In the documentary\u00a0<\/span>Pensar Sintiendo,<\/span><\/em> Marcela Angulo explores the diversity of Afro identity in a poetic key. The Colombian author suggests a ‘sensory gathering’ through which she aims to convey “the power, discomfort, joy, and above all, the creativity that has been the fundamental resource through which Black communities in the Americas have overcome the many and varied attempts to harm us.”\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Four individuals from different backgrounds, experiences, and genders respond to the question: What does it mean to be a Black person in Colombia? This is the premise of\u00a0<\/span>Pensar Sintiendo (<\/span><\/em>Thinking by Feeling), a documentary produced by Se\u00f1al Colombia and premiered last year. Filmmaker Marcela Angulo aimed to make an original contribution to her country’s media culture, which she believes is marked by a disturbing absence of Afro characters and experiences. ‘I studied Audiovisual and Multimedia Communication here in Colombia. I spent three years in Argentina studying writing because I got tired of novels and said: I want to write my own,’ she recalls. After working for years in Colombian public television, she began undertaking independent audiovisual projects, such as ‘<\/span>Bogoblack<\/span><\/em><\/a>,’ a love story between two Black individuals set in the capital. She recently coordinated an Afro narrative panel for the Paramount streaming channel. ‘It’s nice that platforms are trying to include people excluded from the narrative,’ she said.\u00a0<\/span>Pensar Sintiendo<\/span><\/em>\u00a0is her most ambitious project to date: an experimental and visually dazzling film in which she brings together the lessons and reflections she developed on the long journey toward recognizing her identity.<\/span><\/p>\n

Filmed in the city of Tumaco, in the department of Nari\u00f1o, southwestern Colombia, the film bears a title that alludes to the concept of ‘<\/span>Sentipensar<\/span><\/em>‘ \u2014 the act of working together thought and feeling \u2014 introduced by Spanish professor Saturnino de la Torre in his creativity classes in the 1990s. A concept that, for Angulo, is closely related to the everyday experience of Afro communities. ‘I have always considered the distinction between the body and the soul, or between thinking and feeling, problematic \u2014 categories that are now being reevaluated,’ she explains. ‘What I do is a conscious exercise of telling myself: How does this thought feel in my heart? And how does this feeling in my heart translate into thought in my mind? From there, I try to express myself in my work.’<\/span><\/p>\n

This approach is reflected in the film, which the author describes as an ‘audiovisual gathering.’ ‘For Afro communities, a gathering (tertulia) is circular: it has that quality of starting at a point and returning to it. It’s not about producing conclusive speeches but creating a space where sharing can happen freely. In ‘Feeling by Thinking,’ the interest lies in reconstructing that circle where one feels, thinks, shares, critiques, laughs, and cries.’<\/span><\/p>\n

For this project, you collected testimonies from Black Colombian individuals of different social classes, genders, and sexual orientations, including yourself. What common traits did you find in these stories? What elements caught your attention?<\/span><\/p>\n

In Colombia, the Black communities mostly come from the Pacific and Atlantic Coast, and it’s often said that they are very different. I don’t come from either of these regions because I was born in Bogot\u00e1, but my Black heritage is from the Pacific. The intention was to find something that underlies Black people and makes us Black beyond where we come from. So, rather than finding common points, what interested me was bringing together different cultural expressions, especially dance, music, and oral traditions, and showing how despite these differences, we can still connect.<\/span><\/p>\n

For example, I brought together a group of Bullerengue dancers, traditional music from the Atlantic Coast, and a Currulao musical group, a typical genre from the Pacific. And it worked: they were able to create incredible music that sounded great together, and the dancers were able to enjoy it and create beautiful choreographies. As for the oral expressions, some are quite harsh, like the story of Elegu\u00e1, a transgender indigenous woman whose testimony is included in the film. But on the other side, there’s teacher\u00a0<\/span>Mary Grueso<\/span><\/a>, who emphasizes the pride of being Black. And in between, there’s the ‘Decimero,’ who gathers both positions. He says, ‘Yes, we are Black and proud, and I’m a flavorful Black person, but we’re also struggling politically, lacking recognition.’ So, let’s say I was interested in working with a broad range of people, discussing diversity rather than finding common ground of what it means to be Black.”<\/span><\/p>\n

