Ricardo B\u00e1ez is recognized as a disruptive creator: his works not only test the classic conceptions of a photobook but also seek to reconfigure the relationship between design and photography. In fact, in the opinion of the prolific Venezuelan editorial designer, his authorship is as vital as that of the photographers he collaborates with. We spoke with Baez about his most important works, the uses of archiving and artificial intelligence in his creative process, and the end of “visual books” as we know them today.<\/p>\n

“When I think of an idea for a book, I think of how that idea can be systematized: I want it to be expressed in the color, in the format, in the typography, in the compositions, in the overall graphic feel of the book. It’s what I call design thinking,” says Ricardo Baez. For the Venezuelan designer, “an idea that is not systematized is just an occurrence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0At 39, Baez is a member of the AGI (Alliance Graphique Internationale). His work in the field of photobooks has earned him numerous awards: among them, the Silver Medal at the Latin American Design Awards (Peru, 2020), the Paris Photo-Aperture Foundation First PhotoBook Award 2017 (USA\/France. 2017), and the 1st Dummy Award Kassel (Germany, 2016). His most famous designs are\u00a0<\/span>Monsanto: A Photographic Investigation<\/span><\/em><\/a>\u00a0by Mathieu Asselin,\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Fotograf\u00eda impresa en Venezuela<\/span><\/em><\/a>\u00a0by Sagrario Berti, and\u00a0<\/span>Curso\/Discurso<\/span><\/em><\/a>, a hybrid volume of essay and visual elaboration in which he shares authorship with Gonzalo Golpe and Alejandro Marote.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0“The speed with which we read images in the digital world is great,” he reflects. “And I think visual books-and, not just photobooks-help us change that reading rhythm: they are a kind of brake against the unbridled rush of images.” Baez increasingly appreciates that different way of reading: “That could be the great contribution of visual books in an era in which the book itself seems to be an object out of place and out of time.”\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0In this conversation, Baez values the role of design and new technologies in photography’s transformations in recent decades. He also reflects on the works that marked his development as a designer and openly discusses the friction he has encountered when sharing authorship with photographers.<\/span><\/p>\n

What initially attracted you to the world of the photobook?\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0I’ve always been interested in photography. When I was 17, I founded a digital fanzine about skateboarding<\/em> with my brother in which we both took photos, wrote, and did the design. It was very interesting because it allowed me to test what I wanted to do with my life and understand if I was a designer, editor, photographer, or writer. That’s how I discovered that what I was most interested in was editorial design because it is an activity that allows me to shape a publication by influencing all its variables, from the visual to the written content: everything must work in unison.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

From that experience, I was in permanent contact with photography: first, I worked as a producer for many photographer friends, and then I started to design photo books. That’s when I realized that the technical reproduction of a photograph opens an immense field of possibilities. It is not the same, for example, to reproduce an image in its original color, to ink it in a specific color, or reproduce it in Riso, offset, or photocopy. And in photography, it is not the same as in painting, where there is always the fear of distorting the original piece because what is the original in photography? The negative? In analog photography, what about digital photography? Is it the RAW? It doesn’t matter. What matters is that indeterminacy can be productive. And every book I design allows me to ask myself again what reproduction can bring to photography for better communication of the idea.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When I approach a project, I first ask myself: what do we want to communicate, and how far do we want to take this project to expand photography? What interests me about editorial design is working with images that somebody will transform according to context, function, or intention.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Let’s talk about the projects that have been important in your development, especially those that changed your understanding of photobook design<\/span><\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The big project that made me think I should dedicate myself as much as possible to designing this type of book is M<\/span>onsanto: A Photographic Investigation<\/span><\/em>\u00a0by Mathieu Asselin, not only because of the importance of the subject and the author but also because it was with this project that I realized the capacity of the photobook to integrate design and photography radically. In addition, since this book, the author has changed his way of conceiving each project to the point that he now works more from design thinking than photography.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0It was an exciting evolution because originally, it was a photographic reportage that, although it used archive images, was 80% author’s photography. Then the project accumulated other types of material, such as data from the Stock Exchange. And that is expressed through the design. So, beyond the recognition that the book has received and beyond the\u00a0<\/span>subject\u00a0<\/span><\/a>that is so strong and so important to be known, this book meant a lot to me because it put me in a situation that allowed me to prove -to me, to the author and the whole work team- to what extent design can be the element that articulates the general conception of a photo book.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0That is always under discussion regarding how much design is acceptable. Sometimes, design is a hindrance, or the designer is an egomaniac who wants to assert their ideas above all else. I don’t see it that way. Design thinking is a contribution as long as it operates with the author’s consent.<\/span><\/p>\n

