In the project\u00a0<\/span>Memorias del r\u00edo<\/span><\/em>, Roc\u00edo C\u00e1rdenas documents the struggle of the indigenous community Tres Omb\u00faes, from Ciudad Evita, to preserve their customs and the memory of their ancestors. It is a work that explores uncomfortable questions about the territorial conflicts that occur in the Buenos Aires suburbs and about the debt of our societies with the original peoples devastated by the Conquest.<\/span><\/p>\n

“What do we know about our territory?” asks Argentine photographer Roc\u00edo C\u00e1rdenas. “Why does the history of Buenos Aires begin with the arrival of the Spaniard Pedro de Mendoza in 1535? Where does the name of the Matanza River come from? And why are there monuments commemorating genocides in Argentina?”<\/span><\/p>\n

In the photographic project\u00a0<\/span>Memorias del r\u00edo<\/span><\/em>, C\u00e1rdenas addresses these questions by documenting the struggle of the indigenous community Tres Omb\u00faes, from Ciudad Evita, in the Buenos Aires suburbs, made up of members of the Kolla, Diaguita, Qom, Aymara, Guaran\u00ed, Mapuche, and Quechua native peoples, among others. These people live in a disputed area where the Ezeiza III archaeological site is located, in a remnant of the ancient terraces bordering the meanders of the Matanza River. Ceramic remains and pieces of pottery, tools, and bones have been found there. For the Tres Omb\u00faes community, it is a sacred cemetery.<\/span><\/p>\n

Today, illegal real estate developments occupy 80% of this territory. The inaction of the municipal authorities is worrying: “The territories of memory are protected by law,” says Roc\u00edo. “As are archaeological sites and the rights of native peoples.”\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The site is vital, moreover, because “one of the largest unrecognized genocides in Argentine history” took place there, in the photographer’s words. The chronicler Ulrico Schmidl briefly accounts for<\/span>\u00a0this event<\/span><\/a>\u00a0on June 15, 1536, the day of Corpus Christi. At that time, the area was inhabited by the Querand\u00ed people, a nomadic people of whom little is known, as the troops of Pedro de Mendoza, the founder of Buenos Aires, annihilated them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Schmidl describes these people as a nation “of 2,000 men, women, and children, [whose] dress was like that of the Zechurg (Charr\u00faa) from the navel to the knees. […] These Carendies (Querand\u00edes) have no rooms of their own but circle the earth, like the gypsies in our country.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Roc\u00edo finds the lack of interest of Argentine society in preserving the memory of the original inhabitants of these lands disturbing. “The Argentine state is built on massacres and conquests,” she points out.<\/span><\/p>\n

“There is a concealment or an inability to recognize the dispossession of the native peoples that occurred upon the arrival of the Spaniards. Argentina must be one of the few countries where monuments to Columbus or a figure like Pedro de Mendoza remain intact. I would love to see those monuments disappear.”<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

How did the Memorias del r\u00edo project come about?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

I am from Tapiales, a town in the district of La Matanza in the province of Buenos Aires. Last year I started working with wetlands in the Ciudad Evita nature reserve in the Matanza River basin. And I started researching this river that crosses a large part of the capital city and the Buenos Aires suburbs. I wondered where its name comes from, and that’s how I met a community called Tres Omb\u00faes. They live in an archaeological site of ancestral memory, which is being occupied by illegal urban constructions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I started to visit the community to work with them, and that is how I discovered the history of the Querand\u00ed people, who settled in what is now the ancestral site of Tres Omb\u00faes. The first battle of the R\u00edo de la Plata occurred in 1536. It was a genocide. To such an extent, there were no descendants or much information left of the Querand\u00ed people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Memorias del r\u00edo<\/em> is about the history of the territory I inhabit and the Tres Omb\u00faes community’s struggle to keep their beliefs alive, and the memory of the original inhabitants of this place.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the current situation of the Tres Omb\u00faes community?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0The first time I visited them, I met Delia, my referent in the community. They welcomed me, sat around a fire, drank Mates, and told me about their problems with the other community occupying the area. It is a popular neighborhood called Puente 13. We all know about the housing problem in Argentina and that everyone has the right to a place to live. But it is also essential to preserve this land, which is a sacred site for the Tres Omb\u00faes community.<\/span><\/p>\n

What they want to do now is to build a museum and a community center where they can develop workshops. I have participated in several of these workshops where they teach pottery, for example, or how to prepare chicha, an ancestral knowledge being lost.<\/span><\/p>\n

What were you interested in capturing in this photographic series?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Above all, I was interested in capturing the community’s connection with the territory. For example, I have photos of ceremonies to the river and the land. Their connection with this site, which after so many years is still in conflict and resisting, is very intense.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Do you consider that the Argentine State has shown interest in resolving this situation?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The Argentine State needs to provide the tools and give due importance to the memory of the territory. It seems to me that there is a concealment or an incapacity to recognize the dispossession of the native peoples that occurred at the arrival of the Spaniards. Argentina must be one of the few countries where monuments to Columbus or a figure like Pedro de Mendoza remain intact. I would love to see those monuments disappear.<\/span><\/p>\n

