Peruvian filmmaker Luis Chumbe has premiered his documentary “Amazonian Sound,” in which he examines the musical career of Los Wembler from Iquitos, where he was born. This legendary band, founded in 1968, is partly responsible for initiating the Amazonian cumbia revolution. It remains active half a century later despite the difficulties it has overcome, including the deaths of three of its original five members during the pandemic.<\/p>\n

Luis Chumbe’s new documentary, focused on the legendary band Los Wembler’s from Iquitos, includes sequences in which we see the group performing on barges in front of a crowd distributed in “pequepeques” and other smaller boats in the middle of the Amazon River. The feeling left by this spectacle, conveyed by many scenes in “Amazonian Sound,” is that some things can only happen in Iquitos.
It was there that Amazonian cumbia was born, that hybrid music that emerged when the electric guitar was introduced into tropical music, influenced by English rock. But the city is another unique blend, with its rhythm of moto taxis, rain, and mosquitoes, a constant celebration, “a daily sweat,” as Luis puts it. This peculiar mix of sensations has rarely been captured by Amazonian cinema, but it’s something that this film prides itself on finally portraying.
At the heart of the feature film is a portrait of the most important musical family in Iquitos: the S\u00e1nchez Casanova family. Five brothers – Isa\u00edas, Jair, Alberto, Jairo, and Misael – formed Los Wembler’s in 1968, the same year that Los Destellos and Juaneco y su Combo appeared, and together with these bands, they laid the foundations of Amazonian cumbia. Among their most famous songs are “La Danza del petrolero,” “Un silbido amoroso,” “Sonido amaz\u00f3nico,” and “Amenaza verde.”
“They have always been geniuses to me,” says Luis. “My interest in their music comes from my grandmother, who was a big fan of this group. She has always been inferior but managed to see them. I come from a very festive family, to be honest.” “Amazonian Sound” premiered on August 15th at the Lima Film Festival, following a four-year production period marked by challenges related to the COVID-19 pandemic. The film will be screened in commercial theaters in Iquitos starting on January 5 next year, coinciding with the city’s anniversary date.<\/p>\n

How did this project begin?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

It happened by coincidence that a friend of mine made a short film that used music from Los Wembler’s in a scene, and since she lives in Spain, she asked me if I could contact them to obtain the music rights. Through some friends, I reached Mr. Jair, the voice of Los Wembler’s, and he kindly agreed to grant us the music rights without charging us.<\/span><\/p>\n

After that, we started talking. I had already been exposed to their music as they performed at an urban art festival we used to organize with some colleagues in Iquitos. Additionally, I am a documentary filmmaker, so I always watch for compelling stories. I saw something I liked in Jair. I admire his music and his warmth. Conversing with him is very pleasant. He is passionate about what he does about who he is.<\/span><\/p>\n

One thing that touched me was when he said, “This year marks our 50th anniversary as a group, and no one is going to celebrate it.” They are very proud of what they’ve accomplished, but, indeed, there isn’t much love for them in Iquitos. The gentlemen needed to do something. They had composed twelve new songs, of which they had already recorded several, and they wanted to shoot some music videos to connect with the youth.<\/span><\/p>\n

They had just returned from a European tour at that time, right?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

That’s correct. It all began in 2012 when they went to Italy with Marca Per\u00fa. It was a fresh start for them after being dormant for so long. Suddenly, they were experiencing success again and performing to large crowds in Europe. So, it was nice to find them at a time when they felt recognized. Their music is not as widely heard in Peru anymore, but it was very popular in the 70s and 80s. It was neighborhood music: Los Wembler’s came from very humble conditions. It’s a type of music that speaks of that time, of people who moved the masses.<\/span><\/p>\n

When I met them, they were very happy to have had that experience in Europe, but at the same time, they lamented the lack of recognition in Iquitos. I found it interesting because I began to notice the conflicts within Jair, who is a unique individual, a character from my city. Without much thought, I decided to lend a hand with the music videos. And it was like a whirlwind. I thought things couldn’t end there; I had to tell this story. I talked to my partner and spoke with my production team on the same day. Truly, that afternoon, I already had a movie in my mind. And when something like that happens, I dive in. I started convincing people, and within a week, I assembled the entire team I’d been working with for four years on this project.<\/span><\/p>\n

