Photographic archives are part of Celeste Rojas M\u00fagica’s raw material. For her, every time an image from the archive is revisited, it changes. It transforms. Under that premise, the Chilean artist developed Una Sombra Oscilante<\/em>, taking records from her father, and Ejercicios de Aridez, where she combines images appropriated from various archives with others of her own. Celeste understands the image in both projects as a luminous meeting point between the past and present.<\/p>\n

Visual artist Celeste Rojas Mugica is surprised that her images are primarily in black and white. She says she works a lot in color, but eventually, the projects end up in monochrome. “It’s almost inevitable,” she says. Photography has accompanied Celeste’s life since she was a child; her father was a photographer and taught her to make images and develop them from an early age. That’s why she says she has always been a photographer, and now life is leading her to filmmaking.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0For Celeste, it is fundamental to understand that her work is constructed from a precise place of enunciation. She is interested in talking about the territory and the history that runs through it, thinking about it, and asking questions about it. Her work is about Chile. It could be said that this artist’s work is closely related to memory, but it is not about reconstruction exercises. It is about reflecting on the exercise of remembering, revisiting, and forgetting and how this reverberates in the present.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The artist works with archives, perhaps the most important of which is that of her father. He was a militant of the Revolutionary Left Movement during the dictatorship and contributed to the movement with photography. That meant living in hiding and constantly moving, but he had to go into exile at some point. With her father, Celeste has not only had a privileged window to understand a part of her country’s history, but she has also had access to many images, narratives, and visual techniques.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Her dad has been an excuse to see the past and understand and ask questions. With him and his archive, Celeste developed the project\u00a0<\/span>Una Sombra Oscilante<\/span><\/em>, which is based on “a series of questions about the unrepresentable, but through the idea that in the photos there is an imaginary vanishing point, something is possible to materialize.”<\/span><\/p>\n

The work of appropriation of archives also led her to make\u00a0<\/span>Ejercicios de Aridez. This work<\/span><\/em>\u00a0has as its starting point the following: “In 2011, a woman, a member of a group of relatives of the executed in Calama, Chile, received an anonymous envelope with the image of a huge bald knife traced over the Atacama Desert. On each side of the hilt were traced and petrified the numbers 73 and 78, and a perfect circle of approximately 600 meters in diameter”.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Corvo (a curved sable) is the Chilean armed forces emblem. Why did this woman receive this image? Who dares to make such an intervention on the territory?\u00a0<\/span>Ejercicios de Aridez<\/span><\/em>\u00a0has several facets:\u00a0<\/span>an installation<\/span><\/a>, a\u00a0<\/span>website<\/span><\/a>, and it has become an object of mediation to speak through memory, the past, the present, and the future.<\/span><\/p>\n

For Celeste, memory exercises go beyond the reconstruction of the past. Thinking about what happened, revisiting archives, and reliving memories can materialize ideas of utopian worlds and other ways of being and being in the world.<\/span><\/p>\n

When discussing your work, some tend to frame it in the construction of memory. Do you agree with that way of understanding it?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0My work generally has a particular interest in memory or what I understand as memories, not as a single concept. I’m interested in thinking about this issue, not as something static or as nostalgic but rather as resorting to the mechanisms of memories to think about the present and to think about how archives, reading them in the present, are also reconfigured and transformed; they are elements that are in constant movement.<\/span><\/p>\n

In that sense, for you, is memory constructed or reconstructed?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Human beings can’t remember everything. It is inevitable. I think it is a combination because there are things we cannot control, we cannot determine what we are going to remember and what we are not going to remember, but we know that we cannot remember everything. Moreover, memory has a very random way of configuring itself in our brain and is determined by subjectivity in contact with the world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Memories are also collective and part of social processes in which we place specific memories over others based on what we think or desire. This somehow unstable capacity of memory, for me, is something interesting and not a problem in negative terms.<\/span><\/p>\n

Your work has a strong basis in photographic archives. How do you understand archives, and what do you look for in them?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