This work is one of the inspirations for E-CO\/23], the new edition of our meeting of photographic collectives, which this year will have as its thematic axes:\u00a0<\/span>Ecologies, Territories, and Communities.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Through this call, we are interested in gathering stories of sustainable development, community movements, and ways of inhabiting the land in the community to achieve new narratives built from the plurality of collective creation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Each selected project will receive support of 5,000 euros for its production. The tasks can be presented by existing collectives or by groups of people working in collaboration for this project in an interdisciplinary way.<\/span><\/p>\n

The selected groups will participate in a collective process of production and reflection that will be accompanied by pedagogical support with specialists in the themes.<\/span><\/p>\n

Once the production stage is completed, the project results will be presented in one or more exhibitions that may rotate and on the digital platforms of Fundaci\u00f3n VIST, the AECID, and the participating Spanish Cultural Centers or the institutions they designate. Estas personas viven en una zona en disputa donde se encuentra el yacimiento arqueol\u00f3gico Ezeiza III, localizado en un remanente de las antiguas terrazas que bordeaban los meandros del r\u00edo Matanza. Ah\u00ed se han encontrado restos de cer\u00e1micas y piezas de alfarer\u00eda, herramientas y huesos. La inacci\u00f3n de las autoridades municipales es preocupante: \u201clos territorios de memoria est\u00e1n protegidos por ley\u201d, se\u00f1ala Roc\u00edo. \u201cAl igual que los sitios arqueol\u00f3gicos y los derechos de los pueblos originarios\u201d. <\/span>\n\nEl sitio es clave, adem\u00e1s, porque ah\u00ed tuvo lugar \u201cuno de los genocidios m\u00e1s grandes no reconocidos de la historia argentina\u201d, en palabras de la fot\u00f3grafa. El cronista Ulrico Schmidl <\/span>relata brevemente este acontecimiento<\/span><\/a> ocurrido el 15 de junio de 1536, el d\u00eda de Corpus Christi. En ese tiempo la zona era habitada por el pueblo Querand\u00ed, un pueblo n\u00f3mada del que se sabe poco, pues fue aniquilado por las tropas de Pedro de Mendoza, el fundador de la ciudad de Buenos Aires. <\/span>\n\nSchmidl describe a este pueblo como una naci\u00f3n \u201cde 2.000 hombres, mujeres e hijos, [cuyo] vestir era como el de los zechurg (charr\u00faa) del ombligo a las rodillas. El a\u00f1o pasado empec\u00e9 a trabajar con los humedales en la reserva natural Ciudad Evita, en la cuenca del r\u00edo Matanza. Y empec\u00e9 a investigar sobre este r\u00edo que atraviesa gran parte de la capital y del conurbano bonaerense. Me preguntaba de d\u00f3nde viene su nombre, y as\u00ed conoc\u00ed a una comunidad que se llama Tres Omb\u00faes. Viven en un sitio arqueol\u00f3gico de memoria ancestral, y que est\u00e1 siendo ocupado por construcciones urbanas ilegales. <\/span>\n\nEmpec\u00e9 a visitar a la comunidad, a trabajar con ellos, y as\u00ed fui descubriendo la historia del pueblo Querand\u00ed, que estaba asentado en lo que hoy es el sitio ancestral Tres Omb\u00faes. Ellos me recibieron, nos sentamos alrededor de un fuego, tomamos mates, y me empezaron a contar de los problemas que est\u00e1n teniendo con la otra comunidad que est\u00e1 ocupando la zona. Se trata en realidad de un barrio popular que se llama Puente 13. Todos sabemos del problema habitacional que tiene Argentina y que, efectivamente, todos tienen derecho a un lugar donde vivir. Pero tambi\u00e9n es importante preservar estas tierras que para la comunidad Tres Omb\u00faes es un sitio sagrado.<\/span>\n\nLo que ellos quieren hacer ahora es un museo y un centro comunitario donde puedan desarrollar talleres. Tengo por ejemplo fotos de ceremonias al r\u00edo, ceremonias a la tierra. Es muy intensa la conexi\u00f3n que tienen con este sitio que despu\u00e9s de tantos a\u00f1os sigue en conflicto, sigue resistiendo. <\/span>\n\n\u00bfConsideras que el Estado argentino ha mostrado inter\u00e9s en resolver esta situaci\u00f3n?<\/b>\n\nEl Estado argentino no brinda las herramientas ni le da la importancia debida a la memoria del territorio. Me parece que hay un ocultamiento o una incapacidad de reconocer el despojo de los pueblos originarios que ocurri\u00f3 a la llegada de los espa\u00f1oles. Argentina debe ser uno de los pocos pa\u00edses donde todav\u00eda se mantienen intactos los monumentos a Col\u00f3n, o a una figura como Pedro de Mendoza. Los proyectos pueden ser presentados por colectivos ya existentes o por grupos de personas que trabajen en colaboraci\u00f3n para este proyecto, de forma interdisciplinar.<\/span>\n\nLos grupos seleccionados participar\u00e1n en un proceso colectivo de producci\u00f3n y reflexi\u00f3n que contar\u00e1 con un acompa\u00f1amiento pedag\u00f3gico junto a especialistas en las tem\u00e1ticas.<\/span>\n\nUna vez finalizada la etapa de producci\u00f3n se presentar\u00e1n los resultados del proyecto en una o varias exposiciones que pueden itinerar y en las plataformas digitales de Fundaci\u00f3n VIST, de la AECID, y de los Centros Culturales de Espa\u00f1a participantes o de las instituciones que \u00e9stos designen.