How did this project begin?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The project started last year with Se\u00f1al Colombia’s coproduction market, the country’s most crucial public channel. I attended an event called Diverse Connections, where I began talking with several producers from the channel.<\/span><\/p>\n

My idea was to create something that would incorporate my own story as one of its elements. My father is from the Pacific, but my mother is from Bogot\u00e1. My father is Black, but my mother is of mixed white heritage. And I never really grew up with him. So this awareness of being Black came to me when I was growing up. I’m 34 now, and it was really in my early twenties when I went to Buenos Aires and experienced racism differently; then I understood I was Black.<\/span><\/p>\n

I know it might sound funny, but that’s how it happened. And it was only then that I truly started wanting to understand what this is, what it entails, as we say in Bogot\u00e1, what it means to be a Black person in Colombia. That’s when I began to read about discrimination, racism. That’s where the motivation to make the documentary came from. And for me, the approach was always experimental. The producers were a bit nervous.<\/span><\/p>\n

The proposal is well-crafted in terms of composition, post-production work, etc. What were you interested in achieving visually?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

What I was clear about from the beginning was that, in addition to the testimonies, the documentary would include music and dance and bring together Afro people from different parts of the country. Then, while looking for visual references, the idea came to me of using inverted images of trees or the sea: turning landscapes upside down so that the sea blends with the sky. I liked that because it connects conceptually with the experience of Black individuals who, on the one hand, often feel pride in their roots but who also constantly feel frustrated because one has to deal with adverse conditions or the experience of racism and discrimination, which is very strong, unfortunate, and painful. I think that, as Black people, we have specific resources both physically and intellectually. Still, we are also hindered by specific social situations that are not easy to combat, and that force us to be in a position of resistance. And sometimes, yes, one wants to resist, but there are also days when I don’t want to fight. I don’t have the energy for that.<\/span><\/p>\n

Once that connection was established, I had what I needed to experiment visually. Another critical factor that had a significant impact in this regard is the documentary’s director of photography, Juan Sebasti\u00e1n Bustos, a photographer from Cali who, although not Afro, has a strong connection with Afro culture because Cali is a very Afro-centric city. Furthermore, he has always been interested in culture and community and has filmed much in the Pacific region. Working with him was a good decision because he quickly grasped the concept and enriched it with a very subtle sense of composition, with the play of bodies, balanced and aesthetic postures, and light.<\/span><\/p>\n

On the other hand, I was interested in contrasting the testimonies, some of which were quite powerful, with images where these Black individuals would feel at ease in the world. From there, I managed the staging of bodily expressions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Do you think the images of Black people that typically appear in Colombian media negatively affect this community, or at the very least, do not contribute to improving their situation?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Yes, of course. Unfortunately, the stereotype of Black people is closely associated with poverty, the periphery, forced labor, and solitude. It wasn’t easy to align this documentary with the expectations of the channel producers. For instance, the initial cut had no voiceover from me. It only included reflections and dances. The producers didn’t understand it at all. I did make some changes that I felt were necessary to clarify the narrative. Still, I also told them that, regardless of that aspect, they needed to recognize the value of these images, which are very authentic. There is nothing on Colombian television that shows Black people in a state of tranquility, joy, and communion as they appear here. And that was enlightening for them.<\/span><\/p>\n

Many of the comments I’ve received about this work are precisely about that: they say how good it is to see Afro people in other dispositions, expressing different emotions because it’s very tiresome always to be portrayed in the same way. And not only that, but it’s disturbing that transgender individuals are not even considered in the Colombian media sphere. It’s inexplicable to me that they are not present in our time. So much effort and insistence are needed to get television channels to include different imaginaries, genders, and ethnicities.<\/span><\/p>\n

For example, in the production, I’m currently working on for a national private channel, there’s only one Black actor out of a cast of twenty people. With indigenous people, it’s worse \u2013 you never see them in soap operas. It’s disheartening for our communities not to see ourselves represented in that public media discourse. Still, it’s also unfortunate that society is missing out on the opportunity to acquire knowledge and recognize what is part of the culture to which they belong.<\/span><\/p>\n

To wrap up, I want to ask you: What do you see as the main challenges of these movements for identity reclamation in Colombia or in other countries in Latin America?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

