In her “Devastaci\u00f3n” project, Brazilian photographer Paula Huven explores the complex relationship between mothers and daughters. For 15 minutes, they sit in silence, looking at each other in front of a two-way mirror through which they are photographed. Inspired by Lacanian psychoanalysis, this series of tandem portraits alters the traditional relationship between the photographer and the subjects to create a shared creation from the images obtained.<\/p>\n

For Brazilian photographer Paula Huven, the desire to photograph emerged as a family matter. Born in Belo Horizonte, she began her journey in this discipline while pursuing a degree in Communication, with her initial documentary work aimed at capturing her grandmother’s daily life. Shortly after, she moved to Rio de Janeiro and was hired as a photojournalist by Folha de S\u00e3o Paulo newspaper. However, this did not deter her from working on personal photography projects in which she developed her interest in femininity and filial bonds. In 2014, this quest led her back to her hometown to embark on a two-month project, where she invited a group of mothers and daughters for a photoshoot. Huven was interested in exploring through photography what she had discovered during a lengthy process of psychoanalysis: the Lacanian concept of “Devastaci\u00f3n,” which, according to the French thinker, is constitutive of femininity.
As with everything in Lacan, it is dubiously complex to explain. The word “Devastaci\u00f3n” refers to an issue: the technical term for a lack that concerns speech and language, originating from an unending demand for love between a girl and her mother. A demand that eventually makes it impossible for the daughter to detach from her mother. Reflecting on this concept and her own family experiences, Huven designed an experiment in which she asked mothers and daughters to sit in silence, facing each other in front of a two-way mirror for fifteen minutes while being photographed.
Looking in the mirror holds special significance in Lacanian psychoanalysis: when faced with their image, the child comprehends for the first time that their body is separate from their mother’s. The specular image is more than just a simple reflection; it is a foundational moment in the psyche, the episode that marks our origin as an individual.
“What happens when they look in the mirror and what they find is not just themselves, but the image of the other?” researcher Carolina Junqueira dos Santos writes in the curatorial text accompanying this work, published in photobook<\/a> format by Origem. “This inversion destabilizes the order in the relationship: their gazes and images combine, move away from their bodies, intertwine in each other’s body. The faces of the mother and the daughter, instances of overwhelming intimacy, also acquire the highest degree of strangeness.” In this conversation, Huven discusses the nuances of the experience and reflects on her understanding of femininity in the process.<\/p>\n

How did the idea for this work come about?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The idea emerged from my own experience as a mother. I had my first daughter while living in Rio de Janeiro, far from Belo Horizonte, where my mom lives. But when my daughter turned 3, I returned to Belo Horizonte and felt deeply moved by the evolution of the feelings that arose. I identified much more with my mother. But at the same time, as a mother, this relationship became somewhat more disturbing due to the interactions between my mother, my daughter, and me.<\/span><\/p>\n

At that time, I was also in psychoanalysis, delving deeply into the complexities of the unconscious and how our subjectivity is formed. As a woman, I arrived at Lacan’s concept of “Devastaci\u00f3n.” Alongside this, I’ve always had a strong interest in the practice of portraiture, which has been an essential part of my artistic production. I find that photography, in general, but especially portraiture, is very powerful in creating relationships and experiences.<\/span><\/p>\n

I also had a very intense personal experience with the mirror. Having the habit of looking at myself in it, I realized that silence in front of the mirror facilitates deep processes. This led me back to Lacan, who precisely speaks about how female subjectivity is formed through the daughter’s desire to separate from the mother, which conflicts with the need for identification. This process is also greatly influenced by a dimension of the unspeakable, which cannot be expressed, although it is very sensitive.<\/span><\/p>\n

So, the idea for the project started to emerge from these three elements: my experience with my mother and my daughter, my experience in analysis, and my experience with portraits. I saw this as an opportunity to create a profoundly enriching meeting between mothers and daughters and provide a unique experience, an encounter in which they could interact uniquely, away from the daily hustle. In everyday life, we are always influenced by many gestures, words, and distractions that divert our attention from real contact with others. So, the idea of remaining in silence, almost in a meditative experience, is a proposal to connect with this affectivity while keeping what is happening in silence.<\/span><\/p>\n

I imagined this for a while and did a first test with a friend who agreed to participate. She even wrote one of the texts for the book, in which she tells her own experience in the first person. It worked because it was also a mystery: what would happen? Based on this first experience, I understood something special was happening between them.<\/span><\/p>\n

