Estacionarios (Extremophiles) was the project that Ecuadorian photographer Isadora Romero carried out in early 2019 in Antarctica after an unexpected invitation from the Ecuadorian Antarctic Institute. For two months, she lived in extreme situations in a hostile environment, with shallow temperatures and the constant feeling that the environment was unsuitable for humans. The trip and everything she experienced during it made her wonder about the relationship between human beings and the natural environment surrounding them.<\/p>\n

One day in January 2019, Ecuadorian photographer Isadora Romero was on a film set in Riobamba, in the middle of the Ecuadorian Andes, more than 200 km from Quito. She took a break and checked her cell phone; she had several missed calls from an unknown number. She assumed it was from the bank offering her some credit, so she ignored the calls. Shortly after, she received a message that read, “Hello, this is Commander Coral from the Ecuadorian Antarctic Institute, and I have been trying to reach you.” Isadora, of course, was shocked. She didn’t know there was an Ecuadorian Antarctic Institute, she didn’t understand why they were looking for her, and she began to doubt that all this was true.<\/p>\n

She called the number she had, and Commander Coral told her that they had seen her profile on the internet and that he wanted to propose to her to be part of the XXIII expedition that would leave in a month. The trip would be made with the military and scientists. The idea was that Isadora could develop a photographic project in Ecuador’s base in Antarctica and then deliver part of the photographs taken. She had to present a project the following week, take some tests and arrive in Chile a few days before starting the expedition.<\/p>\n

He warned her that the environmental conditions were very hostile and that she would have no internet connection. He informed her that she would be in one of the most dangerous seas in the world and that she would have to sleep tied to a bed. Finally, he asked her how she was doing in conditions of confinement because she would have to be isolated for two months, sharing space with very different people. Isadora did not understand anything, Commander Coral wanted an answer immediately, and she did not know what to say. She asked for some time to think; the commander gave her 10 minutes.<\/p>\n

The artist called her mother, she expected her mother to dissuade her, but the opposite happened. Her mother told her enthusiastically: “You have to go. It’s as if you were invited on a trip to the moon.”<\/p>\n

“The whole thing was too funny to me, and I wondered why life had put me in this situation,” says the photographer. “I started to do a lot of research on Antarctica, and I began to understand that it was very crazy that there is this utopian place in which some countries have agreed that it is a place for the good of humanity, a place for science, a place that has no borders and in which exploitation is prohibited, no, if you were saying how was it possible that we achieve these agreements as humanity and the rest of the world is shit, right?”<\/p>\n

So, she decided that if she traveled with scientists, she would do her scientific observation, but not of animals or environmental conditions. “Since all these scientists were going to observe their rocks, their little animals, the soil, I decided that I wanted to watch what was going on with humans in Antarctica, why we were there, what we were doing there, what was the relationship between humans and Antarctica, why we were there, what we were doing there, what was the relationship between humans and Antarctica, and what was the relationship between humans and Antarctica, why we were there, what we were doing there, what was the relationship with the environment.” And so the Estacionarios (Extremophiles) project was born.<\/p>\n

Expedition XXIII turned out to be an exciting trip. First, because it had a playful touch: Isadora dedicated herself to making her collections of elements. She collected details such as the oceanographer’s hair, the artist’s tears, and plastic waste in little bottles that she later exhibited. She wanted to play with the idea of scientific nomenclature and created her own.<\/p>\n

At the same time, she understood how scientific processes work. “I understood that every scientist was as crazy as any artist as they can explain the world to you through a pebble or water or something.” And at the same time, she understood the military world. She discovered that military discipline was, in a sense, “necessary” to build and survive in a space like the Institute’s base in Antarctica.<\/p>\n

Isadora felt like she was watching baby penguins in one of those nature programs. Then an animal would come out of nowhere and kill them, and blood would be everywhere. On the other hand, she saw the most beautiful scenery she could imagine. It was like always being on edge, leading her to ask herself some questions. “I feel like it put me also in a situation of being on par with the other species. It’s a place where you see that the other species live in a way, and that leads you to understand what your role of yours is in that space.”<\/p>\n

One of those questions concerned the human need to appropriate places and to make their presence explicit. With noises, symbols, with institutions. “I realized that this utopia, this place that belongs to no one, is constantly haunted by all the exploitative interests of countries that are in processes of territorial reclamation.”<\/p>\n

So, then, the photographer managed to answer one of the first questions she asked herself when she was invited to Antarctica, what is Ecuador doing there? In Antarctica, there are natural resources that have yet to be exploited; many of them are assumed that, at some point, they will end up in the continental territories.<\/p>\n

