This August 20th, Ecuadorians will decide in a popular consultation whether the oil within Yasun\u00ed National Park \u2014 one of the most biodiverse areas \u2014 should remain underground or be exploited to achieve the progress promised by the Government. Embarking on a hyper-journey through the Amazonian countries, VIST has gathered the voices of indigenous leaders, activists, and citizens who, from the Ecuadorian jungle, demand the protection of this natural reserve and all its life.<\/p>\n

“When I was in my hut, people from the sky arrived. They brought many things and were dressed in green colors. They wanted to buy us with food, to enter then our sacred place Sawirau, which for them was just a simple oil well.”<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

One night in late June, Sani Montahuano broke the silence of the Contemporary Art Center in Quito with those words. In front of a packed auditorium, the S\u00e1para filmmaker and activist \u2014 25 years old, with red lines of annatto on her face, long earrings adorned with eagle and toucan feathers \u2014 recounted a story based on her grandparents’ memories: a tale woven with memories of when “the outsiders” arrived in the territory of their ancestors in the Pastaza jungle to exploit that prehistoric substance that sustains the modern life of our cities.<\/span><\/p>\n

“As time went by, they came with large machines and began destroying my home, forest, and animals. The spirits left along with that destruction. But they called it development.”<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Montahuano’s reading was the climax of the presentation of\u00a0<\/span>Estado F\u00f3sil\u00a0<\/span><\/em>(State Fossil). This book gathers the voices of artists and activists to reflect on our daily relationship with extractivism and its consequences. “<\/span>Is there anything in our lives that escapes from oil and its derivatives?<\/span><\/em>” the authors question, and that seemingly simple question \u2014 also answered by Sani’s narrative that opens the book \u2014 is, for Ecuador, more urgent than ever: in August, 50 years will have passed since the start of oil exports from the Ecuadorian Amazon, but a much more pressing issue will also be defined. On Sunday, the 20th, Ecuadorians will decide in a\u00a0<\/span>popular consultation<\/span><\/a>\u00a0whether the oil from a sector of Yasun\u00ed National Park \u2014 the country’s largest protected area \u2014 should remain underground or be exploited to achieve the significant revenues promised by the Government.<\/span><\/p>\n

Declared a “biosphere reserve” by UNESCO, Yasun\u00ed National Park is a symbol of life for Ecuador and the planet: its nearly 10 thousand square kilometers of jungle \u2014 located between the provinces of Orellana and Pastaza, in the northeastern Amazon \u2014 are the habitat of thousands of species of plants and animals, as well as the home of the Tagaeri and Taromenane, the last indigenous nations living in voluntary isolation for generations.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, Guillermo Lasso’s government’s political and business pressures to exploit the resources beneath the Yasun\u00ed soil \u2014 considered Ecuador’s largest oil reserve \u2014 are growing stronger. It is not a small danger: evidence shows that the presence of this industry in the Ecuadorian jungle has brought much more harm than true “progress.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Take, for example, a governmental statistic:\u00a0<\/span>between 2012 and May 2022, there were 1,584 oil spills in Ecuado<\/span><\/a>r, mainly due to the lack of pipeline maintenance, according to the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Ecological Transition (Maate). That’s an average of 12.6 monthly spills, about three per week.<\/span><\/p>\n

The number is alarming, of course. But more effective than any statistic would be visiting a city with over half a century of oil contamination to understand the damage caused by this industry (and what could happen with Yasun\u00ed). Lago Agrio \u2014 located in Sucumbios, a province neighboring Yasun\u00ed \u2014 is one such city.<\/span><\/p>\n