For these portraits, you placed the camera behind a mirror. How did this change things from the moment when mothers and daughters were looking at themselves in the mirror and not directly at the camera?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The mirror between the camera and their gazes made them look at each other. They knew I was there but didn’t have direct contact with the camera. The primary and essential contact for the work was for one to look at the other. That creates a duality in the experience because a mirror is something in which we look at ourselves to see who we are and to recognize ourselves through it. But in this case, they were looking at themselves and each other, creating an estrangement. It’s odd to look in the mirror and find another person besides yourself. The mirror also has a psychoanalytic connotation related to how a child’s individuality is formed as they distinguish themselves from their mother, recognizing their body as distinct from their mother’s.<\/span><\/p>\n

It’s almost like a game of not recognizing themselves as a body separate from the mother, being together again. Together but apart. Confusing bodies, subjectivities, memories, histories, creativities, traumas, and bonds created situations in which everything was in turmoil.<\/span><\/p>\n

You mentioned that the idea for this project arose from concerns related to your relationship with your mother. Did this work allow you to understand that relationship better?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Indeed, the idea emerged from the difficulties in my relationship with my mother. But then I realized that these difficulties were not exclusively mine; they are widely experienced in the relationships between mothers and daughters. So, of course, I was curious to see if what I was experiencing was happening elsewhere. But more than that, the idea was to provoke a feeling of estrangement or recognition in the relationship.<\/span><\/p>\n

I need to reflect on what photography can generate beyond the image. The image is the result of something that is happening. I contemplate what this image can convey and express about what people are experiencing. It remains quite open, but in this case, there were two fundamental aspects: their experience, which relates to my own experience.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Devastaci\u00f3n” dates back to 2014. Have you since continued to develop the insights into motherhood that led you to undertake this project?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Indeed, I have. My most recent work, titled “Retrato de la artista como madre,” is also related to the concept of “Devastaci\u00f3n.” I had a second daughter in 2018, and with the pandemic and everything that was happening at that time, my dedication to motherhood became more intense. Then, I began to discover some photos on my cell phone that my three-year-old daughter, Maya, had taken of me at home. As you know, a cell phone’s camera can be unlocked without a password. She started taking photos of me while I was doing everyday tasks like cooking, doing laundry, or simply resting in bed, exhausted. Finding these photos taken by my daughter was like a return of my gaze to hers.<\/span><\/p>\n

