Gerardo Suter creates micro-stories from archive images, photographs recovered from social networks, and historical documents. He aims to create an immense polyhedral portrait of migration movements on the continent. In this interview, the Argentine artist reflects on the violent reality of human trafficking and the hypocrisy of governments that both punish and economically benefit from this phenomenon. Suter also talks about the evolution of his thinking around images and the internet’s impact on his creative process.

Five hundred thirteen undocumented migrants<\/span><\/a>\u00a0crowded into two containers on the southern border of Mexico: this surreal image, captured in 2011 by a Mexican immigration service X-ray camera and that went around the world, was the trigger for a large-scale project that Argentine artist Gerardo Suter has been developing over the past decade. Its name is neoTropic, a term Suter borrows from biogeography and is used to identify the tropical region of the American continent.<\/span><\/p>\n

The word conveys a sense of virgin nature, perhaps dangerous: it brings to mind the absence of law in an environment where predatory behavior prevails. We are not far from what happens in the immense migratory corridor of Latin America that flows into the border between Mexico and the United States. Violence and abuse, whether by human trafficking mafias or border patrolling authorities, is an everyday reality affecting millions.<\/span><\/p>\n

The United States has the most international migrants: there are 51 million, according to the\u00a0<\/span>International Organization for Migration’s 2022 report<\/span><\/a>. Twenty-five million come from Latin America and the Caribbean. According to data from the\u00a0<\/span>WOLA organization<\/span><\/a>, the majority are of Mexican, Guatemalan, Salvadoran, or Honduran origin. Mexico is a particular case: it is the second country in the world with the most emigrants (11 million), surpassed only by India (almost 18 million).<\/span><\/p>\n

neoTropic<\/span><\/em>\u00a0is Suter’s response – necessarily unfinished and insufficient, a permanent work-in-progress – to this situation that claims lives, separate families, or forces people to live in fear. It is also a lucrative business: according to the migrants who appeared in the 2011 X-ray, the vast majority of whom were Guatemalan, the journey had cost them $7,000 each.<\/span><\/p>\n

Gerardo Suter (Buenos Aires, 1957) holds a Ph.D. from the Universidad Polit\u00e9cnica de Valencia in Art: Production and Research (audiovisual languages and social culture). He began his creative work in 1976 in the field of photography. Since 1990 his interest has focused on developing proposals for specific sites where the still and cinematic image is linked to other media, such as sound or text, and architecture becomes the final support of the work. In 2010 he coined the term expanded image, a concept he uses as a starting point for his current transmedia installation projects.<\/span><\/p>\n

He is currently developing\u00a0<\/span>neoTr\u00f3pico<\/span><\/em>, a project that officially began in 2017 but is thematically linked to previous works around the theme of forced displacement in Latin America. At the center of these investigations is the representation of the other: the foreigner, the undocumented, the displaced, the migrant, and the clandestine. The grand ambition of\u00a0<\/span>neoTr\u00f3pico<\/span><\/em>\u00a0lies in the fact that it draws on 500 years of material: it combines recent news about immigrants with texts by Fray Bartolom\u00e9 de las Casas and Joseph Conrad; there are also references to Theodor de Bry’s illustrated version of the<\/span>\u00a0Brev\u00edsima Relaci\u00f3n de la Destrucci\u00f3n de las Indias<\/span><\/em>, as well as to Edward James’ records of his kingdom in Xilitla,\u00a0<\/span>stills<\/span><\/em>\u00a0from the film\u00a0<\/span>Apocalypse Now<\/span><\/em>\u00a0and videos from the night cameras that sweep the borders.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For Suter, the living conditions of undocumented migrants reflect the central conflicts of the contemporary world: their displacements for survival are a consequence of the pressing situations experienced in their countries of origin and the obscene asymmetries of power and money between social classes and territories. Walking through tunnels, hidden in various means of transportation, they are little visible, but countless victims of a globalized world where everything seems to be at the click of a button, but borders are more guarded than ever.<\/span><\/p>\n

neoTr\u00f3pico<\/span><\/em>\u00a0is also a test of the possibilities of the digital image by one of the notorious figures of photographic experimentation in Latin America. Famed for his original use of the enlarger, chemicals, paper, and the entire development process during the 1990s, Suter has moved from physically altering the photographic image to working from data and content downloaded from the internet. In this conversation, he discusses his creative methods without losing sight of the human drama that motivates him to continue producing an eternally expansive body of work.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although the photographic image is at the center of your work, you often use other people’s photos that you recontextualize and other resources such as video and audio. How do you define your relationship with photography, then? Do you still consider yourself a photographer at this point?\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

