In “<\/span>La Historia Que Imagin\u00e9 Para Ti<\/span><\/em>,” Brazilian photographer Ma\u00edra Erlich documents the experiences of a group of elderly women who, liberated from the traditional norms they adhered to in their youth, now attend dance halls, go on cruises, and strive to live life to the fullest.<\/span><\/p>\n

For someone born in the 1950s, experiencing freedom for the first time in the 2020s\u2014the era of YouTube, Instagram, and Bumble\u2014must be an overwhelming experience. That is precisely what Brazilian photographer Ma\u00edra Erlich captures in “<\/span>La Historia Que Imagin\u00e9 Para Ti<\/span><\/em>,” an ongoing photographic essay that she defines as “a tribute to my grandmother and to all women over seventy who allowed me to share their journeys, their celebrations, and to record their experiences.”<\/span><\/p>\n

The women Erlich portrays are not traditional grandmothers. They use social media, dress stylishly, and share a vibrant zest for life\u2014notably, a love for dancing, which they practice in clubs and night venues specifically designed for senior citizens. Yet, they also share a challenging past: as Erlich explains, “They were born in an extremely patriarchal era, in which they had to give up their dreams of pursuing a formal education, building a professional career, or marrying the one they truly loved.” Many of them are now widowed or divorced and have minimal obligations. In other words, they are finally enjoying the possibility of being who they want to be.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Being over 70 years old today is very different from what it was 20 years ago, and it will be different again in 20 years,” says Erlich. “We are at a pivotal moment. People are living longer and better, and the constraints of old age no longer bind them, as these have changed.”<\/span><\/p>\n

How did this project come about?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

In 2017, I traveled to Mexico City to attend a photography workshop and took the opportunity to visit the Salon Los \u00c1ngeles, a well-known dance hall for senior citizens. I loved it there. That’s where I took the first photo that later became this project. Back in Brazil, I started looking for similar places. On the internet, I came across a tourism conference for elderly people. I spoke with the director, expressed my interest, and went to see what it was about.<\/span><\/p>\n

I spent four days at a beach resort and met some women who were very interested in what I was trying to do, even though I didn’t know what that was. I just knew I was interested in learning about their way of life, which was very different from my idea of my grandmother. Of course, they loved that I wanted to document their activities because when you’re an elderly person, people don’t usually show as much interest in your life story.<\/span><\/p>\n

So they would say, “You have to come to our town because we have a very active group there. You can stay in our homes.” And that’s what I did: I traveled, first to the northeast of Brazil, to the beach, and then to the south. That’s how I started documenting their lives. These ladies live a fun life, different from what I had imagined. Because as I was saying, the idea I had of older adults is based on memories of my grandmothers. They didn’t go out partying. They didn’t travel. They didn’t go to dances or anything like that. They stayed at home doing household chores.<\/span><\/p>\n

So I realized that this project was two things: on the one hand, a way for me to connect with people who remind me of my grandmothers, and on the other hand, something that allows me to imagine a continuation or a different ending for the lives they couldn’t have.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

This project is very personal, and it excites me a lot. I captured most of the images during those trips between 2017 and 2019. Then the pandemic arrived, and I had a lot of time to think about what I wanted to do. I began to understand that my interest in the project was mainly related to my paternal grandmother. She passed away ten years before the pandemic began, and her story differs significantly from those I have been photographing. My grandmother was the daughter of Polish Jewish immigrants who came to Brazil fleeing World War II. She grew up in a traditional Jewish family, married a Jewish doctor, and from then on, she couldn’t work anymore. She only returned to work after her husband, my grandfather, passed away. She gave up many things she wanted to do to conform to the norms of her surroundings. She couldn’t travel, play music, or have a career.
So I realized that this project was two things: on the one hand, a way for me to connect with people who remind me of my grandmothers, and on the other hand, something that allows me to imagine a continuation or a different ending for the lives they couldn’t have.
But I think the project still lacks many things. For now, I mostly have photos of parties, and I’m interested in achieving a more diverse final result, showing these people’s lives beyond the dance floor.<\/p>\n

