Peru is the country that produces the most gold in Latin America. The history of this exploitation began long before the arrival of the Spaniards, but with the conquest and colonization, the relationship with the metal changed. Now is large-scale extractivist exploitation, in which gold is another commodity that moves the world. Peruvian photographer Marco Garro decided to explore this history by covering three historical moments in three geographical areas of the country.<\/p>\n

Gold mines are also mines of stories. In some places, one of the most important characters is the devil. In others, it is a fortune. Peru, the largest gold producer in Latin America, still has a very abusive form of worker exploitation. It consists of “Cachorreo”: “you work for free for a certain amount of time,” says Peruvian photographer Marco Garro, “so that after a week or two weeks of working for free, they give you one or two days to be able to enter and extract as much gold as you can. It’s like a kind of modern slavery.”
The question that we all ask ourselves and that the photographer asked the miners is: how do you know if you are going to find gold on those days? “Some told me that there were many stories about fortune, of miners that from one day to the next, in one of those two days, they found a lot of gold, or that while digging a rock of a kilo of gold fell on them. Other stories told that they had found and hid a vein to exploit it in those days that the Cachorreo allowed them.”<\/p>\n

All this happened in places of illegal extraction, where miners work in precarious conditions, and where there is human trafficking. But also where miners share the feeling that there are no other options. That, perhaps, is an idea that also surrounds other mining areas. Many know the impact of this activity, but it feels like an inevitable destiny.<\/p>\n

Peru has been the largest gold producer in Latin America since 1995; since 2006, it has ranked sixth in the world. It is estimated that between 1496 (the time from which records are kept) and 2013, 117.7 million ounces have been extracted in the country, something like 3,336 tons. Today, this product represents 60% of Peru’s total exports. The importance of this metal is undeniable, and its history has crossed the history of this territory. However, some darkness and mystery surround the production of gold, which has been the subject that has most interested the Peruvian Marco Garro.<\/span><\/p>\n

Garro has spent several years researching and photographically documenting mining in his country. The interest was born when he had the assignment to visit Cerro de Pasco, a mining settlement 290 kilometers from Lima. “It is a city whose inhabitants have big problems with lead contamination in their blood, and there is a lot of environmental pollution,” says Marco. What struck him the most was that until that moment, he did not know of the existence of Cerro de Pasco.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0How was that possible if it was close to home and he was relatively knowledgeable? This discovery led him to investigate other mining cases in his country. Thus, he has developed projects on childhood in mines, and the transformation of natural and social landscapes, the highest mine in the world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2018 he started<\/span>\u00a0El oro que heredamos, el oro que so\u00f1amos,\u00a0<\/span><\/em>a project focused on different facets of this metal. The photographer was learning how the various inhabitants of what is now his country had had different types of relationships with gold throughout history, concentrating on three moments: pre-Columbian times, when gold had a sacred and ritual character; colonization, when gold began to transform into a commodity; and the present time, when gold is a resource of legal and illegal exploitation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Garro looked for these “temporalities” in three different places. For the relationship established with gold in pre-Hispanic times, the photographer went to northern Peru, the cradle of the Moche civilization. “They were the great metallurgists of ancient Peru. They used gold in a sacred way as an element of representation of divinity.”
Then, he went to Cusco, where he worked on the theme of the Conquest and Colony. “I was interested in seeing how gold began to be woven into the Hispanic and Inca culture. Evangelization, one of the conquest’s elements, used gold leaf in their sacred images.” The last part, where he worked on modern gold mining, was done in the Peruvian Andes and Amazon.
Garro’s research revolves around gold in extractive terms. For him, the form that legal or illegal mining has taken in his country implies a cultural shock. “Land in Peru has a super strong ancestral meaning,” he explains. “In indigenous cultures, you can extract from the land to give it a blessing or a gratification. In other words, there is an exchange. But resource extraction is extracting and extracting and not giving anything in return. I am talking about gold extraction, but there is also silver, zinc, lead, and oil. These are important elements of our daily life, which always surround us, but they have a dark side. And that’s what I like to explore.”<\/p>\n