I think I have stopped being just a photographer to work with the image in a completely different way. I wouldn’t want to use the term “post-photography.” From a theoretical point of view, I could describe my recent activity by discussing the use of images that circulate on the web and are practically all in the public domain. What interests me are images devoid of the idea of authorial photography. I am interested in recovering the essence of photography or, in any case, of this type of image, which are documents without artistic pretensions, visual documents that I think are very important to examine and reuse. My work has traversed many places in photography. And always – although it is another word I don’t like – in experimentation with the image. But what I do now has little to do with the photographic purity that I may have adhered to in the 1990s, that idea of constructed photography. In my recent projects, I have set aside my authorial character as a producer of primary images to be more interested in being a kind of image collector. And what also interests me is building narratives that put contemporary ideas in dialogue with stories from other historical periods. In<\/span>\u00a0neoTr\u00f3pico<\/span><\/em>, for example, there are many references to Fray Bartolom\u00e9 de las Casas or Theodor de Bry’s lithographs.<\/span><\/p>\n

NeoTr\u00f3pico<\/span><\/em>\u00a0is a unique project in your production, as it encompasses or is thematically related to several of your other recent works, such as the series\u00a0<\/span>Origen y Destino<\/span><\/em>. What interested you in developing this project?\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

NeoTr\u00f3pico<\/span><\/em>\u00a0is a compilation of violence in Latin America, mainly linked to forced displacement. I intend to construct timeless stories, insisting on the repetition of many events and the continuous violence towards the population in Latin America. And the violence that often has to do with extractive strategies, economic problems, or organized crime.<\/span><\/p>\n

I use photographs of migrants or records made by security services in the countries. They are often images produced by “migrant hunters” on the border between Mexico and the United States. To a certain extent, they are images that are clandestine or sneak out of the migration service: night shots, infrared shots, shots made with drones, or with the cameras that police officers sometimes wear on their chests. They are usually very raw, first-hand images. And once they are released and begin circulating on the internet \u2014 which generally involves some infraction or crime \u2014 those documents have no authorship, or when they do, it is that of the institution that produces them.<\/span><\/p>\n

For example, I was recently struck by images from El Salvador. It’s impressive: the transfer of two thousand “gang members,” as they call them, to a high-security prison with 40,000 people. The photographic record shows the entire transfer and all the work of subjugating the prisoners: we see them handcuffed, shaven, in white underwear, unable to walk upright. And these images are being produced by the government of El Salvador itself.<\/span><\/p>\n

How did this project start, and where does your interest in migration come from?\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Since working in photography, I have always been linked to historical themes for many reasons. One is my education: I studied political economy at a public university in Mexico. My primary field of education and approach to reality is the social sciences. Another reason is my history as a migrant: I was born in Buenos Aires and came to Mexico in the seventies; I have been living here ever since. So there is a personal matter of seeking to understand, as Facundo Cabral would say, that “I am not from here nor there.” Migration also interests me because it coincides with powerful political moments in the region. Not all exoduses are linked to the project of finding a better life, but often there are urgent political reasons to migrate.<\/span><\/p>\n

On the other hand, reviewing my other projects, they all have little to do with this topic. In the late nineties, I was awarded a Rockefeller grant to develop a project related to the use of a container and questioned what happens at the Mexico\/US border. That project, called Transitus, was the first straightforward approach in my activity to migration. Later, in 2015, I did another project at the Vigo Photobiennale in Spain, where I worked with a container and X-rays that I collected in a hospital in Galicia. What motivated that second work was seeing on the news in 2011\u00a0<\/span>X-ray images<\/span><\/a>\u00a0of two containers carrying 513 people, taken at the Mexico-Guatemala border by the migration service. That terrible image triggered a series of ideas in me from which I began to build, and it has been expanding.<\/span><\/p>\n

Finally, in September 2017, I had a planned installation at the Laboratorio Arte Alameda here in Mexico, which would be a new exploration of this topic. Still, it coincided with an earthquake, and the exhibition had to be suspended. That was the somewhat accidental birth of\u00a0<\/span>neoTropic<\/span><\/em>. It was an exciting opportunity because I had just completed my doctoral thesis on the notion of “expanded image,” This was the first time I was going to put that idea into practice.<\/span><\/p>\n