In other words, two weeks after the first conversation with Mr. Jair, we were shooting the music videos, and by the third week, we were already filming the movie. The start of filming also coincided with the carnival season, a time when they were very active. We shot intensely for five days. Although my original idea was to make a short film, when filming ended, I felt that this had enough substance to become a feature-length film. We applied for funding from the DAFO fund of the Ministry of Culture, and we won. But the following year, the pandemic began. That changed everything. Because even though we had the funds, there were many things we needed help to do. We couldn’t even buy the equipment. We attempted to film twice; the team came to Iquitos, but we evacuated them. Some team members fell ill at a time when there were no vaccines.<\/span><\/p>\n

It was truly challenging to make this film, especially because Iquitos was one of the hardest-hit areas in the country due to the pandemic. And Los Wembler’s were caught up in that whirlwind. Before that, the city was already going through a dengue hospital crisis, and the entire healthcare system was overwhelmed. The pandemic made it much worse. The second wave took Alberto, the guitarist of Los Wembler’s, and two other S\u00e1nchez brothers, who, although no longer active musically, were founding members of the band.<\/span><\/p>\n

How did you complete the film in such a complex and painful context?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

I started filming with the joy of having five brothers making music for fifty years. And suddenly, there were only two. In reality, I hadn’t recorded much. It was a critical moment for the project, but also for us personally because documentary filmmaking connects with life. The people who passed away were my friends, with whom I had shared a lot. It was a moment of great pain, a loss for everyone. However, life continued. Los Wembler’s continued and still give their all. The film reflects what happened to us in these four years.<\/span><\/p>\n

As I mentioned, I had a different idea for the film at the beginning. They had many plans; they were going to return to Europe, and they had projected six months of touring. They had achieved something significant in their lives. But the pandemic put an end to all of that. However, they never stopped working. They are musicians, their children are musicians, and their grandchildren are musicians. The peculiarity of Los Wembler’s, which sets them apart from other cumbia groups like Los Destellos or Los Mirlos, is that they are a family clan. The strength of the film also comes from this because it focuses on that legacy. The band is led by two patriarchs who manage their families according to Iquitos’ customs. In essence, the patriarchs contribute significantly to the sense of community experienced in the jungle. The S\u00e1nchez brothers are great for that; they are authentic Loretans, genuine Charapa musicians. And their children continue that legacy.<\/span><\/p>\n

But the main difficulty was that Alberto S\u00e1nchez, the lead guitarist of Los Wembler’s, was no longer with us. He passed away during filming. And Alberto was truly the genius of this group. So, replacing him seemed impossible. Eventually, Jair’s eldest son took up the mantle, but it’s still a tremendous challenge for him. The truth is that all the footage I captured with Alberto during his lifetime took on a special significance for the project because he was, in fact, the direct author of the Amazonian sound that was fading away. As a result, the film began to take on a different meaning. I am very intuitive; when I work on a project, I see in which direction life is moving, and based on that, I piece things together, always with respect for the situation because these are real people who are opening up about their intimate lives, their problems, and their dreams.<\/span><\/p>\n

Four years have passed. We resumed filming when we could. Many things happened to get to this point where Los Wembler’s managed to prevail. This film embodies everything that occurred, how there was a difficult period when they faded away, but then there was a rebirth. In that sense, it’s a very honest film. And they are very likable characters, which is part of the movie’s appeal. Many older people are in “Amazonian Sound,” both the musicians and their fans. The presence of their children becomes stronger towards the end as if to pass the torch to what they are now.<\/span><\/p>\n

So, they are happy with the film, and I am too. I think it contributes to how we tell stories and make films from the Amazon, which will remain for Los Wembler’s and the city because it’s also a tribute to Iquitos and our way of life. The photographic approach stems from our local customs and who we are there.<\/span><\/p>\n

Could we talk a bit more about that approach?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