For me, the individual challenge for each person is to fulfill their dreams, despite all the obstacles in achieving them. Because it’s tricky: indigenous and Black communities always have fewer opportunities. In their regions, there’s less education, and less access to clean water, leading to high rates of distraction and dropping out of school from a young age. In our society, this prevents Black and indigenous people from becoming who they want to be in the fields we aspire to.<\/span><\/p>\n

That’s why stereotypes are so serious. Yes, many Black people might be amazing dancers, but there are also those who can be mathematicians, scientists, astronauts, and engineers. As a Black person, you’re born and raised believing you’re here to entertain at parties, to bring joy to gatherings, and that’s not true. In those kinds of contexts, it’s difficult to truly discover what you want to be; there are many insecurities. So, you ask yourself: will I be good at this? If it’s not what I was taught or what I see people from my community doing.<\/span><\/p>\n

That’s why the most essential thing in these struggles is fulfilling a life’s desire and making it a reality.<\/span><\/p>\n

Esta es la premisa de <\/span>Pensar sintiendo<\/span><\/i>, un documental producido por el canal de televisi\u00f3n Se\u00f1al Colombia y estrenado el a\u00f1o pasado, con el que la cineasta Marcela Angulo se propuso hacer un aporte original a la cultura medi\u00e1tica de su pa\u00eds, marcada, en su opini\u00f3n, por una ausencia perturbadora de personajes y vivencias afro. \u201cEstudi\u00e9 Comunicaci\u00f3n Audiovisual y Multimedios ac\u00e1 en Colombia y estuve tres a\u00f1os en Argentina estudiando escritura, porque me cans\u00e9 de las novelas y dije: quiero escribir lo m\u00edo\u201d, recuerda. Luego de trabajar durante a\u00f1os en la televisi\u00f3n p\u00fablica colombiana, empez\u00f3 a realizar proyectos audiovisuales independientes, como <\/span>Bogoblack<\/span><\/i><\/a>, una historia de amor entre dos personas negras ambientada en la capital. Hace poco coordin\u00f3 una mesa de narrativas afro para el canal de streaming Paramount. \"Es lindo de verdad que las plataformas est\u00e9n haciendo esfuerzos para incluir a personas que en la narrativa han estado excluidas\u201d, dijo. <\/span>Pensar sintiendo<\/span><\/i> es su proyecto m\u00e1s ambicioso a la fecha: una pel\u00edcula de corte experimental y visualmente deslumbrante, en la que re\u00fane los aprendizajes y las reflexiones que desarroll\u00f3 en el largo camino hacia el reconocimiento de su propia identidad.<\/span>\n\nGrabada en la ciudad de Tumaco, en el departamento de Nari\u00f1o, al suroeste de Colombia, la pel\u00edcula lleva un t\u00edtulo que alude al concepto de \u201csentipensar\u201d \u2014poner a trabajar conjuntamente el pensamiento y el sentimiento\u2014, introducido por el profesor espa\u00f1ol Saturnino de la Torre en sus clases de creatividad en la d\u00e9cada de 1990. Un concepto que, para Angulo, es cercano a la experiencia cotidiana de las comunidades afro. \u201cSiempre he considerado problem\u00e1tica la distinci\u00f3n entre el cuerpo y el alma, o el pensar y el sentir, que son categor\u00edas que hoy est\u00e1n siendo reevaluadas\u201d, explica. \u201cLo que hago es un ejercicio consciente de decirme a m\u00ed misma: esto que pienso, \u00bfc\u00f3mo se siente en el coraz\u00f3n? Y esto que siento en el coraz\u00f3n, \u00bfc\u00f3mo se piensa en mi cabeza? Desde all\u00ed intento expresarme en mi obra personal\u201d. <\/span>\n\nEste m\u00e9todo se ve reflejado en el filme, que la autora define como una \u201ctertulia audiovisual\u201d. \u201cLa tertulia para las comunidades afro es algo circular: tiene esa cualidad de arrancar en un punto y volver a \u00e9l. No se trata, entonces, de producir discursos concluyentes, sino de generar un espacio donde se puede compartir libremente. Yo no provengo de ninguna porque nac\u00ed en Bogot\u00e1, pero mi ascendencia negra es del Pac\u00edfico. Y la intenci\u00f3n era un poco encontrar eso que subyace en las personas negras y que nos hace negros m\u00e1s all\u00e1 del lugar del que provenimos. Entonces, m\u00e1s que haber encontrado puntos en com\u00fan, lo que me interes\u00f3 fue reunir distintas expresiones culturales, sobre todo son danc\u00edsticas, musicales y de la tradici\u00f3n oral, y mostrar c\u00f3mo a pesar de esas diferencias es posible encontrarnos. <\/span>\n\nPor ejemplo, reun\u00ed a un grupo de bailarines de bullerengue, que es una m\u00fasica tradicional del Atl\u00e1ntico, y a un grupo musical de currulao, que es g\u00e9nero t\u00edpico del Pac\u00edfico. Y la verdad es que funcion\u00f3: ellos pudieron crear una m\u00fasica incre\u00edble que suena muy bien junta, a la que los bailarines le pudieron tambi\u00e9n sacar el disfrute y hacerle unas coreograf\u00edas maravillosas. En cuanto a las expresiones orales, hay unas que son de hecho bastante duras, como la de Elegu\u00e1, una chica ind\u00edgena trans cuyo testimonio es incluido en la pel\u00edcula. Pero al otro lado est\u00e1 la maestra <\/span>Mary Grueso<\/span><\/a>, quien pone mucho \u00e9nfasis en el orgullo de ser negra. Y en el medio, el decimero que recoge de alg\u00fan modo ambas posiciones. Dice: \u201cS\u00ed, somos negros y estamos orgullosos, y yo soy un negro sabroso, pero tambi\u00e9n estamos mal desde lo pol\u00edtico, nos falta reconocimiento\u201d. <\/h3>\n\u00bfC\u00f3mo empez\u00f3 este proyecto?<\/b>\n\nEl proyecto empez\u00f3 el a\u00f1o pasado con el mercado de coproducci\u00f3n de Se\u00f1al Colombia, que es el canal p\u00fablico m\u00e1s importante del pa\u00eds. Asist\u00ed a un evento que se llam\u00f3 Conexiones Diversas y all\u00ed empec\u00e9 a conversar con varios productores del canal. <\/span>\n

