In 2019, Mexico was shaken by protests: women tired of the State’s ineffectiveness took to the streets to demand justice in cases of femicide and gender-based violence. In these marches, many scratched walls and monuments with feminist slogans. Diana Cano began to record them and realized that, shortly after the graffiti was painted, the authorities sent people to erase all the graffiti. That is how\u00a0<\/span>La Urgencia de Borrar<\/span><\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>Borr\u00e9 las Paredes de las Pintas<\/span><\/em>\u00a0were born: two projects in which the photographer tries to preserve those words’ memory (and the power).<\/span><\/p>\n

“Ni una menos, ni una muerta m\u00e1s” (Not one less, not one more dead) is the verse that gave rise to the feminist slogan #niunamenos. It was written by the poet from Ciudad Ju\u00e1rez, Susana Chavez, who in 2011 was raped and murdered in her city. She did not get to see how the rest of us would shout this slogan throughout the length and breadth of our America. Her feminicide, like many others, has not yet been recognized as such by the Mexican State. In that country, on June 3, 2015, the first march was held with the slogan Ni una menos (Not one less).<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Stories like that have populated the daily life of Mexico for years. In the last decade, the difference has been that women have begun to mobilize and demonstrate massively against these violent acts. Their demands have led to great advances and recognition at the legal and constitutional levels, but the numbers continue to grow. According to the National Observatory of Feminicides in Mexico, seven women were murdered daily in 2014. By 2023 that figure will reach 11 every day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Situations like this are what has led many to protest. On August 12, 2019, a huge demonstration of women took to the streets of Mexico City. In their wake were a trail of pink and violet frost, graffiti on walls, broken windows and doors, and the echo of their voices demanding justice. In previous days there had been another case of sexual violence committed by police officers,\u00a0<\/span>this time against a young mino<\/span><\/a>r.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The women’s fury was felt when they learned that even though several days had passed after the incident, the police officers responsible had still not been charged and were still in their posts. The mobilization continued, and with each demonstration, more and more graffiti appeared on the walls.<\/span><\/p>\n

The practice is not new and was not born in that week of August. But it intensified, and at the same time, the indignant responses of the authorities, the media, and the most conservative voices of opinion were felt by women. “Those are not the forms” was one of the most used expressions to criticize the graffiti on walls, doors, windows, and monuments. Many of these graffiti disappeared in the following days. With layers of paint, they removed what many called “stains.”\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Seeing how quickly this happened led Mexican photographer Diana Cano to record the before and after: the pristine wall and the scratched wall. Two projects have emerged from this initiative, one still in progress and entitled\u00a0<\/span>La Urgencia de Borrar<\/span><\/em>\u00a0and the second, with which Diana edited a photobook called\u00a0<\/span>Borr\u00e9 las paredes de las pintas<\/span><\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is, in the words of its author, “a project that tries to reflect on the immediate erasure of graffiti in the public space\u2014thinking from the emergency of feminicide and gender violence in Mexico. I find it a very violent fact that the next day or a few hours after the march, the cleaning staff arrives to remove all the denunciations and slogans. I erased the graffiti on the walls has more to do with the recovery of this visual memory that is erased.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Thus, the two works have different objectives, although they arise from the same situation, and both reflect on the action of erasing. Diana affirms that “erasing has to do with a political positioning, that is, what we want to enter and what we don’t want to enter the discussion. I take up the idea of erasing under this idea of silencing legitimate protests regarding our security, laws, injustice, and many things we have been demanding.”<\/p>\n

The reading of many social sectors against graffiti is that they delegitimize women’s protests. By not following the institutional channels, the message is “in the wrong place.” And that was the justification for criminalizing those who demonstrated. “But we know that the graffiti,” says Diana, “are instruments. From an ineffectiveness and deafness on the State’s part, these actions activate and make the demand possible.” In the case of her book, she changes the way of understanding erasure by removing the walls; This no longer becomes a “tool for silencing protest but a strategy for the visibility of demands.”<\/p>\n