As I mentioned, we had several setbacks during filming, including finding moments to shoot and what equipment to use since we couldn’t afford to buy much material during the pandemic. So, we started filming with whatever was at hand, gathering material from various sources, and then there were intense filming moments with the entire production team.<\/span><\/p>\n

The idea was not to make a polished film. We wanted a lot of movement for the film to feel alive, to convey the city’s rhythm, the pace of the moto-taxis, the rhythm of madness, and the rhythm of music. That’s how they are; they are super energetic uncles who are always busy with many things. That’s how the photographic approach was born.<\/span><\/p>\n

There are many shots of the river; we filmed from canoes. We also used drones because it’s a city that coexists with rivers and the jungle, and that has to be seen from above. I wanted to reflect a lot of that strong identity in the characters, the city, and, I dare say, in myself as well. There is a very Amazonian language in this film, through how the protagonists speak, with their double meanings, and how it was filmed. It’s a funny, sad film and connects a lot with Amazonians. Let’s see how it is received in Lima.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ella siempre ha sido muy pobre pero se las arreglaba para ir a verlos. Vengo de una familia muy fiestera, la verdad\u201d. <\/span>Sonido amaz\u00f3nico<\/span><\/i> se estren\u00f3 el pasado 15 de agosto en el Festival de Cine de Lima, luego de un periodo de producci\u00f3n que dur\u00f3 cuatro a\u00f1os, y que estuvo marcado por problemas vinculados con la pandemia de covid-19. As\u00ed, a trav\u00e9s de unos amigos, llegu\u00e9 al se\u00f1or Jair, que es la voz de Los Wembler's, y \u00e9l, amablemente, accedi\u00f3 a cedernos la m\u00fasica sin cobrarnos. <\/span>\n\nDespu\u00e9s de eso empezamos a conversar. Yo ya hab\u00eda tenido un acercamiento a su m\u00fasica: ellos tocaban en un festival de arte urbano que sol\u00edamos organizar con unos compa\u00f1eros en Iquitos. Adem\u00e1s soy documentalista, as\u00ed que siempre tengo un ojo atento a qu\u00e9 historia puede ser buena. Y ve\u00eda algo que me gustaba en Jair. Admiro su m\u00fasica y su simpat\u00eda. Conversar con \u00e9l es muy agradable. Es un apasionado de lo que hace, de lo que \u00e9l mismo es. <\/span>\n\nY una cosa que me toc\u00f3 es que me dijo: \u201ceste a\u00f1o cumplimos 50 a\u00f1os como agrupaci\u00f3n y nadie nos va a celebrar\u201d. Ellos est\u00e1n muy orgullosos de lo que han hecho, pero es verdad que en Iquitos no hay ese amor por ellos. Los se\u00f1ores necesitaban hacer algo. Hab\u00edan compuesto doce temas nuevos, de los que ya ten\u00edan varios grabados, y quer\u00edan grabar unos videoclips para conectar con la juventud. <\/span>\n\n\u00bfEn ese momento ellos ven\u00edan de una gira en Europa, cierto? <\/b>\n\nAs\u00ed es. Todo empez\u00f3 en 2012, cuando fueron a Italia con la Marca Per\u00fa. Era un reinicio para ellos luego de haber estado apagados tanto tiempo. De pronto estaban teniendo \u00e9xito nuevamente y haciendo conciertos multitudinarios en Europa. Entonces fue agradable encontrarles en ese momento en que se sent\u00edan reconocidos. Su m\u00fasica ya no se escucha tanto en el Per\u00fa, pero fue muy popular en los a\u00f1os 70 y 80. Era una m\u00fasica de barrio: Los Wemblers ven\u00edan de condiciones muy pobres. Es una m\u00fasica que te habla de ese momento, es gente que mov\u00eda a esa masa. <\/span>\n\nEntonces