“You see it there,” Sani Montahuano tells me sometime after her reading that night in Quito. “There are areas where you can’t cultivate on that land, where children can’t play in the rivers because they’re contaminated. Who heals that land? No technology can heal that land. And for indigenous peoples, that’s killing what we are.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Looking in the Mirror of Lago Agrio<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Simply stick a pole into the mud at the edge of this river, and oil residues immediately surface. “Supposedly, Petroecuador has already cleaned this place, but as you can see, that’s not true,” Wilmer Lucitante, a young Cof\u00e1n activist, tells me from the epicenter of a new oil spill in Lago Agrio, at Kilometer 10 on the road from Quito. A massive pipeline ruptured a month and a half ago, very close to this stretch of the Aguarico River. What we see now is pure clay soil, seemingly bulldozed. Wilmer laments, “This river is already dead.”<\/span><\/p>\n

We have just begun what some media have dubbed the ‘Toxic Tour’: a disquieting journey to witness oil spills and other contaminations caused by this industry in Lago Agrio (or Nueva Loja), a city in the province of Sucumbios, the epicenter of “black gold” in Ecuador.<\/span><\/p>\n

This sweltering territory crisscrossed by pipelines \u2014 featuring around 880 pools (where Texaco dumped toxic extraction water) and around 447 flare stacks or metal chimneys burning day and night \u2014 is the ancestral home of the Cof\u00e1n people, one of the 11 indigenous nationalities of the Ecuadorian Amazon. But with the arrival of the powerful Texaco in the 1960s, the Cof\u00e1n became the first to be displaced by oil machinery. Pollution of their lands, their rivers, and the noise of drilling gradually forced them deeper into the forest.<\/span><\/p>\n

The initial Cof\u00e1n people called this land ‘Amisacho’ (a place of bamboo, a large thorny variety). Still, the American engineers rebranded it as ‘Sour Lake’ (Lago Agrio) when they drilled the first well. This new name would unintentionally define a new relationship between the inhabitants and the territory.<\/span><\/p>\n

Wilmer Lucitante, 33 years old, the sixth of eight siblings, knows that story from his community’s grandparents. “They used to live in harmony with the jungle. Hunting, fishing, health, traditional medicine, and the yagecito were there. But voluntarily, many started distancing themselves and hiding deeper in the jungle. Others went to work in the oil industry; they were deceived with a bag of salt, with liquor.”
Since then, in the Amazonian provinces of Orellana and Sucumbios, which we are currently exploring \u2014 close to Yasun\u00ed \u2014more than 7 billion barrels of crude oil have been extracted over half a century, yielding an income of over 42 trillion dollars. The paradox, however, is brutal: in the same region, over 50% of its inhabitants live in poverty, and there are hundreds of people with serious illnesses caused by water, soil, and air pollution.
As we walk along the contaminated riverbank, Lucitante \u2014 a communicator for UDAPT (Union of Affected People by Texaco-Chevron’s Operations), which represents 133 communities \u2014 acknowledges that this “remediation” is a lie. “Petroecuador will say they’ve cleaned up, but look,” he tells me, showing me the blackened soil in his hands, the oily spots on the water still flowing downstream despite useless plastic floating barriers.
“And then they say they compensate you. They give you a month’s worth of food, a sack of groceries, a water tank, and that’s it,” Wilmer says as he futilely wipes his hands. “Health authorities don’t come, it seems like they’re not interested. The people here are terrified and angry.”<\/p>\n

One affected individual I met was Elvia Salinas, 47 years old, a lifelong resident of Lago Agrio, who lives near the bridge where the Petroecuador pipeline ruptured. It was the morning of May 10th. She recalls leaving home at 5:30 a.m. and feeling a blast of air with a strong gasoline smell on her face. Then, just a stone’s throw from her house, the sight of an enormous jet of the blackest oil was as tall as a streetlight.<\/span><\/p>\n

“And like that, just looking, I was already covered in oil in five minutes,” Elvia told me when we visited her. “I had to wash my body thoroughly with detergent.”<\/span><\/p>\n