I’m interested in looking at the archive from a critical and situated perspective. I think that the place from which I enunciate myself is relevant. It’s not the same to work with archives; I somehow feel it’s not my place to work because I have a place in this world, which is loaded with a series of issues.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I work with archives that are mainly photographic documents. When I speak of a critical perspective, I mean that these archives with which I work have this capacity. On the one hand, to allude specifically to something that has happened and is a document of the real and of history, but at the same time, it can become something else, and every time we look at it again, it can be something else.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So I am interested in thinking about these materials in this double dimension: in their capacity to refer to an era, to a document, to a fact, to specific conditions of production, to particular events, but at the same time, in their capacity for transformation or the performative power they have to offer us always another possibility as long as we look at them again and put them about the now. To a certain extent, the archive is like a body in movement. The challenge, or what is interesting, is to think critically about the relations between both possibilities.<\/span><\/p>\n

I understand that a large part of your work is based on the archive of your father, a leftist militant during the dictatorship in Chile. How do you approach it, and which other archives do you work on within the project of<\/span>\u00a0Una Sombra Oscilante<\/span><\/em>?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

In the case of\u00a0<\/span>Una Sombra Oscilante<\/span><\/em>, it is a project with several parts. I am now in the post-production of a feature film -my master’s project-. In this case, I work with a series of photographs that comprise the archive of photos my father took during his years of militancy during the Chilean dictatorship and exile. The exciting thing about this archive is that it refers not only to the existing images but also those that don’t. There are many of the photos that my father took during his years of militancy during the Chilean dictatorship and exile. There are many photos my father took that no longer exist, and I am interested in thinking about how to summon them and how to demand that invisibility.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0For example, many of those photographs had to disappear at a particular moment for security reasons. Or also, as my father was a photographer for the Revolutionary Left Movement, they were photographs that were not intended to be preserved at the time. But many photos do not exist because the same transit of the exile and the return of himself fleeing from his history have made them not be there.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ejercicios de Aridez\u00a0<\/span><\/em>works on a relationship between documents of different origins. That is to say. There are Google Earth files with satellite captures of a specific territory, archive photographs of exhumations of bodies of disappeared people, and images I produced in the present. When you see it exhibited, the work does not refer to which images are mine and which are not, but there is a kind of communion and interrelation of these elements.<\/span><\/p>\n

An oscillating shadow is a project that has involved constant dialogue with your father. How have you worked on this dialogue beyond the image?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The book of\u00a0<\/span>Una Sombra Oscilante<\/span><\/em>, edited by Asunci\u00f3n, contains images from the archive. Now and then, there are small fragments of e-mail correspondence we had over the years, in which I was working with the archive, but my e-mails do not appear, only his, and it is understood that he is responding to someone. The film, which is in post-production now, is a work where my father is on stage and is the only character. I am behind the camera, I never appear, but there is a game between us. There is my voice and his constant. It’s like a game around photography, a dialogue between the history of a country and the ways of making images.<\/span><\/p>\n

My brother is a writer and writes a lot about my dad. So he is a bit used to it, but he is a very low-profile person. Ejercicios de Aridez<\/span><\/em>\u00a0is a project that generates a lot of intrigues. It all starts with the photograph that the activist receives: an aerial image of a vast Corvo drawn on the desert floor. Why do you think she received that photo?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

There is nothing obvious because there is also a lot of ambiguity in all this data or information due to this country’s conditions that have not judged those responsible. In Chile, there are more than 4000 disappeared bodies since the last dictatorship; there are pacts of silence, so there are many things that we do not know with certainty why they happened, but this was probably intimidation in the context of a trial that was taking place. This woman is a relative of a person who was executed politically, and the knife is an emblem of the Armed Forces.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Probably, they drew this image not to intimidate but to feel the right to mark the territory in this way with such premeditation, violence, and brutality. And yes, the facts surrounding this project are very intriguing. The project does not seek to give an answer but rather to place us in that state of intrigue and confusion about how to surround an enigma and the most brutal violence that can exist.<\/span><\/p>\n

The distance we have is because of our space with exercising horror, so there is something ungraspable in a mess, indescribable, indecipherable. The project seeks to place itself in that uncomfortable place and also to persevere in searching for answers knowing that we will not find them anyway.<\/span><\/p>\n

In\u00a0<\/span>La Dimensi\u00f3n Desconocida<\/span><\/em>, by Nona Fern\u00e1ndez, something that caught my attention is a reflection she makes in which she wonders if, at some point, we will be able to wake up from the dream of horror and if when we wake up, we will be able to recognize what we have done. That first person strikes me. It makes me think a lot about whether we can involve ourselves in these forms of violence in this way. She is from a different generation than yours, but I would like to know if you feel involved in this way.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