For Diana, the treatment given to the protest is the macro reflection of what happens when state agents must address gender-based violence. “When a woman is raped or when a person is raped and tries to approach these instances, we are almost always received in the same way: we are judged, we are questioned about how we were dressed, what we were doing, what time we were in the street. When we massively protest in the streets, they try to change the discourse, making us believe that many of these demands are unimportant or that we are exaggerating.”<\/p>\n

Taking to the streets in protest, going out to shout for justice, and scratching walls is also a way of appropriating a space not designed for women: public space. If something happens to us in the streets, we are the first ones responsible for “being alone,” which is generally equivalent to being without a man.<\/p>\n

“These are things that we have been learning socially and culturally,” Diana points out. “When we occupy public space alone, it seems synonymous with availability. The protest also concerns a legitimate claim to occupy the public road to defend our rights.”<\/p>\n

por una serie de protestas: mujeres cansadas de la inoperancia del Estado salieron a las calles a exigir justicia en los casos de feminicidios y violencias basadas en g\u00e9nero. En esas marchas, muchas rayaron paredes y monumentos con consignas feministas. Diana Cano empez\u00f3 a registrarlas y se dio cuenta de que, poco despu\u00e9s de pintadas, las autoridades enviaban gente a borrar todas las pintas. As\u00ed nacieron <\/span>La urgencia de borrar<\/span><\/i> y <\/span>Borr\u00e9 las paredes de las pintas<\/span><\/i>: dos proyectos en los que la fot\u00f3grafa intenta conservar la memoria (y el poder) de esas palabras.<\/span>\n\nPor Marcela Vallejo<\/span>\n\n[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=\"4.15\" _module_preset=\"default\" custom_padding=\"50px||50px||false|false\" locked=\"off\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"]\n\n\u201cNi una menos, ni una muerta m\u00e1s\u201d es el verso que le dio origen a la consigna feminista #niunamenos. La autor\u00eda es de la poeta de Ciudad Ju\u00e1rez, Susana Chavez, quien en 2011 fue violada y asesinada en su ciudad. Ella no lleg\u00f3 a ver c\u00f3mo las dem\u00e1s gritar\u00edamos esta consigna a lo largo y ancho de nuestra Am\u00e9rica. Su feminicidio, como el de tantas otras, a\u00fan no ha sido reconocido como tal por el Estado mexicano. En ese pa\u00eds, el 3 de junio del 2015 se celebr\u00f3 la primera marcha cuya consigna fue esa, Ni una menos.<\/span>\n\nHistorias como esa han poblado la vida cotidiana de M\u00e9xico desde hace a\u00f1os. En la \u00faltima d\u00e9cada la diferencia ha sido que las mujeres han empezado a movilizarse y a manifestarse masivamente en contra de estos hechos violentos. Sus reclamos han permitido grandes avances y reconocimientos a nivel legal y constitucional, sin embargo las cifras no dejan de crecer. Seg\u00fan el Observatorio Nacional de Feminicidios en M\u00e9xico a 2014 cada d\u00eda eran asesinadas siete mujeres. Para 2023 esa cifra llega a 11 cada d\u00eda. <\/span>\n\nSituaciones as\u00ed son las que han llevado a muchas a protestar. El 12 de agosto de 2019, una enorme manifestaci\u00f3n de mujeres se tom\u00f3 las calles de la Ciudad de M\u00e9xico. A su paso quedaba una estela de escarcha rosa y violeta, pintas en las paredes, ventanas y puertas rotas y el eco de sus voces exigiendo justicia. En d\u00edas anteriores se hab\u00eda conocido un caso m\u00e1s de violencia sexual cometida por polic\u00edas, <\/span>esta vez contra una joven menor de edad. <\/span><\/a>\n\nLa furia de las mujeres