I understood all that with this book, which is why it is so important to me. It is also essential for another reason: I have been transferring that form of design around a complex investigation to books of a more timid kind of a different kind. I always motivate authors to deepen their research and use all the expressive elements that can help communicate ideas. For example, last year, I designed a book called\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>H is for Hemp<\/span><\/em><\/a>\u00a0by German researcher Maren Krings, whose message is that hemp has enormous potential as an industrial element and can help mitigate climate change. It is a book made up of photographs taken by the author but also includes a significant amount of information gathered by Krings over decades of work as an activist. It was quite a challenge to give shape to that project, and the solution we found was to turn it into a kind of dictionary or user’s manual. It seemed to us that this was the most appropriate: the texts follow an alphabetical order that gives an account of the potential of hemp in areas such as construction, gastronomy, etc. We abandoned the idea of a narrative sequence to orient the material toward direct use.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Finally, I would like to discuss a third book that has yet to be published but is already in print and has just\u00a0<\/span>won a prize\u00a0<\/span><\/a>as a mock-up at Fiebre Dummy Award Madrid. It is by Danish author Julia Mejnertsen and is called\u00a0<\/span>HUN<\/span><\/em>, which means “she” in Danish. The story relates to Mejnertsen’s mother, a professional animal hunter in Africa. It creates an intense conflict for the author because she adores her mother and sees her as a hero, but she understands that what her mother does is abhorrent to many people. And the book is very introspective, even to the point that it leads one to question why I believe what I believe. And, above all, why we should respect those who don’t think like we do. In other words, it is a book about intolerance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0But it is also the first project in which I have been so involved personally. It also generated many conflicts for me because I disagree with the killing of animals, but at the same time, I eat meat, I kill cockroaches, and, in short, it led me to question many things. And it also led me to ask myself to what extent the emotional connection motivates me to get involved as an author in a project because I also feel that I am an author within the work team. And if I don’t get emotionally involved, I can’t generate anything that I do.<\/span><\/p>\n

“In the world of photography, there is a certain fear of letting in elements that come from other fields and that may infringe on the authorship of the photographers. The central question when approaching a project is: what best communicates a certain idea? If the photographer considers that his authorship should be in the foreground, it is a problem, and the communication may be truncated. For me, dialogue should take precedence. The idea is to generate collective situations in which the idea of authorship takes a back seat.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

Can we talk about the production aspects of this latest book? I’m especially interested if you can share with us some of the ins and outs of your creative process.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Every element of\u00a0<\/span>HUN<\/span><\/em>\u00a0has been worked on in-depth, from the typography, in which I went to a font house in Denmark to see what a Danish letter looks like. And we have incorporated a great variety of material: there are texts generated by ourselves, there are questions, and I even worked with an illustrator (Mauricio Vivas) who I asked to draw what an elephant sees when it is hunted. There you begin to understand that the production process of a photobook is almost like that of a film: it’s not something that involves one or two people; there is a whole team that can include a curator, a colorist, an illustrator, a writer, etc. And those are the projects that interest me most now, the ones that give me the possibility of having that permanent dialogue with people from other specialties, and not only with the author because the author is not always the most objective person when it comes to deciding what to do with the material. In\u00a0<\/span>HUN,\u00a0<\/span><\/em>the process lasted two years, during which we did many interviews with the author; she even recorded several hours of video conversations with her mother. There was a great deal of analysis to arrive at this book.<\/span><\/p>\n