That has to do, among other things, with putting photographs without authorship in dialogue. Tell me about the micro-stories that you composed based on that material.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

These micro-stories are part of a book that has later jumped into the exhibition space in different ways: as an object, as well as projections, or as large-format photographs. Now I am interested in developing the performative aspect of telling the stories and presenting the project in different forums with different audiences. This means that\u00a0<\/span>neoTr\u00f3pico<\/span><\/em>\u00a0is not only the book or the exhibition, but it encompasses all the media that allow me to build and enrich the narrative.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0I imagine you came across images that surprised you among those taken by the migrants themselves.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Of course! For example, where else will I find images of migrants cramped inside trucks or of how they travel hidden in a vehicle? Everyone has a cell phone. In the shelters in Mexico, there are tables full of power outlets where they plug in their phones. It’s the first thing they do when they arrive because it’s how they communicate with their families. And often, they sell the photos to Associated Press, Getty, or Reuters. They are unmistakable images because they have the 16:9 cell phone format, which full-frame cameras do not have. And you see that they are not photographers because they do not care about aesthetics or the decisive moment: it is a record with a different meaning. But they are vital images: among other reasons, because no journalist could have taken them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That makes me think of another project I have, based on the news of the abandonment of a trailer with forty-eight teenagers locked up in a place in the jungle of Mexico. They, fortunately, managed to get out, and there are images of these people sleeping in the middle of the jungle. Who took those photos, if not them? All that material is like an omnipresent, all-powerful eye constantly recording them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I think post-photography is an invention of theory to justify many things that are inconsequential to me. Discussing whether something is or is not post-photography does not interest me. The problem is not there; it is not a theoretical problem. It is a fundamental problem of how photographs are being used and what they are for. So I don’t find the discussion helpful, at least at the moment, even though I wrote a treatise on it. [laughs]<\/span><\/p>\n

Well, that’s curious, that’s why I’m asking you.<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I am more interested in the practice. But there are theoretical questions that I find important. Ultimately, authorship is being questioned: to think that the photographer is only the one who clicks is a bit limited.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0And yet, you no longer consider yourself a photographer.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Well, look, I take screenshots. But I have training as a photographer, which informs my work when I recompose the images. It’s something I’ve learned over many years. In that sense, I’m not so interested in the moment of capture itself but in the post-production moment, the space where post-photography moves, that second moment many critics have called the “second shutter.” <\/span><\/p>\n

But the moment of capture, which I moved away from for a long time, has started to interest me from another angle. For me, there are two parallel worlds: the virtual world and the real world. Things that are very similar to the real world happen in the virtual world, but I can’t photograph them. What I can do is take screenshots. Are you interested in the use of images generated by artificial intelligence at all?\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Among the curiosities I do, I coordinate a graduate program at the university, and some of my students have started working with these technologies. Let’s say that I resist a little leaving the creative process in other hands – or other circuits or different algorithms. I believe that is the last thing we have left as human beings, so I am a little scared of the idea of \u200b\u200bsomething thinking for me, creating for me. Also, images made with artificial intelligence do not interest me because they are not real, and I am increasingly interested in reality. How we capture it doesn’t matter. But we need to recognize reality in some way. In my opinion, those artificial images that could be considered within the spectrum of post-photography have more to do with post-truth. They are not at the level of creativity, at least not yet, but are at the media level, where it is essential to determine what is true and what is not, what happened, and what is an illusion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Maybe I’ll change my mind. I have a student who is working on his origin as a mestizo in a town in Mexico; for that, he is interviewing his grandfather, who tells him stories of which there are no photos. So, based on that story, he is producing images with artificial intelligence. I have seen the result, and I thought they were photos he had taken with a 6-by-6 camera. They look outstanding; they are black-and-white images of some fields in the United States where his grandfather worked. There, the use of this technique may make sense. But then I think about the dangers of this being used in another way and of us losing control. Not only because it is a technology that lends itself to manipulation but also because I am worried that producing ideal images will make reality unnecessary, making us unaware of it. That’s why I’m so interested in using photos that are not even intended, that move as far away as possible from the notion of authorship that contaminates the world of the image.<\/span><\/p>\n