Currently, seven countries are making territorial claims over Antarctica: Chile, Argentina, New Zealand, Australia, France, England, and Norway. Together they have made a treaty in which they recognize the independence of the place, and therefore there are no borders, nor is exploitation allowed. The treaty will end in 2048. In the meantime, although there are no borders, the military and scientific bases of each country are like small national satellites: to enter each one, you must have special permits and present your passport, and each one has its flag and its soccer team.<\/p>\n

The experience also allowed him to examine science and art critically. “In Antarctica, it is very evident how all these state mechanisms work, whose cover is science and the good of humanity, but behind it are all these exploitative interests. For example, a lot of research is done to see what would be the most sustainable way to fish, the most sustainable way to do tourism…”<\/span><\/p>\n

Science has played a fundamental role in the constitution of nation-states. As Isadora says, it’s not only about philanthropic purposes. It’s not so innocent. And art is the same. “For me, this trip was one of surrendering and saying: there is no innocence in this species; there is not. I still can’t figure out this interest in domination, appropriation, and cataloging. I had to accept that I am part of this too; obviously, I didn’t want to do my work with innocence, and that’s why the project is also full of irony.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Many current discourses place the human species as the culprit of the worrying situation of the planet. Many of them are correct; the responsibility is enormous. But, the solution does not lie in imagining the world without humans. “That romantic thing doesn’t seem to be the answer, but to put the real interests, the real actors, on the table. The discussion about climate protection is still very superficial, and from art, of course, I feel that we can break that up a bit and generate other kinds of conversations.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Instituto Ant\u00e1rtico Ecuatoriano. Durante dos meses vivi\u00f3 situaciones l\u00edmite en un ambiente hostil, con temperaturas  muy bajas y la sensaci\u00f3n constante de que el entorno no es adecuado para humanos. El viaje y todo lo que vivi\u00f3 en \u00e9l la llev\u00f3 a preguntarse por la relaci\u00f3n entre los seres humanos y el entorno natural que les rodea.<\/span>\n\nPor Marcela Vallejo<\/span>\n\n[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=\"4.15\" _module_preset=\"default\" custom_padding=\"50px||50px||false|false\" locked=\"off\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"]\n\nUn d\u00eda de enero del 2019 la fot\u00f3grafa ecuatoriana Isadora Romero estaba en un set de grabaci\u00f3n en Riobamba, en medio de los Andes ecuatorianos, a m\u00e1s de 200 km de Quito. Tom\u00f3 un descanso y revis\u00f3 su celular, ten\u00eda varias llamadas perdidas de un n\u00famero desconocido. Asumi\u00f3 que era del banco, para ofrecerle alg\u00fan cr\u00e9dito, as\u00ed que decidi\u00f3 ignorar las llamadas. Poco despu\u00e9s, recibi\u00f3 un mensaje que dec\u00eda: \u201cHola, soy el comandante Coral del Instituto Ant\u00e1rtico ecuatoriano, y he estado intentando comunicarme con usted\u201d. Isadora, por supuesto, qued\u00f3 sorprendida, no sab\u00eda que exist\u00eda ning\u00fan Instituto Ant\u00e1rtico Ecuatoriano, no sab\u00eda por qu\u00e9 la estaban buscando, y empez\u00f3 a dudar de que todo eso fuera verdad. <\/span>\n\nLlam\u00f3 al n\u00famero que ten\u00eda y el comandante Coral le cont\u00f3 que hab\u00edan visto su perfil en internet y que quer\u00eda proponerle hacer parte de la expedici\u00f3n XXIII que saldr\u00eda dentro de un mes. El viaje se har\u00eda con militares y cient\u00edficos, y la idea era que Isadora pudiera desarrollar un proyecto fotogr\u00e1fico en la base que Ecuador tiene en la Ant\u00e1rtica y luego, simplemente, entregara parte de las fotograf\u00edas realizadas. Ella ten\u00eda que presentar un proyecto la semana siguiente, hacerse algunos ex\u00e1menes y llegar a Chile unos d\u00edas antes de iniciar la expedici\u00f3n.