R\u00edo Paran\u00e1 is a pair of trans visual artists composed of Duen Sacchi and Mag de Santo. They are performers, writers, researchers, curators, and educators. In their work, they create projects and exhibitions that intersect with political imagination, social fiction, sexual dissidence, and anti-colonialism. We spoke with the duo about their most recent exhibition, “La Pisada del \u00d1and\u00fa,” in Fresco, our interview series featuring new voices in the world of visual arts. Designed at the memory site Ex ESMA, recently declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, the exhibition is on display until February at the Haroldo Conti Cultural Center in Buenos Aires.<\/p>\n

How and when was R\u00edo Paran\u00e1 born?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

In 2016, in Buenos Aires, at a political assembly of trans people that brought together artists, unionists, and students, we met. We created our first artistic research project on positivist archives a few months later. We were concerned about the reception of positivism in Argentina and the institutionalization of sexism and racism. From there, we didn’t stop. Over time, we realized that Mag came with theoretical tools from LGBTIQ activism, queer movements, and feminism, while Duen had more experience with anti-racism and anti-colonialism. We changed our name, country, residence, and gender, but we’ve been working together for seven years.<\/span><\/p>\n

Our first project was “Mi Pantera Criminal,” at the end of 2016 and throughout 2017. We received an Iberescena grant to go to the Lombroso Museum in Italy. We found incredible things, such as photos of sex workers in Mar del Plata in Turin, along with letters sent by Emilio Mitre to Lombroso, asking him to investigate if they were innate criminals or criminals due to their way of life. From this research, we wrote a play and performed it in a circus tent during an artistic residency at L’Estruch in Catalonia. However, that project wasn’t widely publicized. We would love to revisit it, but that’s how it goes with projects. Some have a long life, while others involve extensive research but have limited dissemination.
In reality, our first exhibition was in 2018, “\u00bfQu\u00e9 hacen con nuestros huesos?” in Spain. We researched a Frenchman who published a text titled “Journey to Patagonia,” where he described a series of events, including the desecration of Tehuelche graves, dismemberment of bodies, and acts of looting. During the research process, we came across an image of a skull with the name of Count Henry de Lavaux tattooed on it. This led us to the story of a Tehuelche man whose grave was desecrated and is currently unburied. He was classified as a possible “missing link for Darwin” and known as the “Patagonian giant.” His remains were exhibited in the Museum of Man in the center of Paris until 2009. The Tehuelche man’s name was Sakamata, and his family in present-day Chubut has been fighting for years to have his body returned for a dignified burial. Cristina Liempichun Sakamata is leading this fight, and last year, the French government accepted the Argentine government’s request to return the body. We made slightly illegal copies of the expedition photos of the Count and gave them to Cristina for use in the community. For the exhibition, we decided not to display these photos but to create jewelry with the name of the desecrator, a mortuary plaque detailing the violence committed by the Count, and a mural with maps that both the French and Argentine governments used to mark the areas they wanted to conquer.<\/p>\n

What were the main challenges of the exhibition “La Pisada del \u00d1and\u00fa” at the Centro Cultural Conti in Buenos Aires, MAC in Panama, and La Virreina in Barcelona?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

A common challenge was to create a visual presentation that did not exoticize transracialized communities. We focused on an ethical approach rather than the effectiveness of an image’s impact. This varies depending on the context of the presentation. In a position of power, like the streets of Barcelona, for example, we chose not to use images that focused on nudity or carnivals. In Panama, where the rights of trans people are still not granted, we are criminalized. Indigenous people working at the museum helped us better understand the context, and our approach was to collaborate with associations and individuals who could accompany and advise us. In Buenos Aires, the installation process was very long, and it coincided with election time when our lives were at stake as part of campaign proposals.<\/span><\/p>\n

How did you envision the connections between decoloniality and the trans experience, transcending gender binaries?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The idea of transcending the binary isn’t particularly appealing to us. Instead, we focus on historical constructions surrounding what we now call body, gender, sexuality, and their affective, political, and social relationships. We aim to understand how historical conditions have transformed the body we inhabit. We emphasize the impact of colonialism and the coloniality of knowledge-power on us and explore how alternative ways of relating to the body, gender, and sexuality have existed alongside hegemonic ones. We investigate how these alternative narratives have been categorized, erased, recognized, and updated. We do this through historical documents (colonial archives, repression archives), identity archives created to validate our existence (trans memory archive, LGBTQ memory archive in Salta), and by examining the work of artists who put all these reflections into perspective.<\/span><\/p>\n

What was the most striking feedback you received during your exhibitions?\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Any comments, critiques, or articles that stood out?<\/span><\/p>\n

There were several notable responses, ranging from the surprise in Spain regarding the existence of stolen documentary resources from indigenous communities and the difficulty of accessing them, something we take for granted here. Young museum workers from trans, indigenous, and Afro communities facilitated the powerful appropriation of the exhibition in Panama. There was also a bomb threat from far-right groups while we set up the exhibition at the CCHConti in Buenos Aires.<\/span><\/p>\n

How do you envision creating new spaces to decentralize perspectives, a central theme in your exhibition series?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Many artists, researchers, curators, and cultural leaders in our country are working intensively to create ways to represent the uniqueness of our perspectives and artistic practices. The transformation of spaces, infrastructure, and the possibility of change is a long and complex social process. It’s not impossible, of course. “La Pisada del \u00d1and\u00fa,” for example, proposes small things to put into discussion and dispute. Even a small gesture like the need to paint walls, can completely challenge institutional structures, from a subjective to an economic level. The white cube is entirely naturalized and affects the legitimacy of practices and perspectives regarding artists and curators. On the other hand, we believe it’s worth experimenting with the idea of supportive, friendly spaces. Affirming that art and culture are rights for all is truly radical in these times.<\/span><\/p>\n