One aspect that catches my attention in your work is your interest in the history of the photobook. You have even made photobooks about photobooks.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0To date, there are already about fifty books that compile photobooks. I have had the opportunity to make two:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Fotograf\u00eda impresa en Venezuela<\/span><\/em><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>CLAP! 10\u00d710 Contemporary Latin American Photobooks: 2000-2016<\/span><\/em><\/a>. These kinds of publications are crucial. I use them constantly, and they help me a lot in my research. Now I’m working on a new project deconstructing a famous book here in Venezuela called\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Sistema Nervioso<\/span><\/em><\/a>\u00a0by Barbara Br\u00e4ndli, John Lange, and Rom\u00e1n Chalbaud. Martin Parr has reviewed that book; it has been included in photobook exhibitions; it appears in\u00a0<\/span>Horacio Fernandez’s book\u00a0<\/span><\/a>on the Latin American photobook; that is, it is a milestone in the history of the photobook in the region. And the particularity of\u00a0<\/span>Sistema Nervioso<\/span><\/em>\u00a0is that Br\u00e4ndli, the photographer, gave Lange, the designer, her photos, but she did not participate in the process. So the book is completely orchestrated from the design. Lange put together a sequence in which she distorted the images, cropped them, and flipped them, turning the photograph into graphics. And then she commissioned the text to Chalbaud, a playwright, who conceived the work as a performance in which he made notes on the model, then closed the book and never opened it again.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0It’s a very crazy way of working, a method that I could never apply. But I got in touch with the C&FE Collection, which acquired all the original material of Sistema Nervioso, and even with the printer of the book (the master printer\u00a0<\/span>Javier Aizpurua<\/span><\/a>), who explained to me the bizarre techniques that Lange used in that section. My idea was to make a book that compares Br\u00e4ndli’s original photographs with the final book. I think it is a fascinating work, mainly because the history of the photobook has usually been approached from photography but not design. And I believe it is essential to highlight that other aspect because whatever they say if there is no design, there is no book.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0You were telling me that the photobook designer, from your perspective, is also an author. I imagine that this inevitably generates tensions with the photographer. Is that so? Are those tensions productive?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0In the world of photography, there is a certain hermeticism, a certain fear of letting in elements that come from other fields and may infringe on photographers’ authorship. I want to speak frankly about this subject, which is a very delicate one. The central question when approaching a project is: what communicates a particular idea best? If the photographer considers that his authorship should be in the foreground, it is a problem because the communication may be truncated. Then, dialogue should take precedence. And the idea is to generate collective situations in which the idea of authorship takes second place.<\/span><\/p>\n

I am an author not because I impose my points of view but because I put forward situations that complement another author’s ideas. I see it as a sum of authorship. To illustrate this point in class, I always use McLuhan’s book\u00a0<\/span>El Medio es el Mensaje<\/span><\/em>\u00a0as an example. It is a book in which McLuhan collaborated with the designer Quentin Fiore. Without Fiore’s contribution, it would not have had the impact it had because it is 90% image. There was a conjunction of authorship to achieve better communication.<\/span><\/p>\n

I want to end this interview by talking about the current state of the photobook. How do you perceive its development in Latin America?\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Something that impressed me a lot when researching for the book\u00a0<\/span>CLAP! 10\u00d710 Contemporary Latin American Photobooks: 2000-2016<\/span><\/em>\u00a0is the quality of the work being done in the continent despite how difficult distribution is and how little recognition there is in this field. And I must say, moreover, that since I finished that book until today, many new publishers, workshops, and events have emerged that have made the photobook much more established in the region. What I want to highlight, above all, is the variety of forms that the photobook has adopted: it has gone to all extremes, from the fanzine to more elaborate publications.<\/span><\/p>\n

In Brazil, for example, photo books of the highest production quality are being produced. That is an essential achievement because the book industry in Latin America has always needed to be more technically deficient. In other words, new printers and production approaches are emerging thanks to this type of project. Another interesting case is the Gato Negro publishing house in Mexico, which produces its books. The important thing is that there is an upturn in this field, and I believe that there is no longer that self-imposed limit that we must copy a foreign production model to be able to do things but that we are doing things the way we want and the way we can.<\/span><\/p>\n