cuando los conoc\u00ed estaban muy contentos de haber tenido esa experiencia en Europa, pero a la vez se lamentaban de que en Iquitos carec\u00edan de ese reconocimiento. Me pareci\u00f3 interesante porque empec\u00e9 a notar los conflictos en Jair, que es una persona especial, un personaje de mi ciudad. Sin pensarlo mucho, decid\u00ed darle una mano con los videoclips. Y fue como un torbellino. Pens\u00e9 que la cosa no pod\u00eda quedar ah\u00ed, que ten\u00eda que contar esta historia. Convers\u00e9 con mi socio, habl\u00e9 con mi productora, todo ese mismo d\u00eda. De verdad esa tarde yo ya ten\u00eda una pel\u00edcula en mi cabeza. Y cuando sucede algo as\u00ed, yo me lanzo. Empec\u00e9 a convencer gente: en una semana ya hab\u00eda reunido a todo el equipo con el que he estado trabajando cuatro a\u00f1os en este proyecto.<\/span>\n\nEs decir, dos semanas despu\u00e9s de la primera conversaci\u00f3n con el se\u00f1or Jair est\u00e1bamos grabando los videoclips, y a la tercera semana ya est\u00e1bamos rodando la pel\u00edcula. El inicio del rodaje coincidi\u00f3 adem\u00e1s con la \u00e9poca de carnavales, que es un momento en el que ellos est\u00e1n muy activos. Grabamos muy intensamente durante cinco d\u00edas. Aunque mi idea original era hacer un cortometraje, cuando acab\u00f3 el rodaje sent\u00ed que esto ten\u00eda suficiente consistencia como para convertirse en un largo. Postulamos a los fondos DAFO del Ministerio de Cultura y ganamos. Pero al a\u00f1o siguiente empez\u00f3 la pandemia. Eso lo cambi\u00f3 todo. Porque por m\u00e1s que ten\u00edamos los fondos, hab\u00eda muchas cosas que no pod\u00edamos hacer. No pod\u00edamos ni siquiera comprar los equipos. Intentamos rodar dos veces, el equipo vino a Iquitos pero los terminamos evacuando. Hay miembros del equipo que se enfermaron en un momento en el que no hab\u00eda vacunas. <\/span>\n\nDe verdad cost\u00f3 mucho hacer esta pel\u00edcula. Sobre todo porque Iquitos fue una de las zonas m\u00e1s golpeadas por la pandemia en el pa\u00eds. Y Los Wemblers estuvieron en ese torbellino. Antes de eso, la ciudad ya atravesaba una crisis hospitalaria, una crisis de dengue, y todo el sistema de salud estaba colapsado. Con la pandemia fue mucho peor. Y de pronto eran dos. Y en realidad no hab\u00eda grabado casi nada. Fue un momento muy cr\u00edtico para el proyecto, pero tambi\u00e9n para nosotros a nivel personal, porque el cine documental conecta con la vida misma. Esas personas que fallecieron eran amigos m\u00edos, era gente con la que compart\u00ed mucho. Fue un momento de mucho dolor, una p\u00e9rdida para todos. Sin embargo, la vida sigui\u00f3. Los Wembler\u2019s siguieron y lo siguen dando todo. Y la pel\u00edcula es un reflejo de lo que nos pas\u00f3 en estos cuatro a\u00f1os. <\/span>\n\nAl principio, como dec\u00eda, ten\u00eda una idea de pel\u00edcula que iba por otro lado. Ellos ten\u00edan muchos planes, iban a volver a Europa, ten\u00edan proyectados seis meses de gira, hab\u00edan conseguido algo bien importante en sus vidas. Y la pandemia acab\u00f3 con todo eso. Pero ellos nunca dejaron de trabajar. Son m\u00fasicos y sus hijos son m\u00fasicos y tienen nietos que son m\u00fasicos. La peculiaridad de Los Wembler\u2019s, y lo que los diferencia de otros grupos de cumbia como Los Destellos o Los Mirlos, es que es un clan familiar. Creo que la pel\u00edcula tambi\u00e9n tiene fuerza por eso, porque se centra en ese legado. La banda es liderada por dos patriarcas que manejan sus familias siguiendo las costumbres de Iquitos. Porque