La historia de esa explotaci\u00f3n inicia mucho antes de la llegada de los espa\u00f1oles, pero con la conquista y la colonizaci\u00f3n la relaci\u00f3n con el metal cambi\u00f3. Ahora, se trata de una explotaci\u00f3n extractivista a gran escala, en la que el oro es una mercanc\u00eda m\u00e1s que mueve el mundo. El fot\u00f3grafo peruano Marco Garro decidi\u00f3 explorar esa historia abarcando tres momentos hist\u00f3ricos en tres zonas geogr\u00e1ficas del pa\u00eds.\n\n <\/span>\n\nPor Marcela Vallejo<\/span>\n\n[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=\"4.15\" _module_preset=\"default\" custom_padding=\"50px||50px||false|false\" locked=\"off\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"]\n\nLas minas de oro son tambi\u00e9n minas de historias. En algunos lugares uno de los personajes m\u00e1s importantes es el diablo, en otros es la fortuna. En Per\u00fa, el mayor productor de oro de Latinoam\u00e9rica, a\u00fan funciona una forma de explotaci\u00f3n muy abusiva hacia los trabajadores. Se trata del \u201ccachorreo\u201d: \u201cconsiste en que t\u00fa trabajas gratuitamente por cierta cantidad de tiempo\u201d, cuenta el fot\u00f3grafo peruano Marco Garro, \u201cpara que despu\u00e9s de una semana o dos semanas de trabajar gratuitamente te den uno o dos d\u00edas para poder ingresar y sacar el oro que puedas. Es como una suerte de esclavitud moderna.\u201d\n\nLa pregunta que nos hacemos todos y que el fot\u00f3grafo le hizo a los mineros es: \u00bfc\u00f3mo saber si esos d\u00edas efectivamente se va a encontrar oro? \u201cAlgunos me contaron que hab\u00eda muchas historias sobre la fortuna, de mineros que de un d\u00eda para otro en uno de esos dos d\u00edas encontraron mucho otro, o que excavando le ca\u00eda una roca de un kilo de oro. Otras historias contaban que hab\u00edan encontrado una veta, y la ocultaban para poder explotarla en esos d\u00edas que les permit\u00eda el cachorreo.\u201d\n\nTodo esto suced\u00eda, sobre todo, en lugares de extracci\u00f3n ilegal, en los que los mineros trabajan en condiciones precarias. Donde existe la trata de personas. Pero tambi\u00e9n donde los mineros comparten la sensaci\u00f3n de que no hay m\u00e1s opciones. Esa, quiz\u00e1,es una idea que tambi\u00e9n rodea otros espacios mineros. Se calcula que entre 1496 (momento desde el cual se tienen registros) y 2013, en el pa\u00eds se han extra\u00eddo 117.7 millones de onzas, algo as\u00ed como 3,336 toneladas. Hoy en d\u00eda, este producto representa el 60% de las exportaciones totales del Per\u00fa. La importancia de este metal es innegable, y su historia ha atravesado la de este territorio. Sin embargo, algo de oscuridad y misterio rodea la producci\u00f3n de oro y ese ha sido el tema que m\u00e1s ha interesado al peruano Marco Garro.\n\nGarro ha dedicado varios a\u00f1os a la investigaci\u00f3n y la documentaci\u00f3n fotogr\u00e1fica de la miner\u00eda en su pa\u00eds. El inter\u00e9s naci\u00f3 cuando tuvo una asignaci\u00f3n que lo llev\u00f3 a conocer  Cerro de Pasco, un asentamiento minero a 290 kil\u00f3metros de Lima. \u201cSe trata de una ciudad cuyos habitantes tienen grandes problemas de contaminaci\u00f3n de plomo en la sangre y hay mucha contaminaci\u00f3n ambiental\u201d, cuenta Marco. Lo que m\u00e1s le impact\u00f3 era que hasta ese momento no sab\u00eda de la existencia de Cerro de Pasco. \u00bfC\u00f3mo era posible si se trataba de un lugar cercano y adem\u00e1s \u00e9l era una persona relativamente informada? Descubrir eso le llev\u00f3 a indagar por otros casos de miner\u00eda en su pa\u00eds. As\u00ed, ha desarrollado proyectos sobre las infancias en las minas, la transformaci\u00f3n de los paisajes naturales y sociales, la mina m\u00e1s alta en el mundo. \n\nEn 2018 inici\u00f3 El oro que heredamos, el oro que so\u00f1amos, un proyecto centrado en diferentes facetas de este metal. Para la relaci\u00f3n establecida con el oro en la \u00e9poca prehisp\u00e1nica, el fot\u00f3grafo fue al norte de Per\u00fa, a la cuna de la civilizaci\u00f3n Moche. \u201cEllos fueron los grandes metal\u00fargicos del Per\u00fa antiguo. Utilizaban el oro de manera sagrada como elemento de representaci\u00f3n de la divinidad\u201d.\n\nDespu\u00e9s fue a Cusco donde trabaj\u00f3 el tema de la Conquista y Colonia. \u201cMe interesaba ver c\u00f3mo el oro se empez\u00f3 a entretejer en la cultura hispana e Inca. La evangelizaci\u00f3n que fue uno de los elementos de la conquista utiliz\u00f3 el pan de oro en sus im\u00e1genes sagradas.\u201d La \u00faltima parte, en la que trabaj\u00f3 la extracci\u00f3n contempor\u00e1nea del oro, la hizo en los Andes y la Amazon\u00eda peruanas.\n\nLas b\u00fasquedas de Garro giran en torno al oro en t\u00e9rminos extractivos. Para \u00e9l, la forma que ha tomado la miner\u00eda legal o ilegal en su pa\u00eds, implica un choque cultural. \u201cLa tierra en el Per\u00fa tiene un significado ancestral s\u00faper fuerte\", explica. \"En las culturas ind\u00edgenas, t\u00fa puedes extraer de la tierra para darle luego una bendici\u00f3n o una gratificaci\u00f3n, o sea, hay un intercambio. Pero la extracci\u00f3n de recursos es b\u00e1sicamente extraer y extraer y no dar nada a cambio. Hablo de extracci\u00f3n de oro, pero tambi\u00e9n hay plata, cinc, plomo, petr\u00f3leo.