“And what did the company say?”<\/span><\/p>\n

“Nothing, up to now, nothing. I haven’t received any help. My chickens also died. I have photos.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Elvia shows me several pictures on her cellphone: there are the corpses of three, four, five, up to twenty backyard chickens, “and that’s how they wake up, dead in the coop,” and she assures me that Petroecuador only offered her a sack of balanced feed, but no solution for her lemons, oranges, aloe vera, and other plants that now appear withered or bearing black specks \u2014 oil stains \u2014 that weren’t there before.
“I felt something when the Petroecuador people came. A doctor told me not to consume or sell anything from my garden for three or four months. Then an engineer came and said to me, ‘Just eat. You have to die from something.’ Those were the words of the Petroecuador gentleman. Those are words that truly hurt me.”
Elvia Salinas demands that authorities come to examine the land she inhabits to know at least if she and her younger daughter are in danger. But so far, the case seems stuck in the Prosecutor’s Office. In just two months, the company has only cleaned up 500 meters of 36 kilometers of contamination. Wilmer had told me that there had been 1,100 spilled barrels, of which only 300 barrels had been recovered in the cleanup.
“And the rest? Where did it go?”
For now, Elvia has had no choice but to consume the lemons and oranges from her garden, carefully choosing the ones without those dangerous black spots.<\/p>\n

Toxic Columns of Fire<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

A similar fear spreads among the residents of Lago Agrio due to the presence of flare stacks, those metallic chimneys emitting oil particles that can spread up to 15 kilometers away. “And when it rains, they create soot that falls on the roofs of houses, in water tanks, the rain that we consume,” says Mariana Jim\u00e9nez, 82 years old, a native of Nueva Loja, living just meters from a burning flare stack.<\/span><\/p>\n

For Do\u00f1a Mariana, one of the plaintiffs in the Texaco\/Chevron trial, the damage to her health and that of her neighbors, especially children, distresses her. “Always with colds, rashes, stomach pain, tuberculosis, and I say: instead of burning gas and polluting, they should capture that gas and sell it at an affordable price in the communities,” demands the grandmother who pays three dollars for a gas cylinder, twice the national average cost.<\/span><\/p>\n

She can’t remember how many oil spills she’s seen in this area, “they can’t be counted,” but she does remember when one of those disasters killed 40 pigs overnight. “It turns out I went to the doctor in Quito, and when I returned, the pigs were dead. What had happened? Well, they had cleaned well 10, dumped all that salty water, and the pigs had bathed near the river, and a few days later, all the pigs died, swollen. If this happens to animals, imagine us! This land is no longer fit for humans to live.”<\/span><\/p>\n

According to data from a study conducted by UDATP, in this region contaminated by spills and the dumping of toxic waters (up to 30 times saltier than seawater), between 2019 and 2022 alone, 443 cases of cancer and 137 deaths from the disease have been registered. 73% of these cases are women “because they spend more time in the rivers, washing clothes, cooking, they are more exposed to water than men,” Donald Moncayo, a farmer and executive president of UDAPT, explained to me from the room where the 2,500 pages of the case against Chevron are kept, a case whose reparations (9.5 billion dollars) they still haven’t been able to collect due to the legal maneuvers of the oil giant.
“With all that has happened here, it’s better to leave the oil underground,” Moncayo had told me when discussing what could happen with Yasun\u00ed. “We’ve been exporting oil for 50 years, and when you go to a hospital here, in Lago Agrio, the oil capital, there aren’t even syringes. We don’t have good roads good education, where’s the money from oil? These spills end up reaching Peru, Brazil, and the Atlantic. These damages aren’t local; they’re planetary. Air and water have no borders, and without air and water, humans cannot exist.”
Perhaps that’s why, on the morning we visited, Do\u00f1a Mariana found it challenging to be optimistic about the jungle’s future if oil continued to be extracted from its depths, as is intended for Yasun\u00ed. From her vantage point of 82 years, she has seen far too much misery revolving around black gold.
“You know, even an ant helps us live, a cricket, a grasshopper. If animals help us live, we should also help them live, right? But that doesn’t happen. Few of us defend the land. That’s why I don’t want to think about the future of this Amazon. It saddens me enormously.”<\/p>\n