Do you consider that there exists a vanguard of the photobook today?\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

It’s a complex question that I would have to answer in parts because the photobook is made up of different components. And it is necessary to talk first about the avant-garde of photography because a photobook cannot be avant-garde if its content does not follow the same path.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One development that I find interesting is the use of open-access archives that belong to private collections or museums. Today it is possible to obtain images of the highest quality and create technically impeccable publications. Another field that attracts me is the generation of ideas with artificial intelligence, which will pose new challenges for the photo book. I am working on a project in which practically everything has been generated with artificial intelligence, and it is a children’s book. By this, I mean that the development of these technologies is not predetermined but will be a consequence of the use we make of them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Something that greatly affects my work is the idea that possibly photography generated with a camera can no longer be avant-garde. There are books made entirely of archival photographs that tell a story or communicate an idea better than a book made with photos by an author. And the avant-garde of the photobook is perhaps just that: an exploration not of what the\u00a0<\/span>photograph says but of how the photograph narrates.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

On the other hand, the technologies that make it possible to generate images from text make me think that it no longer makes much sense to speak of “photobooks.” The term “photobook” implies that the publication includes photographs, but nothing is self-evident in this field anymore. I prefer the time “visual books,” which is less restrictive. This reminds me of a Gato Negro publication:\u00a0<\/span>Nostalgia<\/span><\/a>, by David Horvitz, a book about photography that does not include photographs but only descriptions of digital photos that the author has deleted from his hard drive. It may not technically be a photo book, but to me, it’s an excellent photobook that rethinks the idea of the image and the idea of the photo. And I think the future of this kind of publication goes that way, too: it is to get rid of that purist idea of photography.<\/span><\/p>\n