I was struck by seeing those images and realizing how deeply I was immersed in that maternal life. “Retrato de la artista como madre” is about the photos she took of me, and I think it connects with the concept of “Devastaci\u00f3n” in terms of the power of the gaze and what it can provoke when we see how another person sees us. In both cases, the relationships between mothers and daughters are about what kind of identification, recognition, and self-encounter they can experience. Seeing an image of oneself sets many things in motion. In “Devastaci\u00f3n,” they were facing themselves, and now I was facing an image where I was no longer the author but the subject being portrayed.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nacida en Belo Horizonte, se inici\u00f3 en esta disciplina mientras cursaba una licenciatura en Comunicaci\u00f3n, con un primer trabajo documental en el que se propuso registrar la vida cotidiana de su abuela. Poco despu\u00e9s se mud\u00f3 a R\u00edo de Janeiro y fue contratada como fotorreportera por el diario Folha de S\u00e3o Paulo; lo que no le impidi\u00f3 trabajar, a la par, en proyectos de fotograf\u00eda autoral en los que desarroll\u00f3 su inter\u00e9s por la feminidad y los lazos filiales. En 2014, esa b\u00fasqueda la llev\u00f3 a volver a su ciudad natal para emprender, durante dos meses, un proyecto en el que convoc\u00f3 a un grupo de madres e hijas para retratarlas. Huven estaba interesada en explorar fotogr\u00e1ficamente lo que hab\u00eda descubierto durante un largo proceso de psicoan\u00e1lisis: el concepto lacaniano de <\/span>devastaci\u00f3n<\/span><\/i>, constitutivo, seg\u00fan el pensador franc\u00e9s, de la feminidad.  <\/span>\n\nComo todo en Lacan, es dudosamente complicado de explicar. La palabra \u201cdevastaci\u00f3n\u201d remite a un problema: es el nombre t\u00e9cnico de una carencia que toca el \u00e1mbito del habla y el lenguaje, y que se origina en una solicitud interminable de amor entre una ni\u00f1a y su madre. Un requerimiento que, a la larga, hace imposible que la hija se desprenda de su progenitora. A partir de una reflexi\u00f3n en torno a esta noci\u00f3n y a su propia experiencia familiar, Huven confeccion\u00f3 un experimento en el que les pidi\u00f3 a madres e hijas que se sienten durante quince minutos en silencio, mir\u00e1ndose la una a la otra frente a un espejo bidireccional, a trav\u00e9s del cual fueron fotografiadas. <\/span>\n\nEl acto de mirarse en el espejo guarda un sentido especial en el psicoan\u00e1lisis lacaniano: el ni\u00f1o o la ni\u00f1a, enfrentado a su propia imagen, comprende por primera vez que su cuerpo es otro, separado del de su madre. La imagen especular es m\u00e1s que un simple reflejo: es un momento fundacional en la psique, el episodio que marca nuestro origen como individuo.<\/span>\n\n\u201c\u00bfQu\u00e9 sucede cuando se miran en el espejo y lo que encuentran no es solo ellas mismas, sino la imagen de la otra?\u201d, escribe la investigadora Carolina Junqueira dos Santos en el texto curatorial que acompa\u00f1a este trabajo, publicado en formato <\/span>fotolibro<\/span><\/a> por el sello Origem. \u201cEsta inversi\u00f3n desestabiliza un orden en la relaci\u00f3n: sus miradas y sus im\u00e1genes se combinan, se alejan de sus propios cuerpos, se entrelazan en el cuerpo de la otra. Los rostros de la madre y la hija; instancias de una intimidad abrumadora, tambi\u00e9n adquieren el grado m\u00e1s alto de extra\u00f1eza\u201d. Pero cuando mi hija cumpli\u00f3 los 3 a\u00f1os, volv\u00ed a Belo Horizonte y me sent\u00ed muy conmovida por la evoluci\u00f3n de los sentimientos que surgieron en ese proceso. Me identifiqu\u00e9 mucho m\u00e1s con mi madre; pero al mismo tiempo, al ser madre, esta relaci\u00f3n se volvi\u00f3 un poco m\u00e1s perturbadora debido a las interacciones entre mi madre, mi hija y yo.<\/span>\n\nEn ese momento me encontraba adem\u00e1s en an\u00e1lisis, profundizando mucho en las complejidades del inconsciente y en c\u00f3mo se constituye nuestra subjetividad. Como mujer, llegu\u00e9 al concepto de Lacan sobre la \"devastaci\u00f3n\". Junto con esto, siempre he tenido un gran inter\u00e9s en la pr\u00e1ctica del retrato, que ha sido una parte esencial de mi producci\u00f3n art\u00edstica. Me parece que la fotograf\u00eda en general, pero especialmente el retrato, es muy poderoso para crear relaciones y experiencias. <\/span>\n\nTambi\u00e9n tuve una experiencia personal muy intensa con el espejo. Al tener el h\u00e1bito de mirarme en \u00e9l, me di cuenta de que el silencio frente al espejo habilita procesos profundos. Eso me llev\u00f3 de vuelta a Lacan, que habla precisamente de c\u00f3mo se constituye la subjetividad femenina a partir de la sensaci\u00f3n de la hija de querer separarse de la madre, algo que entra en conflicto con la necesidad de identificaci\u00f3n. Este proceso tambi\u00e9n est\u00e1 muy influenciado por una dimensi\u00f3n de lo indecible, de lo que no se puede expresar, aunque es muy sensible.