These women who grew up in a highly patriarchal society have, at the age of 70, the opportunity to live fully for the first time. What do they tell you about this experience of flourishing at an advanced age?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Being seventy years old today is very different from what it was ten, twenty, thirty years ago. When my grandmother was sixty, she already looked like a grandmother, dressed like one. It was very different from my mother, who is now in her sixties and is super young, younger than me. That is changing because people are living longer, living better.<\/span><\/p>\n

In reality, most of the stories I heard were about women who were married for fifty years to a man who didn’t like to go out dancing and didn’t let them go out alone. Almost all of them are widows or divorced. Now they can do what they want. They have no significant obligations. Their children are grown. It’s curious to experience late freedom when you no longer owe anything to anyone. These women are full of activities. They form groups and clubs that organize parties and trips. They go on cruises in Europe, and they do it all.<\/span><\/p>\n

Things are changing so much. What interests me, precisely, is documenting the experience of these women who were born in the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s and who are the generation that went through that change. Today, thanks to feminism, there is much more awareness that we don’t have to accept everything society imposes on us. And that generation is the one that lived through that transition in thinking most intensely.<\/span><\/p>\n

I’m curious to know how you imagine yourself at seventy years old. Or how you would like to be.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The project perhaps started because of that because the idea I had of myself at seventy was that I would be at home watching TV, reading the newspaper, and not doing anything fun; because that’s what I saw with my grandmothers. This project has allowed me to change my mindset. My mother and her friends have changed my attitude. She’s much more active than me: she does ballet, goes to the gym, takes French classes, and always travels.<\/span><\/p>\n

It’s not like I’m locked up all the time, either. I feel super young. I’m 36. When I’m double that age, I have no idea what society will be like, but I think it will be very different because my generation doesn’t accept the things my grandmothers went through so easily anymore. In any case, I hope to continue being very active and doing the things I enjoy doing, like photography, traveling, and telling stories.<\/span><\/p>\n

The other thing is that I don’t have children and don’t think I will. Before, there wasn’t this option of not having children. There was a path, a script that you had to follow in life: to get married, have children, and take care of the house and your husband. Now, that’s no longer the case. Let’s see what happens. But it will surely be very different.<\/span><\/p>\n