en el fondo son los patriarcas los que mueven mucho del sentido de comunidad que se vive en la selva. Y los hermanos S\u00e1nchez son ch\u00e9veres por eso, porque son aut\u00e9nticos loretanos, son aut\u00e9nticos m\u00fasicos charapas. Falleci\u00f3 en pleno rodaje. Y Alberto era en verdad el genio de este grupo. Por eso parec\u00eda imposible reemplazarlo. Finalmente el hijo mayor de Jair tom\u00f3 la posta, pero todav\u00eda le cuesta, es un reto enorme. Lo cierto es que todo el registro que hice con Alberto en vida ha tomado cierta importancia despu\u00e9s para el proyecto, siendo \u00e9l justamente el autor directo del sonido amaz\u00f3nico que se va. As\u00ed, la pel\u00edcula empez\u00f3 a tener otro sentido. Yo soy muy intuitivo, cuando hago un proyecto voy viendo en qu\u00e9 direcci\u00f3n va la vida y en base a eso voy armando, con respeto frente a la situaci\u00f3n porque son personas reales que se est\u00e1n abriendo su intimidad, sus problemas, sus sue\u00f1os. <\/span>\n\nHan pasado cuatro a\u00f1os. Volvimos a grabar cuando pudimos. Pasaron muchas cosas hasta llegar a este momento en el que Los Wembler\u2019s lograron prevalecer. Esta pel\u00edcula tiene todo ese aire de lo que ocurri\u00f3, de c\u00f3mo hubo un momento duro en el que ellos se apagaron, pero luego hay un renacer. Es una peli muy sincera en ese sentido. Y ellos son personajes muy agradables, es parte del atractivo de la pel\u00edcula. Hay mucha gente mayor en <\/span>Sonido amaz\u00f3nico<\/span><\/i>, tanto los m\u00fasicos como sus fans. La presencia de los hijos es m\u00e1s fuerte al final, como para dar pase a lo que son ellos ahora. <\/span>\n\nEntonces ellos est\u00e1n contentos con la pel\u00edcula y yo tambi\u00e9n. Creo que es un aporte a la manera de contar, de hacer cine desde la Amazon\u00eda, algo que va a quedar para Los Wembler\u2019s y para la ciudad, porque tambi\u00e9n es un homenaje a Iquitos y a nuestras forma de vida. La propuesta fotogr\u00e1fica justamente viene de las formas que tenemos all\u00e1, de c\u00f3mo somos.<\/span>\n\n\u00bfPodr\u00edamos hablar un poco m\u00e1s de esa propuesta?<\/b>\n\nComo te dije, tuvimos varios percances en el rodaje: entre ellos, la dificultad de encontrar momentos en los que pudi\u00e9ramos grabar, y con qu\u00e9 equipo hacerlo ya que no ten\u00edamos la posibilidad de comprar mucho material durante la pandemia. Entonces empezamos a grabar con lo que ten\u00edamos a mano, agarramos material de varios lados, y luego hubo momentos fuertes de rodaje, ya con todo el equipo de producci\u00f3n.<\/span>\n\nLa idea no era hacer una pel\u00edcula pulcra. Quer\u00edamos que haya mucho movimiento, que la pel\u00edcula sude, que se sienta el ritmo de la ciudad, el ritmo de los mototaxis, el ritmo de la locura, el ritmo de la m\u00fasica. Ellos son as\u00ed, son unos t\u00edos s\u00faper el\u00e9ctricos que siempre est\u00e1n haciendo muchas cosas. Desde ah\u00ed se gest\u00f3 la propuesta fotogr\u00e1fica.<\/span>\n\nHay muchas tomas del r\u00edo, grabamos desde canoas. Tambi\u00e9n usamos drones porque es una ciudad que convive con los r\u00edos y con la selva, y eso hay que verlo desde arriba. Quer\u00eda reflejar mucho de esa identidad que es tan fuerte en los personajes, en la ciudad, y me atrevo a decir que en m\u00ed tambi\u00e9n. Hay un lenguaje muy amaz\u00f3nico en esta pel\u00edcula, por la forma de hablar que tienen los protagonistas, con esos dobles sentidos, por la forma de grabar. Es una pel\u00edcula graciosa, es triste, conecta mucho con los amaz\u00f3nicos.