<\/span>\n\nAs\u00ed que la idea del proyecto fue apareciendo a partir de estos tres elementos: mi experiencia con mi madre y mi hija, mi experiencia en el an\u00e1lisis y mi experiencia con los retratos. Pens\u00e9 en esto como una posibilidad de crear un encuentro entre madres e hijas que fuera profundamente enriquecedor y proporcionara una experiencia \u00fanica, un encuentro en el que pudieran interactuar de una manera especial, alejadas del ajetreo diario. Porque en la vida cotidiana siempre estamos influenciados por muchos gestos, palabras y distracciones que desv\u00edan nuestra atenci\u00f3n del contacto real con los dem\u00e1s. As\u00ed que la idea de permanecer en silencio, casi en una experiencia meditativa, es una propuesta para poner en contacto esta afectividad mientras se mantiene lo que est\u00e1 sucediendo en silencio.<\/span>\n\nImagin\u00e9 esto por un tiempo e hice una primera prueba con una amiga que estuvo de acuerdo. Incluso ella escribi\u00f3 uno de los textos del libro, en el que cuenta su propia experiencia en primera persona. Y vi que funcion\u00f3, porque tambi\u00e9n era una inc\u00f3gnita: \u00bfqu\u00e9 iba a pasar? Sab\u00edan que yo estaba all\u00ed, pero no ten\u00edan contacto directo con la c\u00e1mara. El contacto principal y esencial para el trabajo era que una mirara a la otra. Esto generaba una dualidad en la experiencia, porque el espejo es algo en lo que nos miramos para vernos a nosotros mismos, para reconocernos a trav\u00e9s de \u00e9l. Pero en este caso, ellas se estaban mirando a s\u00ed mismas y a la otra, lo que generaba una extra\u00f1eza: es raro mirarse en el espejo y encontrar a otra persona adem\u00e1s de t\u00ed misma. El espejo tambi\u00e9n tiene una connotaci\u00f3n psicoanal\u00edtica que tiene que ver con c\u00f3mo se constituye la individualidad del ni\u00f1o a medida que se distingue de su madre, reconociendo en la imagen especular su cuerpo como algo distinto al de su madre.<\/span>\n\nEs casi como un juego: un juego de no reconocerse a s\u00ed mismas como un cuerpo separado de la madre, estar juntas de nuevo. Juntas pero separadas. Pero luego me di cuenta de que esas dificultades no eran exclusivamente m\u00edas, sino que son experimentadas ampliamente en las relaciones entre madres e hijas. As\u00ed que, por supuesto, ten\u00eda curiosidad por saber si lo que estaba viviendo tambi\u00e9n estaba ocurriendo en otros lugares; pero m\u00e1s que eso, la idea era provocar una sensaci\u00f3n de extra\u00f1eza o de reconocimiento en la relaci\u00f3n.<\/span>\n\nPara m\u00ed es muy importante reflexionar en torno a lo que la fotograf\u00eda puede generar m\u00e1s all\u00e1 de la imagen. La imagen es el resultado de algo que est\u00e1 ocurriendo. Y me planteo la cuesti\u00f3n de qu\u00e9 puede transmitir y expresar esa imagen sobre lo que las personas est\u00e1n viviendo. Esto queda bastante abierto, pero en este caso, hab\u00eda dos aspectos primordiales: la experiencia de ellas, que se relaciona con mi propia experiencia.<\/span>\n\nDevastaci\u00f3n<\/i><\/b> data de 2014. En lo sucesivo, \u00bfhas seguido desarrollando las intuiciones sobre la maternidad que te llevaron a emprender ese proyecto?<\/b>\n\nAs\u00ed es. Mi trabajo m\u00e1s reciente, titulado <\/span>Retrato de la artista como madre<\/span><\/i>, tambi\u00e9n est\u00e1 relacionado con esta idea de \"devastaci\u00f3n\". Tuve una segunda hija en 2018, y con la pandemia y todo lo que ocurr\u00eda en esa \u00e9poca, mi dedicaci\u00f3n a la maternidad se volvi\u00f3 m\u00e1s intensa. Fue entonces cuando empec\u00e9 a encontrar en mi celular algunas fotos que mi hija, Maya, de tres a\u00f1os, hab\u00eda tomado de m\u00ed en casa. Como sabes, la c\u00e1mara del celular se puede desbloquear sin contrase\u00f1a. As\u00ed que comenz\u00f3 a tomar fotos mientras yo realizaba tareas cotidianas como cocinar, lavar ropa o simplemente descansar en la cama exhausta. Encontrar estas fotos hechas por mi hija fue como un regreso de mi propia mirada a trav\u00e9s de la suya. <\/span>\n\nRealmente me impact\u00f3 ver esas im\u00e1genes y darme cuenta de cu\u00e1nto estaba yo inmersa en esa vida materna. <\/span>Retrato de la artista como madre<\/span><\/i> trata sobre las fotos que ella tom\u00f3 de m\u00ed, y creo que conecta con la idea de la <\/span>Devastaci\u00f3n<\/span><\/i> en el sentido de la potencia de la mirada y lo que esta puede provocar cuando vemos c\u00f3mo otra persona nos ve. En ambos casos, en las relaciones entre madres e hijas, se trata de qu\u00e9 tipo de identificaci\u00f3n, reconocimiento y encuentro consigo mismas pueden experimentar. Ver una imagen de uno mismo moviliza muchas cosas.