Es lo que llamo un <\/span>pensamiento de dise\u00f1o<\/span><\/i>\u201d, dice Ricardo B\u00e1ez. Para el dise\u00f1ador venezolano, \u201cuna idea que no se sistematiza, es tan s\u00f3lo una ocurrencia\u201d. <\/span>\n\nA sus 39 a\u00f1os, B\u00e1ez es miembro de la AGI (Alliance Graphique Internationale) y su trabajo en el \u00e1mbito del fotolibro le ha valido numerosos premios: entre ellos, la Medalla de plata en los Latin American Design Awards (Per\u00fa, 2020), el Premio de la Fundaci\u00f3n Paris Photo-Aperture First PhotoBook 2017 (EE. UU.\/Francia. 2017) y el 1er Premio Dummy Award Kassel (Alemania, 2016). Entre sus dise\u00f1os m\u00e1s famosos se encuentran t\u00edtulos como <\/span>Monsanto: A Photographic Investigation<\/span><\/i><\/a>, de Mathieu Asselin; <\/span>Fotograf\u00eda impresa en Venezuela<\/span><\/i><\/a>, de Sagrario Berti; y <\/span>Curso\/discurso<\/span><\/i><\/a>, un volumen h\u00edbrido de ensayo y elaboraci\u00f3n visual en el que comparte la autor\u00eda con Gonzalo Golpe y Alejandro Marote. <\/span>\n\n\u201cLa velocidad con la que leemos las im\u00e1genes en el mundo digital es muy grande\u201d, reflexiona. \u201cY creo que los libros visuales \u2014y no solo los fotolibros\u2014 nos ayudan a cambiar ese ritmo de lectura: son una especie de freno ante el desenfreno de im\u00e1genes\u201d. B\u00e1ez aprecia cada vez m\u00e1s esa manera distinta de leer: \u201cEse podr\u00eda ser el gran aporte de los libros visuales en una \u00e9poca en la que el libro en s\u00ed mismo pareciera ser un objeto fuera de lugar y fuera de tiempo\u201d. <\/span>\n\nEn esta conversaci\u00f3n, B\u00e1ez valora el papel del dise\u00f1o y de las nuevas tecnolog\u00edas en las transformaciones que ha experimentado la fotograf\u00eda en las \u00faltimas d\u00e9cadas. De hecho, a los 17 a\u00f1os fund\u00e9 con mi hermano un fanzine digital sobre <\/span>skateboarding<\/span><\/i> en el que ambos tom\u00e1bamos fotos, escrib\u00edamos y hac\u00edamos el dise\u00f1o. Fue algo muy interesante porque me permiti\u00f3 probar qu\u00e9 era lo que quer\u00eda hacer con mi vida y entender si yo era dise\u00f1ador, editor, fot\u00f3grafo o escritor. As\u00ed descubr\u00ed que lo que m\u00e1s me interesaba era el dise\u00f1o editorial, porque es una actividad que me permite darle forma a una publicaci\u00f3n incidiendo en todas sus variables, desde lo visual hasta el contenido escrito: todo debe funcionar al un\u00edsono. <\/span>\n\nA partir de esa experiencia estuve en contacto permanente con la fotograf\u00eda: trabaj\u00e9 primero como productor para muchos amigos fot\u00f3grafos, y luego empec\u00e9 a dise\u00f1ar fotolibros. Ah\u00ed me di cuenta de que la reproducci\u00f3n t\u00e9cnica de una fotograf\u00eda abre un campo inmenso de posibilidades. No es lo mismo, por ejemplo, reproducir una imagen en su color original o entintarla de un color determinado; o reproducirla en Riso, en offset o en fotocopia. Y en la fotograf\u00eda no ocurre lo mismo que en la pintura, en donde siempre existe el temor de distorsionar la pieza original Porque \u00bfcu\u00e1l es el original en fotograf\u00eda? \u00bfEl negativo? Tal vez en la fotograf\u00eda anal\u00f3gica, pero \u00bfy en la fotograf\u00eda digital? \u00bfEs el RAW? No importa realmente. Lo que importa es que esa indeterminaci\u00f3n puede ser productiva. Y me parece que cada libro que dise\u00f1o me da la oportunidad de plantearme nuevamente la pregunta por lo que la reproducci\u00f3n es capaz de aportar a la fotograf\u00eda para una mejor comunicaci\u00f3n de la idea. <\/span>\n\nDicho de otro modo: al abordar un proyecto, lo primero que me planteo es lo siguiente: qu\u00e9 queremos comunicar y hasta d\u00f3nde quiere llegar este proyecto en t\u00e9rminos de expansi\u00f3n de la fotograf\u00eda. Eso es lo que me interesa del dise\u00f1o editorial: trabajar con im\u00e1genes que se van a ir transformando seg\u00fan su contexto, su funci\u00f3n o su intenci\u00f3n. <\/span>\n\nHablemos de los proyectos que han sido importantes en tu desarrollo, sobre todo aquellos que cambiaron tu forma de entender el dise\u00f1o de fotolibros.