<\/h3>\nMi idea era hacer algo que recogiera, como uno de sus elementos, mi propia historia. Mi pap\u00e1 es del Pac\u00edfico pero mi mam\u00e1 es de Bogot\u00e1. Mi pap\u00e1 es negro, pero mi mam\u00e1 es blanca mestiza. Y yo nunca crec\u00ed con \u00e9l. Entonces <\/span>esta conciencia de ser negra a m\u00ed me lleg\u00f3 ya grandecita. Yo tengo 34 y fue realmente a los veintipocos, cuando me fui a Buenos Aires y experiment\u00e9 el racismo de una manera diferente, que entend\u00ed que era negra. <\/span>\n

<\/h3>\nYo s\u00e9 que puede sonar chistoso, pero es as\u00ed. Y fue reci\u00e9n ah\u00ed que me puse de verdad a querer entender qu\u00e9 es esto, qu\u00e9 pitos toca, como decimos en Bogot\u00e1. Qu\u00e9 significa ser una persona negra en Colombia. Y ah\u00ed fue que empec\u00e9 a leer de discriminaci\u00f3n, de racismo. De ah\u00ed viene en realidad la motivaci\u00f3n para hacer el documental. Y para m\u00ed la propuesta siempre fue experimental. Luego, buscando referentes visuales, se me ocurri\u00f3 la idea de usar im\u00e1genes invertidas de \u00e1rboles o del mar: darle vuelta a los paisajes para que el mar se confunda con el cielo. Eso me gust\u00f3 porque conecta conceptualmente con la experiencia de las personas negras que, por un lado, a menudo sienten orgullo de sus ra\u00edces, pero que tambi\u00e9n se frustran constantemente porque uno tiene que lidiar con condiciones adversas o con la experiencia del racismo y la discriminaci\u00f3n, que es muy fuerte, muy triste y dolorosa. Siento que como personas negras gozamos de ciertos recursos desde lo f\u00edsico y lo intelectual, pero tambi\u00e9n estamos frenados por determinadas situaciones sociales que no son f\u00e1ciles de combatir y que nos fuerzan a estar en una posici\u00f3n de resistencia. Y a veces s\u00ed, uno quiere resistir, pero tambi\u00e9n hay d\u00edas en que yo no me quiero pelear, no tengo energ\u00eda para eso.<\/span>\n