We are all involved because we are social subjects. But I know that I am not responsible for these crimes. I don’t know exactly what she is aiming at, but I believe that repairing, transforming, and enabling other possible conditions in the present corresponds to all of us. When I told you about situated thinking, I also meant that this corresponds to all of us from our places.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So, that sense is responsible, but I am also clear that there are structural conditions that make that there are those who have more power than others and have committed the crimes they have committed precisely because of those mechanics of power and for being in places where I am not, nor would be, nor am I interested in being. I don’t know if I read this before or after delivering the Truth Commission Report here in Colombia. In the delivery, Father De Roux, the director of the Commission, asked why we allowed this to happen. And I have thought a lot about this question, could we have stopped it?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

That question enables reflection. If that question does not appear, everything else around it probably does not appear either.<\/span><\/p>\n

When I talk about the mechanics of power and all these structural conditions that made it possible, for example, a dictatorship like the one in Chile, I am aware that this meant a blow to the experience of many people, which annihilated in literal and not so literal terms those people involved.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Considering all the forces mobilized to do a project as complex as a dictatorship work for 17 years, you have to think about things. It was a project of great complexity and sophistication. But the correlation of forces was abysmal, so holding the communities responsible for something that completely exceeded their possibilities is absurd.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now yes, I believe that the commitment to our history and our processes is fundamental, which is why I am someone who vindicates what my father and mother did. A ella le interesa hablar del territorio y la historia que lo atraviesa, pensar sobre ello, hacer preguntas al respecto. Su trabajo es sobre Chile. Podr\u00eda decirse que la obra de esta artista est\u00e1 muy relacionada con la memoria, pero no se trata de ejercicios de reconstrucci\u00f3n. Se trata de reflexionar en torno al ejercicio de recordar, revisitar, olvidar y de c\u00f3mo ello reverbera en el presente.<\/span>\n\nLa artista trabaja con archivos, quiz\u00e1 el m\u00e1s importante es el de su padre. \u00c9l fue un militante del Movimiento de Izquierda Revolucionaria durante la dictadura y aportaba al movimiento con la fotograf\u00eda. Eso implic\u00f3 no solo haber vivido en la clandestinidad, movi\u00e9ndose constantemente, sino que en alg\u00fan momento tuvo que exiliarse. Me interesa pensar este asunto no como algo est\u00e1tico o como nost\u00e1lgico, sino m\u00e1s bien recurrir a los mecanismos de las memorias para pensar el presente y pensar de qu\u00e9 manera los archivos, en la medida en que los leemos en el presente, tambi\u00e9n se reconfiguran, se transforman, son elementos que est\u00e1n en constante movimiento.<\/span>\n\nEn ese sentido, \u00bfpara ti la memoria se construye o se reconstruye?<\/b>\n\nA los seres humanos nos es imposible recordarlo todo, de hecho, es algo inevitable. Creo que es una combinaci\u00f3n en realidad porque hay cosas que no podemos controlar, no podemos determinar qu\u00e9 vamos a recordar y qu\u00e9 no, pero s\u00ed sabemos que no podemos recordarlo todo. La memoria, adem\u00e1s, tiene una forma muy aleatoria de configurarse en nuestro cerebro y est\u00e1 determinada por una subjetividad que est\u00e1 en contacto con el mundo. <\/span>\n\nLas memorias son tambi\u00e9n colectivas y forman parte de procesos sociales en los que tambi\u00e9n ponemos ciertas memorias sobre otras, con base en lo que pensamos o a lo que deseamos. Creo que es relevante el lugar desde donde me