<\/b>\n\nEl gran proyecto que me hizo pensar que deber\u00eda dedicarme lo m\u00e1s posible a dise\u00f1ar este tipo de libros es <\/span>Monsanto: A Photographic Investigation<\/span><\/i>, de Mathieu Asselin. No solo por la importancia del tema y del autor, sino porque fue con este proyecto que me di cuenta de la capacidad que tiene el fotolibro de integrar radicalmente el dise\u00f1o y la fotograf\u00eda. Adem\u00e1s, a partir de este libro, el propio autor cambi\u00f3 su manera de concebir cada proyecto, al punto que ahora trabaja m\u00e1s desde el pensamiento del dise\u00f1o que desde la fotograf\u00eda. <\/span>\n\nFue una evoluci\u00f3n interesante porque originalmente se trataba de un reportaje fotogr\u00e1fico que, si bien usaba im\u00e1genes de archivo, era en un 80% fotograf\u00eda de autor. Luego el proyecto empez\u00f3 a acumular otro tipo de material, como data de la Bolsa de Valores. Y eso se expresa a trav\u00e9s del dise\u00f1o. Entonces, m\u00e1s all\u00e1 de los reconocimientos que ha tenido el libro y m\u00e1s all\u00e1 incluso del <\/span>tema<\/span><\/a> que es tan fuerte y tan importante que se conozca, ese libro signific\u00f3 mucho para m\u00ed porque me puso en una situaci\u00f3n que me permiti\u00f3 probar \u2014a m\u00ed, al autor y todo al equipo de trabajo\u2014 hasta qu\u00e9 punto el dise\u00f1o puede ser el elemento que articula la concepci\u00f3n general de un fotolibro. <\/span>\n\nEso es algo que siempre est\u00e1 en discusi\u00f3n en nuestro campo: qu\u00e9 cantidad de dise\u00f1o es aceptable. A veces parece que el dise\u00f1o es un estorbo o que el dise\u00f1ador es un eg\u00f3latra que quiere hacer valer sus ideas por encima de todo lo dem\u00e1s. Yo no lo veo as\u00ed. Siento que el pensamiento del dise\u00f1o es un aporte, siempre y cuando opere con el consentimiento del autor. <\/span>\n\n[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row Lo es tambi\u00e9n por otra raz\u00f3n: porque esa forma de dise\u00f1o en torno a una investigaci\u00f3n compleja la he ido trasladando a libros de otro corte, de un corte m\u00e1s t\u00edmido, por as\u00ed decirlo. Yo siempre trato de motivar a los autores para que profundicen sus investigaciones y echen mano de todos los elementos expresivos que puedan ayudar a comunicar las ideas. Por ejemplo, el a\u00f1o pasado dise\u00f1\u00e9 un libro que se llama <\/span>H is for Hemp<\/span><\/i><\/a>, de la investigadora alemana Maren Krings, cuyo mensaje es que el c\u00e1\u00f1amo tiene un enorme potencial como elemento industrial, y que puede ayudar a mitigar el cambio clim\u00e1tico. Es un libro que est\u00e1 hecho de fotograf\u00edas tomadas por la autora, pero que tambi\u00e9n incluye una cantidad importante de informaci\u00f3n reunida por Krings durante d\u00e9cadas de trabajo como activista. Fue todo un reto darle forma a ese proyecto, y la soluci\u00f3n que encontramos fue convertirlo en una especie de diccionario o de manual de uso. La historia est\u00e1 relacionada con la madre de Mejnertsen, que es una cazadora profesional de animales en \u00c1frica. Esto le genera un conflicto fuerte a la autora porque ella adora a su madre, la ve como una h\u00e9roe, pero entiende que para mucha gente en el mundo, lo que su madre hace es detestable. Y el libro es muy introspectivo, incluso al punto que lo lleva a uno a cuestionarse por qu\u00e9 creo en lo que creo. Y, sobre todo, por qu\u00e9 debemos respetar a quienes no piensan como nosotros. Es decir, es un libro sobre la intolerancia. <\/span>\n\nPero es adem\u00e1s el primer proyecto en el que yo me he involucrado tanto en t\u00e9rminos personales. A m\u00ed tambi\u00e9n me gener\u00f3 muchos conflictos porque claramente no estoy de acuerdo con que maten animales, pero al mismo tiempo como carne, mato cucarachas y en fin, me llev\u00f3 a cuestionarme un mont\u00f3n de cosas. Y hemos incorporado una gran variedad de material: hay textos generados por nosotros mismos, hay preguntas, incluso trabaj\u00e9 con un ilustrador (Mauricio Vivas) al que le ped\u00ed que dibujara lo que ve un elefante cuando es cazado. Ah\u00ed empieza uno a entender que el proceso de producci\u00f3n de un fotolibro es casi como el de una pel\u00edcula: no es algo que involucre a una o dos personas, hay todo un equipo que puede incluir a un curador, un colorista, un ilustrador, un escritor, etc. Y esos son los proyectos que m\u00e1s me interesan ahora, los que me dan la posibilidad de tener ese di\u00e1logo permanente con personas de otras especialidades, y no solo con el autor, porque el autor no siempre es la persona m\u00e1s objetiva a la hora de decidir qu\u00e9 hacer con el material. En <\/span>HUN<\/span><\/i> el proceso dur\u00f3 dos a\u00f1os durante los cuales hicimos muchas entrevistas con la autora; incluso ella grab\u00f3 varias horas de video de conversaciones con su madre. Yo he tenido la oportunidad de hacer dos: <\/span>Fotograf\u00eda impresa en Venezuela<\/span><\/i><\/a> y <\/span>CLAP! 10\u00d710 Contemporary Latin American Photobooks: 2000-2016<\/span><\/i><\/a>. Para