And If the “NO” Wins?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Although in recent months, indigenous and environmentalist collectives have been traveling through Ecuador explaining why the “YES” should win, several leaders we met during our journey through the Ecuadorian Amazon admit that the outcome of the national consultation on August 20th is still uncertain. Partly because the wording of the consultation question is confusing \u2014 “<\/span>Do you agree that the Ecuadorian Government keeps the ITT crude, known as Block 43, indefinitely underground?”<\/span><\/em>\u00a0\u2014 but also because the current government’s stance leans towards economic alarmism.<\/span><\/p>\n

“In the case of the NO winning, which is very likely, it will mean nearly 1.2 billion dollars to the fiscal coffers,” banker and Ecuadorian president Guillermo Lasso declared on national television last July. “So, we must think about how to replace that income. Either we reduce expenses, which is very difficult, or eliminate some subsidies, which would compensate for these revenues lost due to the Yasun\u00ed consultation.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Lasso’s government seems confident in the progress it promises. But the statistics from the state itself show a paradox: according to the 2022 National Employment Survey, the provinces of Morona Santiago, Orellana, Pastaza, and Napo \u2014 all Amazonian and with petroleum activity \u2014 are the poorest in the country.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tired of political speeches, and with the prior experience of other large-scale protests (such as the 2022 National Strike), the indigenous leaders and activists we met who are in favor of the “YES” are clear about what will happen if the majority of Ecuadorians decide to exploit the oil from the underground.<\/span><\/p>\n

“What happens if the NO wins? We will continue in the struggle until the public becomes aware that we have to take care of this planet and that it’s not just the task of activists or indigenous peoples,” Patricia Gualinga, a historic leader of the Sarayacu Kichwa people and a member of the Amazonian Women Defenders of the Rainforest collective. “The citizens of Ecuador have the enormous responsibility to decide the country’s future, one that speaks of an ethical economy. If Yasun\u00ed is exploited, we are putting at risk the voluntarily isolated peoples like the Tagaeri and Taromenane. We cannot allow an ethnocide in these times.”
The younger activists share the same purpose. One of the most visible faces of this struggle is the young activist Nemonte Nenquimo, a Waorani indigenous person, one of the nations inhabiting the Yasun\u00ed region, and who has experienced the violence of the oil industry. She says, “It is a unique opportunity to challenge the industries and limit the power they have.” Nemonte recounts<\/a> that their people achieved a victory in Pastaza a few years ago, defending over 200,000 hectares of territory from the oil industry. “Now we want to win another victory: protecting Yasun\u00ed.”
The last time we saw her before continuing our journey through the Amazon, S\u00e1para activist Sani Montahuano warned us: “If the NO wins, there will be a great struggle, a massive mobilization to the capital.” For her, who participated in the protests of 2022 alongside other young indigenous women, cinema and photography created from “her territory” are and will remain fundamental tools to keep moving forward in that fight.
“The State will send its police and military, and they will call them heroes, and we indigenous people will rise, take to the streets, face deaths, injuries. But we will still rise and be there to tell the story.”<\/p>\n