A los pocos meses creamos un primer proyecto de investigaci\u00f3n art\u00edstica sobre archivos positivistas, est\u00e1bamos preocupados por la recepci\u00f3n del positivismo en argentina, y con ello el ingreso institucional del sexismo y el racismo, y de ah\u00ed ya no nos detuvimos. Con el tiempo nos dimos cuenta que Mag ven\u00eda con herramientas te\u00f3ricas y del activismo LGBTIQ, queer, y los feminismos y Duen con m\u00e1s trabajo sobre el antirracismo y el anti colonialismo. Nos dieron una beca Iberescena para ir al Museo de Lombroso, en Italia. Encontramos cosas incre\u00edbles, por ejemplo, fotos de putas en Mar del Plata en Tur\u00edn junto a cartas que le enviaba Emilio Mitre a Lombroso para que investigue si eran criminales innatas o criminales por su modo de vida. De esa investigaci\u00f3n escribimos una obra de teatro a cuatro manos e hicimos una performance en una carpa de circo en la residencia art\u00edstica L\u00b4Estruch en Catalunya. Pero ese proyecto no fue muy difundido. Nos encantar\u00eda retomarlo, pero eso pasa con los proyectos. Algunos tienen vida larga y otros larga investigaci\u00f3n pero poca difusi\u00f3n o distribuci\u00f3n.<\/span>\n\nEn rigor, la primera exposici\u00f3n fue en 2018 \u201c\u00bfQu\u00e9 hacen con nuestros huesos?\u201d, en Espa\u00f1a. Investigamos a un hombre franc\u00e9s que public\u00f3 un texto que se llama \u201cviaje a la Patagonia\u201d donde describe una serie de hechos como profanaci\u00f3n de tumbas tehuelches, desmembramientos de los cuerpos, actos de huaquer\u00eda. En el proceso de investigaci\u00f3n dimos con la imagen de una calavera con el nombre del Conde Henry de Lavaux tatuada. As\u00ed llegamos a la historia de un hombre tehuelche, cuya tumba profanada y actualmente insepulta, catalogado como un posible \u201ceslab\u00f3n perdido de Darwin\u201d, llamado como \u201cgigante patag\u00f3n\u201d y expuesto en el hall del  Museo del Hombre en el centro de Par\u00eds hasta el 2009. El hombre tehuelche se llamaba Sakamata, y su familia en el actual Chubut reclama  la restituci\u00f3n de su cuerpo hace a\u00f1os para darle sepultura digna a su ancestro. Cristina Liempichun Sakamata lleva adelante esta lucha, el a\u00f1o pasado el Estado franc\u00e9s acept\u00f3 el reclamo del Estado argentino para restituir el cuerpo. Velar m\u00e1s por cierta \u00e9tica de trabajo que por la eficacia de impacto que pueda tener una im\u00e1gen. Esto var\u00eda seg\u00fan el contexto en que se presenta. En el centro de poder, en las ramblas, de Barcelona, optamos por -por ejemplo- no utilizar im\u00e1genes de difusi\u00f3n centrada en desnudos o carnavales. En Panam\u00e1, los derechos a las personas trans* todav\u00eda no est\u00e1n otorgados, con lo cual, estamos ilegalizados, y las personas ind\u00edgenas que trabajan en el museo nos ayudaban a comprender mejor el contexto, de ah\u00ed que nuestra apuesta fue articular con asociaciones y con aquellas personas que nos pudieran acompa\u00f1ar y asesorar. Intentamos dar cuenta c\u00f3mo este cuerpo que somos ha sido transformado por condiciones hist\u00f3ricas, y entre ellas destacamos en c\u00f3mo la Colonia y sus supuestos, y la colonialidad del saber-poder nos ha afectado y c\u00f3mo otras formas de relacionarnos con el cuerpo, el g\u00e9nero y la sexualidad han existido y convivido con las hegem\u00f3nicas. C\u00f3mo han sido catalogadas, borradas, reconocidas, actualizadas. La amenaza de bomba por grupos de ultraderecha mientras mont\u00e1bamos la exposici\u00f3n en el CCHConti.<\/span>\n\n<\/span>\n\n\u00bfC\u00f3mo ven viable que existan nuevos espacios para descentralizar las miradas, idea central en su serie de exhibiciones?<\/strong>\n\nExisten muches artistas, investigadores, curadores, referentes en las gestiones culturales de nuestro pa\u00eds trabajando intensamente en crear formas de dar cuenta de la singularidad de las miradas y las pr\u00e1cticas art\u00edsticas de nuestro territorio. Los espacios e infraestructuras y la posibilidad de su transformaci\u00f3n son procesos sociales largos y complejos, no imposibles por supuesto, La pisada del \u00d1and\u00fa por ejemplo plantea peque\u00f1as cosas para poner en discusi\u00f3n y disputa, un gesto peque\u00f1o como la necesidad de pintar paredes pone realmente (y lo hemos comprobado tres veces) de cabeza las estructuras institucionales desde el nivel subjetivo hasta el econ\u00f3mico, el cubo blanco est\u00e1 totalmente naturalizado y afecta incluso la legitimidad de las pr\u00e1cticas y las perspectivas con que se miran a artistas y curadores.