m\u00ed esta clase de publicaciones es muy importante, las uso constantemente, me ayudan mucho en mis investigaciones. Ahora estoy trabajando en un nuevo proyecto que es una deconstrucci\u00f3n de un libro muy famoso ac\u00e1 en Venezuela que se llama <\/span>Sistema nervioso<\/span><\/i><\/a>, de Barbara Br\u00e4ndli, John Lange y Rom\u00e1n Chalbaud. Ese libro ha sido rese\u00f1ado por Martin Parr, ha sido incluido en exposiciones de fotolibros, aparece en <\/span>el libro de Horacio Fern\u00e1ndez<\/span><\/a> sobre el fotolibro latinoamericano; es decir, es un hito en la historia del fotolibro en la regi\u00f3n. Y lo particular de <\/span>Sistema nervioso<\/span><\/i> es que Br\u00e4ndli, la fot\u00f3grafa, le entreg\u00f3 a Lange, el dise\u00f1ador, sus fotos, pero ella no particip\u00f3 en el proceso. De modo que el libro est\u00e1 completamente orquestado desde el dise\u00f1o. Lange arm\u00f3 una secuencia en la que distorsion\u00f3 las im\u00e1genes, las cort\u00f3, las volte\u00f3, convirtiendo la fotograf\u00eda en gr\u00e1fica. Y luego le encarg\u00f3 el texto a Chalbaud, un dramaturgo, quien concibi\u00f3 el trabajo como una suerte de performance en la que hizo anotaciones en la maqueta, luego cerr\u00f3 el libro y no lo volvi\u00f3 a abrir. <\/span>\n\nEs una manera muy loca de trabajar, un m\u00e9todo que yo jam\u00e1s podr\u00eda aplicar. Pero me puse en contacto con la Colecci\u00f3n C&FE, que adquiri\u00f3 todo el material original de <\/span>Sistema nervioso<\/span><\/i>, e incluso con el impresor del libro (el maestro impresor Javier Aizpurua<\/a>), quien me explic\u00f3 las t\u00e9cnicas bizarras que us\u00f3 Lange en ese apartado. Mi idea fue hacer un libro que compara las fotograf\u00edas originales de Br\u00e4ndli con el libro final. Creo que es un trabajo muy interesante, sobre todo porque la historia del fotolibro ha sido abordada usualmente desde la fotograf\u00eda, mas no desde el dise\u00f1o. Y creo que es importante resaltar ese otro aspecto, porque digan lo que digan, si no hay dise\u00f1o, no hay libro.<\/span>\n\n \n\nMe dec\u00edas que el dise\u00f1ador de fotolibros, desde tu perspectiva, es tambi\u00e9n un autor. Imagino que esto, inevitablemente, genera tensiones con el fot\u00f3grafo. \u00bfEs esto as\u00ed? \u00bfSon productivas esas tensiones?<\/b>\n\nEn el mundo de la fotograf\u00eda hay cierto hermetismo, cierto temor a dejar pasar elementos que vienen de otros campos y que pueden vulnerar la autor\u00eda de los fot\u00f3grafos. Quiero hablar francamente sobre ese tema que es muy delicado. Para m\u00ed la cuesti\u00f3n central al abordar un proyecto es: \u00bfqu\u00e9 comunica mejor una determinada idea? Si el fot\u00f3grafo considera que su autor\u00eda es lo que debe estar en primer plano, es un problema, porque es posible que la comunicaci\u00f3n se trunque. Entonces para m\u00ed debe primar el di\u00e1logo. Y lo ideal es generar situaciones colectivas en las que la idea de la autor\u00eda pasa a un segundo plano.<\/span>\n\nYo me siento un autor no porque impongo mis puntos de vista, sino porque planteo situaciones que complementan las ideas de otro autor. Lo veo como una suma de autor\u00edas. Para ilustrar este punto en clase, siempre pongo como ejemplo el libro de McLuhan: <\/span>El medio es el mensaje<\/span><\/i>. Es un libro en el que McLuhan colabor\u00f3 con el dise\u00f1ador Quentin Fiore, y que claramente, sin el aporte de Fiore, no habr\u00eda tenido el impacto que tuvo, porque es 90% imagen. Y debo decir, adem\u00e1s, que desde que termin\u00e9 ese libro hasta hoy, han surgido muchas nuevas editoriales, talleres y eventos que han hecho que el fotolibro se asiente mucho m\u00e1s en la regi\u00f3n. Lo que quiero resaltar, sobre todo, es la variedad de formas que ha adoptado el fotolibro: se ha ido hacia todos los extremos, desde el fanzine hasta las publicaciones m\u00e1s elaboradas.<\/span>\n\nEn Brasil, por ejemplo, se est\u00e1n haciendo fotolibros de una alt\u00edsima calidad de producci\u00f3n. Esto es un logro importante porque la industria del libro en Latinoam\u00e9rica siempre ha tendido a ser deficiente t\u00e9cnicamente. Es decir, gracias a este tipo de proyectos est\u00e1n surgiendo nuevas imprentas y nuevos planteamientos de producci\u00f3n. Otro caso interesante es el de la editorial <\/span>Gato Negro<\/span><\/a> en M\u00e9xico, que produce sus propios libros. Y tal vez sea necesario hablar primero de la vanguardia de la fotograf\u00eda, porque creo que un fotolibro no puede ser de vanguardia si su contenido no va por la misma v\u00eda. <\/span>\n