Ante un auditorio lleno, la cineasta y activista s\u00e1para \u201425 a\u00f1os, l\u00edneas rojas de achiote en el rostro, largos pendientes con plumas de \u00e1guila y tuc\u00e1n\u2014 contaba una historia basada en las memorias de sus abuelos: un relato tejido con recuerdos de cuando \u201clos blancos\u201d llegaron al territorio de sus ancestros, en la selva del Pastaza, para explotar aquella sustancia prehist\u00f3rica que sostiene la vida moderna de nuestras ciudades.<\/span>\n\n<\/span>\n\n\u201cAl paso del tiempo llegaron con grandes m\u00e1quinas y empezaron a destruir mi hogar, mi selva, mis animales. Los esp\u00edritus se iban junto con esa destrucci\u00f3n. Pero ellos lo llamaban desarrollo\u201d.<\/span><\/i>\n\nLa lectura de Montahuano era el cl\u00edmax de la presentaci\u00f3n de <\/span>Estado F\u00f3sil<\/span><\/i>, libro que re\u00fane voces de artistas y activistas para pensar nuestra relaci\u00f3n cotidiana con el extractivismo y sus consecuencias. \u201c\u00bf<\/span>Hay algo en nuestras vidas que se escape del petr\u00f3leo y sus derivados?<\/span><\/i>\u201d, se cuestionan los autores, y esa pregunta aparentemente sencilla <\/span>\u2014<\/span>respondida tambi\u00e9n por el relato de Sani, que abre el libro<\/span>\u2014<\/span> es, para el Ecuador, m\u00e1s urgente que nunca: en agosto, se cumplen 50 a\u00f1os del inicio de la exportaci\u00f3n de petr\u00f3leo desde la Amazon\u00eda ecuatoriana, pero tambi\u00e9n se definir\u00e1 un asunto mucho m\u00e1s urgente. No es un peligro menor: la evidencia muestra que la presencia de dicha industria en la selva ecuatoriana ha tra\u00eddo mucho m\u00e1s da\u00f1o que \u201cprogreso\u201d verdadero. <\/span>\n\nTomemos, a manera de ejemplo, un dato estatal:<\/span> entre 2012 y mayo de 2022 hubo 1.584 derrames<\/span><\/a> en Ecuador, principalmente debido a la falta de mantenimiento de los oleoductos, de acuerdo con el Ministerio de Ambiente, Agua y Transici\u00f3n Ecol\u00f3gica (Maate). Es decir: hubo 12.6 derrames por mes, unos tres derrames cada semana. <\/span>\n\nLa cifra es alarmante, por supuesto. Pero m\u00e1s eficaz que cualquier estad\u00edstica ser\u00eda visitar una ciudad con m\u00e1s de medio siglo de contaminaci\u00f3n petrolera para entender el da\u00f1o de esta industria (y de lo que podr\u00eda pasar con el Yasun\u00ed). Lago Agrio \u2014ubicada en Sucumbios, provincia vecina del Yasun\u00ed\u2014 es una de ellas. <\/span>\n\n\u201cLo ves ah\u00ed\u201d, me dir\u00e1 Sani Montahuano, tiempo despu\u00e9s de su lectura, aquella noche en Quito. \u201cHay zonas donde no puedes cultivar en esa tierra, los ni\u00f1os no pueden ir a jugar en los r\u00edos porque est\u00e1n contaminados. \u00bfQui\u00e9n cura esa tierra? No hay tecnolog\u00eda que sane esa tierra. Y eso, para los pueblos ind\u00edgenas, es matar lo que somos\u201d.<\/span>\n\n \n\nMirarse en el espejo de Lago Agrio<\/b>\n\nBasta introducir un palo en el barro, junto a la orilla de este r\u00edo, para que broten de inmediato residuos de petr\u00f3leo. \u201cSe supone que Petroecuador ya ha limpiado este lugar, pero ya ven, no es cierto\u201d, me dice Wilmer Lucitante, joven activista cof\u00e1n, desde el punto cero de un nuevo derrame en Lago Agrio, v\u00eda Quito, Kil\u00f3metro 10. Una enorme tuber\u00eda se rompi\u00f3 hace mes y medio, muy cerca de este tramo del r\u00edo Ag\u00fcarico. Lo que vemos ahora es pura tierra arcillosa, que parece haber sido arrasada por una excavadora. Wilmer lo lamenta: \u201cEste r\u00edo ya es un r\u00edo muerto\u201d.<\/span>\n\nAcabamos de iniciar lo que algunos medios han bautizado como \u2018Toxic Tour\u2019: un recorrido inquietante para ver los derrames de petr\u00f3leo y otros contaminaciones causadas por dicha industria en Lago Agrio (o Nueva Loja), ciudad de la provincia de Sucumbios, el epicentro del \u2018oro negro\u2019 en Ecuador.