Su nombre es <\/span>neoTr\u00f3pico<\/span><\/i>, un t\u00e9rmino que Suter toma prestado de la biogeograf\u00eda, y que se utiliza para identificar la regi\u00f3n tropical del continente americano. <\/span>\n\nLa palabra transmite una sensaci\u00f3n de naturaleza virgen, tal vez peligrosa: trae a la mente la ausencia de ley en un entorno donde priman las conductas predatorias. No estamos lejos de lo que ocurre efectivamente en el inmenso corredor migratorio de Am\u00e9rica Latina que desemboca en la frontera entre M\u00e9xico y Estados Unidos. Ah\u00ed, la violencia y el abuso, ya sea por parte de las mafias de traficantes de personas o de las autoridades que patrullan las fronteras, es una realidad cotidiana que afecta a millones de personas.<\/span>\n\nEstados Unidos es el pa\u00eds del mundo al que llegan m\u00e1s migrantes internacionales: hay 51 millones, seg\u00fan el <\/span>informe de la Organizaci\u00f3n Internacional de las Migraciones de 2022<\/span><\/a>. 25 millones provienen de Am\u00e9rica Latina y el Caribe. La mayor\u00eda son de origen mexicano, guatemalteco, salvadore\u00f1o u hondure\u00f1o, seg\u00fan datos de <\/span>la organizaci\u00f3n WOLA.<\/span><\/a> M\u00e9xico es un caso especial: se trata del segundo pa\u00eds con m\u00e1s emigrantes en el mundo (11 millones), superado solo por la India (casi 18 millones). <\/span>\n\nneoTr\u00f3pico<\/span><\/i> es la respuesta de Suter \u2014una respuesta necesariamente inacabada e insuficiente, un <\/span>work-in-progress<\/span><\/i> permanente\u2014 ante esta situaci\u00f3n que cobra v\u00edctimas mortales, separa familias u obliga a las personas a vivir en el miedo. Es adem\u00e1s un negocio redondo: seg\u00fan declararon los migrantes que aparecen en la radiograf\u00eda de 2011, en su gran mayor\u00eda guatemaltecos, el viaje les hab\u00eda costado 7.000 d\u00f3lares a cada uno.<\/span>\n\nGerardo Suter (Buenos Aires, 1957) es Doctor por la Universidad Polit\u00e9cnica de Valencia en el programa Arte: Producci\u00f3n e Investigaci\u00f3n (lenguajes audiovisuales y cultura social). Inici\u00f3 su trabajo creativo en 1976 en el campo de la fotograf\u00eda. A partir de 1990 su inter\u00e9s se ha centrado en el desarrollo de propuestas para sitios espec\u00edficos, donde la imagen fija y cinem\u00e1tica se vinculan a otros medios, como el sonido o el texto, y la arquitectura se convierte en soporte final de la obra. En el centro de estas investigaciones est\u00e1 la representaci\u00f3n del otro: el extranjero, el indocumentado, el desplazado, el migrante, el clandestino. La ambici\u00f3n extravagante de <\/span>neoTr\u00f3pico <\/span><\/i>estriba en que se nutre de 500 a\u00f1os de material: combina noticias recientes sobre inmigrantes con textos de Fray Bartolom\u00e9 de las Casas y Joseph Conrad; hay tambi\u00e9n referencias a la versi\u00f3n ilustrada por Theodor de Bry de la <\/span>Brev\u00edsima relaci\u00f3n de la destrucci\u00f3n de las Indias<\/span><\/i>, as\u00ed como a los registros de Edward James de su reino en Xilitla, <\/span>stills<\/span><\/i> del film <\/span>Apocalypse Now<\/span><\/i> y videos de las c\u00e1maras nocturnas que barren las fronteras. <\/span>\n\nPara Suter, las condiciones de vida de los migrantes indocumentados dan cuenta de los conflictos centrales del mundo contempor\u00e1neo: sus desplazamientos de sobrevivencia son una consecuencia de las situaciones apremiantes que se viven en sus pa\u00edses de origen, as\u00ed como de las asimetr\u00edas obscenas de poder y dinero entre clases sociales y territorios. Caminando por t\u00faneles, escondidos en diversos medios de transporte, son v\u00edctimas poco visibles pero innumerables de un mundo globalizado donde todo parece estar al alcance de un click, pero las fronteras est\u00e1n m\u00e1s vigiladas que nunca.