<\/span>\n\nLe advirti\u00f3 que las condiciones ambientales del lugar eran muy hostiles y que no tendr\u00eda conexi\u00f3n a internet. Le inform\u00f3 que estar\u00eda en uno de los mares m\u00e1s peligrosos del mundo y que tendr\u00eda que dormir atada a una cama. Finalmente, le pregunt\u00f3 c\u00f3mo le iba en condiciones de confinamiento, porque tendr\u00eda que estar dos meses aislada, compartiendo espacio con personas muy diferentes. Isadora no entend\u00eda nada, el comandante Coral quer\u00eda una respuesta de inmediato y ella no sab\u00eda qu\u00e9 decir. Le pidi\u00f3 un tiempo para pensar, el comandante le dio 10 minutos.<\/span>\n\nLa artista llam\u00f3 a su mam\u00e1, esperaba que ella la disuadiera, pero pas\u00f3 todo lo contrario. En principio, porque ten\u00eda un toque l\u00fadico: Isadora se dedic\u00f3 a hacer sus propias recolecciones de elementos. Recogi\u00f3, en frasquitos que luego expuso, elementos como: cabello de ocean\u00f3grafa, l\u00e1grimas de artista, desecho pl\u00e1stico. Quer\u00eda jugar con la idea de la nomenclatura cient\u00edfica y ella misma cre\u00f3 una propia.<\/span>\n\nAl mismo tiempo, fue entendiendo c\u00f3mo funcionan los procesos cient\u00edficos. \u201cEntend\u00ed que cada cient\u00edfico estaba tan loco como cualquier artista como que te pueden explicar el mundo a trav\u00e9s de una piedrita, o del agua o de alguna cosa.\u201d Y, al mismo tiempo, fue entendiendo el mundo militar y descubri\u00f3 que la disciplina militar era, en cierto sentido, \u201cnecesaria\", para poder construir y sobrevivir en un espacio como la base del Instituto en la Ant\u00e1rtida.<\/span>\n\nIsadora sent\u00eda que estaba en un programa de esos de naturaleza, viendo ping\u00fcinos beb\u00e9s, luego sal\u00eda un animal de la nada y los mataba y hab\u00eda sangre por todo lado. Por otra parte, ella ve\u00eda los paisajes m\u00e1s bellos que pudiera imaginar. Era como estar siempre al l\u00edmite y esto la llev\u00f3 a hacerse algunas preguntas. \u201cSiento que me puso tambi\u00e9n en una situaci\u00f3n de estar a la par con las otras especies. Con ruidos, con s\u00edmbolos, con instituciones. \u201cMe di cuenta de que esta utop\u00eda, de este lugar que no es de nadie, est\u00e1 constantemente acechada por todos los intereses de explotaci\u00f3n de los pa\u00edses que est\u00e1n en procesos de reclamaci\u00f3n territorial.\u201d <\/span>\n\nAs\u00ed, entonces, la fot\u00f3grafa logr\u00f3 responder a una de las primeras preguntas que se hizo cuando la invitaron a la Ant\u00e1rtida \u00bfqu\u00e9 hace el Ecuador en ese lugar? En la Ant\u00e1rtida hay recursos naturales que no han sido explotados, muchos de ellos se asume que en alg\u00fan momento se van a acabar en los territorios continentales. <\/span>\n\nActualmente, hay 7 pa\u00edses que est\u00e1n haciendo reclamaci\u00f3n territorial sobre la Ant\u00e1rtida: Chile, Argentina, Nueva Zelanda, Australia, Francia, Inglaterra y Noruega. Juntos han hecho un tratado en el que reconocen la independencia del lugar y por eso no hay fronteras, ni se permite la explotaci\u00f3n. El tratado se acabar\u00e1 en 2048. Por ejemplo, muchas investigaciones se hacen para ver cu\u00e1l ser\u00eda la forma m\u00e1s sostenible de pesca, la forma m\u00e1s sostenible de hacer turismo\u2026\u201d<\/span>\n\nLa ciencia ha jugado un papel fundamental en la constituci\u00f3n de los estados nacionales, como dice Isadora, no solo se trata de fines filantr\u00f3picos, no es tan inocente. Y el arte igual. \u201cPara m\u00ed este viaje fue una  de rendirme y decir: no hay inocencia en esta especie, no hay. Algo que todav\u00eda no logro resolver es cu\u00e1l es este inter\u00e9s de dominaci\u00f3n,  de apropiaci\u00f3n, de catalogaci\u00f3n. Muchos de ellos est\u00e1n en lo cierto, la responsabilidad es enorme. Pero, probablemente, la soluci\u00f3n no est\u00e1 en imaginar el mundo sin humanos. \u201cEsa cosa rom\u00e1ntica tampoco me parece que es la respuesta, pero s\u00ed poner sobre la mesa cu\u00e1les son los intereses reales, los actores reales.