<\/h3>\nUna vez establecida esa conexi\u00f3n, ten\u00eda lo que necesitaba para experimentar visualmente. Otro factor importante que tuvo mucha incidencia en ese plano es el director de fotograf\u00eda del documental, Juan Sebasti\u00e1n Bustos, un fot\u00f3grafo cale\u00f1o que, si bien no es afro, tiene mucha conexi\u00f3n con lo afro porque Cali es una ciudad muy afro. Adem\u00e1s, \u00e9l siempre ha tenido inter\u00e9s en la cultura y en la comunidad y ha grabado mucho en el Pac\u00edfico. Trabajar con \u00e9l fue una buena decisi\u00f3n porque entendi\u00f3 r\u00e1pidamente la propuesta y supo nutrirla con un sentido muy fino de la composici\u00f3n, con el juego de los cuerpos, con posturas equilibradas y est\u00e9ticas, con el uso de la luz. <\/span>\n

<\/h3>\nPor otro lado, me interesaba contrastar los testimonios, algunos de los cuales eran muy fuertes, con im\u00e1genes donde estas personas negras se sintieran a gusto en el mundo. Lamentablemente, el estereotipo de las personas negras est\u00e1 muy cercano a la pobreza, a la periferia, al trabajo forzado, a la soledad. Y la verdad es que no fue f\u00e1cil compaginar este documental con las expectativas de los productores del canal. El primer corte, por ejemplo, no ten\u00eda ninguna voz en off m\u00eda, solo inclu\u00eda reflexiones y danzas. Los productores no entendieron nada. Por supuesto, yo termin\u00e9 haciendo algunos cambios que me parec\u00edan necesarios para aclarar la narrativa, pero lo que les dije tambi\u00e9n es que, al margen de ese aspecto, deb\u00edan darse cuenta del valor que tienen estas im\u00e1genes, que son muy aut\u00e9nticas. <\/span>No hay nada en la televisi\u00f3n colombiana que muestre a las personas negras en un estado de placidez, de alegr\u00eda y de comuni\u00f3n como aparecen aqu\u00ed. <\/span>Y eso para ellos fue esclarecedor.<\/span>\n

<\/h3>\nMuchos de los comentarios que he recibido sobre este trabajo tienen que ver justamente con eso: me dicen qu\u00e9 bueno es ver a personas afro en otras disposiciones, expresando otras emociones. Porque es muy cansador que siempre nos est\u00e9n representando de la misma forma. Y no solo eso, sino que es perturbador que las personas trans no sean ni siquiera consideradas en la esfera medi\u00e1tica colombiana. Para m\u00ed es inexplicable que en nuestro tiempo no est\u00e9n, y que haya que poner tanta fuerza y tanta insistencia para que los canales de televisi\u00f3n incluyan diferentes imaginarios, diferentes g\u00e9neros, diferentes etnias.<\/span>\n

<\/h3>\nPor ejemplo, en la producci\u00f3n en la que estoy trabajando ahora, que es de un canal privado nacional, del elenco de veinte personas hay solo un actor negro. Con los ind\u00edgenas es peor, uno nunca los ve en las telenovelas. Porque de verdad que es dif\u00edcil: las comunidades ind\u00edgenas y negras siempre tienen menos posibilidades. En sus regiones hay menos educaci\u00f3n, menos abastecimiento de agua, y eso desde la ni\u00f1ez genera comportamientos de distracci\u00f3n, de desescolarizaci\u00f3n muy altos, que en el tipo de sociedad que tenemos impide que las personas negras e ind\u00edgenas logremos ser lo que queremos ser en los campos que queramos. <\/span>\n

<\/h3>\nPor eso los estereotipos son tan graves. S\u00ed, a lo mejor hay muchas personas negras que bailan divino, pero tambi\u00e9n las hay con capacidades para ser matem\u00e1ticos, cient\u00edficos, astronautas, ingenieros. Uno, como negro, nace y crece creyendo que est\u00e1 en el mundo para animar las fiestas, traer alegr\u00eda a las reuniones, y no es verdad. En esa clase de contextos es dif\u00edcil encontrar realmente lo que uno quiere ser, hay muchas inseguridades. Entonces te preguntas: \u00bfser\u00e9 bueno para esto? Si no es lo que me ense\u00f1aron, si no es lo que me muestran que puede ser la gente de mi comunidad\u2026 <\/span>\n