se hizo sentir al saber que aun cuando hab\u00edan pasado varios d\u00edas despu\u00e9s del hecho, los polic\u00edas responsables a\u00fan no hab\u00edan sido imputados y, por tanto, segu\u00edan ejerciendo sus cargos. Pero se intensific\u00f3 y al mismo tiempo las respuestas indignadas de las autoridades, los medios y las voces de opini\u00f3n m\u00e1s conservadoras se hicieron sentir. \u201cEsas no son las formas\u201d, fue una de las expresiones m\u00e1s usadas para criticar las pintas en paredes, puertas, ventanas y monumentos. Muchas de esas pintas desaparecieron en los d\u00edas siguientes. Con capas de pintura eliminaron lo que muchos llamaron \u201cmanchas\u201d. <\/span>\n\nVer la rapidez con la que eso suced\u00eda, llev\u00f3 a la fot\u00f3grafa mexicana Diana Cano a registrar el antes y el despu\u00e9s: la pared pristina y la pared rayada. De esa iniciativa han surgido dos proyectos, uno que a\u00fan est\u00e1 en curso y se titula <\/span>La urgencia de borrar <\/span><\/i>y el segundo, con el cu\u00e1l Diana edit\u00f3 un fotolibro llamado <\/span>Borr\u00e9 las paredes de las pintas.<\/span><\/i>\n\nSe trata de, en palabras de su autora, \u201cun proyecto que intenta reflexionar sobre el borrado inmediato de las pintas en el espacio p\u00fablico. Pensando desde la situaci\u00f3n de emergencia de violencia feminicida y de g\u00e9nero que hay en M\u00e9xico. Diana afirma que \u201cborrar tiene que ver con un posicionamiento pol\u00edtico, es decir qu\u00e9 queremos que entre y qu\u00e9 no en la discusi\u00f3n. Yo personalmente retomo la idea o el concepto de borrar bajo esta idea de silenciamiento de protestas leg\u00edtimas respecto a nuestra seguridad, a leyes, a injusticia, un mont\u00f3n de cosas que venimos exigiendo.\u201d<\/span>\n\nLa lectura de muchos sectores sociales frente a las pintas es que deslegitiman la protesta de las mujeres. Al no seguir los canales institucionales, el mensaje queda \u201cen el lugar equivocado\u201d. Y esa fue la justificaci\u00f3n para criminalizar a quienes se manifiestan. \u201cPero sabemos que las pintas\u201d, dice Diana, \u201cson instrumentos. A partir de una inoperancia y una sordera de parte del Estado este tipo de acciones son las que activan y posibilitan la demanda.\u201d En el caso de su libro, ella cambia la forma de entender el borrado, al quitar las paredes este se convierte ya no en una  \u201cherramienta de silenciamiento de la protesta sino en una estrategia de visibilidad de las demandas.\u201d  <\/span>\n\nEl tratamiento que se le da a la protesta, para Diana es el reflejo macro de lo que pasa cuando los agentes del Estado deben atender las violencias basadas en g\u00e9nero. \u201cCuando una mujer es violentada o cuando una persona es violentada e intenta acercarse a estas instancias casi siempre se nos recibe de la misma forma: se nos juzga, se nos cuestiona c\u00f3mo \u00edbamos vestidas, que est\u00e1bamos haciendo, a qu\u00e9 hora est\u00e1bamos en la calle. Cuando protestamos de manera masiva en las calles se nos trata de cambiar el discurso, haciendo creer que muchas de estas demandas no son importantes o que estamos exagerando.\u201d<\/span>\n\nTomar las calles en una protesta, salir a gritar exigiendo justicia, rayar las paredes, es tambi\u00e9n una forma de apropiar un espacio que no ha sido pensado para mujeres: el espacio p\u00fablico. Si en las calles nos sucede algo, las primeras responsables somos nosotras por \u201cestar solas\u201d, lo que generalmente equivale a estar sin un hombre. <\/span>\n\n\u201cSon cosas que venimos aprendiendo social y culturalmente\", apunta Diana. \"Cuando ocupamos el espacio p\u00fablico solas parece que es sin\u00f3nimo de disponibilidad.