<\/span>\n\nneoTr\u00f3pico<\/span><\/i> es, adem\u00e1s, un testeo de las posibilidades de la imagen digital por parte de una de las figuras notorias de la experimentaci\u00f3n fotogr\u00e1fica en Am\u00e9rica Latina. Afamado por su uso original de la ampliadora, los qu\u00edmicos, el papel y todo el proceso de revelado durante la d\u00e9cada de los noventa, Suter ha pasado de alterar la imagen fotogr\u00e1fica f\u00edsicamente a trabajar a partir de datos y contenido descargado de Internet. No quisiera utilizar el t\u00e9rmino \u201cpostfotograf\u00eda\u201d. Desde el punto de vista te\u00f3rico, podr\u00eda describir mi actividad reciente hablando del uso de im\u00e1genes que circulan en la red y que son pr\u00e1cticamente todas del dominio p\u00fablico. Lo que me interesa son las im\u00e1genes despose\u00eddas de esta idea que nosotros manejamos de fotograf\u00eda autoral. Me interesa recuperar lo esencial de la fotograf\u00eda o, en todo caso, de este tipo de im\u00e1genes, que son realmente documentos sin una pretensi\u00f3n art\u00edstica, documentos visuales que me parece muy importante poder examinar y reutilizar. <\/span>\n\nMi trabajo ha transitado por much\u00edsimos lugares en la fotograf\u00eda. Y siempre \u2014aunque es otra palabra que no me gusta mucho\u2014 en el campo de la experimentaci\u00f3n con la imagen. Pero lo que hago actualmente ya no tiene mucho que ver con el purismo fotogr\u00e1fico al cual me pude haber adherido en la d\u00e9cada de 1990, esa idea de la fotograf\u00eda construida. En mis proyectos recientes he dejado de lado mi car\u00e1cter autoral como productor de las im\u00e1genes primarias, para interesarme m\u00e1s por ser una especie de recolector de im\u00e1genes. Y lo que me interesa, tambi\u00e9n, es construir narrativas que pongan en di\u00e1logo im\u00e1genes contempor\u00e1neas con relatos de otros per\u00edodos hist\u00f3ricos. Mi intenci\u00f3n es construir historias atemporales, en el sentido de insistir en la repetici\u00f3n de muchos hechos, en la continua violencia hacia la poblaci\u00f3n en Am\u00e9rica Latina. Y una violencia que muchas veces tiene que ver con estrategias extractivistas, con problemas econ\u00f3micos o con el crimen organizado.<\/span>\n\nEl material que utilizo son fotograf\u00edas tomadas por los propios migrantes o registros hechos por los servicios de seguridad de los pa\u00edses. Muchas veces son im\u00e1genes que producen los cazamigrantes en la frontera entre M\u00e9xico y Estados Unidos. Son im\u00e1genes hasta cierto punto clandestinas o que se cuelan del servicio de migraci\u00f3n: tomas nocturnas, tomas infrarrojas, tomas hechas con drones o con las c\u00e1maras que los polic\u00edas llevan a veces en el pecho. Suelen ser im\u00e1genes muy crudas, muy de primera mano. Y una vez que se liberan y que empiezan a circular en la red \u2014lo que supone generalmente alg\u00fan tipo de infracci\u00f3n o delito\u2014 esos documentos no tienen autor\u00eda, o cuando la tienen es la de la propia instituci\u00f3n que los produce.<\/span>\n\nPor ejemplo, me llamaron la atenci\u00f3n hace poco unas im\u00e1genes que vienen de El Salvador. Es impresionante: el traslado de dos mil pandilleros, como los llaman ellos, a una c\u00e1rcel de alta seguridad donde caben 40.000 personas. El registro fotogr\u00e1fico da cuenta de todo el traslado y de todo el trabajo de sometimiento de los prisioneros: los vemos esposados, rapados, en calzoncillo blanco, sin la posibilidad de caminar erguidos. Discutir si algo es o no es postfotograf\u00eda no me interesa. El problema no est\u00e1 ah\u00ed, no es un problema te\u00f3rico, es un problema de fondo, de c\u00f3mo se est\u00e1n