo, \u201cy me gusta mucho eso, porque eso lo hace cercano a las personas. Es un proyecto peque\u00f1o y un libro peque\u00f1o, como ten\u00eda que ser\u201d.\n\nEl libro fue impreso en risograf\u00eda, lo que le da una textura particular a las im\u00e1genes. Su manufactura es artesanal y bien hecha. Puede parecer delicado, pero es m\u00e1s fuerte de lo que aparenta.