enuncio. No es lo mismo ir a trabajar con archivos sobre los que de alguna forma siento que no me corresponde hacerlo porque tengo un lugar en este mundo y ese lugar est\u00e1 cargado de una serie de cuestiones. <\/span>\n\nTrabajo con archivos que son principalmente documentos fotogr\u00e1ficos. Cuando hablo de una perspectiva cr\u00edtica me refiero a que estos archivos con los que trabajo tienen esta capacidad: por un lado, de aludir espec\u00edficamente a algo que ha sucedido y es un documento de lo real y de la historia, pero a la vez tiene la capacidad de convertirse en otra cosa y cada vez que volvamos a mirarlo puede ser otra cosa. <\/span>\n\nEntonces me interesa pensar en esos materiales en esa doble dimensi\u00f3n: en la capacidad que tienen de hacer referencia a una \u00e9poca, a un documento, a un hecho, a unas condiciones de producci\u00f3n, a ciertos acontecimientos; pero la vez en su capacidad de transformaci\u00f3n o la potencia performativa que tienen de ofrecernos siempre otra posibilidad en la medida en que volvamos a mirarlos y a ponerlos en relaci\u00f3n con el ahora. En cierta medida, el archivo es como un cuerpo en movimiento. El desaf\u00edo, o lo interesante, es pensar cr\u00edticamente en esas relaciones entre ambas posibilidades.<\/span>\n\n<\/span>\n\n[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row pap\u00e1, que fue militante de izquierda durante la dictadura en Chile, \u00bfc\u00f3mo lo abordas y con cu\u00e1les otros archivos trabajas en el proyecto de <\/b>Una sombra oscilante<\/i><\/b>?<\/b>\n\nEn el caso de <\/span>Una sombra oscilante<\/span><\/i>, es un proyecto que tiene varias partes, de hecho, ahora estoy en el proceso de posproducci\u00f3n de un largometraje \u2013mi proyecto de m\u00e1ster\u2013. En este caso, trabajo con una serie de fotograf\u00edas que componen el archivo de fotos que tom\u00f3 mi pap\u00e1 en sus a\u00f1os de militancia durante la dictadura chilena y el exilio. Lo interesante de ese archivo es que hace referencia no s\u00f3lo a las im\u00e1genes que existen sino a las que no. Hay muchas de las fotos que mi padre tom\u00f3 que no existen m\u00e1s y a m\u00ed me interesa pensar en c\u00f3mo convocarlas, c\u00f3mo convocar esa invisibilidad. <\/span>\n\nMuchas de esas fotograf\u00edas hubo que hacerlas desaparecer en un momento determinado por una cuesti\u00f3n de seguridad, por ejemplo. O tambi\u00e9n, como mi padre era fot\u00f3grafo para el Movimiento de Izquierda Revolucionaria, en su momento eran fotograf\u00edas que no ten\u00edan el objetivo de preservarse. Pero hay muchas fotos que no existen porque el mismo tr\u00e1nsito del exilio y el retorno, de \u00e9l mismo rehuyendo de su propia historia, han hecho que no La pel\u00edcula, que est\u00e1 en postproducci\u00f3n ahora, es un trabajo donde mi padre est\u00e1 en escena y es el \u00fanico personaje. Yo estoy detr\u00e1s de c\u00e1mara, nunca aparezco, pero hay un juego entre nosotros, est\u00e1 mi voz y la de \u00e9l constantemente. Entonces est\u00e1 un poco acostumbrado, pero \u00e9l es una persona de muy bajo perfil, siempre le ha generado mucho pudor el hecho de que sus hijos tengamos tanto inter\u00e9s. En realidad tambi\u00e9n es una excusa, la figura de mi padre nos permite pensar en un momento hist\u00f3rico, en una serie de condiciones y situaciones que atravesaron y atraviesan un pa\u00eds.<\/span>\n\nPero justamente por las condiciones de Chile, durante mucho tiempo mi pap\u00e1 estuvo muy asustado por el hecho de que nosotros trabaj\u00e1ramos sobre su propia historia. En Chile los movimientos de lucha armada, en su momento, o de izquierda revolucionaria hasta el d\u00eda de hoy, no son experiencias que sean reivindicadas desde el presente. Entonces personas como mi padre han tenido que vivir hist\u00f3ricamente con la idea de ocultar, de alguna manera mantener la clandestinidad.<\/span>\n\nEjercicios de aridez<\/i><\/b> es un proyecto que genera mucha intriga. Todo inicia con la fotograf\u00eda que recibe la activista: una imagen a\u00e9rea de un enorme cuchillo corvo dibujado en el suelo del desierto. \u00bfPor qu\u00e9 crees que ella recibi\u00f3 esa foto?