utilizando las fotograf\u00edas, para qu\u00e9 sirven. Una de ellas es mi formaci\u00f3n: estudi\u00e9 econom\u00eda pol\u00edtica en la universidad p\u00fablica, aqu\u00ed en M\u00e9xico. Entonces mi campo primario de formaci\u00f3n y de aproximaci\u00f3n a la realidad son las ciencias sociales. Otra raz\u00f3n es mi propia historia como migrante: nac\u00ed en Buenos Aires y vine a M\u00e9xico en los setentas; desde entonces vivo aqu\u00ed. As\u00ed que hay una cuesti\u00f3n personal de buscar entender, como dir\u00eda Facundo Cabral, que \u201cno soy de aqu\u00ed ni soy ni all\u00e1\u201d. La migraci\u00f3n me interesa, adem\u00e1s, porque coincide con momentos pol\u00edticos muy fuertes en la regi\u00f3n. No todos los \u00e9xodos est\u00e1n vinculados al proyecto de encontrar una mejor vida, sino que a menudo hay razones pol\u00edticas urgentes para migrar. <\/span>\n\nPor otro lado, haciendo una revisi\u00f3n de mis otros proyectos, todos tienen que ver un poco con este tema. A finales de los noventas me dieron una beca Rockefeller para desarrollar un trabajo que ten\u00eda que ver con el uso de un contenedor, y que cuestionaba lo que sucede en la frontera M\u00e9xico\/Estados Unidos. Ese proyecto, que se llam\u00f3 <\/span>Transitus<\/span><\/i>, fue la primera aproximaci\u00f3n clara en mi actividad al tema de la migraci\u00f3n. Despu\u00e9s, en 2015, hice otro proyecto en la Fotobienal de Vigo, en Espa\u00f1a, donde trabaj\u00e9 con un contenedor y con radiograf\u00edas que recolect\u00e9 en un hospital de Galicia. Lo que motiv\u00f3 ese segundo trabajo fue el hecho de haber visto en un noticiero, en 2011, <\/span>im\u00e1genes de rayos X<\/span><\/a> de dos contenedores que transportaban a 513 personas, tomadas en la frontera de M\u00e9xico con Guatemala por el servicio de migraci\u00f3n. Esa imagen terrible deton\u00f3 en m\u00ed una serie de ideas a partir de las cuales empec\u00e9 a construir, y es algo que se ha ido expandiendo.<\/span>\n\nFinalmente, en septiembre de 2017 ten\u00eda programado un trabajo de instalaci\u00f3n en el Laboratorio Arte Alameda, ac\u00e1 en M\u00e9xico, que iba a ser una nueva exploraci\u00f3n sobre este tema, pero coincidi\u00f3 con un terremoto y la exposici\u00f3n se tuvo que suspender. Digamos que ese fue el nacimiento, un poco accidentado, de <\/span>neoTr\u00f3pico<\/span><\/i>. Cu\u00e9ntame de los microrrelatos que compusiste a partir de ese material.  <\/b>\n\nEsos microrrelatos forman parte de un libro que despu\u00e9s ha saltado al espacio expositivo de distintas maneras: primero, en tanto objeto, pero tambi\u00e9n como proyecciones o como fotograf\u00edas de gran formato. Ahora me interesa desarrollar el aspecto perform\u00e1tico de contar las historias, presentando el proyecto en distintos foros, con distintos p\u00fablicos. Esto significa que <\/span>neoTr\u00f3pico<\/span><\/i> no es solamente el libro o la exposici\u00f3n, sino que engloba todos los medios que me permiten construir el relato e irlo enriqueciendo. <\/span>\n\nImagino que te encontraste con im\u00e1genes que te sorprendieron entre aquellas tomadas por los propios migrantes.<\/b>\n\n\u00a1Claro! Por ejemplo, \u00bfen qu\u00e9 otro sitio voy a encontrar im\u00e1genes del hacinamiento de los migrantes dentro de los camiones, o del modo en que viajan escondidos en un veh\u00edculo? Es que todos llevan celular. En los albergues de M\u00e9xico hay unas mesas llenas de tomacorrientes donde enchufan sus tel\u00e9fonos. Es lo primero que hacen al llegar porque es la v\u00eda de comunicaci\u00f3n con sus familias. Y muchas veces lo que ocurre es que ellos mismos venden las fotos a Associated Press, a Getty o a Reuters. Son im\u00e1genes inconfundibles porque tienen el formato de celular con proporciones de 16:9, que no tienen las c\u00e1maras full frame. Y ves que no son fot\u00f3grafos porque obviamente no cuidan la parte est\u00e9tica, no les importa el momento decisivo: es un registro que tiene un sentido distinto. Pero son im\u00e1genes sumamente importantes: entre otras razones, porque ning\u00fan periodista hubiera podido tomarlas.