fotograf\u00eda, y aprovech\u00e9 la ocasi\u00f3n para visitar el Sal\u00f3n Los \u00c1ngeles, que es un sal\u00f3n de baile s\u00faper famoso para la tercera edad. Y me encant\u00f3. Ah\u00ed tom\u00e9 la primera foto de lo que luego se convirti\u00f3 en este proyecto. De regreso a Brasil me puse a buscar lugares similares. Y en Internet me top\u00e9 con un congreso de turismo para personas ancianas. Habl\u00e9 con la directora, le hice saber de mi inter\u00e9s y fui a ver de qu\u00e9 se trataba. <\/span>\n\nPas\u00e9 cuatro d\u00edas en un resort en la playa y ah\u00ed conoc\u00ed a algunas mujeres que estaban muy interesadas en lo que yo estaba tratando de hacer, aunque todav\u00eda no supiera qu\u00e9 cosa era exactamente. Solo sab\u00eda que me interesaba conocer su modo de vida, que era muy distante de la idea que yo ten\u00eda de mi abuela. Obviamente, les encantaba que yo quisiera documentar sus actividades porque cuando eres una persona anciana la gente no se suele interesar tanto por tu historia de vida. <\/span>\n\nEntonces me dec\u00edan: \u201ctienes que venir a nuestra ciudad porque ah\u00ed tenemos un grupo muy activo, puedes quedarte en nuestras casas\u201d. Y eso hice: viaj\u00e9, primero al noreste de Brasil, a la playa, y luego al sur. As\u00ed empec\u00e9 a documentar sus vidas. Son se\u00f1oras que viven una vida divertida, diferente de lo que yo imaginaba. Porque, como dec\u00eda, la idea que yo ten\u00eda de las personas ancianas se basaba en los recuerdos que tengo de mis abuelas. Ellas no sal\u00edan de fiesta, no viajaban, no iban a bailes ni nada parecido. La mayor\u00eda de im\u00e1genes las hice durante esos viajes entre 2017 y 2019. Luego lleg\u00f3 la pandemia y tuve mucho tiempo para pensar en lo que quer\u00eda hacer. Empec\u00e9 a entender que mi inter\u00e9s en el proyecto ten\u00eda que ver, sobre todo, con mi abuela paterna. Ella falleci\u00f3 diez a\u00f1os antes del inicio de la pandemia, y su historia es muy diferente de las que he estado fotografiando. Mi abuela era hija de inmigrantes jud\u00edos polacos que vinieron a Brasil huyendo de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Creci\u00f3 en una familia jud\u00eda tradicional, se cas\u00f3 con un m\u00e9dico jud\u00edo y a partir de ese momento no pudo trabajar m\u00e1s. Solo volvi\u00f3 a trabajar cuando su marido, mi abuelo, muri\u00f3. Dej\u00f3 de hacer muchas cosas que quer\u00eda hacer por seguir las normas de su entorno. No pudo viajar, no pudo tocar m\u00fasica, no tuvo una carrera. <\/span>\n\nEntonces entend\u00ed que este proyecto era dos cosas: por un lado, una manera de acercarme a personas que me recuerdan a mis abuelas; y por otro lado, algo que me permite imaginar una continuaci\u00f3n o un final diferente para la vida que ellas no pudieron tener.<\/span>\n\nPero creo que al proyecto le faltan todav\u00eda muchas cosas. Por ahora tengo sobre todo fotos de fiesta y me interesa obtener un resultado final m\u00e1s diverso, mostrar la vida de estas personas fuera de la pista de lo que era hace diez, veinte, treinta a\u00f1os. Mi abuela, cuando ten\u00eda sesenta, ya ten\u00eda una cara de abuela, se vest\u00eda como una abuela. Era muy diferente de mi madre, que ya tiene seSenta y pocos, y es s\u00faper joven, m\u00e1s joven que yo. Esto est\u00e1 cambiando porque la gente est\u00e1 viviendo m\u00e1s, est\u00e1 viviendo mejor.<\/span>\n\nEn realidad la mayor\u00eda de las historias que escuch\u00e9 eran de mujeres que estuvieron casadas por cincuenta a\u00f1os con un hombre al que no le gustaba salir a bailar y que tampoco las dejaba salir solas. Casi todas son viudas o divorciadas. Ahora pueden hacer lo que quieren. No tienen mayores obligaciones, sus hijos est\u00e1n grandes. Es curioso eso de experimentar una libertad tard\u00eda, cuando ya no le debes nada a nadie. Estas mujeres est\u00e1n llenas de actividades, forman grupos, clubes que organizan fiestas y viajes. Se van de crucero por Europa, hacen de todo. <\/span>\n\nLas cosas est\u00e1n cambiando tanto... Lo que me interesa, justamente, es documentar la experiencia de estas mujeres que nacieron en la d\u00e9cada de los 30, de los 40, de los 50, y que es la generaci\u00f3n que pas\u00f3 por ese cambio. Hoy, gracias al feminismo, hay mucha m\u00e1s conciencia de que no tenemos que aceptar todo lo que la sociedad nos impone. Porque eso era lo que ve\u00eda en mis abuelas. Este proyecto me ha permitido cambiar de mentalidad. Mi madre y sus amigas me han hecho cambiar de mentalidad. Ella es much\u00edsimo m\u00e1s activa que yo: hace ballet, va al gimnasio, tiene clases de franc\u00e9s, viaja todo el tiempo.<\/span>\n\nNo es que yo ande encerrada todo el tiempo, tampoco. Me siento s\u00faper joven, tengo 36. Cuando tenga el doble, no tengo idea de c\u00f3mo ser\u00e1 la sociedad, pero creo que ser\u00e1 bien diferente, porque mi generaci\u00f3n ya no acepta tan f\u00e1cilmente las cosas que sufrieron mis abuelas. Espero, en todo caso, seguir siendo bien activa y hacer las cosas que me gusta hacer y continuar fotografiando, viajando, y contando historias. <\/span>\n\nEl otro asunto es que no tengo hijos, y no creo que los vaya a tener. Antes no hab\u00eda esta opci\u00f3n de no tener hijos. Hab\u00eda un derrotero, un gui\u00f3n que hab\u00eda que seguir en la vida que es casarte, tener hijos y cuidar la casa y a tu marido. Ahora ya no. A ver qu\u00e9 pasar\u00e1.