<\/h3>\nUn desarrollo que me parece interesante, por ejemplo, es el uso de archivos <\/span>open access <\/span><\/i>que pertenecen a colecciones privadas o museos. Hoy se pueden conseguir de esta forma im\u00e1genes de alt\u00edsima calidad y crear a partir de eso publicaciones t\u00e9cnicamente impecables. Otro campo que me atrae es la generaci\u00f3n de im\u00e1genes con inteligencia artificial, que creo que va a plantear nuevos retos para el fotolibro. Yo mismo estoy trabajando en un proyecto en el que pr\u00e1cticamente todo ha sido generado con inteligencia artificial, y es un libro para ni\u00f1os. Con lo que quiero decir que el desarrollo de estas tecnolog\u00edas no est\u00e1 predeterminado, sino que va a ser una consecuencia del uso que les demos. <\/span>\n

<\/h3>\nAlgo que incide mucho en mi trabajo es la idea de que posiblemente la fotograf\u00eda generada con una c\u00e1mara ya no puede ser de vanguardia. Hay libros hechos enteramente de fotograf\u00edas de archivo que cuentan mejor una historia, o comunican mejor una idea, de lo que lo har\u00eda un libro hecho con fotograf\u00edas de autor. Y la vanguardia del fotolibro es tal vez eso: una exploraci\u00f3n no de lo que<\/span> dice la fotograf\u00eda<\/span><\/i>, sino de <\/span>c\u00f3mo narra la fotograf\u00eda<\/span><\/i>. <\/span>\n

<\/h3>\nPor otro lado, las tecnolog\u00edas que permiten generar im\u00e1genes a partir de texto me llevan a pensar que ya no tiene mucho sentido hablar de \u201cfotolibros\u201d. El t\u00e9rmino \u201cfotolibro\u201d implica que esa publicaci\u00f3n incluye fotograf\u00edas, pero ya nada es evidente en este campo. Yo prefiero el t\u00e9rmino \u201clibros visuales\u201d, que es menos restrictivo. Esto me recuerda una publicaci\u00f3n de Gato Negro: <\/span>Nostalgia<\/span><\/i><\/a> de David Horvitz, un libro sobre fotograf\u00eda que no incluye fotograf\u00edas, sino solo descripciones de fotos digitales que el autor ha eliminado de su disco duro. Tal vez no sea t\u00e9cnicamente un fotolibro, pero para m\u00ed es un fotolibro buen\u00edsimo que replantea la idea de la imagen y la idea del fotolibro en s\u00ed mismo.