<\/span>\n\nEsto me hace pensar en otro proyecto que tengo, que est\u00e1 basado en la noticia del abandono de un tr\u00e1iler con cuarenta y ocho adolescentes encerrados en un lugar en la selva de M\u00e9xico. Ellos felizmente lograron salir y hay im\u00e1genes de estas personas durmiendo en el medio de la selva. \u00bfQui\u00e9n tom\u00f3 esas fotos, sino son ellos? Me da curiosidad saber por qu\u00e9 evitas usar esa palabra.<\/b>\n\nMe parece que la postfotograf\u00eda es un invento de la teor\u00eda para justificar muchas cosas que para m\u00ed son intrascendentes. Discutir si algo es o no es postfotograf\u00eda no me interesa. El problema no est\u00e1 ah\u00ed, no es un problema te\u00f3rico, es un problema de fondo, de c\u00f3mo se est\u00e1n utilizando las fotograf\u00edas, para qu\u00e9 sirven. Entonces creo que la discusi\u00f3n, al menos en estos momentos, a m\u00ed no me sirve. A pesar de que yo hice un tratado sobre eso [risas].<\/span>\n\nPues s\u00ed, es curioso, por eso te lo pregunto.<\/b>\n\nDigamos que me interesa m\u00e1s la pr\u00e1ctica. Pero hay preguntas te\u00f3ricas que definitivamente me parecen importantes. En el fondo, lo que se est\u00e1 cuestionando es la autor\u00eda: pensar que el fot\u00f3grafo es solamente el que hace clic me parece un poco limitado.<\/span>\n\nY sin embargo, ya no te consideras fot\u00f3grafo. <\/b>\n\nPues mira, yo hago fotos de pantalla. Digamos que yo me resisto un poco a dejar en otras manos \u2014o en otros circuitos, o en otros algoritmos\u2014 el proceso creativo. Creo que eso es lo \u00faltimo que nos queda como seres humanos, entonces me asusta un poco la idea de que algo piense por m\u00ed, que cree por m\u00ed.<\/span>\n\nAdem\u00e1s, las im\u00e1genes hechas con inteligencia artificial no me interesan porque no son reales y a m\u00ed cada vez me interesa m\u00e1s la realidad. C\u00f3mo la capturemos no importa. Pero necesitamos reconocer la realidad de alguna manera. En mi opini\u00f3n, esas im\u00e1genes artificiales que podr\u00edan ser consideradas dentro del espectro de la postfotograf\u00eda, tienen m\u00e1s que ver con la postverdad. No est\u00e1n en el nivel de la creatividad, al menos no por ahora, sino que est\u00e1n en el nivel medi\u00e1tico en el que es importante determinar qu\u00e9 es cierto y qu\u00e9 no, qu\u00e9 sucedi\u00f3 realmente y qu\u00e9 es una ilusi\u00f3n.<\/span>\n\nTal vez cambie de parecer. Tengo un estudiante que est\u00e1 haciendo un trabajo acerca de su origen como mestizo en una localidad de M\u00e9xico, y para ello est\u00e1 entrevistando a su abuelo que le cuenta historias de las cuales no hay fotos. Entonces, a partir de ese relato, \u00e9l est\u00e1 produciendo im\u00e1genes con inteligencia artificial. He visto el resultado y debo decir que yo en realidad pens\u00e9 que eran fotos que \u00e9l hab\u00eda tomado con una c\u00e1mara de 6 por 6. Se ven muy bien, son unas im\u00e1genes en blanco y negro de unos campos en Estados Unidos donde hab\u00eda trabajado su abuelo. Ah\u00ed puede ser que s\u00ed tenga sentido el uso de esta t\u00e9cnica. <\/span>\n\nPero luego pienso en los peligros de que esto sea utilizado de otra manera y de que perdamos totalmente el control. No solo porque es una tecnolog\u00eda que se presta a la manipulaci\u00f3n, sino que me preocupa que producir im\u00e1genes ideales vuelva innecesaria la realidad, haga que la desconozcamos.