<\/span>\n\nEste territorio caluroso atravesado por oleoductos \u2014que tiene unas 880 piscinas (donde Texaco vert\u00eda las aguas t\u00f3xicas de la extracci\u00f3n) y unos 447 mecheros o chimeneas met\u00e1licas que arden de d\u00eda y de noche\u2014 es el hogar ancestral de los cofanes, una de las 11 nacionalidades ind\u00edgenas de la Amazon\u00eda ecuatoriana. Pero con la llegada de la poderosa Texaco, en los a\u00f1os sesenta, los cofanes se convirtieron en los primeros desplazados por la maquinaria del petr\u00f3leo. La contaminaci\u00f3n de sus tierras, de sus r\u00edos, y el ruido de las perforaciones los fueron replegando cada vez m\u00e1s hac\u00eda lo profundo del monte.<\/span>\n\nLos primeros cofanes llamaban a esta tierra \u2018Amisacho\u2019 (lugar de guaduas, una variedad de bamb\u00fa enorme y espinoso), pero los ingenieros gringos la rebautizaron como \u2018Sour Lake\u2019 (Lago Agrio) cuando explotaron el primer pozo. Ese nombre nuevo definir\u00eda, tal vez sin querer, una nueva relaci\u00f3n de los habitantes con el territorio.<\/span>\n\n \n\n[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row su comunidad. \u201cAntes viv\u00edan en armon\u00eda con la selva. Hab\u00eda caza y pesca, la salud, medicina tradicional, el yagecito. Pero de manera voluntaria varios se fueron alejando y esconderse mas en la profundidad de la selva. Otros, se fueron a trabajar al petr\u00f3leo, los enga\u00f1aban por una funda de sal, por aguardiente\u201d.<\/span>\n\nDesde entonces, en las provincias amaz\u00f3nicas de Orellana y Sucumbios, que ahora mismo recorremos \u2014cercanas al Yasun\u00ed\u2014, desde hace m\u00e1s de medio siglo se han extra\u00eddo unos 7 mil millones de barriles de crudo, dejando un ingreso mayor a 42 billones de d\u00f3lares. La paradoja, sin embargo, es brutal: en la misma regi\u00f3n, m\u00e1s del 50% de sus habitantes vive en pobreza, adem\u00e1s de tener cientos de personas con graves enfermedades, causadas por la contaminaci\u00f3n del agua, la tierra y el aire. <\/span>\n\nMientras caminamos la orilla del r\u00edo contaminado, Lucitante \u2014comunicador de la UDAPT (Uni\u00f3n de Afectados\/as por las operaciones de Texaco-Chevron) que re\u00fane a 133 comunidades\u2014 reconoce que esta \u201cremediaci\u00f3n\u201d es mentira. \u201cPetroecuador dir\u00e1 que ya limpiaron, pero mira\u201d, me dice y nos muestra la tierra ennegrecida en sus manos, las manchas oleosas sobre el agua que siguen r\u00edo abajo, pese a unas in\u00fatiles barreras flotantes de pl\u00e1stico.<\/span>\n\n\u201cY luego dicen que te compensan, te dan una raci\u00f3n de alimentos por un mes, un saco de comida, un tanque de agua y ya\u201d, dice Wilmer, mientras se limpia in\u00fatilmente las manos. \u201cLas autoridades de salud no llegan, parece que no les interesa. Fue la ma\u00f1ana del pasado 10 de mayo. Recuerda haber salido de casa a las 5:30 am y sentir en la cara un golpe del aire con un fuerte olor a gasolina. Luego, a un tiro de piedra de su casa, la imagen de un enorme chorro negr\u00edsimo, tan alto como un poste de luz.<\/span>\n\n\u201cY as\u00ed, mirando nom\u00e1s, en cinco minutos ya estaba ba\u00f1ada con el petr\u00f3leo\u201d, me cont\u00f3 Elvia, cuando la visitamos. \u201cTuve que lavarme bastante el cuerpo con detergente\u201d.<\/span>\n\n\u201c\u00bfY que le ha dicho la empresa?\u201d.<\/span>\n\n\u201cNada, hasta ahora nada. No he recibido ayuda. Pues hab\u00edan lavado el pozo 10 y hab\u00edan botado todita esa agua salada, y los chanchos se hab\u00edan ba\u00f1ado cerca al r\u00edo, y a los pocos di\u00edtas se murieron toditos los chanchos, hinchados. Si eso les pasa a los animales, \u00a1imagine a nosotros! Esta tierra ya no es para que vivan humanos\u201d.<\/span>\n