<\/b>\n\nNo hay nada que se tenga muy claro, porque tambi\u00e9n hay mucha ambig\u00fcedad en todos estos datos o informaci\u00f3n por las condiciones de este pa\u00eds que no ha juzgado a los responsables. En Chile hay m\u00e1s de 4000 cuerpos desaparecidos desde la \u00faltima dictadura, hay pactos de silencio en fin, entonces hay muchas cosas que realmente con certeza no sabemos por qu\u00e9 ocurren, pero probablemente esto fue un amedrentamiento en el contexto de un juicio que se estaba llevando a cabo. Esta mujer es familiar de un ejecutado pol\u00edtico y el cuchillo corvo es un emblema de las Fuerzas Armadas. <\/span>\n\nProbablemente, dibujaron esta imagen con el fin de no s\u00e9 si amedrentar, pero s\u00ed de sentirse con el derecho de marcar as\u00ed el territorio con tal alevos\u00eda, violencia, brutalidad. Y s\u00ed, los hechos que rodean a ese proyecto son muy intrigantes. Y en alg\u00fan punto est\u00e1 bien que as\u00ed sea, porque si entendi\u00e9ramos del todo aquellas mentes que son capaces de pensar algo as\u00ed, quiz\u00e1 nos convertir\u00edamos en esas mentes.<\/span>\n\nLa distancia que tenemos es por causa de la distancia que tenemos con ejercer el horror, entonces hay algo inasible en el horror, hay algo indescriptible, indescifrable. El proyecto busca ubicarse en ese sitio inc\u00f3modo, tambi\u00e9n de perseverar en buscar respuestas sabiendo que igual no vamos a encontrarlas.<\/span>\n\nEn<\/b> La dimensi\u00f3n desconocida, <\/i><\/b>de Nona Fern\u00e1ndez, algo que me llam\u00f3 mucho la atenci\u00f3n es una reflexi\u00f3n que ella hace en la que se pregunta si en alg\u00fan momento vamos a poder despertar del sue\u00f1o del horror, y si al despertar vamos a poder reconocer lo que hicimos. A m\u00ed me llama la atenci\u00f3n esa primera persona. Me pone a pensar mucho si realmente podemos implicarnos as\u00ed en estas formas de violencia. Ella es de una generaci\u00f3n diferente a la tuya, pero me gustar\u00eda saber si tu te sientes implicada as\u00ed.<\/b>\n\nImplicados estamos todos porque somos sujetos sociales. Pero yo s\u00e9 que no soy responsable de esos cr\u00edmenes. No s\u00e9 exactamente a qu\u00e9 es lo que ella apunta pero s\u00ed creo que el acto de reparar, transformar, habilitar otras condiciones posibles en el presente nos corresponde a todes. Cuando te dec\u00eda esto del pensamiento situado, tambi\u00e9n me refiero que esto nos corresponde a todes desde nuestros lugares. <\/span>\n\nEntonces, hay una responsabilidad en ese sentido, pero tambi\u00e9n tengo claro que hay condiciones estructurales que hacen que haya quienes ostenten m\u00e1s poder que otros y hayan cometido los cr\u00edmenes que cometieron justamente por esas mec\u00e1nicas del poder y por estar en lugares donde yo no estoy, ni estar\u00eda, ni me interesa estar. Entonces mi pr\u00e1ctica est\u00e1 en otro lugar y busca levantar otros discursos.<\/span>\n\nNo s\u00e9 si le\u00ed esto antes o despu\u00e9s de la entrega del Informe de la Comisi\u00f3n de la Verdad aqu\u00ed en Colombia. En la entrega, el padre De Roux, el director de la Comisi\u00f3n, preguntaba \u00bfpor qu\u00e9 permitimos que esto pasara? Y yo he pensado mucho sobre esta pregunta \u00bfhabr\u00edamos podido detenerlo?<\/b>\n\nEsa pregunta lo que habilita es la reflexi\u00f3n. Si esa pregunta no aparece, probablemente todo lo dem\u00e1s alrededor de ella tampoco.<\/span>\n\nCuando digo como la mec\u00e1nica del poder y todas estas condiciones estructurales que hicieron posible, por ejemplo, una dictadura como la que hubo en Chile, soy consciente de que eso signific\u00f3 un golpe a la experiencia de muchas personas, que aniquil\u00f3 en t\u00e9rminos literales y tambi\u00e9n no tan literales a esas personas involucradas. <\/span>\n\nCreo que hay que pensar las cosas considerando todas las fuerzas que se movilizaron para que un proyecto tan complejo como una dictadura funcione durante 17 a\u00f1os. Fue un proyecto de una complejidad y sofisticaci\u00f3n muy grande.