No tenemos buenas carreteras, buena educaci\u00f3n, \u00bfdonde esta la plata del petr\u00f3leo? Estos derrames terminan entrando al Per\u00fa, a Brasil, al Atl\u00e1ntico. Estos da\u00f1os no son locales, son planetarios. El aire no tiene fronteras, el agua no tiene fronteras, y sin aire y sin agua, el ser humano no puede existir\u201d.<\/span>\n\nTal vez por eso, la ma\u00f1ana en la que la visitamos, a do\u00f1a Mariana le costaba ser optimista sobre el futuro de la selva si se continuaba sacando petr\u00f3leo de sus entra\u00f1as, como se quiere hacer en el Yasun\u00ed. Desde la altura de sus 82 a\u00f1os, ha visto demasiadas miserias girando alrededor del oro negro.<\/span>\n\n\u201cUsted sabe, hasta una hormiga nos ayuda a vivir, un grillo, un saltamontes. Si los animales nos ayudan a vivir, nosotros tambi\u00e9n debemos ayudarles a vivir a ellos, \u00bfno? Pero eso no pasa, pocos defendemos la tierra. Por eso no quisiera pensar en el futuro de esta Amazon\u00eda. Pero las estad\u00edsticas del propio Estado muestran una paradoja: seg\u00fan la <\/span>Encuesta Nacional de Empleo de 2022, las provincias de Morona Santiago, Orellana, Pastaza y Napo <\/span>\u2014<\/span>todas amaz\u00f3nicas y con actividad petrolera<\/span>\u2014<\/span> son las m\u00e1s pobres del pa\u00eds.<\/span>\n\nCansados de discursos pol\u00edticos, y con la experiencia previa de otras protestas multitudinarias (como las del Paro Nacional de 2022), los l\u00edderes y activistas ind\u00edgenas que conocimos, y que est\u00e1n por el S\u00cd, son claros en advertir lo que suceder\u00e1 si la mayor\u00eda de ecuatorianos decide explotar el petr\u00f3leo del subsuelo.<\/span>\n

Uno de los rostros m\u00e1s visibles de esa lucha es la joven activista Nemonte Nenquimo, ind\u00edgena waroni, una de las naciones que habitan la regi\u00f3n del Yasun\u00ed, y que ha sufrido la violencia de las industrias petroleras: esta es una oportunidad \u00fanica, dice, \u201cpara desafiar a las industrias y limitar el poder que ellas tienen\u201d<\/span>. Hace unos pocos a\u00f1os,<\/span> ha contando Nemonte<\/span><\/a>, su pueblo alcanz\u00f3 una victoria en Pastaza y lograron defender m\u00e1s de 200 mil hect\u00e1reas de territorio de la industria petrolera<\/span>. <\/span> <\/span>\u201c<\/span>Ahora queremos ganar otra victoria: la de proteger al Yasun\u00ed\u201d.<\/span>\n\nLa \u00faltima vez que la vimos, antes de seguir nuestro viaje por el Amazonas, la activista s\u00e1para Sani Montahuano nos lo hab\u00eda advertido tambi\u00e9n: \u201cSi gana el NO, habr\u00e1 una lucha muy grande, una gran movilizaci\u00f3n hacia la capital\u201d.
